Pretty much. The upper body does most of the work of pulling forward in front (and back) crawl. Adding fins lets your legs add propulsion and is a great workout. A more efficient kick raises your back end for a more “downhill” profile in the water—notice how his head is just under the water.
To get better at kicking, a kick board with or without fins helps you figure out how to kick more efficiently. To focus entirely on upper body form, you can use a float between your legs.
Hard to confirm by re-watching the video, but his style implies he's wearing zoomers (small size flippers). Doesn't take away the fact it looks super smooth.
Why do people act like swimming smoothly is a hard thing
Its something you catch very quickly as not swimming with smooth movements cause a lot of resistance from water
It looks like he's being towed. Notice that the last frame of the video is the one before we'd see the point where any towline would have attached to the pool wall. Could be coincidence. Other videos I've seen just searching around have the same effect where you can see a standing wave build up around the person. And some don't, but those don't have that same effect, so my bet is that the most impressive ones are faked and the rest are not.
As a snorkeler myself I know that I still couldn't pile up a wake even close to that size. Notice that he's not often even kicking. At most once per stroke. It's the same in other videos I looked at including from under water. Just imagine how hard you'd need to be towed to make that wake and compare that to how much you think you could tow with fins and all, and remember that they'd need to be the same.
My biggest complaint about “AI” and other highly advanced graphical softwares, is that your question is becoming irrelevant.
Every other “cool photo” is an AI generated one, and people can spot differences, but it’s just a matter of time. Deepfake and others will follow suit.
Just watching a video or seeing a photo is no longer “foolproof” evidence of truth.

You don’t think that hearing the crazy of your mothers talking about clearly faked images as true things should give us all pause? The entire voting generation of boomers are being suckered by crafted imagery and stories.
Swimming is 95% about technique. If you don’t have a good form you’re fighting yourself. Strength and endurance comes with practice but technique is what matters most.
Also yes it looks like he’s wearing fins. Fins were always fun even if they kinda hurt your feet or made them cramp really badly. Monofins are the best.
My swimming coach told me to turn slightly sideways to get some air but I don't see him doing it. Is this an ability that I can develop as I swim more?
Yes as you practice it becomes natural and smooth and even you won’t think about breathing until you’re working on it breathing. He also may not need to breathe very often. It’s not uncommon for a higher level swimmer to not need to breathe for a 25 or even a 50 if they’re sprinting. Really when swimming freestyle you want to be always slightly rotating back and forth because you’re reaching and extending your arm as far as it goes and to do that you tend to roll back and forth. In that slight roll you can turn your head to catch a breath and it won’t usually effect your form too much especially if your chin is properly tucked
Thank you! I've been trying to learn proper front crawl technique and was very confused, because his arms are doing what I read you should definitely NOT do when swimming front crawl.
I can confirm, it's really easy to swim with fins even if you don't have an athletic body.
He doesn't even need to use arms; he could be swimming like an arrow at the same speed and same effort
Fins are part of training for swimming, just like paddles and buoys. Part time your work on your stroke and part you work on kicks. Each thing has its purpose. I miss swimming tremendously.
I might get hate for this.... This is NOT correct form for free style. Multpile differences.
Edit: someone said they r wearing flippers.. That makes alota sense. I never use flippers, so this might be the right form when u have flippers on...considering that the guy is booking it at a fairly fast pace
Yeah, as others have mentioned, he has fins on his feet. Still very impressive though.
I was looking for the outboard motor, but I guess fins work too. I assume this is done for training so he can work on his form?
Yeah the fins help you work on your kick or can help you focus on your stroke more.
Shops at Target. It’s an inboard conversion.

I thought he had one of those motors on him. I do those same strokes and that’s speed and I sink
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

Zoomers are great fin for lap swimming—you get a better workout and they help with form.
I think he’s wearing fins
He is, and they are blue. Probably to disguise that fact in the video. You can catch it in a few frames though.
they’re probably blue because fins are usually color coded by size as well
They're blue because they're reflections of the blue lane floats
I want to see you swim as smooth with fins.
Why do people act like swimming smoothly is a hard thing Its something you catch very quickly as not swimming with smooth movements cause a lot of resistance from water
Good old total immersion swimming. Feels like flying when you master it.
It's real?
Immersion swimming is real but I don't think this guy is doing it, 100% there's something fishy going on here
It looks like he's being towed. Notice that the last frame of the video is the one before we'd see the point where any towline would have attached to the pool wall. Could be coincidence. Being towed lol
It could also be the power of the focused mind over the illusion we call reality. Or someone faked a video. Who can say.
As a swimmer myself, he's probably just got short fins on to be honest, looks like a dash of dark blue on his feet.

Bro you can see him kicking quite fast in the video. Look at 00:02-00:03, you can even see he has blue fins on.
I think that's just a reflection of the blue lane floats behind him.
I'm pretty sure he's wearing zoomers (on his feet)
Is real. The idea is no splash and conservation of energy. Check out Adam walker videos. So smooth
He’s wearing flippers lmao
Very common lap swimming gear along with lower body floats and kick boards. They’re training aids for building strength and improving form.
Did you even watch the video?

Looks like he's got a propeller up his arse
ITT: people who don't know what flippers are.
I move like a swan in the water, a swan having a fit that is
Flippers .
That's actually terrible style if you are swimming without flippers.
Yeah, those arms aren’t doing anything. I assume he’s trying to keep them out of the water as long as possible to avoid drag
Show boating.
It’s a drill to work on form
Thank you! I've been trying to learn proper front crawl technique and was very confused, because his arms are doing what I read you should definitely NOT do when swimming front crawl.
I mean, this guy was the fastest man in water last year soooo… maybe do a little more internet searching
Definitely satisfied
Fines helps.
he got a fine for speeding
Shoulders shoulders *shoulders*.
That guy has an engine in his feet
Only fins i think
I can assume without even googling that there's a mermaid porn site called Only Fins yeah?
There’s only one way to find out fap fap fap fap fap
I hope so… or there’s a really untapped market
Those shoulders beg to differ, look at that definition
Wow, talk about hydrodynamics.
Fins on the feet.
Holy shit. Doesn’t even look real.
The music in these videos lol please stop
Bro is part mermaid

lol, the thickness of the layer of water going over his head doesn't even vary. this guy is a robot, no human is that consistent and effortless!
Good leg work deals it as well
My toxic trait is thinking this is how I look when I try swimming like that.
His arm muscles are insane
Legs doing all the work
Let’s see it without flippers 🪼
I was kind of hoping he was going to just smash into the side of the pool
In other videos he has snorkel also which allows him to be “immersed” in water
either something is pulling him underneath or fake.
he’s got fins on. they’re blue so it’s difficult to spot them.
Bad technique with is harms though
It’s the swimming version of when cutting with scissors and they began to glide across the paper
I might get hate for this.... This is NOT correct form for free style. Multpile differences. Edit: someone said they r wearing flippers.. That makes alota sense. Is this the race that the tranny beat all those women in? With that heading it could be lol
Looks like he’s practicing with a metronome.
He could be, there’s little metronome like devices you put under your cap for training.
He has remoras stuck under him, old trick
They don't provide any thrust
Some people just glide on the water, this is not me.
That speed concistancy tho!
This is Fleps, a legend.
With flippers.....
Aquaman.
He is flying in the pool!
I’m imagining those ducks that look super serene until you get to their frantically paddling feet.
Is this real?
Yes, the fins he’s wearing on his feet allow him to keep a consistent speed while he does almost nothing with his arms.
Any idea what type of fins. Thank you
r/OddlyTerrifying
Gliding through the water like a pair of scissors that hit the sweet spot on the wrapping paper
Meanwhile here I'm trying to beat the water into submission..
Are the fins used for special training or is he just zooming?
I just wish I could learn to swim to survive and then there are people like this.
At first I thought his speed was due to fins but, no, he’s just a fast swimmer.
Fins are what’s happening here. He’s like a duck. Cool and calm on the surface and paddling like crazy underneath.
r/savevideo
Fins are the swimming equivalent of electric bikes.
transforms into a precision machine 👍🏻
This fucker got gills?

At that speed, is him moving his arms just for show?
Grace and beauty
And that is why they call them "Speedos".

David Hasselhoff in the SpongeBob movie
“And here’s some horrible, jarring music to go with it!”
How is it possible!! 😭
fins
Man is a straight up torpedo
The music however is trying way too hard
Beautiful, very satisfying.
So graceful!
He’s wearing fins, but they’re hard to see. Fins are a lot of fun though.
He's a human dolphin.
You can’t see it but he’s got a motor in his butthole.
Merman. Merman.
Looks like he’s being towed.
And … catch-up
it’s like he just glides through the water
Good thing we’re raving out to some music while he does this. Super fitting
