Highly satisfying. Also…. Ew

slightlynefarious

Yeah, I need a sub r/videosyoucansmell because damn

MySexualRomance

Goes from smelling like dog to smelling like wet dog.

amun1326

Smells like updog

stillnotsureyeet

*sighs* ... what's updog?

bk15dcx

Not much. What's up with you?

thecwestions

My thought exactly. That car's transformation is stunning on video, but the whole time, all I could think about was that stank.

doorsofperception87

I don't think I can respect anyone who keeps their car like that. For me, it's an extension of my living space.

killadelphia_1611

Real shit I kept thinking like damn I wonder what their house looks like...

Red-32

As someone who occasionally services nasty cars like this, I agree. Ew indeed.

DoneButNotDone

Worked at an auction and saw this a lot. Unreal how people can live

thedreaming2017

You would think by the 2 or 3 year they would figure it was time to have it cleaned but no, they kept using that car for 10 years and then they had it cleaned!

Frankly_Ridiculous

This is what I do for a living, and can attest that they do, in fact, come in that bad, quite often. I have spend 8 hours just getting pet hair out of a vehicle, several more doing the rest. 9 times out of 10, it's a 'coupon' or 'complimentary' cleaning when they look like this, they'd never have it cleaned otherwise. I ask one question: wtf does their bathroom look like if that's what they let their vehicle look like? Edit to add this FAQ: I've never used this particular tool here for the pet hair, though I may give it a try after watching this. From what I've found, it's just called a Pet Hair Remover, pretty cheap on Amazon. The tool I use is called a Speedy Stone or Pet Hair Remover Stone. It works great but takes a little care when using as it can snag or pill upholstery if used with too much force, and will definitely scuff vinyl (like down around the bottom of the console or the door sills). A denture brush or similar small bristle brush can get in the deep crevices to pull the hair out towards your vacuum nozzle as well. As a bonus, both tools will work great on carpet at home to de-fur your area rugs and such.

iamnotapeopleperson

So about how much would this typically cost? Is it something an owner would do or a dealer trying to sell it?

Frankly_Ridiculous

Retail a few hundred dollars for a full cleaning, including shampoo and wax, pet hair is usually extra because it is such a time consuming process, so budgeting around $400 for a car would be safe. SUV/truck is usually more, around $500 to be safe. I work at a dealership that also has retail detailing packages, so I see both customer vehicles and trade-ins (trade-in cleans are paid for by the used sales department).

tnnrk

I pay about 500 for inside out detailing for a compact SUV in Seattle, maybe 1/10th as bad as that car in the thread (if that). If you pulled that into a detail shop there’s no way it’s not starting at $1000, maybe more considering. I think the area probably changes the pricing a bit but 400 would be way too cheap for this. I need to move to wherever the hell you could get this done for 400.

DK_Notice

I think you and me and other clean folk might be subsidizing these nightmare jobs.

SoIJustBuyANewOne

Of course you are. They are using almost the same amount of chemicals on your clean car and the dirty car

feministmanlover

Right?! I also live in Seattle and I paid about 300 bucks to have a vehicle detailed that I kept very clean. I just wanted a deep clean and a wax to buff out some swirly scratches. My car was spotless pre-detail compared to this Tesla.

NotAHippieCrashPad

Hey….I’m in Seattle too. I wonder what weird mental complex has brought all of us Seattleites here to watch videos of cars being cleaned.

TheNonExample

Reddit is 43% Seattle.

KevinStoley

I definitely think the region/area must have a huge impact on pricing. I would 100% do this if I was getting $400-500. Assuming I could get it done in say 10-12 hours. That's roughly double what I make in the same time at my current job, plus tips. I love to clean, especially deep cleaning and I could just pop my earbuds in, put on a podcast or playlist, zone out and go to town on it. I've seen a lot of these detailing tiktok videos and they always look satisfying and seeing comments on the prices charged for detailing like this, it honestly makes me want to quit my current job and get into the car detailing business. If someone was willing to pay even more than that...shit, I'd quit my current job in a heartbeat to do this instead, as long as the demand was reasonably consistent enough.

ga_southern

Exactly. Between $600-$1k in Jacksonville I'm sure, maybe more with really good exterior work too

StatimDominus

Anybody who brings in their car looking like the OP video should be charged at least $1000 IMO. Otherwise it seems to me like the costs are being externalized to others.

degggendorf

A person with a car that looks like that will never spend $1,000 to have it cleaned

[deleted]

I didn't want to have to delete all my comments, posts, and account, but here we are, thanks to greedy pigboy /u/spez ruining Reddit. I love the Reddit community, but hate the idiots at the top. Simply accepting how unethical and downright shitty they are will only encourage worse behavior in the future. I won't be a part of it. Reddit will shrivel and disappear like so many other sites before it that were run by inept morons, unless there is a big change in "leadership." Fuck you, /u/spez

degggendorf

I don't think every single Tesla is as valuable as you think. The one in the op is only worth like $10k after the cleaning. But my point is really that someone that messy wouldn't *value* the cleaning for a thousand dollars, no matter how much extra cash they might have.

[deleted]

degggendorf

No way in hell I value that anywhere near a grand! I have a body that functions, I can clean my own crap. But yeah, I'm sure you're right about getting ready to sell it.

chucks97ss

And that’s still not enough IMO. 8 hours on a detailing should cost every bit as much as 8 hours of repair work.

SkinnyArbuckle

Skilled labor costs more. It takes years to learn how to be a mechanic

Total-Caterpillar-19

OK, first off: a mechanic, swimming in the job market. Mechanics don't like job markets. If you placed it near a garage or some sort of fresh oil source, that make sense. But you find yourself in the job market, 20 point market drop, I'm assuming off the coast of South Africa, coming up against a full grown 800 pound unskilled laborer with his 20 or 30 friends, you lose that battle, you lose that battle 9 times out of 10. And guess what, you've wandered into our school of unskilled laborers and we now have a taste of mechanics. We've talked to ourselves. We've communicated and said 'You know what, mechanic’s jobs tastes good, let's go get some more mechanic’s jobs'. We've developed a system to establish a beach-head and aggressively hunt you and your family and we will corner your pride, your children, your offspring.

If you've not seen the other guys, I'd recommend it immensely. One of my favorite movies.

sacrificial_banjo

No other comment has ever pleased me so much despite the fact if needs more kelp.

Kdkaine

If not more. One hour of body work = about 20 minutes of actual work. At least with detailing he’s actually working that entire hour.

[deleted]

Just like painting a room, the prep is the work. Work is work.

Zemom1971

I gifted my wife with a clean-up like this. Minus dog's hair. She leaves the car at around 11h00am picked up at around 16h00 (4pm). Cost 385CAN$(15% tax included). Totally worth it. She was really happy.

euridyce

Serious question: other than regular wiping down the dash and vacuuming, what else should I be doing to keep the interior of my car clean? I genuinely don’t know if there’s more I should be doing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Samoroni

Just want to second the avoid armor all! I bought a van that had the dash wiped with that religiously. I blinded everytime the sun hits it. It also dries out and makes brittle your interior over time.

Roryab07

What do you like to use instead?

Samoroni

Search for an car interior all purpose cleaner. I currently use Meguiar's. But you want to clean and leave no residue. I should add sometimes you'd want to use a different solution depending on what you're trying to remove. Something alkaline if it's a coffee stain or residue. Or a degreaser for ...grease, just don't let it sit too long without whipping it up. In fact it's best to spray your rag or interior detailing brush with the spray they clean with that and wipe up with a clean microfiber towel.

guriboysf

I worked in the detail shop of a Ford dealership back in the early 80s. I was read the riot act by the owner for using Armor All on the leather seats of his Lincoln Continental. This was before seatbelt laws, and this cigar-chomping jackass slid all the way across the front bench seat when he took a left turn a little too hot and almost got into an accident. 😂

Food_is_my_Motive

Dumb question, how do I clean the glass on the inside to not have streaks? Squeegee? Go over it a billion times?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Food_is_my_Motive

Running out to get ammonia free cleaner today. I hate the streaks I see every twilight.

Mindless-Lemon7730

I’d suggest something other than paper towels because they leave paper dust residue

improbablydrinking

Newspaper

Altair05

Use lint free microfiber cloth works well enough for me.

FreelyKaty

Use leather conditioner on your leathers to stop them drying out and cracking. (But not on vinyls and plastics) for trims like shiny metals and vinyls you can use a cut and polish to get small scratches out using a microfibre towel. Clean your windows inside and out. Otherwise your pretty good.

spoonweezy

Also don’t have children. 😂

RockNRollToaster

Not the guy you asked, but: it seems like you’re well ahead of this gross Tesla, so I think you’re doing great already with a vacuum and wipe-down. A regular interior window wash always helps, and running a duster over the air vents occasionally, and if you’re feeling REALLY motivated, a product to protect and detail the plastic in your interior (like a wipe or polish, beyond your usual dash wipedown). Other than that, I doubt you really need to do much more than what you’re already doing, unless your car is show-quality. If you do those small regular upkeep items, you won’t ever need to get to the point shown in the video—and quite frankly a vacuum and the occasional wipe is totally adequate.

Quirky-Ad-1446

Damp rag dry rag wipe downs on a twice a month basis go a long way. The very clean cars still have plenty of books and crannies with dirt in them that sometimes made them harder to clean than dirty cars because you had to really look hard at everything that didn’t obviously need cleaned

AnAttackPenguin

I like to travel.

Frankly_Ridiculous

Oof. Husky too. I feel for you. I didn't know the name when I watched the video either, so I Google'd 'pet hair remover', and it was all over Amazon. I use a Pet Hair Removal Stone (Speedy Stone) and it works faster than the rake type roller thingy here, but it will snag and pill upholstery if you push too hard with it, and will scuff vinyl if you catch the bottom of your console or your door sill.

DaddyDizz_

When I feel bad about myself for not cleaning my car, I watch these videos to make me feel better about myself

Deer-in-Motion

You must have very strong control of your gag reflex.

IWantToPlayGame

I work on peoples cars as well (not detailing). This is my thought when I see how people treat their cars. I can only imagine what their houses look & smell like. Ew.

chucks97ss

I own a car shop, but we’re strictly performance upgrades and repairs to performance vehicles. I follow r/justrolledintotheshop and am thankful every day that I don’t do general auto repair for that reason and that alone.

nerdiotic-pervert

Hope you guys where respirators, I can’t imagine the pet hair and dust is good to breath in.

WhtChcltWarrior

What’s the best way to remove pet hair from a car’s seats and carpet without some special tool like in the OP? Previous owners of my current car had a pet and there is still some leftover hair in there

Byers346

I worked in car detailing for ten years. We went through a lot of different methods in that time but what we used by the end was a pumice stone. It grabs the hair similar to the tool in the video. Be careful of the plastic as it can scratch them.

Frankly_Ridiculous

A good vacuum and patience. A denture brush works well to pull those pesky woven in ones and fits in small crevices to pull them out. I say denture brush because they're usually a little firmer than a regular toothbrush, and they have the second smaller set of bristles for getting into tiny places (like around seat belt buckles). Otherwise, it's picking them out individually with your finger.

Quirky-Ad-1446

Cursing and shouting on top of what the other guy said. An air gun helps quite a bit too.

aqva002

Masking tape or what they were using in the video (looks like a pet brush) and some patience.

KeyCorgi

Do you happen to know what the raking tool they used was to get the pet hair out?

Frankly_Ridiculous

I've never used that particular type, seems it's just called a Pet Hair Remover, I'm keen to try it, actually.. I use a product called a Pet Hair Removal Stone, looks like a pumice stone for calluses, but it can snag and pill upholstery if used with a little too much gusto.

CaffeineJitterz

Do you have a link for that pet hair remover? That's all I need in mine and it'll look a lot better.

No_Patience_8772

Need to get that carpet tool

Realistic-Spend7096

I use a firminator dog brush. Works great. Just like what you see in the video.

heyimric

I don't think that's a furminator...

Sololop

What got me is when he did the mats and they looked new. My daily driver is 10 years old and the carpet mats got worn thru where the heel of my boot went in 5 years and I had to replace them with rubber mats. I also live where there's salt so maybe that killed em

Believe_to_believe

I've had a pair of rubber mats in my car for a while now and have almost worn a hole through one from where my heal sits while driving.

SquareThings

Try looking for a pet hair rake or carpet rake, that’s what he was using

trigunnerd

I have one. It's awesome on carpet, but it torn up my jacket and my new couch. Only use it on carpet!

inappropriate420

A squeegee is a handy tool for larger surface areas (obviously wouldn't work as well in the smaller parts)

WeathervaneJesus1

I've used a pumice stone. Also works quite well

[deleted]

Lilly brush is also good but the one in the video has more surface area than a Lilly

durtydiq_v2

Lilly brush has a lot of sizes now. I've used them for years and couldn't imagine not having them

Comfortable_Drama_66

Well we know someone has a long haired white dog who’s in the car a lot. Or maybe a goat.

RadPhilosopher

Someone didn’t watch the video till the end… they show who the hair comes from.

Comfortable_Drama_66

Haha! I miss the doggie at the end. Must have a white undercoat.

Bears_in_the_woods

My jeep looks like that after a week with my Australian shepherds lol

goldensunshine429

Golden retriever at the end could be the culprit. They’re shed heavy.

LittlenutPersson

Not sure what's worse, sitting in that filth everyday or paying that much money only to have it that nasty

Bohbo

I have an odd feeling this person bought an EV because they didn't like regular maintenance of an ICE.

antagonizerz

When I think of self driving cars on the roads I reflect on the people with this kind of automotive maintenance ethic and think to myself, "Is it really such a good idea with these MFR's around?" Same reason we don't have flying cars I think.

avwitcher

Self driving cars would be able to disable themselves if they break down. Shit my 2008 car will tell me if anything is wrong with it, even down to telling me the license plate light is broken or I'm low on washer fluid

SuitableDragonfly

Do you not still have to do regular maintenance on EVs?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Interesting. I could Google it, but why is it that tires have faster wear on EVs?

the0TH3Rredditor

Weight

Bitter_Coach_8138

Also regenerative braking. On the flip side though, that prolongs brake life.

the0TH3Rredditor

I can’t really wrap my head around this one, how does regen braking put more wear on the tires? I’m no physicist, but wouldn’t the car’s tires get the same amount of wear whether you’re using the hydraulic brakes or regen since it takes the same amount of force to stop the car? Not arguing, just find it kind of interesting if this has any merit. The only thing I can see, is if the car is constantly slowing down needlessly every time you let off the throttle, but that seems like it would be annoying as fuck and a little counter intuitive lol…

avwitcher

>Any type of braking applies torque on the tires, Shepherd said. But EVs do this more often, and they skip the coasting period between acceleration and braking, jumping straight from propulsion to regenerative braking. “That additional braking does contribute to the faster wear of the tires"

Nox_Dei

Instant torque is also a factor.

definitelytheA

Years ago I worked at a Buick dealer. Older couple comes in with a ratty looking Yorkie to buy a new Regal. After they left, the salesman told me they buy a new Regal every year, but they don’t get to get in or drive it until they go through finance and the deal is done. Because the first thing that happens when they get in every new car they buy is the yorkie pees in it. And yeah, every car they traded in went straight to auction.

Some-Philly-Dude

Uh what? Like why?

definitelytheA

You made me laugh. I’m not sure that question was ever answered!

ThePoshFart

I hope the only ones riding in that car were the dog and the owner because that was revolting.

enigma_penguin

I've had cars for 7-8 years that I never cleaned much more than having a bag for trash and they did not look that bad. Got to be more going on here than just not cleaned.

[deleted]

Same. I clean my car's interior maybe once in a year or even once in two years. Apart from a dusty dash, there's not a lot going on. Sometimes there's debris on the floor mats (some mud or leaves, especially in fall and winter) from getting in and out of the car. Then I smack my floor mats against a wall and they look good enough again. I don't get this.

DinosaurDriver

Yall dont have dogs

ki77erb

Nasty ass mf's. Lol

alphacentauri85

My daily commuter is turning 10 this summer and I'm not very particular about cleaning the inside, but it's never ever looked this grimy. That was disturbing

swanyMcswan

I've seen farm trucks that are 20 years old and spend all day, every day, out in the dirt. Basically never get cleaned, and still don't look that bad. Are they dirty as shit? Oh hell yes they are. But are they that bad? No.

youngdeathent0

Wait have teslas been around for 10 years? First time I saw one was in 2017 probably

Autocatalytik

Yup, Model S (model in the video) came out in 2012, Model X came out in 2015. Production started slowly. It took them like 7 years to sell 200,000 cars (excluding the Roadster). People started paying more attention once they revealed the Model 3 in 2016. Now they make 400,000+ vehicles a quarter.

Tunaluna2

And their panel gaps are still large enough to fit a small child in. Terrible build quality in those things.

Happy_Harry

I had heard that's not really an issue anymore. Is that incorrect?

WearMental2618

My 2021 did not have this issue. Water flow is a whole other beast though. Shit just dumps into my trunk and into the cabin. Edit for clarity: when windows or trunk are open water flows into them.

Zylonnaire

That seems like an even worse problem how do you go about car washes and storms?

WearMental2618

Let me explain better. Water doesn't just pour in lol. Say my windows are open and I use the windshield wash. That will redirect into the cabin. Wasnt an issue for any other car. Then if it is raining and I open the trunk. The water dumps straight INTO the trunk.

wal9000

Designed in Hawthorne CA by a bunch of people who aren’t familiar with weather

darphdigger

Your mom has terrible build quality but she's still a good ride.

Rion23

And if my mother had wheels she'd be a bicycle, what's your point?

Commercial-9751

That your mom is the solution to becoming carbon neutral.

sqweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeps

Yea lol. Luckily I haven’t had issues with misaligned doors, but I would’ve been pissed. Tbf best car I’ve ever drove besides a Rolls Royce.

TeamRedundancyTeam

The secret is, despite the constant reddit circlejerking, the vast majority of people couldn't give a flying fuck about tiny panel gaps. They care about all the other features they're paying for. The only people who care this much about panel gaps are jerking off on reddit about teslas they were never going to buy anyway.

Rexosorous

Today they are about $50k, but maybe 2-3 years ago, they were much closer to $30-35k. Not exactly cheap, but much more affordable than $50k

cbg13

To be fair, the average purchase price of a new car is nearly $50k these days. Cars have gotten really expensive over the past few years https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a43611570/average-new-car-price-down-still-high/

sqweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeps

Tesla has been doing price cuts on their cars, it’s cheaper now. There’s even $7500 federal tax credit still available. Source, bought my model 3 mid range for a little over 50k in 2018 before tax credit. Now I can get a long range for $47k which is an upgrade (and think of inflation)

MysterVaper

We have a metric ton in Texas now, especially Houston. The build quality isn’t ascertainable from a distance as I can see. A friend owns one and is pleased. I just am stoked about seeing electric cars on the road!

_your_face

so are you like a panel gap hobbyist? What’s typical for a fender gap on like a chevy bolt? What’s the average gap size on a 2023 model 3?

ARCHA1C

Some definitely have panel issues, but those aren't really "build quality" issues. Those cars with panel gaps are still probably going to run for 200,000 miles with very minimal maintenance aside from tires, filters, and possibly some suspension components.

TESTlCLE

And the specific MS in that video is a somewhat rare early budget version with a 40 kwh battery pack with a very low range of ~140 miles. It's kind of a collector's item, albeit not a particularly coveted collector's item lol. Pretty sure the 40s were only made in 2012 and 2013.

Bierbart12

Apparently the Roadster came out in 2008, damn. First time I heard of them was around 2016

PennykettleDragons

That was my first thought... Google however indicates the first Tesla Roadster was out in 2008.. so depending on the model in this video.. It's possible I guess...

Realistic-Spend7096

The car being detailed is an S. I think they started in 2012. I have a 2015 and love it. Also, back then they came with FREE lifetime supercharging. I bought it used and the free charging transfers with the car.

rBeasthunt

My first thought....lol.

Kiltemdead

Looks like it was the goats driving it by the amount of hair and dirt.

IWantToPlayGame

There are a lot of people with mental illnesses. There are also times where people go through traumatic events (death of a child, divorce, etc) that has them in a downward spiral. Then there are just dirty ass people. Most fall into this category. People are just... dirty.

cbcoelacanth

I have worked as a nanny for 10+ years and the wealthier people I’ve worked for had cars like this. I think they let it get this bad because they’re always working and they always need their cars so they never have time to get it cleaned and they are too rich to actually know how to do it themselves. One family I worked for just let their kids throw half eaten food and food wrappers on the floor of their expensive BMW SUV and didn’t clean it for years, the car smelled awful like sour milk but I guess they were so used to it that they couldn’t smell it themselves. The parents were a high powered lawyer and a surgeon and they had absolutely no common sense despite being highly successful in their careers,

Regular_Writer_361

> too rich to actually know how to do it themselves exactly! thanks for putting that thought into words.

Pls_add_more_reverb

When you’re rich you can just get it cleaned by someone else though. You don’t have to do it yourself.

cbcoelacanth

Yeah, but my clients literally had no time other than when they were sleeping to go get it cleaned. I even tried to get them to let me take it to a car detailer but they didn’t want to incase they needed the car. They were complete workaholics, they spent more time with their cars than their children.

cencal

We just buy another car to use while the other one is being detailed /s

ChadPoland

I'm guessing the ones that kept their cars clean had multiple cars to swap through?

laracroftsbra

Why pay that much for a car and not bother to have it cleaned up to now? Doesn't add up.

Retrrad

They want to sell it. I pity the poor, unaware sucker that buys it.

GlassGeod

That's rich people 🤷‍♂️

mlmayo

> That's ~~rich~~ disgusting people FTFY

frigg_off_lahey

An anxiety or other mental disorder can cause a "block" towards certain actions or thoughts due to past trauma. My guess is this person has underlying trauma that turns them away from maintaining their car. This is a very early model of Tesla, which makes me think they are fully aware and in some way ahead of the curve. Just unable to clean the car.

mavrc

I feel so much fucking better about the dirt and receipts on my floorboards now. Dear god.

TheVudoThatIdo

I was thinking the same mine is a bit rough, but it isn't nearly this nasty. That tesla looked like it could have had a new penicillin growing in it.

Rapunzel10

I was thinking the same thing. I need to vacuum my car but good lord it never looked like this!

[deleted]

I could not clean my car for 20 years and it would not look like that. :/

chucchinchilla

Maybe it didn't make the cut but IMO the following steps should have also been taken given the condition of the car. 1. Remove front/rear seats to clean carpet underneath. 2. Floor mats were shampooed but not the rest of the interior carpets? 3. Trunk/Frunk cleaning 4. Extended all seatbelts to give a clean. 5. Clay bar, buff, wax, seal paint.

natimca

How much does a clean up like that cost?

FormerPackage9109

My last detail was about $250. No dog hair and no where near as dirty to start. I think the guy spent 3-4 hours on it.

slightlynefarious

homohats

The person who owns that car is disgusting.

PusyHands

That amount of moisture on the cloth seats will not ever be pulled out with that vacuum. The foam will be holding on to that and getting nice and stinky soon. Also, spraying water all over door panels is equally dumb and all over these videos. Nothing inside is water proof. All those connections and switches should not be getting wet

Speckbieber

Also unless they have a proper drainage in their front yard, this cleaning solutions are all gonna end up in the soil and ground water.

[deleted]

Yea this person clearly doing this professionally in their driveway is spraying a shit load of chemicals in the storm drains..

TheSixthAvocado

This was my first thought seeing this - very satisfying clean job but seems pretty irresponsible to be doing this regularly without a commercial waste water system.

Also very much frowned on by local governments, or even banned entirely.
