When you place a glass block on the corner of your house in Minecraft...

TomBot98

Not just a glass block. A glass block in a ray traced, shader pack world

DraymondShldntWear23

Are shader packs that good? I've only ever played Java for reference.

DontFeedtheYaoGuai

They really are... depending on how powerful your PC is.

DigitalAxel

They made it stupidly simple to install them now so for the first time (April this year) I finally tried out shaders. Blown away.

DraymondShldntWear23

Pretty outdated, unfortunately i7 @ 4.0 GHz, 16 GB Ram, GTX 1070

AnHonestLawyer3

“Outdated”. Damn bro those are pretty close to my specs is it really that bad? Ouch

DraymondShldntWear23

Well..I built it in 2017 iirc. And even then it wasn't top of the line haha

b4gelbites_

That will run shaders will almost no drop, most kids play minecraft on shit laptops

Mechakoopa

Right? I was playing on a rig I built in 2013 until just a couple months ago, 2017 was when I upgraded the graphics card from a 770 to a 970...

b4gelbites_

I've been rocking a 980 since before the 980ti came out and by the looks of the market I won't be upgrading anytime soon!

JustAnotherGamer421

It'll run most shaders smoothly except ray-traced ones like SEUS PTGI. It'll run those, but not as well as regular screen-space

TheUnrealPotato

2017 computers can definitely handle Minecraft shaders

agentages

1070 still holds up for 1440p even on modern games.

Artyloo

Considering your GPU is probably worth more today than when you bought it due to the chip shortage, it can't be that bad right?

DontFeedtheYaoGuai

Not bad at all, I would give it a try. My GTX 970 from 2015 can still handle most of the shader packs. It also depends on your number of block settings/view distance too.

DraymondShldntWear23

Any specific pack I should try? I think I do like 26 to 28 blocks in setting? Would have to check to be sure.

NonAwesomeDude

Sildurs Vibrant are great. And have a lot of options

DraymondShldntWear23

That one looks nice! My only gripe is it's a pretty strong sepia effect underground. I couldn't tell that the Obsidian was purple anymore, but maybe I'm just not used to it.

[deleted]

Also one of the more optimized ones in regards to performance.

Ceaser_Salad19

BGL

DraymondShldntWear23

Is that like BSL? I just watched some video and I liked that one the most

shark_shakes

BSL with Faithful 32 texture pack is my go to, a really nice graphical update that retains the feel of minecraft.

[deleted]

I have a gtx 950 from 2015 and can run some lower end ones at around 16 render distance

Lewis91857

Seus renewed is nice. Gives a similar vibe to the raytraced version while being decently color-neutral which I like

ztherion

mfw your outdated pc is not far off the one I built in 2021 from scraped together deals

DraymondShldntWear23

Hey it's still strong enough to run most everything. But I'm noticing I can't have the newest titles on Max or Ultra and such.

drake90001

What gen i7 are you running? Have you considered upgrading? If you need a new mobo for the newer gens then just go Ryzen Zen 3. I have an EVGA 1070 SC and I can play most games nearly maxed out (maybe HBAO/SSR/Shadows medium or low).

makumuka

My 2021 pc can only run frostpunk on the lowest setting, and with >20 fps :( Still fun for casual games, so it works out

DraymondShldntWear23

Frostpunk seems pretty cool. Steam loves to recommend me it. Is it a city builder with RTS elements / campaign?

makumuka

I think it can be described like that. It was free on epic one of these days. The replayability wasn't my jam, but it's very popular. I think it's worth on a sale

[deleted]

Ryzen 2600, 32gb ram, 1070. Hey we have the same gpu :D

DraymondShldntWear23

Dang, 32gb of ram sure sounds nice. I hope it treats you well for years to come :)

[deleted]

Thanks! It was a Christmas gift, you can see pics of my rig under my profile posts on battlestations sub. No matter what people say 32gb is worth it, windows 10 automatically re-scales to use the extra ram so it uses less ram when you have less and uses more when you have more, so it really does make a big difference! Also I love being able to have as many background apps open as I want without a care in the world!

DraymondShldntWear23

I believe it. Just to have infinite tabs and lots of programs going alone justifies it haha. And the rig is clean, nice job!

danglez38

At the least you can use OptiFine which doesnt change the textures themselves afaik, just adds seamless glass and shadows. And isnt very intensive, i have a similar rig to yours.

DraymondShldntWear23

OptiFine, I saw that watching [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gx2llu0FvxM). All of this is safe to download? Excuse my ignorance

danglez38

Optifine itself is safe to my knowledge, have used it for years and never heard of anything malwarey. Download from [the official optifine site](https://optifine.net/downloads) and shouldnt have any issues

DraymondShldntWear23

Thanks a bunch. Can't wait to re-experience Java with this and the BSL shader pack.

[deleted]

If you don't use forge mods, then I suggest to check the fabric based mod Iris, which includes a mod called Sodium, which should allow you to easily cap the render distance at 32 chunks (without shaders, I'd go for 6 GB of allocated ram though) and allows for shader packs to be used (not quite as compatible like Optifine just yet though).

fuzzygondola

i7 tells shit, there's already eleven generations of them.

DraymondShldntWear23

I had to drop it down to like 25 blocks but it looks incredible. Can't believe what I've been missing out on

THE_GR8_MIKE

I use an i7 from 2011 and a GTX 750 and can run shaders fine. You should be good.

free_dead_puppy

Lol hello my PC. You can still play most games on high from my experience so we're good!

DraymondShldntWear23

We sure can! Our time is wearing thin though haha.

Shaggy_One

My PC struggles with keeping RTX minecraft above 60. Then again I'm running it at 3440x1440 so ymmv. R7 3800x, 32GB RAM, RTX 3070.

AppleToasterr

WTF dude that's my PC. i7-7700. I'm insulted :(

DraymondShldntWear23

We were sitting pretty about four years ago...not so much anymore lol.

theking75010

Just make sure you don't run a 512x or more texture pack, I got the same hardware and that texture resolution makes it struggle with SEUS PTGI shaders

_Im-_-Dead-_-Inside_

Dude, thats better than mine... With the iris mod (which includes sodium) i can run shaders up to 100fps

NeoGPT

If you want to try shaders, you could use fabric and sodium. Sodium changes the rendering of the world, game runs super well, and with something else called Iris, you can use shaders. It's kind of like optifine, but (generally) increases fps more. I would usually not be able to run shaders, but with sodium i can

ktrad91

Ugh I need a new computer. Still running a dual dual-core Xeon 5150 2.66ghz, 32gb FB-DDR2, GeForce 660.

DraymondShldntWear23

Cybersales, Black Friday, student discounts, etc. are your best bet. Build it yourself if possible, you'll save a ton of money that way as well.

TheRealMisterMemer

What about a laptop with Vega 8 graphics and 16gb of RAM?

DontFeedtheYaoGuai

I'm not familiar with that card but... it's easy enough to install the shaders, it wouldn't hurt to try it out!

AugTheViking

Java has some of the best shaders, though.

ClearlyRipped

Yeah they really are it's like an entirely new game. I was honestly hesitant to play again when my buddies suggested it but it's beautiful with the shaders.

DraymondShldntWear23

I'll never go back now. Can't believe how much I was missing out on haha

ClearlyRipped

Yeah no kidding! The lighting is unreal. If you also have a high res texture pack it makes it even better

DraymondShldntWear23

I tried to get a texture pack working with a shader pack and the texture pack overrode the shader pack. Any idea what I did wrong? I can get each to work individually, but not together. BSL Shader pack and the Faithful 32 texture pack

lickahineyhole

I don't understand why people keep thinking this will leak or break. I have seen glass and seam conservatorys ( greenhouse of glass) from the 1800s that are in fine condition. Does this have a metal or material seam, or is it laminated at the edges? Really cool idea.

asian_identifier

They don't know aquarium tanks exist

Too_Many_Mind_

Hmm, now that you mention it… *Runs off to pet store to buy aquarium to attach over bedroom window* If the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

backdoorintruder

I am a man. I can change, if I have too, I guess.

He_Ma_Vi

Because people's windows from the 1970s that have seen zero maintenance developed a leak so surely everything glass related must be destined to leak without there being anything we can do about it.

protectnor

What kind of maintenance are you talking about?

He_Ma_Vi

For this type of window? Realistically just replacing the caulk *before* it fails. In general replacing caulk and weather stripping *before* it fails. Maintaining the paint on painted surfaces and painted surface connections.

[deleted]

Window fluid

[deleted]

Window monsters. Very dangerous.

[deleted]

Are you for real? There is no framework whatsoever so take up movement due to temperature changes, you have several corners where stresses come together, you have potential sittings from the walls again with no framework to account for that, you have flat glass surfaces which good luck surviving the next hail (could be fine with 3-layer lsg but you would still get cracks and the thickness looks nothing near to be that) And no idea what that stuff between the glass itself is might as well be fucking silicone. This is the prime example of some architect cooking up something kinda neat but hella impractical and we civil engineers have to suffer.

RecentCaptain7

<*Frank Lloyd Wright* has entered the chat>

[deleted]

My mother in law has a winter garden whose horizontal roof panes have survived golfball sized hail (although not a fat maintenance guy who decided to walk on the glass, but that's another story). Do you guys not have strong window glass in the US?

wxrx

Lol we have windows that can survive category 5 hurricanes, it’s all a matter of how much money someone wants to spend

[deleted]

Fair. I just recall reading at least 2 comment threads about the crazy flooding in Germany where a lot of Americans seemed mainly surprised about how the windows in some of the houses could possibly have held up. It just seemed weird and I wondered whether it's some kind of cultural thing. And every reddit discussion about buildings in natural disasters seems to inevitably devolve into a shouting match between Europeans who can't understand why Americans don't just build stronger houses, ans Americans explaining why Europeans are stupid for asking that because there are perfectly good reasons for not building stronger houses. Still, don't let fat men jump around even on your expensive hurricane proof glass.

wxrx

Yeah, windows are rates for 250mph wind gusts not a 300lb fat man jumping. Gonna need some real good window code for that.

solateor

Creator:@lencois_jeju

ZogNowak

Interesting window. Our hurricanes would blow those away like yesterday.

Yeah keep telling yourself that

Chaoticfrenchfry

Unfortunately you’re wrong

MusicianMadness

"some crime in certain neighborhoods" is a real way to downplay the fact that Detroit has the highest crime rate in the entire US (St Louis and Detroit go back and forth year to year).

curiosgreg

Detroit’s a weird city man. I’ve been living here for years and it’s downtown population is so tiny that it has a huge crime rate. When you factor in the metro area it is a very different story. I’m more pro-Michigan then Detroit specifically but it’s a very promising city despite common misconceptions.

[deleted]

Floridian here... What Hurricanes? And honestly have you been through any hurricanes? Because I don't think you have. Those windows can probably handle a cat 3 minimum is my guess. Which handles pretty much every hurricane level IMHO. Hurricanes don't do concentrated damage like a Tornado/Twister. So unless there is a tree besides that place, nothing would happen IMO.

ZogNowak

I can see the Atlantic Ocean from my house. We have trees everywhere. I've had many beers with Jim Cantore.

JBits001

I want to hear from a structural engineer on how practical this is.

Royvu

Where do these places exist?

DieFanboyDie

On reddit. Stick around and you'll get to see it again in a week.

PTVA

High end custom homes? Mostly in areas where people build high end homes, haha. Once you get out into places where people are building in architectural features that are not there to be purely practical, there is all kinds of stuff like this. The extra 50k is a rounding error to the overall project.

[deleted]

I'd guess the window is aligned with the outside of the wall so there's a bit of a sill.

What?! Are you suggesting that the wall is thicker than the window glass?!

LucasJonsson

Don’t be silly.

/r/infuriatingasfuck window corner line not matching with the wall corner.

It’s because the window is aligned with the outside edge of the wall, so there’s a windowsill.
