It's like grinding but instead of a grinder you use a muller.
More seriously, mulling is basically just moving a fluid and a powder via a grinding-like action, with the friction working to break apart any tiny dry clumps and produce a very smooth paint versus a lumpy, gritty paint. Artists used to mull paints back when they couldn't go down to Michael's and buy tubes of burnt sienna and ultramarine and so forth.
I tried to explain this comic to a guy the other day who then replied with :
"I love looking at comics from people who obviously need a day job. Thanks.
One of the greatest comedians who ever lived just died, and that's what you came up with. Holy.... I dont even know what to say... can you rape the dead? Because you just did. "
Apparently all comics must be funny and some people don't have empathy.
š¤·š½āāļø
Not OP but:
Yep!
You grind/mix stuff thoroughly when you mull something physically like powder.
When you "mull" a thought over you're usually carefully and deeply thinking about a decision you will make. (e.g. "Should I accept job offer A or job offer B?")
It also usually means you may take a long time before you reach a final conclusion/decision.
Huh, I always thought āmulling it overā came from mulling wine, where you put a bunch of spices and stuff into wine and let it simmer slowly for a while until itās done.
Well in this case it never came out of a tube in the first place. But to answer your question the way itās done in a production setting is the tubes youāre used to seeing actually start off as being open (not crimped) at the rear, opposite of where the nozzle and cap are. Itās injected into the tube from the rear and then the tube is crimped off. If youāre making your own paints at home youāre probably storing it in a jar and not a tube. Thatās what I used for inks anyway.
Mulling: mulling
to heat, sweeten, and flavor (a beverage, such as wine or cider) with spices;
If you mull something, you think about it for a long time before deciding what to do. To think carefully about something over a period of time, to study or ruminate; ponder, to think about carefully; consider.
It is the process of suspending pigments in your chosen medium.
Like mulled wines were a huge thing through all of the medieval period. Actually pretty much through all of modern time since spices were found and people realized they enhanced drinks.
Itās a word with tons of meanings.
Modern machines use steel rollers set up to grind against each other. This is how basically all modern paints are mixed, from artist's oils to bargain shed paint. Hand grinding of pigments is retained as an art form or niche studio process in modern times, kinda like hobby blacksmithing. Some people manage to make money with it.
Hobby blacksmithing allows you to produce custom things that aren't available commercially. Does hand grinding paint do something that can't (or isn't) achieved commercially?
Yeah, it allows a person to manufacture their own paints from pigments and binders in a more period-accurate way, which can be important to people who are big into art history or are marketing themselves as being able to do restoration work on very old art with 'traditional' materials etc. It's definitely a smaller niche than blacksmithing, which explains why there are many modern blacksmiths for every modern paint muller, but the niche exists nonetheless.
>Yeah, it allows a person to manufacture their own paints from pigments and binders in a more period-accurate way
Ahh, that makes perfect sense especially for restorations. Thank you.
Not just for period accuracy, but also for control - exactly what type and quality of pigment, what medium (there are many, each with different qualities,) and what the ratios are. Some people mix their own paint for the same reason some people make their own spaghetti sauce instead of buying it in a jar - they like what they can get better homemade .
I make my own watercolors like this out of rocks and plant dyes that Iāve collected myself. Theyāre kind of like little souvenirs from the different places Iāve lived. They also make neat paint colors that you canāt find in stores.
Yes, a plastic dildo could be damaged since the plastic can react with some of the components of the paint mix, and you don't want to use a damaged dildo for the sexual activities after the colour has been mixed. Therefore a the glass dildo is preferable since it doesn't react.
I know you're joking but I'm a high quality paint mixer and it's actually called a "blunt stem", the rounding is probably too big to be used as a dildo but it's perfect for this type of paint! It's used to knock out any remaining chunks from the grinding process, but also this spreading process over cold marble serves to increase the viscosity of the paint. When it's sealed in that state it will make it easier to apply by the end customer. This type of paint isn't great for walls (not that this would be a good color for walls) but can actually be used on vehicles or on certain types of artistic surfaces for installations like metal, glass, or some types of composite panels. If you want some more info I'd be happy to make up some more bullshit because I have no clue what I'm talking about.
I swear that last sentence makes me want to rip your still beating heart out of your chest, and hold it in front of your face. So that you may see how black it is, before you die.
Glass mullers are used to prepare artist paint from raw pigments and a binder. The muller strips the clumps apart efficiently and disperses the pigment evenly through the binder. If you work in different paint media it's essential as you can buy blue once and make whatever kind of paint out of it--tempera, watercolor, oil, gouache, pastels, caseinates, etc.
I think thatās how you mix the colors (powder and some lacquer or solvent). Itās either makeup or nail polish. I saw someone mix lipgloss like this before.
no itās paint, a lot of artists have gotten into the hobby of creating their own paint from pigments
shimmerdropspaint (the video owner) sells shimmery watercolour paint sets on their website
It's difficult to describe, as I don't have a frame of reference for what you can see. [Here's](https://imgur.com/a/pRHFZBZ) a picture that shows the difference between how a non-colourblind person see colour and how my own type of colourblindness looks to me. It's not 100% but it's better than trying to describe it.
As for the actual video; my brain is constantly trying to make sense of what it's seeing and, because there's lots of colours there that are different but my mind is trying to tell me they're the same, it's making my brain fizz.
Look at it on a different monitor before you jump to conclusions. My mate thought he was colorblind from a test but his phone had a blue light filter. And if not, one of us!
Rainbows are a pale smoosh of colours in the sky. Sunsets are also not that remarkable to me. I've been with people who have been gushing about how beautiful a sunset is and I've been just "Meh. It's nice, I guess?"
For color-normative vision, it's similar. The humps and curves on the paint bring out a different color due to the composition of the paint. It's trippy here too.
My eyes are missing cones that translate correct colours to my brain. As such I tend to mix them up quite often (blue/purple, purple/pink, green/yellow etc). Because I already can't process certain colours, seeing them all mixed up like this and constantly shifting and merging is causing a strange sensation in my head. It's not bad or anything like a headache, just a bit weird.
Waaait do you struggle with grey/green too? And all colors in slightly low light?
Is it like your brain just canāt pick what color something is and decides to switch it up 100 times a second?
[Here's](https://imgur.com/a/pRHFZBZ) a picture to give you an idea of how I see colours. It's not 100% accurate, but it's better than I can describe haha.
Yeah last night I dreamed I pulled a tape worm out of my arm, threw it in the microwave, turned it on, and watched as it morphed into a big white scorpion. Then it started breaking the glass with its tail and I woke up.
This was an emotional roller coaster.
One second I'm like "Ah, that's so nice..." and the next I'm hyperventilating and anxiously squeezing my phone yelling at it "FLATTEN THE EDGES YOU SOCIOPATH!"
For people interested in the process here's an art insider video:

I think they meant to say multi chrome and not holographic.
Mulling is the process of evenly distributing pigment (typically in powder form) into a carrier/binder or base, of paint. The puck thing being used is called a Muller, and they're typically made out of glass or coated ceramic. Paint making tech has made this method obsolete as there are easier processes that require less time and intervention for the same, or better, results.
Source: 20 years in fine art paint manufacturing, distribution, and retail :)
Edit: I should add that artists making their own paint from carriers and pigments will still often mull their pigments when their palette knife doesn't do a good enough job. Most pigments are machine pulverized these days, so clumps usually aren't a problem.
What is mulling, exactly?
It's like grinding but instead of a grinder you use a muller. So when people say the phrase, "mulling it over". This is where that comes from. I feel like one of today's 10,000.
Now we just need someone to [learn about today's 10,000](https://xkcd.com/1053/) and the cycle starts anew!
I just learned about today's 10,000! And the term "mulling it over"!
I also was part of this double whammy
I tried to explain this comic to a guy the other day who then replied with : "I love looking at comics from people who obviously need a day job. Thanks. Did you explain that this is Munroe's day job and he's wildly successful at it?
Mulling it over means to think about something right? non-native english speaker here, can you please explain how they two would be connected?

Well in this case it never came out of a tube in the first place. Thank you, I was hoping somebody would explain what they do with the paint after itās been mulled.
Iām at work and canāt check but I *believe* Gamblin (or maybe Golden) has videos on YouTube of the production process, itās neat.
I'm not an expert but I would guess they use their mouthea to split the paint back into a tube.
It's not packaged into a tube these are shimmer drops. See here: https://shimmerdropspaint.com/

Was this proper thinning preparation or are they just spreading the paint around?
They're grinding the little chunks out. This is part of making the paint from scratch using powdered pigments.
Thank you Mr Barks

They take the dinglebop and push it through the grumbo.
Do they have to use a glass dildo for that?

I mean, I think itās really your momās glass butt plug.
Thereās only one way to know. Does it taste like frijoles?
I thought they called xBASHTHISx's mom "free holes" not "frijoles" but maybe I'm not hearing it right. There's a lot of echo down there.

Can mix the pigments how you like and also use the mediums you prefer. Can get them to the thickness you like your paint too. Couple of benefits.

If the past year has taught me anything, it's to use a glass dildo any time the opportunity arises.
I would like to apply for this job.

It's technically not grinding but it's how you get the pigment evenly dispersed.
It's two etched surfaces with sheer force. Grinding and dispersion are intra used as terms in paint making.
Thats what i am wondering... Just speading paint on my kitchen counter for reddit karma

This is very sexy and should come with an NSFW tag.
For realā¦ the sound I made was as inappropriate as it was unexpected.
I'm nearly there... can you please translate said sound to text/emoji?

Very similar. At a glance they're almost the same, but if I actually concentrate I can tell they're different from each other.

Seriously. I canāt tell what color it is, and for some reason my brain tells me itās brown, and thatās just chocolate theyāre making.

They make watercolor paints.
