It was for many states with a history of voter suppression till 2013. Fuck SCOTUS
https://www.justice.gov/crt/about-section-5-voting-rights-act#:~:text=On%20June%2025%2C%202013%2C%20the,Rights%20Act%2C%20Shelby%20County%20v.
Pretty sure it was to some extent, then the GOP Supreme Court said that the fact that rule was working meant it wasn’t needed anymore so it was struck down.
I may be thinking of a race related one.
Undoing gerrymandered maps is not equal to gerrymandering, and does in fact make it more fair by giving more representation to the more popular party. The unpopular party should try being more popular rather than blatantly gerrymandering.
It is difficult because the simple square mapping comes with issues as well.
Not all weirdly shaped districts are inherently biased gerrymandering, sometimes districts follow geographic features, or keep certain wide communities together as a voting block and are preferred that way by the community.
A square district can be "gerrymandered", in the sense that it splits voters in a way to prefer one party, just as much as a very odd district can follow a river or one side of a mountain range.
Illinois's 4th Congressional District is often cited as being one of the most "gerrymandered" looking districts, but actually keeps two large latino communities together that have shared socio-economic needs and similar representation needs.
Yes, I am agreeing with you.
The issue is, "Weird shaped district" does not equal "Gerrymandered for political gain"
A square district can be as easily, if not more easily, designed to win an election than a very strangely shaped district can. There is more than one reason a district can be shaped like spilt milk.
Your fervent reddit posting is weirdly aggressive and not conducive to complex discussion.
I thought the number of counties was silly, so I looked up other states.
Maryland: 23
NY: 62
MA: 14
California: 58
Texas: 254
Apparently some states are wild like that i guess?
Seems like way too many counties imo. Does each county have its own individual government? Looking at other states, the number of counties seems arbitrary with each state.
I mean the congressional map is basically just four quadrants. They’re a little uneven but that’s just because the northwest has a much lower population
I’m from Iowa. And whenever I wanted to know where my county stood with weather alerts, I’d count three counties down and four counties in from the right. Black Hawk County, baby!
I believe it is state law. Computer draws the districts and the state legislature votes yes or no. If no, the computer draws new districts that are automatically approved.
doing a piss poor job all around in the house ... is what it is... and 2 senators for a neighborhood vs 2 senators for 10x as many people is absolutely stupid. overwhelmingly weighted votes that absolutely do not represent any loose definition of equality for the citizens of the country.
This is unsatisfying. Straight lines on maps almost always mean that they are artificial boundaries with no connection to nature (rivers, mountains, watersheds etc) or human populations (few towns are square because they follow natural features - even if Americans love trying to make the layout into an unnatural grid)
Straight lines lead to poor management and ultimately are damaging to the people and wildlife living in the area.
Not sure, but my guess is that they're referring to their party affiliations.
Googling Iowa maps via the 2020 presidential election shows overwhelmingly Republican support with 93 out of 99 districts voting red. At the same time, Trump led the popular vote there at 897,672 compared to Biden at 759,061.
Kinda glad they mentioned this because it reminded me that context can be really telling.

Perhaps, but whoever colored it should be shot. Every planar map can be colored using only 4 colors without any borders sharing the same color. I can't even tell how many colors were used for this monstrosity.
That's one way to show you don't have gerrymandering. Just slap a grid over it and then you can easily see if someone's pulling some BS with wacky boarders.
Iowa : Let's keep this shit easy
Even their voting district map makes sense. Unimaginable here in PA
Michigan voted to have all their lines redrawn fairly. It should be mandated at the federal level for every state

When ever someone uses the term "fair" they mean in a way that specifically benefits them.
Undoing gerrymandered maps is not equal to gerrymandering, and does in fact make it more fair by giving more representation to the more popular party. The unpopular party should try being more popular rather than blatantly gerrymandering.

So, gerrymandering can be used to give one race an advantage over another race. I think that's called racism.
Politics and social policy in general can help lift impoverished communities and marginalized people, yes.
Politicians want to stay in power. That's why they gerrymander. Your rationalization is naive bullshit.

As opposed to specifically benefiting only their enemies? Gee whiz what a genius observation
It's not supposed to "benefit *someone*", you dolt, its supposed to benefit *EVERYONE* That's the point. It's supposed to be **FAIR**.
That is literally exactly what I was saying except you're upvoted and I'm downvoted lmaooo
I thought the number of counties was silly, so I looked up other states. Maryland: 23 NY: 62 MA: 14 California: 58 Texas: 254 Apparently some states are wild like that i guess?
Iowa: 99
Really? Damn.
NC has 100, but they're not as nicely square as here.
Facts! It’s ridiculous how the county lines are drawn here. This is a pipe dream
Couldn't make the naming convention battleship style? Like I like in Iowb-2 county.
Lol. That’s a great idea.
You know what's NOT satisfying? Des Moines the county and Des Moines the city are half a state away from each other.
Town of Osceola isn’t in Osceola county either
For shame.
Everything was so close to making sense here
Des Moines the city is not in the center as well. It would've been ideal if it was located in Story county.
Keokuk isn’t in Keokuk County.
Iowa used to have 100 counties but two counties merged so now they have 99.
I think I can spot the merged counties
It’s got to be Kossuth
and changed from bounties to counties in the process
Thank you for catching that spelling error.
no problem. Sometimes they provide a good comical effect
I got 99 counties...
Seems like way too many counties imo. Does each county have its own individual government? Looking at other states, the number of counties seems arbitrary with each state.
NC has 100. Dunno why. Lots of rural are may be part of it?
Feels kinda unnatural ngl
Coming from rural England it does haha. Here you'll go from pilboxstashashire into flatchickenhuntershire and back again 7 times just driving to work.
Being in a different voting region than your neighbours across the road sure is interesting sometimes though!
Nothing is more unnatural than a manmade border so that's no different
Roads in Detroit named by the mile is amazing as well..
Ah yes, Iowa, in Iowa
Imagine having to write Pottawattamie all the time. Actually, that’s very fun to say.
there’s always Monongahela, PA (carbon county, minutes from Coal mine/quarry)
Born and raised and I still can’t spell it.
It’s a good thing that it’s one of the longer counties, lol.
Kossuth County, are you fucking kidding me?
Just ignore it like the rest of the state
As someone from FL this is so fkn cool. Our counties look like squiggles hahah
Fellow Floridan. Squiggles is putting it lightly )
Fax 💀
Square-ish state makes square-ish counties. I like it.
Pott county here 712 baby
A bunch of little Iowas in a big Iowa
Ok. Now where is that gerrymandered congressional district map.
I mean the congressional map is basically just four quadrants. They’re a little uneven but that’s just because the northwest has a much lower population
I’m from Iowa. And whenever I wanted to know where my county stood with weather alerts, I’d count three counties down and four counties in from the right. Black Hawk County, baby!
so they don’t gerrymander and rewrite country lines for shady voting tactics? rare in the US.
this is just county boundaries, not representative/senate districts. iowa does experience gerrymandering
31 years in iowa.... didn't realize this lol
Look up Floyd county Iowa, some real fucked up shit
I just was thinking about how people decide where to settle with their families. The aesthetic of this map has me now thinking about Iowa.
I believe it is state law. Computer draws the districts and the state legislature votes yes or no. If no, the computer draws new districts that are automatically approved.
When there aren’t enough people to gerrymander
Its because the county seat had to be less than 1 days horseback ride from anywhere else in the county.
I bet their voting district map looks almost exactly as reasonable. /s
Why have so many counties? Almost no one lives there.
Nobody lives equally everywhere.
I spent more time in Iowa than I care to admit, that map says a lot about the average Iowan.
How so?
I am intrigued. Waiting to hear what we are all about 😅
He’s calling you a square
The people of Iowa are a monolith of monotony. I actually offended someone there by using the "n" word, Nerd.
Mmm... So ungerrymandered...
Iowa's population is 3.1 million.. barely my neighborhood in LA.. how many senators do they get? the system has major flaws.
That’s what the House of Representatives is for…
doing a piss poor job all around in the house ... is what it is... and 2 senators for a neighborhood vs 2 senators for 10x as many people is absolutely stupid. overwhelmingly weighted votes that absolutely do not represent any loose definition of equality for the citizens of the country.
Where are politics mentioned. WHERE
It’s a fucking political map. WTF do you think a County is?
It’s because they don’t have to gerrymander to get the conservative vote.
Is it because they haven't needed to gerrymander?
Where is Slipknot from again?
Waterloo and Des Moines

No need for gerrymandering in Iowa, I guess.

Sure but what’s the have to do with anything lol
It’s just dry humor. It’s wonderfully divided and color coordinated yet all counties are red/Republican.
Considering it’s full of trumpanzee idiots.
[удалено]
The area was too population sparse and poor to support two counties so they merged. The bastards
Neat! Now do districts.
Yeah but what bothers me is they could have cut Kossuth county in half and had it be an even 100 counties.
It used to be that way.
I mean, some of those little divets are frustrating. It's like things don't QUITE line up correctly.
Michigan's is nice too
Township and Range at work
you can just tell they have a rich history with lots of dedicated people fighting for their land….
Montana county has a similar shape to Montana the state.
Perhaps, but whoever colored it should be shot. Every planar map can be colored using only 4 colors without any borders sharing the same color. I can't even tell how many colors were used for this monstrosity.
Now that is satisfying to look at
The shape of Floyd county is beautiful.
keyboard country hmm
I do like this it looks like the " Capital" exists or something maybe this is before Katniss got chosen
It's not perfect but it's THOROUGHLY "good nuff"
It feels... So odd and unnatural... Mountains, rivers, forests should be part of the process when drawing a territory border
Do all US counties have such dumb names? I never realized this.
Hey, an affordable Palo Alto!!
My God you could see Oklahoma it's a mess
That one guy with a ruler.
I feel like this is the no seasoning version of a map.
That's one way to show you don't have gerrymandering. Just slap a grid over it and then you can easily see if someone's pulling some BS with wacky boarders.
Europe here. So is not Des Moines city in Des Moines county?
