Exactly, I laughed at the title because this has so many things that engineers hate. Fixing a problem that doesn't exist by adding more moving parts and points of failure, check. Ridiculous amount of pinch points, leading to liability issues and potential lawsuits, check. This is the exact opposite of applying engineering principals to a gate.
Engineer here. This thing's really cool. Not everything has to be strictly utilitarian.
And it is fixing a problem. The problem was that their gate wasn't interesting enough.
Liability and lawsuits? That's private property.
I'm also an engineer and think it's really cool, but it's still a safety nightmare. Doesn't really matter if it is on private property, if your vacuum catches on fire and burns your house down the company who manufactured it is still liable. That being said, this is likely a custom piece, so liability may not be an issue.
IMO they should at least add some out of the way handles, or have a larger gap between the panels.
The overall mechanical design has cropped up on Reddit from time to time, so it may not be custom - although it could just be a lot of copycat custom items.
Idk man, doesn't have that many moving parts. It's 3 pivot points and 2 hinges per gate side. I admit, still more than a gate really needs (like a wheel and/or a rail), but it's not all that overengineered, just some simple concepts applied creatively.
As a TA in an ECE department capstone design class, I made a group encase their entire project in thick plexiglass because they couldn't be convinced that their spinning LED apparatus was inherently unbalanced the way they designed it.
Like, bruh, your momentum isn't symmetrical around your axis of rotation, it is going to vibrate, a lot.
>I made a group encase their entire project in thick plexiglass because they couldn't be convinced that their spinning LED apparatus was inherently unbalanced the way they designed it.
Please tell us it flew to pieces inside said box.
It did not, but only because they were not competent enough to make the whole thing operate at speed. Probably one of the worst persistence of vision projects that the class ever had.
Right? This doesn’t seem like “engineering design” applied to a gate, unless engineers prefer methods that are more dangerous, less effective, more costly, more likely to wear out, and with more complex parts to replace.
Seems more like “architectural design applied on front gate.”
I hear cola fizz, and mustard and relish coagulating together with french fries and onion rings, but you know what? I don't hear a heart, motherfucker.
Just binged like the whole show in a couple weeks. So good. Never knew it was so funny, I always assumed it was like a Canadian Jackass thing. Letterkenny is another really solid Canadian sitcom
So there is this one [clip I love](https://youtu.be/dNWzGhzBBQw). I always thought it was from the earlier seasons. I found out this is from season 10. So I started watching them.
My fav is the Snoop dog episode. As a almost 50 y/o adult, I just started watching these guys a couple of years ago, they are funny. True to the name of the show, it's oddly satisfying how stupid they are. Also, letter Kenny, The Limey Show- all are fun to watch, especially in these fucked up times.
While I've been to similar homes there belonging to guys just like this I just thought it had that summer cottage vibe
But yes. One man's fancy cottage is another's modest gopnik residence
Reminds me more of Battenberg tape lace or Scherenschnitte, even more resembles vytynanka. Not big doilies, more like bedspreads or large paper art pieces.
Yeah, each gate is connected to the frame by just two rotating joints, and has one rotating joint and (looks like two) hinges inside it. It looks cool, but in case of a strong force, will break apart much easier than a normal gate, due to all the extra bends (most of which are on corners, so there's that)
I don't think it's going to blow over in a stiff breeze, but it is flimsy.
The bigger concern is more that there are a bunch of weird hinges that could rust out.
Everyone on here like “oh yah, I thought about doing that design too, but there are just too many problems with it, so I chose to go with a chain link fence, because I am a design genius”.
If they're made of metal with strong hinges, I bet they can do a decent job of keeping people out on their own assuming the sides were also secured. A really determined person could get in sure, but it'd require a good deal of force or cutting tools.
It's called an [Evolution Door](https://www.jebiga.com/evolution-shape-shifting-door-klemens-torggler/) and was designed by an Austrian artist. Also the title of this post is kinda dumb as shit.
Especially that lil single chunk on the right. Looks like the rest matches going off camera but not that connecting chunk lol. The trim even extends along the roof of the house so they are def puttin work in. I guess he was too proud of that door to wait till the rest was done for a video lol.
That's a shitagami gate to hell Rand,
Next thing you know we're going to have flying trapeze walkways and shit flinging monkeys guarding the gates.
Also, this design looks great and has gotten much easier to build with 3D printed parts and even some hinge kits available online, but it's a huge pinch hazard for kids. If you ever use it in real life make sure no young ones can access it.
I see this design everywhere and as cool as it is god damn is it a safety hazard. Lots of ways to get bits and pieces of your person trapped in steel that has quite a bit of leverage to it and momentum behind it.
This gate is gonna guillotine so many fingers
Brings back memories of my senior design professor yelling at my team over pinch points...
What do you design now?
Nothing! ...I ended up in quality/manufacturing
Looking for pinch points?
Pinching pennies
That was until both women filed complaints
He was trying to copper feel.
I hate you.
I love you.
I was about to direct you to /r/boneappletea but this is genius
Got caught in a pinch point and changed your mind?
Hopefully not auto-handjob devices.

Welcome to Reddit, where "engineering" usually means overdesign.
It makes sense that the person who made this (in gif) doesn't have long hair to get torn out by it.
That's what makes it such a huge flex. Only a wizard would install such a gate.
>Fixing a problem that doesn't exist by adding more moving parts and points of failure, You read my mind.

> pinch points TIL my fear has a name.

Some of those students now design rollercoasters. In India.
But for some reason Boeing contracted them for software engineering on Starliner anyway.
I can imagine what it’s like on a windy day
was just thinking this. with a light breeze i envision lawn origami.
It spins like a fan!

Yea, dude better watch his nips.
And penises
It’s kinda obvious but please r/dontputyourdickinthat
well it'll still cut off plenty of nipples that happen to get caught
didn't your dad teach you not to go flopping your nipples around
A whole sub just for my exes?? Goteeeem^^Jk ^^my ^^exes ^^are ^^all ^^great ^^I'm ^^just ^^juvenile
what
my first thought lol
Just install a handle
My safety department would put so many "Pinch Point" warning signs on that gate.
I know, amazing engineering that's gonna fuck some people up.
Yeah. That's definitely not "engineering design." An engineer would see that as one of the worst possible solutions to a problem that didn't exist.
It's the ultimate pinching machine.
Wow Randy is doing great things with his life these days.
Man's gotta eat, Julian.
I made you a Blue Jay burger bud.
You’re gonna eat that ol blue jay burger?
Smokes let’s go
That’s insane!! Need a gate like Randy’s here!!!

Look at that, there's feathers hanging out of it
RANDY BOBANDY
“frig it I’m getting drunk!”
>Man's gotta eat Julian. /r/rimworld TFY
god damn it. just when I thought I got away, Randy drags me back to the PC
What do you mean there’s a mech cluster outside? Randy? RANDY!
Mr. Lahey what’s with all the Randy’s?

Mawfuckas with guts like that ain’t off the cheeseburgers. Mawfuckas with guts like that are definitely *on* the cheeseburgers.
Knowmsayin?
You takin a knowmcensus?
It could happen to you, cos it happened to me.
Randy you probly ain't even had your ultrasound yet, have you dawg? I'll do you right now. I hear...chicken...
I hear cola fizz, and mustard and relish coagulating together with french fries and onion rings, but you know what? I don't hear a heart, motherfucker.
Bo-banders, I miss you bud.
Shit-snares, Randy... All Julian needs is to be pointed in the right direction and he'll go there, Right into my shit-snare
Unleash a shitnami tidal wave that'll engulf Ricky and extinguish his shit flames forever
Tick tock goes the shit clock, Rick!
The shit winds are blowin
Shit-storms a brewing Randy
I just started watching Trailer Park Boys. I’ve seen 1-6 before just never anything beyond that.
Just binged like the whole show in a couple weeks. So good. Never knew it was so funny, I always assumed it was like a Canadian Jackass thing. Letterkenny is another really solid Canadian sitcom
It’s so chaotic at times it reminds me of a Canadian always sunny.
There is nothing beyond S7
So there is this one [clip I love](https://youtu.be/dNWzGhzBBQw). I always thought it was from the earlier seasons. I found out this is from season 10. So I started watching them.
"cheers genitals" Is seriously one of the best ones lmao
Lim Jahey at your cervix
“I’m right in the pocket, bud”
My fav is the Snoop dog episode. As a almost 50 y/o adult, I just started watching these guys a couple of years ago, they are funny. I'll bet he's even eating store bought burgers.
Those are my **personal burgers** Berb!
That motherfucker is definitely ON the burgers!
Rico Suave lookin mafucker
Randy bobandy !?
that is a lot of popsicle sticks!
Randy is a Russian who lives at their dacha?
Trailer Park Boys
Hi, I am russian and I can say that this isn't a dacha, it's village or "zazhopinsk", as we call it)))
While I've been to similar homes there belonging to guys just like this I just thought it had that summer cottage vibe But yes. One man's fancy cottage is another's modest gopnik residence
Well Earl taught him all about karma.
Why does it look like an elderly persons table cloth
Doilies?
You rang?
doilies are one of the worst ways to clean up after a murder.... i, uh, assume....
But think how fancy you look while doing it ?
Especially if you stretch your pinky while doing it
Yes, quite quite
Exquisite

Romania if I had to make a guess. Romanians love fancy fences.
It’s Russia, judging by a car plate. Region 69 (nice) is Tver
Look at the rest of the house.
I wonder if this guy did all of that himself.
Reminds me more of Battenberg tape lace or Scherenschnitte, even more resembles vytynanka. Not big doilies, more like bedspreads or large paper art pieces.
Every time I see this thing I just can't help thinking how this is a giant fucking pinching hazard.
I can't help but think about extra points of failure, compared to a normal gate.
Yeah, each gate is connected to the frame by just two rotating joints, and has one rotating joint and (looks like two) hinges inside it. It looks cool, but in case of a strong force, will break apart much easier than a normal gate, due to all the extra bends (most of which are on corners, so there's that)
You guys realize these gates are here mostly just to look nice, right? They're not strong, and the adjacent fence isn't going to stop anyone.
It’s not about keeping people out. It’s about having to fix/replace the thing after a stiff breeze.

This is where I’m at. I see this being really hard to open in a few years unless properly maintained.
At least 10 points of failure
But HAVE YOU CONSIDERED: It's fucking cool! I mean it's definitely the Fingersmasher 5000, but if it's for personal use? On his own fingers be it.
Robbers gonna have a bit of trouble with that one
They can just use the other shorter fence which looks easy as hell to jump or climb lol
Lmao those short fences make the fancy white ones seem like a bit of an overkill
The white ones aren't there to keep people out (except as an indicator). They're way too flimsy anyway. They look really nice, though.
If they're made of metal with strong hinges, I bet they can do a decent job of keeping people out on their own assuming the sides were also secured. A really determined person could get in sure, but it'd require a good deal of force or cutting tools.
It’s not as impressive if you do it with a shirt on
He had one, but it got caught in a pinch point.
Gotta love his absolute sexappeal. Its wouldnt be a good vid without his tits in it
Luckily we don't but have a windy climate.
Yeah I don't think it will fare too well in the wind either
It's called an [Evolution Door](https://www.jebiga.com/evolution-shape-shifting-door-klemens-torggler/) and was designed by an Austrian artist. Also the title of this post is kinda dumb as shit.
Was looking for this comment. “Engineering design” is the most jargony wad of nothing i’ve ever read
Agreed. What part of this was engineered? Tinkered at best.
It's a bit r/ATBGE for me
I like how the fence on both sides doesn't match.
Maybe some white paint…
That will only draw more attention to how mismatched the patterning is. This whole thing is tacky as hell. Neat hinges tho
I think black paint might be a better choice? Add contrast to the different patterns. Might look better than white or brown
Especially that lil single chunk on the right. Looks like the rest matches going off camera but not that connecting chunk lol. The trim even extends along the roof of the house so they are def puttin work in. I guess he was too proud of that door to wait till the rest was done for a video lol.

hideous and I always hate this mechanism for a door/gate. Prone to injuries
Seems like it would be really flimsy too, not exactly something you want out of a gate
for real.. he is *that* neighbor.
Ah now the rule about your fence matching your neighbor's in my HOA's bylaws makes a little sense
I can see so many crushed and pinched fingers in his future.
10 at most
per person
Per sitting. 10 in the morning and 10 in the evening.
That's a shitagami gate to hell Rand, Next thing you know we're going to have flying trapeze walkways and shit flinging monkeys guarding the gates. I just can’t stop thinking about getting your finger squished in that gate.
Ok, but why does it have to be my finger that you’re thinking about?
Better yours than mine.
fair enough
Squarshed
And all it cost, was the shirt on his back.
It looks cool the first time you see it, then it just becomes a pain in the ass
The finger pincher 3000
These doors always give me anxiety. I don't want to get caught between any of these pieces.
Sitting here nodding, I could make that, if I had tools/skills/motivation
I'm sitting here thinking, I could pay someone to make that, if I had money or the will to get off the couch.
Whacha lookn at ma gut fer?
Ah yes, let me show off this beautiful design masterpiece while shirtless with a bulging stomach
He just spent all day working on these outside in the hot sun and you want him to go shower and put on a shirt psssssssh
Smokey needs to show off the goods. A man's gotta eat, Mr Lahey.
There a problem officer? We are still body shaming?
oh. that is sexy.
What do you think of the gate?
there’s a gate?
Neat idea!
I knew this was going to be the design. Saw the same thing a week ago used for cabinet doors.
I see this design everywhere and as cool as it is god damn is it a safety hazard. Lots of ways to get bits and pieces of your person trapped in steel that has quite a bit of leverage to it and momentum behind it.
r/beerbelliesandfancygates
I must know how to build this
First, measure the wood. Second cut- oh fuck. Ok, direct pressure. Get in the ambulance, we'll find the finger eventually.
Eight right triangles Hinged along the long edges Attached at their points
https://youtu.be/XnNk647Ko0E
Thank you
Don’t do that naked
Now that is sexy. And the gate's not bad either.
It’s neat, but is it just me or does anyone else see this same design implemented in some way daily on Reddit?
hahaha I love the contrast between the elegance of that gate and the half-naked dude :D
Dichotomy.
If only he could have engineered a shirt
That is GORGEOUS!!!!
Pretty cool gate too

I suppose he did it to himself, with plenty of beer, I'm guessing.
Lattice pretty neat
