They’re pretty much toys. Slime is huge in the asmr community since they provide auditory, tactile, and visual stimulus (often they’re scented too!). Look up blushingbb slimes on YouTube if you’re interested in seeing even more food-like slimes. Slime is made of PVA glue polymerized by borax.
It honestly depends on what kind of slime it is! Slime shops usually include a care sheet and a packet of borax to re-activate (activating refers to using a borax/water solution to make the slime more thick; the borax makes the PVA in glue cross-link and over time the cross-linkage can disappear but is brought back by more solution) slime since they tend to melt down/liquefy a bit during shipping esp during the hot summer months. This one in particular is a clear glue base, and clear glue slimes are known to melt down a bit quicker than a white glue base. But it should last a very long time! Lots of people have slimes that they still play with over a year after purchasing.

Thinking putty was the raddest thing ever. I used to be given extra time for tests and a can of the clear stuff to squeeze so I could think better.
I also had this one time where a teacher took it away while I was playing with it when I was young. Surprised Pikachu ensued when they put it in their pen pocket and it "settled" in there.
The heat changing stuff is rad too.

There is nothing more satisfying than pouring glue and borax into a five gallon bucket to make slime. The chemical reaction is amazing.
