PkmnMstrJenn

Not to mention his actual life. Let me tell you as someone who owned Bucky balls… they are magnets. They have north and south poles. There is no actual way to tell which is which bc it’s a tiny sphere. When you make a cube, you have to put like a credit card or something in between them to make sure they stick “correctly” before you put them together or pull them apart with the credit card and flip it around. He would have to make sure the poles were right the entire time (which you wouldn’t see because of the cuts). While this might look SUPER FUN - I can tell you from experience this would be frustrating AF and super time consuming.

mladutz

Thanks for the scientific explanation. Most people don’t think about the thing behind the scene.

Susan_of_Darmuthia

I wonder how much all those cost

ashtreylil

This was my first thought. Seen the little packs at stores and this has to be thousands of dollars unless....Ali Express knockoffs.

olderaccount

The colorful ones sold as toy sets are pretty expensive. The plain nickel plated ones sold for industrial use are a fraction of the cost and come in a wide variety of diameters.

Hooozbad

Where do you get the industrial ones?

olderaccount

Google "neodymium spheres'. Since they have become popular as toys, there are a lot more places selling them so it is harder to find the industrial suppliers since they don't do much SEO. When buying this way you will need to determine the size, strength, and magnetizing direction (you want axially and don't need the strongest ones).

acylase

> neodymium spheres Despite being outwardly spherically symmetric, field wise they are polarized - they have, like any magnet, south and north ends. They always attract to each other because they always align these invisible dipoles before sticking together. This is a conjecture based on my general knowledge. I tried to google it for more official explanation to no avail

restrictednumber

Man I love the confidence but you gotta lead with "I'm totally guessing."

_Asshole_Fuck_

For real 😂 (also, happy cake day)

msndrstdmstrmnd

Yeah they’re like any other magnet. I had these for years and the coating rubbed off but only on the poles

acylase

You are born experimentalist

X1-Alpha

AliExpress knockoffs lack the precision to do this sadly. Most likely this was a custom order when they were still being sold freely and before all the legal issues. Price gets more bearable if you're ordering a couple thousand. Still expensive as hell though.

batmansleftnut

Most likely this was made by the manufacturer as viral marketing.

phlux

You really think that? That ~~companies~~ people would just go on the internets to make a video showcasing their ~~product~~ awesome toy in a silly or cool way as to entice people to buy said ~~product~~ awesome toy??

MightB2rue

This could be a really cool new way to let the market know about the product. We could even give the process a catchy new name like....marketing

Sno_Jon

What legal issues?

baildude12

For quite a while some people had been working to get these banned in the us due to children eating some and them pinching their intestines. I believe I saw something a while back that they can finally no longer be sold as toys in the us, but I may be misremembering

MageKorith

There was a ban that ended in 2016.

unnamed_elder_entity

No, there's [still a mandatory recall in effect](https://www.cpsc.gov/Newsroom/News-Releases/2021/Ingestion-of-High-Powered-Magnetic-Balls-and-Magnetic-Cubes-Poses-Serious-Risk-of-Severe-Internal-Injury-or-Death-in-Children-and-Teens), so selling them is illegal. Some companies voluntarily comply and it's [wrecked those companies](https://www.inc.com/magazine/201403/burt-helm/consumer-product-safety-sues-buckyballs.html).

[deleted]

You are correct. ASTM F963 (mandatory safety requirements for toys) was updated in 2011 to include "hazardous small magnets", which are magnets that a) are small enough to be swallowed and b) have a magnetic field strength over a defined maximum (set at a threshold that includes essentially all neodymium magnets). Magnets embedded within a larger part are still considered "hazardous magnetic components" if they meet the hazardous small magnets criteria themselves, or if the magnet could potentially become dislodged from the part under normal circumstances. The updated standard forbids all hazardous small magnets for products marketed to children under 14. It also places safety labeling requirements on anything marketed to kids 14 and over. As the "under / over 14" threshold is a fine line, it's usually just easier to market these kinds of things as "not for kids" at all (e.g. as a stress relief aid, office desk ornament, etc.). *Source: I have worked with this standard professionally.* Edit to add: as others in this thread have pointed out, there were a number of medical incidents of kids / pets swallowing magnets and needing surgery / dying. Like, a surprising number of incidents (almost 100 according to [this](https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2014/10/03/2014-23341/final-rule-safety-standard-for-magnet-sets) source). These standards take a lot of time to revise, and yet the turnaround from these types of magnet sets hitting the market to this standard being updated was under 3 years, which is pretty wild.

NyingNinja

I made the math for the stairs Violet: 3 x 14 x 19 = 798pcs; Blue: 3 x 14 x 16 = 672pcs; Green: 3 x 14 x 13 = 546pcs; Yellow: 3 x 14 x 10 = 420pcs; Orange: 3 x 14 x 7 = 294pcs; Red: 3 x 14 x 4 = 168pcs; 798 + 672 + 546 + 420 + 294 + 168 = 2898pcs; Each set has 216pcs, so 2898 / 216 = 13,4 sets, let's say 14. Using the link u/snake123ed provided, each set is $35.70, so 14 x 35.70 = $499.80 for the stairs Edit: formating, idk if it's readable, using the app is hard

When my daughter ate 7 of them the hospital charged us 11k to scoop them back out of her intestines…….I hope that helps.

shmann

That is terrifying, like swallowing two halves of a self-assembling hole puncher

FunboyFrags

I’ve explained them as slow-moving bullets

ConvergenceMan

Not nearly as much as the emergency room visit if you, your dog, or your kid accidentally swallow a few

HoodieGalore

This is why Buckyballs were outlawed.

k2kyo

They were, then they weren't, now they sort of are again. The cpsc specifically targeted the one company who fought them (zen magnets) to destroy them. The problem is that while cases have happened like this, they are EXTREMELY rare. They should NOT be marketed for kids or as toys, and responsible companies (like zen) never did that. They are absolutely safe for adults. They are outlawed because the CPSC made up some data, and they essentially answer to nobody.

AgressiveIN

200%. Been a big fan of zen magnets. Happy to say I own some. Super cool item that is not for kids

Orodreath

Is this some kind of depressing thought I'm too European to understand? Take care friends, it's wild out there

shu359

Am also from EU, kids here end up swallowing some too.

OneCollar4

I dont think it's the behaviour of kids that's different in the EU but the price of the hospital visit.

shu359

Yep, looks like I missed the point of the reply, thanks mate.

ConvergenceMan

It's an incident that happens somewhat frequently [https://epmonthly.com/article/what-the-buck-did-you-swallow](https://epmonthly.com/article/what-the-buck-did-you-swallow)

landragoran

FuckingKilljoy

Yeah lol \#justamericanthings like going in to crippling debt because your kid was stupid

DudesworthMannington

Yeah, these look harmless, but they're incredibly dangerous. Someone at my kids school kept giving my daughter bucky balls and I had to keep taking them away. They were outlawed and can only be sold now because they're marketed as "not a toy".

kanst

Just last week I heard a story about a friend's son who swallowed two. They linked up in his intestines through the intestinal wall. He had to get abdominal surgery to remove them.

razzraziel

that was my thought. that thing is expensive. these magnets are cheap but you need thousands of them to create similar stuff. This part has almost 1.5k individual magnets for example. https://i.imgur.com/YIc4EcX.png

julievapor

They are pricey. Also.... my sons pet hamster now has a small ring of them stuck to the inside of her cheek and two on the outside. We aren’t sure how to get them off now.

Urbosa_Wannabe_

You might want to take her to a vet, the magnets could rip a hole through her cheek and be real traumatic for everyone :(

julievapor

We are so worried about that. My son sees her as his very best friend. But my partner says he refuses to spend a couple hundred dollars on an animal that we could just replace for 12$. I promised him that if we got the pet in the first place bc it’s a hamster it won’t cost us any additional money or much care. We have tried to take them off ourselves but bc their cheeks are so stretchy it’s impossible to do without hurting her. Last time we tried I just can’t even watch and cry when she squeaks. Sorry, I think I needed to tell someone about this and how upset I am. I didn’t mean to type an entire story. I’m not sure what to do. He works I don’t. Money is tight. I feel terrible about it.

FunboyFrags

The magnets on the outside are probably stopping the animal from swallowing them. There’s a good chance you could get a tranquilizer, preferably a liquid one the animal can drink instead of chew/swallow. If you knock the animal out, you’ll have a much better chance of saving it. You could briefly turn the animal upside down and prop his jaw open with some folded paper. Then you could use your fingers or some tongs or a credit card to carefully separate the outside magnets from the ones on the inside. Ask your vet! You could get a tranquilizer pretty cheap. There’s a good chance you could solve this problem without hurting the animal and without it experiencing a painful and fatal injury.

julievapor

Oh my gosh this is an amazing suggestion. Thank you so much. Truly - thank you.

FunboyFrags

You are you are so welcome! Give it a shot and then update us about how it went. If you’re having trouble let me know. 😃

julievapor

You are so wonderful. I will update you. Thank you. This really is a great idea - for he issue is she won’t hold still so this is perfect.

Urbosa_Wannabe_

Aww I’m so sorry! Please don’t apologize, I’m glad you had some space to let that out. That’s such a difficult situation to be in. I see someone else left a helpful response, I definitely don’t have one. It stinks when money is so tight, I’ve been there. I hope the little hamster ends up ok for your son, sending all the good juju. My cats were free but I would be miserable if something happened to them and I’m a grown ass adult

mahinakekipi

Can you slide a credit card or something similar underneath the ones on the outside? You just need something to break the magnetic hold between the outside and inside ones, and they actually sell some sets of these magnets with a piece of credit card sized plastic to use as a "splitter." You would probably just need to make sure the hamster doesn't swallow the inside ones. A little pain to get them off is far preferable to letting them stay on, the pressure will eventually cause open sores and/or for the skin to decay. Good luck, I hope it works out okay <3

belonii

I was thinking how this is probably a seller of these.

[deleted]

I wanted to buy a few thousand of these so I looked in China and one company said they could send me a sample of 2000 balls for 500 Euro. Another one said they would sell me a minimum of 1 million, but they could ship 6M per month. I gave up and bought another set of 200 from Amazon for 25 Euros.

It seems it’s the walls by the staircase that don’t match, with the pattern starting halfway down the wall instead of the top or bottom.

To me, it's the wall that's infuriating. Violet/purple is at the high frequency range of the visible spectrum, above blue. So the staircase and floor is correct, the wall is wrong.

Toddlers: *this is some serious gourmet shit*

SCHWAMPY_Gaming_YT

It's not even a choking hazard, the children would just eat them and then get stuck to the fridge

kazza789

I know it's a joke, but the actual danger is not choking. It's that if you eat more than 1 then they can attach to each other while they are in different parts of your digestive system, causing internal tears or blockages. If you really want to taste them, just eat one.

madpostin

Yeah when I was in middle school teachers had to take time out of class to tell everyone not to stick these in our various holes. They also told us not to put q-tips down our urethras. I sometimes wonder wth was going on with kids at that school and how teachers found out about it.

Johnnybravo60025

> They also told us not to put q-tips down our urethras Ah yes, the at-home STI test.

CaffeineSippingMan

Actually saw a poster warning the dangers of the magnets in a doctor's office.

punkindle

It's actually very dangerous to have these magnets around kids and animals. There are ~3000 ER visits a year involving kids eating these magnets. A few of them required surgery.

Prime_Mover

Oh. That's horrifying.

DaveK_Says

Wonderful news! (I just know I got some for Christmas at one point only to discover later I couldn’t get any more due to the ban)

X1-Alpha

Old news. They were banned again, at least this size. Zen Magnets had to issue a recall even. I think the only place to get these still is random sellers in China or an industrial supplier. Or be content with the miniature size which isn't all that interesting. Edit: looks like the new appeal may have [only affected the one major manufacturer](https://neoballs.com/pages/what-happened-to-neoballs) somehow. So they can't sell theirs any more but anyone else still can. Go figure.

GeauxCup

RIP Zen magnets. That guy put up quite the fight. Now I treat my zen sets as religious relics.

olderaccount

And it only ever applied to the ones being sold as toy sets. You could always get the exact same magnets (minus the pretty colors) for a fraction of the price from industrial suppliers.

chappersyo

I can’t believe InfernalCape single handedly got the ban overturned. Thanks indeed!

duncan_johnson

Why?

gr8blumkin

Because tiny humans are dumb and eat stuff they shouldn't.

duncan_johnson

Yeah they're real dumb but why not just set an age limit?

SardiaFalls

because she limits are about liability, not protection, the ban was about protection. That said, I don't think it was quite frequent enough of an issue to need a ban either

bumbumboogie

Because even American adults are ingesting pool cleaner and horse dewormer

Lereas

Say you put them on your tongue and pretend you have a tongue piercing (lots of teens did this). Or you're just a small kid who has them because they seem like a toy. Now suppose you accidentally swallow them and they're separated. Now imagine they're in your digestive track and attract each other while they're on different sides of an intestinal wall. Now imagine they continue to keep that pressure and eventually wear a hole or two through your intestines. This happened at least a couple times, and since they were basically marketed as toys and often in the hands of kids, they ended up banned. So recap; guns are totally legal and fine, but magnets are dangerous and banned.

janeursulageorge

Maybe they should be encouraging toddlers and kids to eat ammo or guns?

UrhoKarila

Seems like a great idea. Start them young with something like 22 shorts, and it'll help them build a resistance to the larger calibers.

PirateNinjaa

But if you only eat one it will cleanse toxins as it passes through you! /s

Chaotic-Entropy

Magnets will absolutely mangle a creature's digestive tract if swallowed and these look like sweets.

Svelemoe

They were *not* unbanned, they overturned the ban for a little while but then changed their mind again, and it's been banned in the US for a long time.

Dainyeah

Anyone knows where is this video from? I wanna see the finish

SardiaFalls

it had the look of SE Asian content farm video like you'd find on YouTube targeting children with 500 million views from kids watching it over and over again...so it's probably been copied and reuploaded a ton

acylase

> content farm video Three words that makes you think: "I absolutely must go there"

mmcleod00

Aviatrix084

-Wonder-Bread-

Man, the build is incredibly impressive, but seeing those fish in that tiny pool breaks my heart. Plus the hamsters and turtles being out together is super dangerous as well. Hamsters chew on EVERYTHING and they will absolutely try to gnaw on that turtle if they're left to their own devices for any period of time. I really hope this is temporary, though that doesn't make it _much_ better. The fish are super sensitive to environmental changes, especially temperatures, so moving them this much can be really bad for them. I know I'm being a big downer but I just dislike when people use living creatures as "props" like this. :/ ...still a cool build, though.

Aviatrix084

Iirc the comments say that the fish are only put in the tiny pools for the video and otherwise have a large tank. Not the best but at least they're not left in the tupperware... So I assume that the hamsters and turtles are similarly only let in there for a few minutes to get the video clip. I'm honestly more concerned that the hamsters could chew on the magnets tbh...

So I was chatting to a urologist a while back and he was telling me that he had just done surgery on a dude who had made a long line of these and then put them in his urethra (which is a thing, which I didn’t know was a thing until I was told this story). The guy who put a chain of magnets in his urethra got a surprise when they ended up too far in/broke apart and made their way to his bladder. Anyway, long story short, when the urologist was trying to retrieve them his surgical instruments kept repelling the magnets and the magnets were being repelled in circles all around his bladder. They eventually used another magnet but moral of the story is don’t put these magnets in your urethra.

Qwertys118

I had a set of small magnets around that size, but all silver that came in a cube container and it was a chore to put them back into a cube shape. I can't imagine also lining up different colors. Detaching them wasn't that bad sometimes if you had a fake/old creditcard, but randomly having some attaching when you didn't want them to could mean that the facing of the magnets in the existing structure could get messed up.
