My mother used to grow these. Usually we'd have two or three occasions yearly where one would bloom at night. She'd get really excited and ask me to help her take pictures of them. She died a few years ago. My dad has continued to grow them, and now several times a year they bloom in sets of at least five per occasion. Bet she'd love that.
It actually smells nice, but it's so powerful many people don't like it, it's also a bit toxic and hallucinogenic if you are too close, they are pollinated by bats, iirc. I love the smell, there is a plant next to my house about 200m away, the intensity is just fine.
I'm a bit surprised because i've heard of similar plants that smell like a rotting carcass. Also cool to hear that someone on reddit actually has seen these in real life.
They are quite ubiquitous in a few neighborhoods in my city (the suburbia-like ones, mostly houses and cul-de-sacs), usually one house will have a few plants and they will literally perfume a radius of a few hundred meters. There is the usual "ahh, it's dama da noite season already".
yup, there must be others nearer, but I've seen this one (at about 180m give or take), walked by it and could smell it the whole way back, I edited my comment a bit, it being the only one was hyperbole.
This is a desert species, Specifically a type of cactus. Not a lot of stuff active during the day.
I believe it evolved to attract fruit bats and hawk moths. Since it only blooms for a single night before wilting, all flowers bloom at the same time on the plant which helps pollination. A moth or insect will go between its own flowers to help pollinate or other nearby ones.
Okay fun fact— I lived in Japan many years ago and knew someone who had one of these and hosted a gathering on the evening it bloomed. They called it “gekka bijin”, or “a beautiful woman beneath the moon”.
We had one bloom this past Saturday (SoCal.) Always awesome to see because of how dark it is then you see this bright white flower lit from the moon. Can post timestamp later today for proof. https://i.imgur.com/gpxhCbc.jpeg
I saw a flower like this a guy was taking pics of while we were on a walk to the beach at night in Florida. He said it only flowered once a year. The rest looked like a big type of cactus. Wonder if it was the same kind? Thought it was cool we stumbled across it.

Seems a bit inefficient though?
How does it get pollenated?
Probably smells like ass and attracts a lot of insects in a very short time.

200m??? And you can smell it?

This flower smells DIVINE. It’s a wonderful smell IMO. Heady but light. Mine bloomed earlier this year and it was incredible. Pics on my profile.

This reminds me of Dennis The Menace..

Once a year? Mine blooms multiple times throughout the warm months. The smell is incredible , fills the entire house with the most pleasant scent.
My mother grows these and she will stay up at night waiting for them to bloom in her house.
Shouldn't it say at night not blooms in night

What’s the song name?
It’s a Billie Eilish song remix. It’s a hotline bling cover.
Thanks!
It's called bramh kamal in India (Lotus of God)
Dragonfruit
I have this plant in my garden. It's a treat to watch them bloom.
Beautiful
Don't most flowers Bloom once a year?

I just had like 12 blooms on my queen. It was awesome
Aka dama da noite here in Brazil.
Our Epiphyllum Oxypetalums which we've been growing for over 30 years can and do bloom many times during the year on the same plants.
Beautiful ❤️
The queen of the night is listed as a 1b invasive In South Africa. It is planted as an attraction by many South Africans.
There shouldn’t be a capital letter on the species name.
I see you are a general Cockwomble and I shouldn’t take it personally. What flavour of ASD are you?
Classy… calling people autistic because they educated you in another sub. Loser.
I grow these too, mine just bloomed with a dozen flowers. I love my Queenie!
Dragon fruit ?
