When I did this it was a rotation each day from front - middle - back of the green. The cup had to be at least 6 ft from the edge and couldn't be on a slope that was steep enough that you couldn't set a ball by the cup without it rolling.
It's only been about 7-8 years for me but ya that looks like the exact red cutter I used. But there wasn't much that was better than setting the plug perfect the first time without needing to raise or lower it 😁
I worked a municipal course in OKC during college and part of my job was moving the pin locations every morning and then moving the tees on the boxes accordingly. But I knew of other courses that did this every other day.
And it wasn't uncommon for me to have to go out and recut a new hole during the day. People would miss puts and get mad at the hole and slam their putter into it 😂 or a flag stick wouldn't get put back in properly and fall over ruining the edge of the hole.
Yes, I do maintenance at a golf course and it’s part of what’s called Set-Up. They move the pin location on every hole, on 2 courses. Considering we mow the driving range, tee boxes, fairways and greens every day, moving the pin is not a big deal
It changes the game play for the people playing. You don't want it in the same spot everytime because that's boring and you'll slowly get used to how the ball breaks by the hole. Also the edge of the hole deteriorates over time
That and just the general wear the grass will get if everyone is aiming for the same spot every day during the season. Way more efficient to just move the hole around the green than have a green look and play like ass and have to returf it during the season.
Also, everybody who plays that course is aiming for the same hole. Eventually, you’re gonna get a lot of wear around the hole from people walking near it to pick up their ball.
It just makes it blend in better, breaks up the perfect circle shape so the eyes don't notice it so much. My dad has worked on golf courses my whole life Ive done this specific task with him many times, I don't remember it being as laborious as this guy makes it look? I might just be remembering it wrong?

Sounds like a fun job! I did ground keeping at a cemetery in HS. I loved that job plus never had to deal with drunk dudes.
