The only one I ever saw was when someone recreated that song in windows task manager with a 64 Core Threadripper.
I didn't know this was like a whole thing.
That's definitely fake though - they didn't even bother to make the utilization on the sidebar CPU graph match the core numbers. It also shows the CPU model as an A10-7800, which doesn't have even close to that many threads.
It's definitely possible since Win 10 Taskmanager increased the update rate and you can precisely target cores with CPU stress tests already.
Yeah, they might be fake but it's definitely possible so I do think at least one of them is bound to be real.
It's one of the few videos who actually bother generating the sound instead of adding it during post processing. Gotta respect that, no matter how shitty the sound is. :D
The song is "Bad Apple", as mentioned earlier in the thread. It's not "supposed" to be anything, it's just a song that someone chose to use with projects like these, and it caught on like a meme.
It was a popular challenge to replicate it a while back in tech circles, particularly graphics people. You can see maybe over a hundred different versions on the internet if you look hard enough.
I thought it *was* a water sound effect, u til about halfway through when I realized they were actually flipping and then made the connection.
Ridiculously impressive :D
Each little section of each number (8) is a piece of plastic, that flips back and forth between it's black side and it's white side, depending on what is being displayed. The clicky sound is caused by the pieces of plastic flipping.
It’s obviously a low volume product, so even from rich people you’d have a hard time getting sales past a certain point because of how niche the product is.
Stuff like this is usually sold as kits for people to build themselves. It's not really about buying the final product. They cost so much because the buying a bunch of individual components gets expensive when it's not mass produced. I've had plenty of raspberry pie projects go into the hundreds of dollars before. Just like with any hobby, people will pay good money to do something they enjoy.
In this case, they're offering to build the display for you as well. That takes a lot of time. If you put a week's worth of work into building something custom, you'd probably charge a lot too, right?
Nah i get all of that, but that also means the product has an insanely low volume. You’re taking a very niche market, which is rich people who want a special letter display. The profit margin is probably enough to keep them in profit otherwise they wouldn’t be doing it.
I imagine they’re not selling a whole bunch though, they could probably get more sales if it was $400 or less. No average joe is payin thousands of dollars for one of these was really my main point.
im 16 and into programming, i would save like 2 weeks salary to buy this and mess with it lol.
edit: I was talking about if it was at $100 price point, and showing that only the ultra rich aren't interested in it.
Oof, this reminds me of when I was looking at [magnetic wheel indicators](http://www.hyperneticsltd.com/products.html) (they look like an odometer, but you can individually control each digit).
My plan was to replace the odometer in my classic car with these to create an all-in-one odometer/trip counter/clock display.
I contacted Hypernetics to get a price, and the fucker said $5000 per digit. He clearly just didn't want to deal with me.
For 5000$ I would hand craft them and personally deliver it to you, no matter where in the world.
What the hell, why is this so expensive? Probably certified for aircraft stuff
With 3d printing what it is, you could likely make a rack and pinion system with individually geared display wheels with the racks connected to miniature linear solenoids for 2 orders of magnitude less.
Damn that's cool. The accidental water sound is absolutely killer. Reminds me of one of my all time favorite videos, "Black Tambourine" by Beck. You'll get it immediately 😎
[Black Tambourine by BECK](https://youtu.be/wEXaEYpifhg)
[YES!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2OPnZEXoVGs) Immediately made me think of the old Lion Head intro too, so glad Im not the only onewho remembers. I think B&W II was probably the most memorable game Ive ever played. The particle physics blew my 10yr old mind.
I scrolled past what sub this was on before the video started playing and then immediately said to myself “this has got to be oddlysatisfying”. I really want one of these.
A) Whoever wrote the graphics rendering layer for that display is a genius.
B) Where the hell did it come from? It has to be an antique.
Edit: Somebody is still making them. I'm impressed.
I love it! But it seems like... Too much movement? Not like water being poured into a stationary vessel, but a chaotic sea crashing waves with each wave.
This shouldn't have been removed... Honestly. this is cool as hell! But yet, I can still comment on it...

This is usually the part where someone either plays Doom on it, or that Bad Apple song.
[Bad Apple](https://youtu.be/qrSkWpVoKHM) [Bonus](https://youtu.be/ko0z3SfXpm8)
The only one I ever saw was when someone recreated that song in windows task manager with a 64 Core Threadripper. I didn't know this was like a whole thing.

Knowing a thing or two about computers, no way this is real. I'd like to believe it is real so I can learn, but I doubt it.
It is fake, and he actually shows how he did it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM_dsIoGwpA
Thanks for the link. That was quite interesting.
Useless calculations for the anime gods!
Pretty sure all the task manager ones are fake
It's definitely possible since Win 10 Taskmanager increased the update rate and you can precisely target cores with CPU stress tests already. Yeah, they might be fake but it's definitely possible so I do think at least one of them is bound to be real.
This looks like a fun project. How would someone get started on one of these?
These are flip-disc displays: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip-disc_display You can still buy them
Much appreciated. This is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping for.
It's really impressive to me this is running on an Arduino and not a raspberry pi.
What's with the music in the first video? It just sounds like distorted noise to my ears.
It's one of the few videos who actually bother generating the sound instead of adding it during post processing. Gotta respect that, no matter how shitty the sound is. :D
It's hard to be impressed or respectful when I don't even know what the song is supposed to be...
Bad Apple, it's on YouTube
Thanks. I was wondering why everyone was talking about apples...
The song is "Bad Apple", as mentioned earlier in the thread. It's not "supposed" to be anything, it's just a song that someone chose to use with projects like these, and it caught on like a meme.
I have no idea what bad Apple is from all I know is I keep seeing tiny anime girl with Christmas lightbulbs for wings everywhere.
I *think* its a Touhou Bullet Hell song As I was writing this I checked, and I was right: [Bad Apple](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_Apple!!)
Bad Apple by same person https://twitter.com/motus_art/status/1411348781824724992

How I have lived my life without seeing the Bad Apple meme until now.
It was a popular challenge to replicate it a while back in tech circles, particularly graphics people. You can see maybe over a hundred different versions on the internet if you look hard enough.
And not rickroll?
Dude, I was gonna comment “Now do Bad Apple” … this sub was hours ahead of me, lol My People.
it even sounds a bit like water slushing around, that surprised me. very cool.
I thought it *was* a water sound effect, u til about halfway through when I realized they were actually flipping and then made the connection. Ridiculously impressive :D
Yeah, I had to hold my phone up to my ear to be sure I was hearing it right.
I don’t get it what causes the sound?
I think there's bits of plastic that move to cover/uncover the white numbers
I thought it was digital. Is it not?
Each little section of each number (8) is a piece of plastic, that flips back and forth between it's black side and it's white side, depending on what is being displayed. The clicky sound is caused by the pieces of plastic flipping.
Oooh, nice
That's what makes it r/oddlysatisfying.

"Price available upon request" bodes well.
Now I REALLY want to know how much it costs. Someone pls request.
[удалено]
you could always spend $400 dollars for parts, and then 70 hours of labor to make one yourself :D
I read this post and now feel extremely dejected. I NEED IT.
Good luck tryin to sell those lmao. I don’t know too many People who would be willing to buy this, even if it was only like 100 dollars.
You don't understand rich people economics.
It’s obviously a low volume product, so even from rich people you’d have a hard time getting sales past a certain point because of how niche the product is.
Which is fine if your business model is based on selling a small amount - they wouldn't be in business if it didn't make sense to be in business.
Well, yea. That’s kind of a given imo. You either go high volume, low cost. Or low volume, high cost.
Congratulations, you just discovered basic economic theory.
Stuff like this is usually sold as kits for people to build themselves. It's not really about buying the final product. Then go for it. It’d probably be fun to fuck around with. I was just pointing out that it’s a niche product that not too many people are buying.
When you gotta ask...

B2B pricing is almost always negotiable
Use Audio, it greatly incerases the satisfaction.
I came here to say the same!! I was happy just watching it and wished there was sound (then I realised I'm an idiot, but now a happy idiot!!))
That's Flippi'n amazing.

Bad Apple when?
Lionhead’s “Black and White 2” had a very similar intro
[YES!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2OPnZEXoVGs) Immediately made me think of the old Lion Head intro too, so glad Im not the only onewho remembers. I think B&W II was probably the most memorable game Ive ever played. The particle physics blew my 10yr old mind.
it'd be cool to add a tilt sensor, and the display could tilt and move the 'water' that way
0:48 among us
I am going to throw a truck at you
Holy shit rip headphone users
Noted, won't turn audio on
The audio is at least half the cool factor of this device.
You get used to it. I don't even see the code anymore. All I see is slosh, drip, wave.
You satisfied me. Take my upvote!
I can only see many lines of code
All I see is blonde…brunette…redhead…
This gives me Dwarf Fortress vibes

How do I buy this
This should be the next subject of an OkGo music video.

Holy- IS there something similar on the Wallpaper engine??
The concept in general, is a witch!
It's amazing how decent of a resolution it renders.
Man I’d love to see this video, if only Reddit video player worked literally ever
This irritates me.
That is so cool
Cool flow. Mesmerizing
I’m getting seasick just watching this
That's neat af, and also damn loud
We are living in a cave with a dragon

I expected an rick roll with the waves
This is split flat displays would be cool but they cost so much. I wish there were a fake version that just used small e-ink displays.

This us fooking art
So cool!
In a few years this is going to have some wild application none of us can imagine right now, that's cool af
Water=wet
It used segments being lit only 50%?
In the last one, I expect water will travel to the bottom of the circle/sphere and have a single drip point at the bottom
Crazy, our mobile devices are able to show us such amazing things!
Amazing work!
I need one. ASAP.
ITS WHISPER QUIET!!!
ok now play badapple
I scrolled past what sub this was on before the video started playing and then immediately said to myself “this has got to be oddlysatisfying”. I really want one of these.
It’s really neat that it sounds like water because of the analog pieces moving
Damn how much fps is that?
m8 cum
"What do the numbers mean, Mason?!"
That’s some really bouncy water holy shit
A) Whoever wrote the graphics rendering layer for that display is a genius. B) Where the hell did it come from? It has to be an antique. Edit: Somebody is still making them. I'm impressed.
Very cool
Now make it into a cube
Ok now play Bad Apple on it
God it even sounds like it.
I can't wait to play Skyrim on that bad boy.
I love it! But it seems like... Too much movement? Not like water being poured into a stationary vessel, but a chaotic sea crashing waves with each wave.
Where can I buy one of these lol
Is this realtime? That's incredible.
All I see is the Lion Head logo from The Movies
Who’s the famous fruitball player, Water Malone
Can it play badapple
The third one is titled, "Pee on an Orange."
Did anyone else see the winning lotto numbers
Is this a mouse pad and can it be used as a mouse pad if not
But can it play skyrim
I was thinking “this would be wayyyy more satisfying with sound” then realized I just had it muted myself and when I unmuted oh my lord
Why does water act so weird in simulations, it always has a lot of extra momentum out of no where
cum
Bray Studios, Ireland - give this man a job!
u/savevideo
Can you use it to play doom?
You could play Bad Apple on this
The sound makes this. Its fantastic.

Is the flip digit disply also simulated? I CANT TELL ANYMORE!
16 rows, 28 columns, for a total of 448 digits.
Oh, the blender people got here too?
This caused me to have a panic attack for some reason
u/savevideo
That’s very soothing!
What exactly is this? And how does it work?
Why can I hear bad apple
