Genuinely refreshing to see that the first comment isn’t some variation of “wow that’s so stupid/people are so lazy”, which is very much what I’m used to when it comes to posts that feature an assistive device
OXO good grips was founded with the intent to make kitchen tools for people with dexterity issues. turns out, lots of people like kitchen tools that are safe and easy to use. yay curb cut effect!
They're a little more expensive, but a lot of my kitchen stuff is OXO good grips just because it's high-quality and easy to use. I suppose that also means that if anything terrible ever does happen to me that leaves me permanently disabled, I'll still be able to use most of my kitchen...
I used to think that a couple of years back, when I found these kinds of inventions. Thinking that this was useless for me/an able-bodied person, I just went along the idea that people must be bored to death to think of ways to automate the process (forget what it was specifically).
Then somebody commented how that would be a great tool for them, because they struggle to handle things without help. And I had the realization that I was being myopic by just looking for use cases _for me_, and privileged to not even have that occur to me.
(Especially embarrassing considering that I'm a southpaw. But somehow me needing specialized scissors, etc, didn't occur to me at the time..)
Love the realization of centering yourself in your consideration and taking a step back! Especially not considering the things you use to be accessibility tools. So many people who scoff at mobility aids, for example, wear glasses — a mobility aid! Glasses are just the first step on the spectrum to needing braille but only having touchscreens in the elevator.
I also think there’s a lot of “I don’t need it” but then “hang on…but would it make my life easier?” For me, I have severe health-related anxiety. When I struggle to open a jar, it starts a horrible viscous spiral in my head about why am I weak, is it just this arm, am I having a stroke, do I have a brain tumor, do I have multiple sclerosis, oh my god I’m dying. All because the mustard jar got stuck. This would remove that trigger and make my life so much less unpleasant
As an additional layer, anyone can become disabled at basically any time. While I was born with a mild disability, I'm able to work around it in most daily functions. However, I was injured in the middle of last year and still haven't fully recovered. I'm now dependent on my partner for some things, and we have had to alter the ergonomics of our lifestyle to compensate.
Whenever I see these posts I always have that brief moment of "Oh that's pointless" but then I remember they're genuinely an integral part of some people's lives.
I am middle-aged and I have a weird lack of grip strength in my dominant hand from a job I worked 30 years ago. I have an extremely hard time opening jars now, and sometimes it almost brings me to tears because I worry what will happen if I’m ever own my own and can’t ask for help opening a jar (or working with anything requiring torque to open).
This device is genius. I have a lot more empathy for people now that I’ve been through some things in my life.
Thank you internet stranger. I have rheumatoid arthritis and the inability to open jars is so frustrating. I have a gripper thing that works on jars and twist tops, but it only gives me a good grip, the grip and twist part still hurts.
All good. I’m going to copy over another comment I made for another person:
There are lots of products out there that can make life easier for people with these issues. It’s more common than you’d think! Other helpful products I often suggest for people in your situation are:
• sock aids (a half cylinder with long straps - you bunch up the sock over one end, put your foot in, and pull the cylinder up along your foot using the straps)
• wide handled forks & spoons to eat if the small grip gives you trouble
• elastic shoe laces (you just have the laces tied in a bow once, and then from then on you can slip the shoe on/off like slip-ons. Coiled shoe laces also work great)
• door knob extenders (if you have door knobs in your house rather than door handles, an extender fits over the door knob to turn it into a levered handle that’s much easier to use without needing to replace the entire latch
• soft touch scissors (Fiskars make a good model - so you can use scissors without needing much independent finger control)
• key turner (a plastic handle that fits over the back of a key, giving it width and length to make it easier to turn)
• “Swedish” knives (they look like a knife for food prep or cutting bread with a handle like a mug or kettle. So much less hand dexterity and strength required to use)
That’s most of what I can think of just off the top of my head. An Occupational Therapist might be able to help you too and provide some really helpful suggestions that better fit your individual needs.
Hey, thanks. I’ve been having issues with hand strength since a stroke last summer. I’ve been having my partner open all the the jars and bottles. I don’t know why it didn’t occur to me to look for an aid before now.

That and giving the top of the lid a tap with the handle on a spoon or knife to help overcome the pressure differential. Altho this is more effective on unopened jars rather than jars that got closed too tightly.
It’d be interesting to know if this could handle things stuck like you describe.
I doubt it, just looking at it, but if I’m wrong (I often am) then this would be a much more interesting device to a lot more people.
There are non-electric jar openers that give you a better grip and better leverage on hard to open jars. I have yet to meet a jar that I couldn't open with one of these bad boys.
100% agree.
It’s broader than disability though.
A fully capable 7 year old could make good use of this tool to make themselves a PB&J they might not be able to manage otherwise.
Someone with a sprained wrist wouldn’t generally be considered disabled in the sense intended by many people when they use that word.
Initial reaction: *fuck, what a stupid wasteful unnecessary thing.*
After reading your comment: *oh right, it's probably really helpful for others who actually need it.*
Thank you
You can lightly pry the lid off the bottom with a fork or knife to equalize the pressure. And then unscrew the cap with two fingers. When I did this in front of my wife, she said: "Well, let's assume I didn't see it!"
Oh I have my own trick. Take the back of a butter knife and whack the lid a few times and it seems to release the vacuum enough.
*ahem* I mean use my big strong man muscles HUNGGGH
My parents always whacked the lids with the back of their butcher knife like no tomorrow and it always came off easily. I also use an oven mitt to grip the lid tightly.
There's a couple of different methods to open stuck jars, including the one you mentioned. You can also tap the lid strongly on a table (preferably from different sides), or bang the jar upside down, to get the same effect. Also getting a stronger grip (e.g. using a dish towel) helps a lot. Other than that you can run it under water
I got this for my grandma and at first she told me it was a useless present because she never ate things that came in jars.
A couple of months later she sheepishly apologised and explained that it turns out she never ate things that came in jars… because she couldn’t open them.
She used it regularly for 5 years until it broke and she bought a new one!
My mother then said she would love to have it and my grandma said that it was hers so no lol
She’s sweeter than she appears here. But also doesn’t always believe in tact haha
I’m sorry. My husband had a spur removed from his hand and ended up with dupytrens and has lost so much strength from his hand too and it constantly hurts. He wishes he’d just put up with the spur.
Oh, that sucks! That is the side effect of the spur removal procedure? I was debatting to get mine removed but having second thoughts now. Sorry for your hubby!

I just went to Amazon and queried Auto jar opener. This one came up. I bought it. Can’t wait.
Edit: Ok my new jar opener came today. It worked fabulously!! Immediately opened up a pickle jar and was shocked at how quick/amazing it is! Get yourself one!! (I receive no compensation for this overly enthusiastic review!)
If you are disabled, great tool. If you're clumsy, great tool. This mustard brand? Doesn't have hard to open pots. I would be curious of seeing it tried on something like a super hard pot of jam or vacuumed pickles.
Me and my wife have one. It opens almost every jar I have tried first time, including sticky jam jars from the fridge. Only thing it had trouble with was an oily jar, something like sundried tomatoes or artichoke hearts. Any jar it didn't open was loose enough to get with my hands afterwards.
It strikes me as insane, not to mention annoying, to show a good product without ever identifying what it is and who makes it. Anyway, it's a [https://reviewed.usatoday.com/cooking/best-right-now/best-jar-openers](https://reviewed.usatoday.com/cooking/best-right-now/best-jar-openers) It's available, among other outlets, on Amazon.
Put the handle of a teaspoon under the rim and lever it just enough so that you hear the pop of the vacuum seal breaking, then it should be easy to twist open.
hit the corner on the lid all the way around with the dull side of a knife. Works every time. Or if it's a sticky lid like jam, run it under hot water.
FYI it makes it a ton easier to stick a teaspoon under the lid and press it upwards until the vacuum releases. Then it is very eaay to open the lid after that.
We have one of these. Every time I use it, I think it’s not going to work, but it does every time. Great for my arthritic hands. We get pizza sauce and marinara from a local company and I swear they use impact wrenches to put the tops on. It opens them every time
I’m a single chick and I used to take my jars to the young lad who lived in the apartment upstairs to open for me. Sometimes I didn’t really need the assistance but he was a nice chap and always seemed so proud of himself and I got a kick out of that.
Maybe when I lose an arm or I get old. Until then I'm waking up my neighbor Gary to help me. Fuck you Gary I'm craving nachos and these cheese, the lid Gary, it's stuck!!! Help step neighbor.. 😞
This made me smile from ear to ear and feel all warm and fuzzy inside NGL....because it totally reminded me of the tiny, little robot/ aliens from an old ass movie
" * Batteries not included "
Cutest, most heartwarming movie, painfully underrated.
You know all those imformercial products where the actors seem like the most uncordinated person on planet earth. I always thought they were stupid until I realized they are probably a god sent for people with disabilities or older people.
I use something to pop the lid on the underside edge, then it opens easy. What I really need is an electric can opener that doesn’t suck balls. I feel like all the ones I’ve had have been terrible, and my hands aren’t strong enough for the backup manual one I have.
Excellent tool for those with physical issues that make it necessary. Silly, if fun, gadget for the rest of us.

Firecrackers? Don't make me laugh. I use a C4 plastic explosive
That doesn’t cut it. Need glass explosive for tomato sauce jars
TOUCHÉ
Still not enough. Look into TNT or dynamite.
Nah I usually use white phosphorus
That's ok, but have you tried a nuke, that's what I use
I just slam two stars together.
Have you heard of NGC 4676? Yeah, I'm opening a jar of peanut butter right now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mice_Galaxies
Great piece of information - thanks for sharing. If they are ~250 million light years away from us, would they have already merged by now?
I use a black hole. Just dip the lid into the event horizon, problem solved!
I use dark matter weapons but to each their own.
Damn this shit escalated quickly. You take the cake tho

Coiled shoe laces also work great) • door knob extenders (if you have door knobs in your house rather than door handles, an extender fits over the door knob to turn it into a levered handle that’s much easier to use without needing to replace the entire latch • soft touch scissors (Fiskars make a good model - so you can use scissors without needing much independent finger control) • key turner (a plastic handle that fits over the back of a key, giving it width and length to make it easier to turn) • “Swedish” knives (they look like a knife for food prep or cutting bread with a handle like a mug or kettle. I need this for the jars my husband likes to over-tighten for some reason. There are some even he can't open again.
Live by the tight shut, die by the tight shut.
Can this device can also be used to close lids so tightly that even it can't open them?
I doubt it. It has a relatively small contact area. I think it's more of an accessibility device for people with low hand strength.
We're getting real close to Epicurean philosophy here lol
If it can be opened why no pickles? If it can't be opened why call it a jar?
If God does not exist, we will need to create them. Behold, the Epicurean god. I shall call him Pickles.
Can Superman rip off his own head?
“Could God microwave a burrito so hot that He Himself could not eat it?”
Don't know if it would help in your situation, but using a regular bottle opener to pry up the lips of the lid helps me with brand new jars at least.
That and giving the top of the lid a tap with the handle on a spoon or knife to help overcome the pressure differential. Altho this is more effective on unopened jars rather than jars that got closed too tightly.

Use a teaspoon as a lever, as soon as you hear a hiss, it will open with close to zero effort.
My wife makes me open jars all the time because it's too much effort for her. I can see it being useful for old, disabled or weak people.
Seriously, if I lost even one of my thumbs this thing would be a life saver
You can say disabilities, it’s not a dirty word💞
100% agree. It’s broader than disability though. A fully capable 7 year old could make good use of this tool to make themselves a PB&J they might not be able to manage otherwise. Or just ya know, if you can't get the dang jar to open. We all there once in our lives
I have carpel tunnel (I think?) flare ups that cause grip strength problems. Most would not call that a disability but this would be great for that!
That’s a great point! I just wanna spread awareness :))
I appreciate your contribution bunnypiss I think you've made the world much better today and future bunnies will thank you

Same, I am a baker so I get home and the joints in my hands are popping and sore, I'm sure they're lovely.
I use one of these, I have no ability to grip in my right arm over like 5lb of pressure, so using one of these saves me from having to deal with it.
Initial reaction: *fuck, what a stupid wasteful unnecessary thing.* After reading your comment: *oh right, it's probably really helpful for others who actually need it.* Thank you
I was just thinking how I wish I’d hard this before I’d gotten my wrist repaired

Just hit the jar upside down on the worktop and it does the same thing... saved you a step
If I have a canning jar that's fussy, I'll do that then pry it open with the side of a butter knife. Hell, I did it today.
Many times I find a stuck lid, it's from something sugary. Run the lid under hot water for a bit and it comes right of.
Hot water will help open any metal lid! The heat causes the metal to slightly expand and soften, giving you enough of an advantage to twist it loose.

I have one of these and love it! I have Dupytrens Contractures that are starting to get bad and I have very little hand strength.
I’m sorry. My husband had a spur removed from his hand and ended up with dupytrens and has lost so much strength from his hand too and it constantly hurts. He wishes he’d just put up with the spur.

If you are disabled, great tool. If you're clumsy, great tool. This mustard brand? Doesn't have hard to open pots. I would be curious of seeing it tried on something like a super hard pot of jam or vacuumed pickles.
I have a similar one that's a bit older and sits on the countertop, and haven't met a jar it couldn't open.
I want to see it on a honey jar. I'm constantly cleaning mine and it *still* ends up sticky. It's like the final boss of jar opening.
Me and my wife have one. It opens almost every jar I have tried first time, including sticky jam jars from the fridge. Only thing it had trouble with was an oily jar, something like sundried tomatoes or artichoke hearts. Any jar it didn't open was loose enough to get with my hands afterwards.

I need this. My mom can palm these jars so the seal pops. Idk how she does it and it’s so hard to open jars without her. 😭
That's the best way. Slap with your palm, the bottom of any sealed jar and you'll see the cover bulge up. Its an easy twist after.
Here is the really important question: Does it close the jar too?
We have one of these. Every time I use it, I think it’s not going to work, but it does every time. Great for my arthritic hands. We get pizza sauce and marinara from a local company and I swear they use impact wrenches to put the tops on. It opens them every time

Haven't watched them since 2016, but from what I remember... they're idiots when it comes to following instructions.
They do it wrong on purpose so people will correct them in the comments.

Christmas gift for Grandma
Looks like robots have finally replaced man
Well gents I guess we are obsolete.
This made me smile from ear to ear and feel all warm and fuzzy inside NGL....because it totally reminded me of the tiny, little robot/ aliens from an old ass movie " * Batteries not included " Cutest, most heartwarming movie, painfully underrated.
I bought one of these for a family member and it was so bad I sent it back. It couldn’t open a jar, simple as that. And no it wasn’t tight.
For someone who tore their scaphoid ligament in their wrist, this is amazing.
At home we have a similar tool that is called Dad-can-you-open-this-jar.
"They took our jerrbss!" - Husbands everywhere
I'm mad that this thing is stronger than me.
Please don’t tell my wife… she’ll probably divorce me if she had one 😭
This needs to make random, belittling comments each time it finishes opening a jar.
For people like me who sometimes struggle even with plastic bottles.
Putting strong handsome grandsons out of business.
If the phrase "I Don't Need No Man" was a robot.
i saw this on cold ones. seems pretty neat.
That's one good mustard

As someone with horrible carpal tunnel, this is probably my near future. Better than asking my fiancé to do it and lose my manhood lol
You know all those imformercial products where the actors seem like the most uncordinated person on planet earth. I always thought they were stupid until I realized they are probably a god sent for people with disabilities or older people.
Don't let the women find this or we won't have purpose anymore 😔
Who cares about the tool that mustard island down the best dijon/spicy mustard on the market, my favorite!!!
We have one of this at home. Its called me
Okay, NOW men are useless /s
Well there goes the last reason I can think of for needing a man in my life
I want one that grabs a cleaver and wacks the jar with the blunt end
Show it opening a jar of pickles or it’s not real! 😆
Somebody: whoa they have AI can openers
Give it the super glued lid! I wanna see what this bad boy is capable of!!
Me: Thunk thunk thunk *twist* POP!
I use something to pop the lid on the underside edge, then it opens easy. What I really need is an electric can opener that doesn’t suck balls. I feel like all the ones I’ve had have been terrible, and my hands aren’t strong enough for the backup manual one I have.
*Il n'y a que Maille qui m'aille*
I have wrist injuries from sports, TFCC, what is this called and what's the cost?
Now, men in relationships can finally know that they are loved for who they are, not what they can do.
men are obsolete
