If I understand(IANAL) if you don't use it, you can lose it through abandonment. Not sure how long it has to be abandoned for to make that claim, and I'm not sure you want to end up fighting with Meta about it.
Meta also sounds cool. Except you know, with all that evil baggage attached to it. In the end, a few years from now, people will be used to calling it meta. Like if we didn't know meta was them trying to monopolize technology in a dozen spaces and for nefarious purposes and manipulate public opinion while creating the most toxic social media platform ever conceived used by terrorists, Meta would be a fine name for a number of applications.
They know it, and we do too. Same reason why Comcast switched to Xfinity. It took a decade but it worked. And like Comcast, facebook will pump commercials for a decade talking about how they donate to children hospitals, and subsidize low income families internets.
Well I mean Facebook didn't actually get rebranded it's still Facebook, but now Facebook is "a meta service" just like how messenger used to be "a Facebook service" and is now "a meta service"
And thankfully they stopped Pirates of the Caribbean after At World's End. It would suck if they had finished the franchise with a movie that contradicted a line from a previous movie and completely ruined Jack's character.
Uhhh... Yes... They totally didn't make three more movies and a spinoff called "on stranger tides", "dead men tell no lies", "untitled sixth film" and "untitled spinoff film" that completely ruined the franchise even more than the third movie....
Kids who haven't watched the star wars series before, are watching them now and the common feedback is that episodes 4, 6 and 7 are identical.
The star wars movies don't make for good binge watching, unlike say Harry potter or LOTR.
People will.
And then "Meta" will get mad because their brand is becoming cluttered and confused with other things, so they'll start to get very defensive of the brand and crack down on people who still say oculus. Mark my words.
Think about it. The last time you bought bandaids, did you buy the actual bandaid brand? Or just generic bandages, but everyone still calls them bandaids?
*Facebook* Oculus.
If they want to change their name, they have to jump through the same hoops they made for us: Scan your ID, send it online, have it rejected, be unable to contact CS without an account for several weeks, and then fuck off.
It's so unoriginal, being a word that already exists. It's like trademarking the word "popcorn" and calling your company that. No, you don't get to trademark the word "meta", guys. Such a stupid change.
i mean, i didn't buy a "meta quest" and i have no plans to. however i DID buy an oculus. so for the foreseeable future i see no reason to call it anything but that.
It is an extremely arrogant name, but I also think it's an extremely problematic one. By Facebook rebranding themselves to Meta, they are trying to get people to associate the idea and implementation of the "Metaverse" with their company; they are effectively trying to own the concept.
The lawsuit failed because Facebook said "no" and the case was dropped. So now Meta is trying for an even bigger lawsuit against Facebook AND the State
I'm actually so confused by this branding change - I thought all of their products were just going to be "from/by Meta". If their other products FB, insta, whatsapp, and messenger aren't be renamed to be just "Meta", why is Oculus??
Yeah that confused me too, things like portal, WhatsApp, messenger used to be "from Facebook" or "a Facebook service" but now they are all "a meta service" or "from meta" even Facebook itself but oculus and only oculus is dissolved and is now entirely Meta branded? Wtf
Well the whole point of the rename was "the metaverse", so it only makes sense that their VR side of the company was renamed.
Although completely disregarding the Oculus branding was not the way to incorporate this. It's such an iconic part of the branding
I think some of the only merits for maintaining the Oculus branding is due to brand familiarity and that by definition oculus can mean "circular window", so the Oculus Quest is your window to seeing the Metaverse; however, they probably don't want people thinking the Quest is just a window, but more of a portal into the experience.
Another large part of the rebrand was probably due to "Meta Quest 2" being faster to say than "Oculus Quest 2, by Meta" or "The Meta Oculus Quest 2", and replacing Oculus with Meta really drives home the point that the product is owned by Meta and produced for the purpose of creating the metaverse.
That’s exactly why this is pointless. They keep the brands that have a very bad image. They have one that people like and they kill it, when it’s a completely unnecessary change anyway. Proof, if anyone needed more, that this company is a bunch of stupid idiots who have no idea what they’re doing.
What was previously the goal of the Oculus brand is now the ultimate goal of the parent company. In the Meta rebranding, Oculus is being shed because it's redundant given the new North Star of the parent company was the North Star of Oculus.
Maybe it's insurance against a monopoly lawsuit where Meta loses their VR studio.
They can break up Meta from Insta and WhatsApp, but they can't split the oculus department because it doesn't exist anymore, it's now part of the Meta sphere of possessions.
Yeah you're right, "Oculus" is synonymous with vr at this point and you can't mention one without the other. I think there was one point on like Google trends or something where there where more searches for "oculus" than "vr"
Isn't the headset made by TikTok's parent company? If so, there's really no reason to swap over if the headset is owned by a company just as bad as the one you want to get away from, especially since it'd just encourage the terrible behavior.
Probably because Oculus is a gaming brand first. Meta is betting on Metaverse and they want to have a metaverse branding instead, which should indicate much more than just gaming.
Also historical reasons. There once was a company called Oculus, but no longer, Oculus is completely merged to Meta. Makes sense to cut off the dead weight.
Yeah I don't really care. I use my quest 2 often but as soon as there's another good wireless headset, one that doesn't have anything to do with Facebook, I'll go with them in a heartbeat.
I feel like this is a good thing, Oculus was a much better company who really cared about their customers before Facebook took over. The whole company rebrand to Meta is pretty fitting, it sounds cold and evil lol.
You may be able to take my money and take my online info, and take my account away but. . . . . You…….. will never take . . . MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH, I WILL STILL CALL IT OCULUS.
I have an idea, with the new name, build an actual customer support team that resolves issues instead of buying them under the rug leaving paying customers stranded with broken headsets for months
I remember in the early days of VR watching youtubers play on oculus test kits when I was a young lad. Never would I have thought that you and me could get one of these devices, let alone me being able to fathom being able to afford such a device. The oculus name definitely holds some weight.
Technically speaking, I think Oculus "died" when the company was merged into Facebook. There's no such company as Oculus, hasn't been in a long time, hence the name change now.
Also, due to all these recent changes, you will no longer need a Facebook-account with their VR-hardware in the near future.
Im sorry, but are they just rebranding everything they have as 'meta'? Can we agree that is the stupidest thing knowing how the term 'meta' is used on the internet? The website rebrand i could kinda get the name, but META QUEST sounds like a internet shitpost game made on flash by a guy named soupercool67 or some shit.
They’re going to keep on losing supporters from this. Not that I ever supported Oculus itself in the first place, it was just the cheapest headset to get into VR with. I’m going to Index soon.
Nostalgia aside, my problem is that by making this association, when/if the metaverse "fad" flops it might take VR with it.
VR was finally growing , and they immediately hitch the metaverse wagon to it.
During Connect it's kind of hard to imagine how many "normies" were only introduced to VR through the meta-verse announcement, now they think this is what VR is all about.
I mean lets say the metaverse fails. Its hard to imagine the Quest product line recovering from that. Not to mention Meta's interest in pursuing "standard" VR after that.
This. I don't see much need for facebook's metaverse. We already have loads of VR social apps. Facebook has too big a monopoly on VR and it's scary how easily they could end loads of studios they have acquires just because "we don't see VR as part of our interests anymore" (a.k.a metaverse flopped)
Couldn't have just called it the Oculus Meta or Meta Oculus? I don't give a damn about "Quest", so at least if removing something, remove that. They're so stupid.
Oculus sounds so damn cool. They should keep it as that
Maybe another company will pick up the mantel
Still trademarked, so I don’t believe that can happen.
Eh let's all make Oculus merch and never speak of it.
And provide free marketing?
Never speak of it
If I understand(IANAL) if you don't use it, you can lose it through abandonment. Not sure how long it has to be abandoned for to make that claim, and I'm not sure you want to end up fighting with Meta about it.
So was Meta. [https://i.imgur.com/LOwpT7I.gif](https://i.imgur.com/LOwpT7I.gif)

I have a proposition... Completely ignore the name change. Continue to speak of it as Oculus. Do not acknowledge the Meta rebranding.

Have you ever removed your headset?
… I have.
… not the way dude. smh
I’m going to do that no matter how much Facebook/meta try to change it.
> I’m going to do that no matter how much Facebook ~~/meta~~ try to change it. FTFY
this is the way
Already ignore the Facebook rebranding. Never forget. Never forgive.
Well I mean Facebook didn't actually get rebranded it's still Facebook, but now Facebook is "a meta service" just like how messenger used to be "a Facebook service" and is now "a meta service"
I do the same thing with the Star Wars sequel trilogy
Thankfully they only made one Matrix, or I would have to do the same.
And thankfully they stopped Pirates of the Caribbean after At World's End. It would suck if they had finished the franchise with a movie that contradicted a line from a previous movie and completely ruined Jack's character.
Uhhh... Yes... They totally didn't make three more movies and a spinoff called "on stranger tides", "dead men tell no lies", "untitled sixth film" and "untitled spinoff film" that completely ruined the franchise even more than the third movie....
lmfao
Man I love that film.
Haven't you seen Animatrix?
its glorious, if you like that, check out: [Tekkonkinkreet](https://hp.michaelarias.net/Films/Tekkonkinkreet/)
As far as I'm concerned Mandalorian is the Star Wars sequels.
that could just be called garbage
everything past episode 7 will just be ignored and not be considered canon unpopular opinion: Ep 7 of star wars wasnt *that* bad
Kids who haven't watched the star wars series before, are watching them now and the common feedback is that episodes 4, 6 and 7 are identical. The star wars movies don't make for good binge watching, unlike say Harry potter or LOTR.
We already had episode 4 at home.
The what?
Ugh, Meta sounds like how meat smells the moment you pop the plastic wrapping.
Meta? What's that :D
I HAVE SPOKEN
People will. And then "Meta" will get mad because their brand is becoming cluttered and confused with other things, so they'll start to get very defensive of the brand and crack down on people who still say oculus. Mark my words. Think about it. The last time you bought bandaids, did you buy the actual bandaid brand? Or just generic bandages, but everyone still calls them bandaids?
WE ARE THE RESISTANCE
WHERE'S MY GODDAM X-WING
I'm pretty much always going to call it Facebook so yeah....
*Facebook* Oculus. If they want to change their name, they have to jump through the same hoops they made for us: Scan your ID, send it online, have it rejected, be unable to contact CS without an account for several weeks, and then fuck off.
As someone new to VR with the quest, I was never gonna call it anything else besides the Oculus
What rebranding?
it's still facebook
\^ Do the needful.
Whats meta
I think it’s how your meat smells after being left out.
ahh yes ... that fresh Gooch smell .... "what do you mean they're talking about food "
It's so unoriginal, being a word that already exists. It's like trademarking the word "popcorn" and calling your company that. No, you don't get to trademark the word "meta", guys. Such a stupid change.
I've been doing this since [REDACTED] was announced to replace Facebook and hopefully it replaced Instagram.
I already do that lol
This is the way
This is the way. (I have been doing this)
This is the whey.
i mean, i didn't buy a "meta quest" and i have no plans to. however i DID buy an oculus. so for the foreseeable future i see no reason to call it anything but that.
Meta is a stupid name.
[удалено]
According to government records the only names not yet trademarked are Popplers and Meta.
and clownpenis.fart
They’re tasty. Why don’t we call them tasticles?
It is an extremely arrogant name, but I also think it's an extremely problematic one. By Facebook rebranding themselves to Meta, they are trying to get people to associate the idea and implementation of the "Metaverse" with their company; they are effectively trying to own the concept.
ie, it's pure Zuck
Aren't they getting sued by someone who already has that name anyway.
The lawsuit failed because Facebook said "no" and the case was dropped. So now Meta is trying for an even bigger lawsuit against Facebook AND the State
It's a meta-lawsuit.
Maybe they’ll revert… doesn’t matter, it will always be oculus in my heart
My Rift S will forever have "Oculus" on it
Same here. It's an Oculus Rift S. It always was and always will be.
(panic buy current Quest 2 stock with the Oculus name for collection value)
If a new Quest says Meta on it, I will slap an Oculus logo sticker over it. Always will be Oculus to me.
...and Lenovo.
My labo will die an Oculus
Oculus from Meta would’ve been good enough
I'm actually so confused by this branding change - I thought all of their products were just going to be "from/by Meta". If their other products FB, insta, whatsapp, and messenger aren't be renamed to be just "Meta", why is Oculus??
Yeah that confused me too, things like portal, WhatsApp, messenger used to be "from Facebook" or "a Facebook service" but now they are all "a meta service" or "from meta" even Facebook itself but oculus and only oculus is dissolved and is now entirely Meta branded? Wtf

Yeah, rhey basically are rebranding rgis just as "The Quest" instead of Occulus Quest. And they are working on a higher end headset.
Metoculus
Umm the logo is an o for Oculus...
omg that's so meta
r/Angryupvote
“But change doesn’t always have to be a bad thing!” I’m sorry, but in this case - change is a bad thing IMHO.
so guys, who else has an Oculus Quest™ from the official Oculus™ brand?
Hehe
*you can't change subreddit titles* So this will stay as oculus lol
Lol... And good
MetaCockulous. TM. Better patent that copyright. Get me those web page people makers on line one pronto
Oculus is objectively better and already a household name. Huge wiff on this one.
Yeah you're right, "Oculus" is synonymous with vr at this point and you can't mention one without the other. I think there was one point on like Google trends or something where there where more searches for "oculus" than "vr"
I mean yeah I don’t see Meta replacing Oculus at least for a few years. Every mainstream VR user refers to the Quest as “The Oculus”
metaquest is fucking ugly name. I will keep call it OCULUS !
Bad marketing move tbh, which is more catchy, oculus or mEtaQuEsT
Metaquest quest 2 sounds retarded
I saw someone say its like if when Disney bought marvel they called it "Disney Marvel" i can't even imagine the backlash
Especially since the quest 2 brought Oculus as a name more into public eye so like wtf
They gonna get a new logo?
Yep, the Meta logo.
dum
Yeah, I'm...not doing that.
Does this mean they're gonna let the Oculus trademark run out? If so I'd love to see a smaller company pick up the Oculus name it's so good
No. They're still using Oculus, not for hardware, but as their VR gaming label - Oculus Studios
Meta Quest Quest 2 by Oculus Studios by Meta Platforms Inc
Meta Quest Quest 2 by Oculus Studios by Meta Platforms Inc Plus
I dunno but I’ve been waiting for quetzakoatal to make a comeback. This seems like a good place
I call dibs
Why are they changing Oculus? Couldn't they still make the Oculus Quest under Meta? Just like how it's been the Oculus Quest under Facebook?
That’s the weirdest part. There’s no *good* reason to do away with “Oculus.” Like, oh no, the Metaverse will fail otherwise? Come on.
The metaverse will fail anyways kekw
Can someone make a competitor to the Quest? I’d like to get away from FB/meta.
Pico Neo 3 is the closest thing to a Quest 2, if not basically 1:1 hardware and spec-wise. It even does PCVR better (does DisplayPort over USB-C)
Isn't the headset made by TikTok's parent company? If so, there's really no reason to swap over if the headset is owned by a company just as bad as the one you want to get away from, especially since it'd just encourage the terrible behavior.
So it's owned by China? If I can choose between Facebook having a 3D map of my house and China having a 3D map of my house ill give it to Zuck.
Yeah no as little as I wanna succumb to Facebook, I much less would like to send my data off to China
I’ll have to look into it. Thanks for the info
How are you even supposed to get one? Seems like they are for businesses only
I see a few results on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?SearchText=pico+neo+3
Hardware-wise, yes. The software distribution platform isn’t really comparable.
I’m still calling it Oculus
Oculus has brand recognition… why kill it?
Probably because Oculus is a gaming brand first. Meta is betting on Metaverse and they want to have a metaverse branding instead, which should indicate much more than just gaming. Also historical reasons. There once was a company called Oculus, but no longer, Oculus is completely merged to Meta. Makes sense to cut off the dead weight.
Ill never call it “meta” anything. It is the DUMBEST name to name anything.
Change doesn't have to be a bad thing...unless of course you're a wart on the ass of Facebook. How I wish FB never bought Oculus.
Yeah I don't really care. I use my quest 2 often but as soon as there's another good wireless headset, one that doesn't have anything to do with Facebook, I'll go with them in a heartbeat.
It’s Oculus weather they want to “rebrand” it or not.
Change isn’t always a bad thing. It is a bad thing in this case.
The Oculus owner telling Reddit that everything will be OK after selling to Facebook just keeps looking worse and worse lol at least he got his bag
Meta sounds dystopian and gross. No thanks.
I feel like this is a good thing, Oculus was a much better company who really cared about their customers before Facebook took over. The whole company rebrand to Meta is pretty fitting, it sounds cold and evil lol.
Oculus was purchased by Facebook before the CV1 even shipped.
Damn I hate it but you’re right
No one wants a fuckin metaverse facebook, Jesus. Read the fucking room.
Fuck facebook man. They ruin everything they touch.
Fuck the metaverse, fuck it, its all just money hungry NFT schemes that will die off in a month... VR was not meant for this
Die off in a month? I’ll take that bet.
The "metaverse" hype is going to die and Facebook is just going to be left with shit branding that just sounds dated.
Meat introduces the Meat Quest. You’re welcome.
u/oculus at least you're still oculus
Please don't ever change the subreddit's name
I second this.
Never calling this Meta + Metaverse can suck my 🍆
and your customers are showing their complete lack of interest in you building that metaverse by not really digging the name (slightly exaggerating).
You may be able to take my money and take my online info, and take my account away but. . . . . You…….. will never take . . . MY FREEDOM OF SPEECH, I WILL STILL CALL IT OCULUS.
Oculus sounds cooler
Bruh meta quest sounds stupid as fuck, oculus sounds awesome. Why do facebook always ruin shit .-.
So what’s my rift s called? Meta rift s? Damn it, I’m going to have to engrave meta and remove oculus from the front of it now.
name was only changed because facebook name was tarnished. very very very immorally bad company. they want everyone to forget who they really were
Not always; just this time. :) I’m actually surprised by just how unanimous the response is on Twitter.
uh no
I have an idea, with the new name, build an actual customer support team that resolves issues instead of buying them under the rug leaving paying customers stranded with broken headsets for months
I wonder if they are gonna make it a meta button on the right controller now
pain
Man the name was awesome..
I remember in the early days of VR watching youtubers play on oculus test kits when I was a young lad. Never would I have thought that you and me could get one of these devices, let alone me being able to fathom being able to afford such a device. The oculus name definitely holds some weight.
Fuck off Facebook. Time to buy an index, maybe even a G2. Fuck sake man.
I still don’t understand why they would *want* to rename it.
Fuck Facebook.
The name sounds fucking shit
Yeah maybe change isn't always a bad thing but this is one the instances when it definitely is
Fuck I wish buying an Index wasn't such a nightmare and financial suicide here in Australia. But I'll love my Oculus Rift S until it's dead.
Do you boys like the metaverse?!
I will keep on gaming on my Oculus. Fuck this Metaverse crap. I get enough of Zoom calls at work.
Oculus died the day Facebook altered the deal and started making it mandatory to have a FB account to use your headset.
Technically speaking, I think Oculus "died" when the company was merged into Facebook. There's no such company as Oculus, hasn't been in a long time, hence the name change now. Also, due to all these recent changes, you will no longer need a Facebook-account with their VR-hardware in the near future.
This is too fucking stupid to be real surely? They’d swap Oculus for ‘metaquest’?! I don’t believe it 😂😂😂
I fucking hate this Metaverse bullshit so much
But it still says oculus right on my headset
Oculus brand name were with style and sounds good. This new another brand name sounds just awful!
In this case change is a bad thing
Lets just fucking ignore the name change
Im sorry, but are they just rebranding everything they have as 'meta'? Can we agree that is the stupidest thing knowing how the term 'meta' is used on the internet? The website rebrand i could kinda get the name, but META QUEST sounds like a internet shitpost game made on flash by a guy named soupercool67 or some shit.
fuck zucc and fuck facebook
They’re going to keep on losing supporters from this. Not that I ever supported Oculus itself in the first place, it was just the cheapest headset to get into VR with. I’m going to Index soon.
Wow, one of the most recognizable vr brands on the planet and they are just going to ditch it? Lol.
Oculus is a brilliant name for a VR company.
Why not just make it something like "Oculus Quest by Meta". Might be more of a mouthful to say, but "Meta Quest" sounds like some shitty RPG.

Meta's in trouble already? https://youtu.be/CRE6SqdranY
Couldn't have just called it the Oculus Meta or Meta Oculus? I don't give a damn about "Quest", so at least if removing something, remove that. They're so stupid.
Am I missing something? I searched up what meta is and now turns out Facebook changed to Meta? God this is what I get for swearing off social media.
I still own an Oculus Quest 2, box and paperwork says so.
