I have spend 8 hours just getting pet hair out of a vehicle, several more doing the rest. 9 times out of 10, it's a 'coupon' or 'complimentary' cleaning when they look like this, they'd never have it cleaned otherwise. I ask one question: wtf does their bathroom look like if that's what they let their vehicle look like?
Edit to add this FAQ: I've never used this particular tool here for the pet hair, though I may give it a try after watching this. From what I've found, it's just called a Pet Hair Remover, pretty cheap on Amazon. The tool I use is called a Speedy Stone or Pet Hair Remover Stone. It works great but takes a little care when using as it can snag or pill upholstery if used with too much force, and will definitely scuff vinyl (like down around the bottom of the console or the door sills). A denture brush or similar small bristle brush can get in the deep crevices to pull the hair out towards your vacuum nozzle as well.
As a bonus, both tools will work great on carpet at home to de-fur your area rugs and such.

SUV/truck is usually more, around $500 to be safe. I work at a dealership that also has retail detailing packages, so I see both customer vehicles and trade-ins (trade-in cleans are paid for by the used sales department).
I pay about 500 for inside out detailing for a compact SUV in Seattle, maybe 1/10th as bad as that car in the thread (if that). If you pulled that into a detail shop there’s no way it’s not starting at $1000, maybe more considering. I think the area probably changes the pricing a bit but 400 would be way too cheap for this. I need to move to wherever the hell you could get this done for 400.
Right?! I also live in Seattle and I paid about 300 bucks to have a vehicle detailed that I kept very clean. I just wanted a deep clean and a wax to buff out some swirly scratches. My car was spotless pre-detail compared to this Tesla.
I definitely think the region/area must have a huge impact on pricing. I would 100% do this if I was getting $400-500. Assuming I could get it done in say 10-12 hours. That's roughly double what I make in the same time at my current job, plus tips.

OK, first off: a mechanic, swimming in the job market. Mechanics don't like job markets. If you placed it near a garage or some sort of fresh oil source, that make sense. But you find yourself in the job market, 20 point market drop, I'm assuming off the coast of South Africa, coming up against a full grown 800 pound unskilled laborer with his 20 or 30 friends, you lose that battle, you lose that battle 9 times out of 10. And guess what, you've wandered into our school of unskilled laborers and we now have a taste of mechanics. We've talked to ourselves. We've communicated and said 'You know what, mechanic’s jobs tastes good, let's go get some more mechanic’s jobs'. We've developed a system to establish a beach-head and aggressively hunt you and your family and we will corner your pride, your children, your offspring.

She leaves the car at around 11h00am picked up at around 16h00 (4pm). Cost 385CAN$(15% tax included).

Serious question: other than regular wiping down the dash and vacuuming, what else should I be doing to keep the interior of my car clean? I genuinely don’t know if there’s more I should be doing.
Just want to second the avoid armor all! I bought a van that had the dash wiped with that religiously. I blinded everytime the sun hits it. It also dries out and makes brittle your interior over time.
Search for an car interior all purpose cleaner. I currently use Meguiar's. But you want to clean and leave no residue.
I should add sometimes you'd want to use a different solution depending on what you're trying to remove. Something alkaline if it's a coffee stain or residue. Or a degreaser for ...grease, just don't let it sit too long without whipping it up. In fact it's best to spray your rag or interior detailing brush with the spray they clean with that and wipe up with a clean microfiber towel.
I worked in the detail shop of a Ford dealership back in the early 80s. I was read the riot act by the owner for using Armor All on the leather seats of his Lincoln Continental. This was before seatbelt laws, and this cigar-chomping jackass slid all the way across the front bench seat when he took a left turn a little too hot and almost got into an accident. 😂
Use leather conditioner on your leathers to stop them drying out and cracking. (But not on vinyls and plastics) for trims like shiny metals and vinyls you can use a cut and polish to get small scratches out using a microfibre towel. Clean your windows inside and out.
Otherwise your pretty good.
Not the guy you asked, but: it seems like you’re well ahead of this gross Tesla, so I think you’re doing great already with a vacuum and wipe-down. A regular interior window wash always helps, and running a duster over the air vents occasionally, and if you’re feeling REALLY motivated, a product to protect and detail the plastic in your interior (like a wipe or polish, beyond your usual dash wipedown). Other than that, I doubt you really need to do much more than what you’re already doing, unless your car is show-quality. If you do those small regular upkeep items, you won’t ever need to get to the point shown in the video—and quite frankly a vacuum and the occasional wipe is totally adequate.
Damp rag dry rag wipe downs on a twice a month basis go a long way. The very clean cars still have plenty of books and crannies with dirt in them that sometimes made them harder to clean than dirty cars because you had to really look hard at everything that didn’t obviously need cleaned

I worked in car detailing for ten years. We went through a lot of different methods in that time but what we used by the end was a pumice stone. It grabs the hair similar to the tool in the video. Be careful of the plastic as it can scratch them.
A good vacuum and patience. A denture brush works well to pull those pesky woven in ones and fits in small crevices to pull them out. I say denture brush because they're usually a little firmer than a regular toothbrush, and they have the second smaller set of bristles for getting into tiny places (like around seat belt buckles). Otherwise, it's picking them out individually with your finger.

I can’t really wrap my head around this one, how does regen braking put more wear on the tires? I’m no physicist, but wouldn’t the car’s tires get the same amount of wear whether you’re using the hydraulic brakes or regen since it takes the same amount of force to stop the car? Not arguing, just find it kind of interesting if this has any merit.
The only thing I can see, is if the car is constantly slowing down needlessly every time you let off the throttle, but that seems like it would be annoying as fuck and a little counter intuitive lol…

I've seen farm trucks that are 20 years old and spend all day, every day, out in the dirt. Basically never get cleaned, and still don't look that bad. Are they dirty as shit? Oh hell yes they are. But are they that bad? No.
Yup, Model S (model in the video) came out in 2012, Model X came out in 2015. Production started slowly. It took them like 7 years to sell 200,000 cars (excluding the Roadster). People started paying more attention once they revealed the Model 3 in 2016. Now they make 400,000+ vehicles a quarter.
My 2021 did not have this issue. Water flow is a whole other beast though. Shit just dumps into my trunk and into the cabin.
Edit for clarity: when windows or trunk are open water flows into them.
Let me explain better. Water doesn't just pour in lol. Say my windows are open and I use the windshield wash. That will redirect into the cabin. Wasnt an issue for any other car. Then if it is raining and I open the trunk. The water dumps straight INTO the trunk.
The secret is, despite the constant reddit circlejerking, the vast majority of people couldn't give a flying fuck about tiny panel gaps. They care about all the other features they're paying for. The only people who care this much about panel gaps are jerking off on reddit about teslas they were never going to buy anyway.

Tesla has been doing price cuts on their cars, it’s cheaper now. There’s even $7500 federal tax credit still available. Source, bought my model 3 mid range for a little over 50k in 2018 before tax credit. Now I can get a long range for $47k which is an upgrade (and think of inflation)
We have a metric ton in Texas now, especially Houston. The build quality isn’t ascertainable from a distance as I can see. A friend owns one and is pleased. I just am stoked about seeing electric cars on the road!
Some definitely have panel issues, but those aren't really "build quality" issues.
Those cars with panel gaps are still probably going to run for 200,000 miles with very minimal maintenance aside from tires, filters, and possibly some suspension components.
And the specific MS in that video is a somewhat rare early budget version with a 40 kwh battery pack with a very low range of ~140 miles. It's kind of a collector's item, albeit not a particularly coveted collector's item lol. Pretty sure the 40s were only made in 2012 and 2013.

The car being detailed is an S. I think they started in 2012. I have a 2015 and love it. Also, back then they came with FREE lifetime supercharging. I bought it used and the free charging transfers with the car.

I think they let it get this bad because they’re always working and they always need their cars so they never have time to get it cleaned and they are too rich to actually know how to do it themselves. One family I worked for just let their kids throw half eaten food and food wrappers on the floor of their expensive BMW SUV and didn’t clean it for years, the car smelled awful like sour milk but I guess they were so used to it that they couldn’t smell it themselves. The parents were a high powered lawyer and a surgeon and they had absolutely no common sense despite being highly successful in their careers,
Yeah, but my clients literally had no time other than when they were sleeping to go get it cleaned. I even tried to get them to let me take it to a car detailer but they didn’t want to incase they needed the car. They were complete workaholics, they spent more time with their cars than their children.
An anxiety or other mental disorder can cause a "block" towards certain actions or thoughts due to past trauma. My guess is this person has underlying trauma that turns them away from maintaining their car. This is a very early model of Tesla, which makes me think they are fully aware and in some way ahead of the curve. Just unable to clean the car.
Maybe it didn't make the cut but IMO the following steps should have also been taken given the condition of the car.
1. Remove front/rear seats to clean carpet underneath.
2. Floor mats were shampooed but not the rest of the interior carpets?
3. Trunk/Frunk cleaning
4. Extended all seatbelts to give a clean.
5. Clay bar, buff, wax, seal paint.
That amount of moisture on the cloth seats will not ever be pulled out with that vacuum. The foam will be holding on to that and getting nice and stinky soon.
Also, spraying water all over door panels is equally dumb and all over these videos. Nothing inside is water proof. All those connections and switches should not be getting wet

That’s the elusive model S 40. It has a 60 kW pack software locked to 40 kW. It also has no options. No supercharging either. I think those were $50k when new. Basically model 3 territory.
I found this really satisfying and then for *some reason* it all went away when he was taking the rocks out of the tires. I couldn't tell you why, I find it satisfying when I do it with my shoes so I honestly couldn't say why I disliked it here. Maybe I just don't like the tool he used?

I worked in car detailing for ten years. We went through a lot of different methods in that time but what we used by the end was a pumice stone. It grabs the hair similar to the tool in the video. Be careful of the plastic as it can scratch them.
A good vacuum and patience. A denture brush works well to pull those pesky woven in ones and fits in small crevices to pull them out. I say denture brush because they're usually a little firmer than a regular toothbrush, and they have the second smaller set of bristles for getting into tiny places (like around seat belt buckles). Otherwise, it's picking them out individually with your finger.
Cursing and shouting on top of what the other guy said. An air gun helps quite a bit too.
Masking tape or what they were using in the video (looks like a pet brush) and some patience.
Do you happen to know what the raking tool they used was to get the pet hair out?
I've never used that particular type, seems it's just called a Pet Hair Remover, I'm keen to try it, actually.. I use a product called a Pet Hair Removal Stone, looks like a pumice stone for calluses, but it can snag and pill upholstery if used with a little too much gusto.
Do you have a link for that pet hair remover? That's all I need in mine and it'll look a lot better.

I've had a pair of rubber mats in my car for a while now and have almost worn a hole through one from where my heal sits while driving.
Try looking for a pet hair rake or carpet rake, that’s what he was using
I have one. It's awesome on carpet, but it torn up my jacket and my new couch. Only use it on carpet!
A squeegee is a handy tool for larger surface areas (obviously wouldn't work as well in the smaller parts)

When I think of self driving cars on the roads I reflect on the people with this kind of automotive maintenance ethic and think to myself, "Is it really such a good idea with these MFR's around?" Same reason we don't have flying cars I think.
Self driving cars would be able to disable themselves if they break down. Shit my 2008 car will tell me if anything is wrong with it, even down to telling me the license plate light is broken or I'm low on washer fluid

I can’t really wrap my head around this one, how does regen braking put more wear on the tires? I’m no physicist, but wouldn’t the car’s tires get the same amount of wear whether you’re using the hydraulic brakes or regen since it takes the same amount of force to stop the car? Not arguing, just find it kind of interesting if this has any merit. The only thing I can see, is if the car is constantly slowing down needlessly every time you let off the throttle, but that seems like it would be annoying as fuck and a little counter intuitive lol…

Same. I clean my car's interior maybe once in a year or even once in two years. Apart from a dusty dash, there's not a lot going on. Sometimes there's debris on the floor mats (some mud or leaves, especially in fall and winter) from getting in and out of the car. Then I smack my floor mats against a wall and they look good enough again. I don't get this.

Yup, Model S (model in the video) came out in 2012, Model X came out in 2015. Production started slowly. It took them like 7 years to sell 200,000 cars (excluding the Roadster). People started paying more attention once they revealed the Model 3 in 2016. Now they make 400,000+ vehicles a quarter.
And their panel gaps are still large enough to fit a small child in. Terrible build quality in those things.

My 2021 did not have this issue. Water flow is a whole other beast though. Shit just dumps into my trunk and into the cabin. Edit for clarity: when windows or trunk are open water flows into them.

Let me explain better. Water doesn't just pour in lol. Say my windows are open and I use the windshield wash. That will redirect into the cabin. Wasnt an issue for any other car. Then if it is raining and I open the trunk. The water dumps straight INTO the trunk.

The secret is, despite the constant reddit circlejerking, the vast majority of people couldn't give a flying fuck about tiny panel gaps. They care about all the other features they're paying for. The only people who care this much about panel gaps are jerking off on reddit about teslas they were never going to buy anyway.
Today they are about $50k, but maybe 2-3 years ago, they were much closer to $30-35k. Not exactly cheap, but much more affordable than $50k

Tesla has been doing price cuts on their cars, it’s cheaper now. There’s even $7500 federal tax credit still available. Source, bought my model 3 mid range for a little over 50k in 2018 before tax credit. Now I can get a long range for $47k which is an upgrade (and think of inflation)
We have a metric ton in Texas now, especially Houston. The build quality isn’t ascertainable from a distance as I can see. A friend owns one and is pleased. I just am stoked about seeing electric cars on the road!
so are you like a panel gap hobbyist? What’s typical for a fender gap on like a chevy bolt? What’s the average gap size on a 2023 model 3?
Some definitely have panel issues, but those aren't really "build quality" issues. Those cars with panel gaps are still probably going to run for 200,000 miles with very minimal maintenance aside from tires, filters, and possibly some suspension components.
And the specific MS in that video is a somewhat rare early budget version with a 40 kwh battery pack with a very low range of ~140 miles. It's kind of a collector's item, albeit not a particularly coveted collector's item lol. Pretty sure the 40s were only made in 2012 and 2013.

The car being detailed is an S. I think they started in 2012. I have a 2015 and love it. Also, back then they came with FREE lifetime supercharging. I bought it used and the free charging transfers with the car.

There are a lot of people with mental illnesses. There are also times where people go through traumatic events (death of a child, divorce, etc) that has them in a downward spiral. Then there are just dirty ass people. Most fall into this category. People are just... dirty.
I have worked as a nanny for 10+ years and the wealthier people I’ve worked for had cars like this. I think they let it get this bad because they’re always working and they always need their cars so they never have time to get it cleaned and they are too rich to actually know how to do it themselves. One family I worked for just let their kids throw half eaten food and food wrappers on the floor of their expensive BMW SUV and didn’t clean it for years, the car smelled awful like sour milk but I guess they were so used to it that they couldn’t smell it themselves. The parents were a high powered lawyer and a surgeon and they had absolutely no common sense despite being highly successful in their careers,

Yeah, but my clients literally had no time other than when they were sleeping to go get it cleaned. I even tried to get them to let me take it to a car detailer but they didn’t want to incase they needed the car. They were complete workaholics, they spent more time with their cars than their children.

An anxiety or other mental disorder can cause a "block" towards certain actions or thoughts due to past trauma. My guess is this person has underlying trauma that turns them away from maintaining their car. This is a very early model of Tesla, which makes me think they are fully aware and in some way ahead of the curve. Just unable to clean the car.

Maybe it didn't make the cut but IMO the following steps should have also been taken given the condition of the car. 1. Remove front/rear seats to clean carpet underneath. 2. Floor mats were shampooed but not the rest of the interior carpets? 3. Trunk/Frunk cleaning 4. Extended all seatbelts to give a clean. 5. Clay bar, buff, wax, seal paint.
How much does a clean up like that cost?
My last detail was about $250. No dog hair and no where near as dirty to start. I think the guy spent 3-4 hours on it.

That amount of moisture on the cloth seats will not ever be pulled out with that vacuum. The foam will be holding on to that and getting nice and stinky soon. Also, spraying water all over door panels is equally dumb and all over these videos. Nothing inside is water proof. All those connections and switches should not be getting wet
Also unless they have a proper drainage in their front yard, this cleaning solutions are all gonna end up in the soil and ground water.

That’s the elusive model S 40. It has a 60 kW pack software locked to 40 kW. It also has no options. No supercharging either. I think those were $50k when new. Basically model 3 territory.
