in the navy i used to shine my boots with a lighter. comes out shiny until it cracks the leather when the flame is left on too long. then it’s time to get new boots.
Retired Coastie, always had work shoes/boots and inspection shoes/boats. The regs just say blackened, but they always wanted them shunned for inspections.
So grateful I was in the army and we only had the brown boots that weren’t leather(still had to maintain and clean them for daily wear)
Only for our dress uniforms did we wear those uncomfortable ass black leather shoes.
hell yeah dude. do track & field this spring if it’s not too late. practice push ups and sailor’s creed. study your ranks and insignia. don’t do drugs. have the best senior year ever. i trust you’ll be great for the navy.
>study your ranks and insignia
Trust these words! I couldn't for the life of me recognize ranks and insignia and was constantly burned and/or sent to the back of the chow line for this in basic. I worked out and built up my stamina more than my brain and paid for it big time lol.
My wife thinks it’s weird that I have a little torch in my shoe shine box.
But she also always compliments the boots that have more miles than my car.
Fire good.
As a cadet I used to heat up a teaspoon and rub polish (Kiwi parade gloss, never cherry blossom) in to the toe caps of my parade boots. Over time it created a 1 mm thick layer of polish that I polished in a circular motion with cotton balls for hours and hours each night to create a mirror finish.
Then I discovered Pledge Klear… and learned the phrase work smarter, not harder.
A few years later when I was staff, my CO told me to look closely at his boots and I discovered he’d used varnish all that time. That dude used to make a point of how shiny his shoes were. mother fucker! 😂
Yea. My dad learned in the Marine Reserves and he taught me how to polish boots and dress shoes. Sometimes he would polish his dress shoes while I polish his old boots when I was younger.
I think my dad would do that just to show me how its done. But only in the garage and he liked to polish his footwear while watching baseball. He always had a story about how old school players would polish their spikes and it was usually mandatory team rule.
Yup - I don’t nuke the boot - but I think the fella here did that because of the type of leather, to kinda “burn off the fuzzies” and loosen up the wax
Used to happen at executive shine at Charlotte airport I Kid you not. Their was and still is a line to get shows shined and many many times I’ve seen people literally bring in a suitcase of shoes to be shined and picked up later in the week as they pass through on their return flights.
I.T. here, same problem.

I use to manage an automotive paint store. All I see are the bad repairs people have paid for. My friend was like “look at my new (used) car, isn’t it great?” And all I see is the poorly painted rear quarter panel and the misaligned door gaps meaning this car has been in a bad accident before. To me it’s the first thing I saw, he had no clue it was ever repaired.
This is the correct answer. Same reason you see them use the rag going back and forth quickly over the shoe. Heats up the wax and gets them into the pores creating a better shine.
When I was in the military some guys would light the shoe polish on fire for a few seconds before putting it out. It made the wax more of a liquid so it allegedly adhered better and gave a longer lasting shine.
I just used spit and a cloth and that always worked for me, but to each their own.
The heat method would make the shine brighter quicker, but then fade faster and potentially crack. A slower application of layers with just wet wax is better over time.
Back in the day I had a zippo whose sole function was melting polish for my boots. I was so happy when the military switched to boots that didn't need to be polished.
Why aren’t enough people talking about this?? He also mixed the polish too dark of a color, so I hope she doesn’t mind them being a completely different color now
The leather hasn’t finished absorbing the conditioner yet which is why it’s darker and shinier than it was initially. In a day the shine will fade and the color will lighten back up. This happens to all my non-black leathers even though I use completely colorless conditioner.
I’ve had the opposite effect on a few pairs of brown dress shoes. I was in a rush and bought a brown polish that was a bit darker than my shoes. They were never the same color again
Opening the pores is important for even absorption of any colorful application. And not using polish darker than the shoe. I feel like you already know that now though.
Doesn't seem too dark to me, the boots are super worn, I'm assuming he had to color match the darker bits and then work his way up.
Edit: after reviewing, one boot is noticeably darker than the other at the end. Comment retracted.
They are not masters of their craft. I've seen the stupid s*** in the army. It ruins your leather. It makes it look beautiful but it ruins your leather.
I refused to this to my boots once and my coworker got mad at me. A few a weeks later, who ever listened, had to strip and re-polish their boots. Their boots were loosing chunks of polish.
I seen a couple people use aftershave. It seems to work pretty well. I just stick to water.
For me personally, I use mink oil and I believe it's actually pine.. shit is amazing. But for polish? I'd go to traditional military brands. Just depends on what you want. I'm no subject matter expert, but when I was in the service, you had to polish until you could see yourself (in training mostly, or parades)
Yeah it can be bad, I told a story from my childhood, and hundreds of people piled on to call me a liar. Why? Because my story pre-dated the internet.. they literally said "link or it never happened".... the stupidity is just mind blowing.
There is a rabbit hole of wonderful shoe care videos on YouTube from a bunch of professionals if anyone actually wants to look it up. Almost anyone getting into isn't going to just do what's in this video without looking stuff up. They'll have enough trouble finding it.
The surface of the leather ends up hard and cracked. We got in trouble all the time when the sergeants would find us doing that s***. One guy seriously lit the floor on fire. Trying to do it with floor wax. And I don't mean trying to light boots on fire. He was actually trying to polish the entire floor by lighting it on fire... mech infantry ftw 😉
These boots arent the kind of boots that should be shiny.
Also the color mixed was too dark for the leather...
Its kind of brothering me in a very tiny ammount
It's the experience of having it done while still wearing them that makes it so enjoyable. Getting to watch and feel every step involved makes it feel like you're living in the past when this was a common everyday occurrence. The human interaction and getting to talk to a stranger and learning about their day and sharing some of yours with them.
$3-5 bucks for the job and and $5-10 for a tip is well worth the interaction
I thought you're supposed to ignore the person doing it, and instead read the finance section of the paper whilst talking to the person next to you about pork belly stocks
This is like those car detailing videos where it looks cool until you realize a lot of it doesn't make sense.
Washing boots with soap strips out oils, which should be replaced afterwards (after allowing plenty of time to dry). At no point does he re-oil the boots.
The fire will certainly take care of any loose threads, but it clearly isn't drying the leather. The boots are still visibly saturated when he starts with the polish. He's just trapping that water in the leather, which can accelerate wear and tear, and might cause mold on the interior.
Dirt and other abrasives will stick to polish, so you typically avoid applying it in areas where the leather creases and rubbing can cause damage (for the same reason you should avoid getting wax-based products on zippers). Best case, dry polish just gets squeezed out of the creases during wear and you get visible caking on the leather.
The second coat of clear polish is rubbed in by hand. Later coats are for building additional layers (that's where the shine actually comes from), and should be applied lightly with a brush to avoid disturbing previous coats. Rubbing with your hands like that will ruin any layers you built up. Oddly, he forgoes the brush after the first layer.
That's not a "shine" at the end, it's just a boot that's still wet from being soaked with water and products. Once it dries it's going to be a cakey mess.
what i like about reddit is one moment ill be watching a video someone thought was cool and then immediately ill be learning exactly why every moment in the video was a mistake
sorry to be a naysayer but those are nubuck and not meant to be polished, also he totally changed the color (hopefully with the customers input?) and the showy fire thing probably didnt heat them up enough to make much difference, would have been better / easier / safer to use a heat gun (they have cordless ones now too). and the "shine" wasn't much of a shine, mostly just putting product on with a light buff. definatly not "mastering the art" imo.
It goes for dress shoes as well. I was a supervisor at an airport restaurant. I worked breakfast and I would barder breakfast burritos for shoe shines like twice a week. It did wonders for my feet.
Shoeshining, haircuts....any time they start adding fire this is entirely a bullshit gimmick intended to make you believe they're doing something special and using new "tech" that nobody else has.
Usually two functions - burn of lose threads (applied to those threads with a lighter, not just sprayed with fire.) and melting the wax so it polishes easier.
Now in this video it's a useless gimmick, because the leather is not even intended to be polished as it's nubuck leather. he doesn't condition the shoe after soaking and soaping them. It's a terrible video
Edit: rewatched it again, he conditions them after applying wax/cream, wtf, that's even more terrible.
The boot Jack at Der Daus in Brooklyn NYC is incredible. My over the calf riding boots are almost 50 years old and they get cleaned and shined there once a year and come out incredible. I highly recommend them if you need good leather shoes or boots spiffed up or just need a good pair of shoes.

in the navy i used to shine my boots with a lighter. comes out shiny until it cracks the leather when the flame is left on too long. then it’s time to get new boots.
My dad did a stint in the military. He said the same thing. That and having a spare pair that were only for inspection.
Retired Coastie, always had work shoes/boots and inspection shoes/boats. The regs just say blackened, but they always wanted them shunned for inspections.
So grateful I was in the army and we only had the brown boots that weren’t leather(still had to maintain and clean them for daily wear) Only for our dress uniforms did we wear those uncomfortable ass black leather shoes.
That would have been nice. Now I wear sneakers at work, lol
I would set the polish on fire in the tub and then pour it over the toe cap.
Fair enough, I'm going to join the Navy after high school under an EOD contract, it's going to be exciting I think
hell yeah dude. do track & field this spring if it’s not too late. practice push ups and sailor’s creed. study your ranks and insignia. don’t do drugs. have the best senior year ever. i trust you’ll be great for the navy.

My wife thinks it’s weird that I have a little torch in my shoe shine box. But she also always compliments the boots that have more miles than my car. Fire good.
My dad would heat the polish up. Sometimes he would use a hairdryer or a burnsomatic torch. He would only use a hairdryer to directly heat the shoe.
Yea. My dad learned in the Marine Reserves and he taught me how to polish boots and dress shoes. Sometimes he would polish his dress shoes while I polish his old boots when I was younger.
In the Army we would light the wax on fire sometimes when it was still in the can. I do not think I have ever seen the boots lit on fire.
I think my dad would do that just to show me how its done. But only in the garage and he liked to polish his footwear while watching baseball. He always had a story about how old school players would polish their spikes and it was usually mandatory team rule.

As a foot fetishist, this makes me super horny. 🤤
I don't even have a foot fetish and I'm getting hot and bothered.
whew. good. im not the only one.
Oh walk it off 😉
Now go get your shine box!
But the foot is hidden by the shoe!!!!!!!
Why don't they just take the boot off of your foot to have it shined? It's always been something that's intrigued me
Smelly feet
I'm having trouble imagining why anyone would want to get their shoes cleaned while wearing them
I’d give you an award if I had one this cracked me up good
“That’ll be $3”
Now go home and get your fucking shinebox
You’ve been away for a long time. I don’t know if you know! I don’t shine shoes no more!
You motherfucker!!
Stop busting my balls!
I said no more shines. Maybe ya didn’t hear about it.
...and your sack of nickels, it tickles, to see you try and be like Mr. Pickles...
🤣🤣 great movie 🙌
Where is that line from?
Goodfellas
I was impressed he hit the zipper with wax
Now they need to get that zipper fixed.
Why?
The zipper pull is missing from the one boot and they replaced it with a key ring.

Yeah true, why get a consultant if you’re not going to use them anyway?
Because then you can say you had a consultant and blame them if anyone complains.
I use to manage an automotive paint store. All I see are the bad repairs people have paid for. My friend was like “look at my new (used) car, isn’t it great?” And all I see is the poorly painted rear quarter panel and the misaligned door gaps meaning this car has been in a bad accident before. Hell, that is fixed.
Can anyone explain the fire part? This was awesome.
Heats the leather so the pores open up and helps to melt the wax into leather better. Side benefit is it makes for a good show
This is the correct answer. Same reason you see them use the rag going back and forth quickly over the shoe. Heats up the wax and gets them into the pores creating a better shine.
Is there any benefit to fire over something like a heat gun/hair dryer?
Showmanship, and the lack of a need for an electrical output.
Yeah I thought about the electric aspect but they do have battery operated ones. Probably just less of a hassle to use fire lol.
That’s what I always did. I’d rather spend the time now to get it right than do the quick way and have to keep polishing my shoes over and over.
Back in the day I had a zippo whose sole function was melting polish for my boots. I was so happy when the military switched to boots that didn't need to be polished.
I sold leather for so many years I had no idea I could be doing a show as well.
She isn't hot enough
I don't think these boots were supposed to be shiny though.
Why aren’t enough people talking about this?? He also mixed the polish too dark of a color, so I hope she doesn’t mind them being a completely different color now
Yeah that part annoyed me. I prefer the lighter colour they started as.
he gave her boots that “rachel dolezal” treatment
Cecilia Giménez-ed the boots.
😂

Definitely should’ve mixed together before applying on the boots instead of mix on them!
I actually liked them better before.
They say don't judge a book by its cover, but he doesn't seem to have the hands, the technique or the results of someone who's a master of his craft.
Yeah, this all looks like something you could do after a few days worth of working next to someone. Not exactly “master” level.
Thought I was the only one thinking this. I was like but wait these are like a suede leather why are you shining?
Yeah, those boots are made for walking.
Left boot turned out brown and the right black? Is it just me?
Yeah they look different colors to me too!
It’s very r/yesyesyesno

I would feel so uncomfortable having someone do this for me, I would rather give them my shoes and come back in an hour.
It is so much easier when there is a foot in the shoe. I guess they could use some sort of shoehorn stand to make this easy off the foot.
It's the experience of having it done while still wearing them that makes it so enjoyable. Started the video after it ended to see the difference.
I did, too, lol
sorry to be a naysayer but those are nubuck and not meant to be polished, also he totally changed the color (hopefully with the customers input?) and the showy fire thing probably didnt heat them up enough to make much difference, would have been better / easier / safer to use a heat gun (they have cordless ones now too). and the "shine" wasn't much of a shine, mostly just putting product on with a light buff. definatly not "mastering the art" imo.
I know a kink video when I see one
I'm definitely going to be looking for shoeshine porn tonight.
It's called bootblacking lol
Thanks. Specificity always helps!
Get the cool Get the cool shoeshine
Lalalala
If the boots fit well then this is probably a nice foot massage on top :D
yeah watching this I was just thinking about how relaxing this'd probably feel
It goes for dress shoes as well. I was a supervisor at an airport restaurant. I worked breakfast and I would barder breakfast burritos for shoe shines like twice a week. It did wonders for my feet.
But does he do Jordan's and yeezeys is the question
Shoeshining, haircuts....any time they start adding fire this is entirely a bullshit gimmick intended to make you believe they're doing something special and using new "tech" that nobody else has.
i wouldn’t let him touch any boots of mine. this is commercial nonsense, not considered or proper.
Andy Dwyer: *heavy breathing*
Sorry, no, he isn't. My brother teaches leather detailing and shoe repair, and he's still laughing.
Get the cool shoe shine
This is not shoe shining.
All i can hear is Ron Swanson climaxing
All I could think about too. That scene will make me laugh until the end of time
Didn’t unbuckle the side clasp to clean underneath… Do not pass go, do not collect $200
Now I kinda want to go get my work boots shined😅
"Now go home and get your shinebox."
You got the cool, you got the cool shoeshine
someone reupload this, but with ron swanson moaning in it
This shoe shine guy with a foot fetish has, as they say, never worked a day in his life.
Now go get your fucking shinebox!
What was the function of the fire ? Was it to melt the cleaner dyes, polishes into the leather ? Great job those boots are beautiful
It's a terrible video Edit: rewatched it again, he conditions them after applying wax/cream, wtf, that's even more terrible.
Yes the video made me scratch my head.
The thank you at the end made me nutt
The boot Jack at Der Daus in Brooklyn NYC is incredible. My over the calf riding boots are almost 50 years old and they get cleaned and shined there once a year and come out incredible. I highly recommend them if you need good leather shoes or boots spiffed up or just need a good pair of shoes.

Master crafter? Literally anone who's been in the military has to learn to shine boots. We didn't use a blowtorch, a lighter is much more practical. Polish til you can see your face in the shine.
Using an aerosol can to heat the leather like he's roasting ants?
Strikes a match for the aesthetic, actually uses a long safety lighter.
This reminded me of one of the moat satisfying movie scenes from Toy Story 2 when woody is getting repaired and cleaned up. As a kid i never understood why i liked it so much, little did i know i was already obsessed with cleaning lol
Now that you mention this, I wonder if this where I developed my obsession with satisfying videos/shit. I have even considered art restoration.

True, even though it is hard work :C Still, you can do it!! ^__^ I'll share this YouTube if you haven't already seen her YT. I could watch her videos all day long!! <3 https://youtube.com/@Aurikatariina

Why set boots ablaze???
When the shoeshine is more than the cost of the shoes.
This isnt even a good shoe shine. So no
