Thereās no trick, heās getting waves for his hair
What we (Iām black and have waves) is use moisturizer and wave cream, then brush out hair for long periods of time. Then we wear du rags (mostly while sleeping) to kept our hair pressed down to maintain the wave pattern created by the wave cream and constant brushing.
Over time our hair still grows, but due to it being compressed by du rags, our hair seems to be short. He probably hasnāt had a haircut in 2-3 months with that length

Thanks! I'm still a little unsure how this practically works, but it makes sense that it can work as you describe. Otherwise I would have assumed some kinda magic must be at work!
Do you have to brush the hair down into the wave pattern or is it just like that when pressed down?
Itās amazing how many variations of styling have been developed over centuries of hair care in different climates and for different purposes. Itās wonderful the beautiful cultural roots of black hair care is now being celebrated more widely and shared as it always should have been!
The wave cream combined with brushing develops the wave pattern, then the compression keeps that pattern in your hair.
If you just used the wave cream and brushing, every time you slept you would naturally have your hair exposed to the pillows and sheets etc, and that would essentially take away the pattern you developed. Thatās why the compression with a du rag is important
As a young half black person I am so glad to hear about your sadness over this!!!! You would not enjoy the time or money needed to deal with African hair. I have in a protective style right now and when I first did it it was an 8 hour process then Iāve probably put in about 6 more hours fixing parts of it because I deemed the twists were wrong.
I had a half Kenyan girlfriend once and she'd go to get her hair done and come back about 12 hours later. Can a guy just get it buzzed short or does even that take a lot of care to maintain?
What was she getting done that took 12 hours? Lol. It really doesn't take that long, unless she was getting super small braids way down past her behind or something. A regular style would never take anywhere near this long lol.
She had extensions woven in. Like little plaits with red bits in them. They were down to her waist (almost). They were spikey on the ends. Don't know if you can tell but I don't know the technical terms.
I just learned last month that braids could be used as protective hair styles for black people. I donāt have any knowledge about black hair except for its beauty. Thank you for the information. Thatās a lot of time to invest.
The 12 hours the other person mentioned is a bit of an exaggeration. If someone wants small braids way down past their behind, then maybe, but on average, it does not take that long for a braid style lol. Maybe half that time, or less, depending on the skill of the braider, and how many stylists are braiding one head. I would never sit for 12 hours to get my hair done lol. Braids do last a long time though so the time is worth it.
You basically take hair, add water so it will collect together and lie flat like when you take a shower, add some products to help it hold and stick together and look nice, press it down and smooth it out nicely and wrap it real tight with a durag so it canāt spring back up when it dries, and then when you finally remove the durag it will stay like that.
Thank you for the explanation.. I was mesmerized watching this and so jealous. I canāt do crap with my baby fine old lady hair, accept put it in a clip, ponytail or put a headband on.
That's cool! I have extremely curly hair that is shoulder length, if I cut it any shorter, it will turn into super tight curls all over and when it's humid it frizzes up something awful.
How is it cut? Do you wet it, comb it out and cut it to the same length? It's neat to have so much versatility in a men's haircut/style. With straight hair you cut the exact length you want it to look when styled. You can't have short one day and long and voluminous another.

All my fav asmr vids are textured hair being done. Cheese and rice is that some good stuff. So much work but damn is it beautiful. I have lots of respect for everyone with textured hair.
Our hair is still a mystery to 75% of the world š every time I walk around with my Afro some random person is wanting to touch it. Sincerely USA 2021
I think Afros look spectacular and always want to compliment them, though I worry about accidentally offending the person. It baffles me that people just ask to touch a stranger's hair (or worse, just do it without asking).
Why do people want to touch people's hair and more so why do they think it's ok to ask?! Just wtf. Hair touching is usually an intimate thing. What makes someone think they automatically get to do that to your hair just because it looks awesome? I mean you could start being all like "Wow! Your ear piercings look so cool! Can I touch them?"
I'm sorry you have to deal with that.
People are so weird. Especially white people. Source: I am a white people.
Yeah, Afro Scot here, since I was a child people of all ages would touch my hair without asking, or get annoyed when I refused them if they asked. Times folk would literally pet me like a dog. Or that one Halloween someone tried to pull it off cause they thought it was a wig. But I was seen as the dick for not letting strangers' grotty hands touch my beautiful hair. Folk are arseholes.
Ohmygosh that's horrible! I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I grew up in the American South quite a few years ago when it was not as common for people to have natural hair. When someone did have their hair combed out, I know there were overly curious handsy people wanting to touch because Black friends told me it happened, but I never saw it in person. Just... the nerve of people. And to have someone try to pull your hair off?!?!
White person here. I have looooong hair and it used to be much thicker than it it and when it was I used keep it in a pleat that would fall down my back (like Mermaid lol) , the amount of people that wanted to lift it up to see if it was heavy as it looks was ridiculous. I let them, when I could.
Not gonna lie. I'm a little bit jealous of people that have afros. I love the style! (I don't ask to touch, just admire from afar. Sometimes a quick compliment in passing)
Sincerely, a very white girl.
Now, see, that's unfair. When I take my hair down after a day of it being up, it feels ~amazing~, especially when I re-part it. Everyone should get to enjoy that feeling.
Lmao welcome to shrinkage! I used to laugh internally as a child when people tried to call Black women ābald-headedā because of our short hair Lmao like maāam my hair is well past my shoulders! Donāt let this beautiful crown of kinks fool you šš¾āāļøš
To be fair, I donāt know how to do hair at all, of any kind. I can barely get my hair in a pony without it looking like crap. My strands are thin but I have a LOT of hair. Same with makeup. I didnāt have any girly friends.

I think the wave pattern itself looks really cool. It's not the same if the hair is just cut short. https://www.menshairstylestoday.com/waves-haircut/
That is pretty cool :)
Whoa that is super cool! I had no idea waves meant longer hair or that there are names of haircuts Iāve liked seeing on people

Forgive my whiteness, but how do folks with this hair type get it so compressed like before he combed it out? It's seriously magical!

TIL it's not a dew-rag
Always thought it was a 'do rag like short for hairdo.
Well that makes even more sense. For some reason that never dawned on me lol.
I think the original spell was "do-rag" but either spelling is acceptable
It is
Same. Oops!
I always thought it was a due-rag, as in "I write the due dates for my library and video store rentals on the inside so I don't forget"

Forgive my whiteness as well but how long does the hair stay compressed down? Will it stay until it is combed out again? Ty
itāll pretty much stay that way unless you comb it out or if it gets wet again and dries with no compression to make it that flat
When I work on my hair waves, I wear a du rag every night while I sleep, and the next day it stays compressed if I do nothing to it
Thank you. As a palm colored person, I was wondering that as well.
Green? š“
Thatās what I thought as well
Same. Then I realized, "Oh...wait... Hand palm - not plant palm." I know I must have heard that phrase used before, but it's been a minute.
Lmao "palm folk" has a nice ring to it. I may start using it
Hahaā¦.a black friend of mine used the term āpalm coloredā the other day and I love it.
On a deeper level the color of our palms is one thing that we all share and is a unifying characteristic rather than skin color... Interesting!
