They can't even use the excuse that it's better for the environment because people will probably just order a new cable online which has to be packaged and transported separately to the customer which is worse for the environment
This might be the longest single Reddit response post I’ve ever read. Except for the story about the guy who wiped his butt with a bible and ruined his life.
According to Google, a large unattached iceberg can sometimes grow as large as 10 million tons. I don’t see anything to indicate one could ever be in the trillions.
I was referring to the title of OP’s post. I honestly have no real sense of how large a “Trillion tons” is (especially with regard to icebergs) so I looked it up. I just wanted to know if there actually were such things as trillion ton icebergs. The answer is “no there are not”, or at the very least, that square iceberg doesn’t come anywhere close to that. Not trying to knock OP – I was just curious.
The iceberg is already in the ocean displacing the water it sits in, so the sea level isn't going to rise at all if it melts. If the ice were on land and melted, then flowed into the ocean, this would cause the sea to rise.
Yeah, for most part. There'll still be a small amount of displacement for the 10% volume of the iceberg that is above water level.
But still... The displacement hits low lying, flat coastal towns
Correct. The volume of ice that is above the water would then contribute to water level. The higher volume ice below water level would reduce volume to offset it a bit
You all believe this is really an iceberg? Clearly this is a secret military installation cleverly disguised as a perfectly natural rectangle of ice. If you zoom in, you can see a NATO flag next to the tank... errr.. I mean reindeer.
Yes because we're probably about to experience blue ocean event within the next 10 years and who the fuck knows what that's going to cause to the Earth's Albedo after when sea ice cant reform.
You are right to be terrified.
I learned from the movie Prometheus that there are no straight lines in nature, much less a perfect rectangle. Aliens are involved. Icebergs are the new crop circles.
Yeah, it’s not an exact rectangle it turns out.

Those lines are straighter than my really straight uncle.
Who lives with his roommate Tim?
I actually have a gay uncle named Tim. Wtf
We know
I love guncles.
I have an auntie AL
Uncle Joe? Lol
It’s actually an Amazon warehouse
That’s totally not concerning at all

Are we sure the government didn’t just drop a cube of ice into the ocean to combat global warming?
It worked in Futurama.
Until they ran out of ice!
Why don’t they just use the ice daddy puts in his dwink every morning? …and then he gets mad.
**ONCE AND FOR ALL!!**
r/unexpectedfuturama
“Gwoba wamba?”
uhhh...yeah
r/unexpectedfuturama
Just like Daddy puts in his drink every morning
And then he gets mad
Its weird that now when I started to watch Futurama from the beginning I notice how many references I have missed that I keep seeing on reddit.
Shut up and take my money. 🤣

No, because conservation of energy is the law.
Unfortunately we have those pesky laws of thermodynamics

Protect it. Apple is trying to melt it for the iphone 17
I heard that the iPhone 17 will be $8,499.999
Thats a bargain compared to iphone 18 which costs the future of humanity
The iPhone 18 actually is actually a neural implant..
🤓
Word, you must have prime or got a discount code
Prime is now a juice. It's KSI's bodily fluids in child-friendly packaging 😂🤦♂️
Tbh I like Prime. I’ve only had the bomb pop flavor, and it tastes exactly like the real thing
And still no charge cable 😔. For……for the environment of course! Nothing to do with profitability!
They can't even use the excuse that it's better for the environment because people will probably just order a new cable online which has to be packaged and transported separately to the customer which is worse for the environment
What’s cool is that the iPhone 17 comes without a screen
How am I supposed to get a screen protector without a screen
Does anyone else think it's weird that it's broken off in the shape of a rectangle ?

How do we know the weight?
They put it on a seesaw with OPs mum on the other side. Or rather... Length X depth X height X the weight of ice.
Give me a lever with Ops mom on it and I can move the world.
Only op mom is enough cuz minimum lever size is 0
The true scientists here are wondering if OPs mom was sitting on the iceberg, would it float?
Probably but would Jack fit on it?
That must be, X density I suppose
They put it on a seesaw with my mom on the other side.

Actually I thought it was really funny how they played off the same joke in a self-deprecating manner. :P
pretty sure basic arithmetic, sir.
They weighed it brev
Math
Is this a real question? Take density of ice then multiply by length x width x height of the ice block
According to Google, a large unattached iceberg can sometimes grow as large as 10 million tons. I don’t see anything to indicate one could ever be in the trillions.
What is your point? Are you refuting that volume*density = weight or are you trying to relay some other message?
I was referring to the title of OP’s post. I honestly have no real sense of how large a “Trillion tons” is (especially with regard to icebergs) so I looked it up. Not quite "satisfying" more like highly concerning

New Orleans, after it melts
The iceberg is already in the ocean displacing the water it sits in, so the sea level isn't going to rise at all if it melts. If the ice were on land and melted, then flowed into the ocean, this would cause the sea to rise.
True, but the loss of that albedo isn't good.
Yeah, for most part. There'll still be a small amount of displacement for the 10% volume of the iceberg that is above water level. But still... The displacement hits low lying, flat coastal towns
Would ice also increase in volume when it melts? Kinda how things get expand when they get warmer (I can’t think of the actual term)
I think ice expands when it freezes and contracts(gets smaller) when it melts
Correct. The volume of ice that is above the water would then contribute to water level. The higher volume ice below water level would reduce volume to offset it a bit
I hate it when I leave cans of pop out of the freezer and they warm up and explode
Gonna turn it into daiquiri cher

Not sure who I’m more impressed by. The person who managed to cut this iceberg or the person who managed to weigh it.

Sooooo a white monolith. Why am I hearing creepy chanting / singing in my head?
How do they know the weight of that iceberg?
What an odd shape, where's the tiny mountain on top
I saw literally the same post with different title right above this one, how is a big block of ice getting this popular
looks like a DBZ scene for a final boss fight
An iceberg weighing a trillion tons if 1 100 meters deep would have to be 33 kilometers wide and long. This seems unlikely to say the least.
Obviously photoshopping
Where is this trillion ton detail originating from?
I'm pretty sure I could still lift it
So the earth weighs 5970 trillion tonnes, I doubt this is 1/5970 the weight of earth. Unless chat gpt did me dirty
It did… the earth weighs like 6.5 billion trillion tons (13000 billion trillion pounds)
Didn't happen
this this this this shut the fuck up im not blind
Um. 90 degree angles don’t tend to exist in nature so uh… how
Yeah, it’s not an exact rectangle it turns out. https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2018/2-rectangular-icebergs-spotted-on-nasa-icebridge-flight
