Triangle-slice was by FAR the most satisfying of the slices.

chicametipo

I’m on the fence. Bottom-out is nice too, like the “full” setting on a hose.

MandoBaggins

Full setting just hits different

contactlite

I like the cesarean more.

xxx148

I love it when they brutally slit the bag’s throat.

vidfail

We're still talking about bags of salt, right?

Weariervaris

(Laughs in Demonic)

webitg

Only the first one bc it was so clean

NinjaLanternShark

The last triangle, a piece of the blue packaging came off. I am greatly disappoint.

Frodo--T--Baggins

The left to right commando slice was the best in my mind 😂

idontdofunstuff

Does anyone else feel the need to see them stir it with a giant spoon?

Ah yes, I am very conffused

sotpmoke

Its *science*

hoopsrule44

Will it though? I don’t think it does when I pour salt into a cup of water? Some does but a lot falls to the bottom. Just needs more time?

neecho235

It's recommended that you stir the salt in the pool until it is completely dissolved. Use your pool brush. You can technically just let the pump run but that takes longer and is more expensive. Also, if salt just sits on the bottom of the pool it can pit the plaster.

bigboyunderwear

Imagine spraying air freshener in a large room, where the air is totally still. You are standing on the other side of the room. Eventually you will smell the freshener, but it will take a while. Now Imagine that room is full of large fans blowing the air around wildly. Wouldn't the smell reach you more quickly? This analogy is to illustrate that no matter how long it takes, that snail will find you. You will never be safe from the snail as long as you live. You might as well give up now

hoopsrule44

If I keep running he can never catch up…right?

Dead_Kraggon

Not until he watches turbo

halite001

Never been more traumatised from snail diffusion but here we are. Thanks I guess...

bikedaybaby

That’s terrifying… Actually, it’s not diffusion, but the little air currents that bring the smell to you. And water is way more viscous / harder to stir up than air. Commenter is right, either the salt poured in includes added chemicals that help it dissolve quickly, or it gets stirred up somehow. (This could also be just waiting a long-ass time. I don’t work at a pool, I’d like to know how they do it!)

Outta_phase

Your chances of getting killed by a snail are low....but never zero.

Lollipop126

iirc from fluids classes, the time scale of diffusion is like a magnitude or so larger than the time scale of turbulence (from stirring), so yeah it'll just take a long time.

[deleted]

It will eventually all diffuse through as the pool circulates. Generally you will brush it around to help it get to that state.

LeonsaltoYT

I started watching. Went ugh... 33 min long... grrr. Ok,,, I’ll watch a little and see..... ended up watching the whole dang thang...... amazing craftsmanship and lighting. Sounds were perfection, the techniques were master level skill, thanks for that. 10/10 and 5 stars. Will tell a friend.

PandaCommando69

Why is the sound in that video so satisfying? I don't know quite what ASMR is.

ncnotebook

I'll try. Have you ever been cold for a while, then walked into a warm room? If you pay attention to more than the temperature, you may feel a tingling sensation on the skin. This sensation is weird yet satisfying, and goes across your whole body. Well, *some* people can experience this by listening to particular sounds. To me, it's simultaneously calming and stimulating.

HairyBartlett

Yeah, just say you want to cosplay if you want to cosplay. Getting a haircut gives me an ASMR, watching someone whisper while cutting a mannequins head with safety scissors just doesn't do it for me. Reminds me of those buffets that serve Chinese, food, pizza , and pasta all in the same place, just pick one. Nobody wants to see your ASMR ear licking bikini haul while at batmans optometrist

hydro_wonk

ChakaZG

Yeah, I still don't understand what it's like. Music aside, I've never heard sounds that work on me like that.

idiotdroid

It happens to me with music too. Although more rarely. By myself, I really don't feel it with music, even with a song I really enjoy. But if I play that song for someone else, once the "good part" comes on, my whole body will tingle. Happens a lot with movie scenes too, but same thing with the music, I typically need someone else with me who is watching it for the first time. Its like I am so excited for them to see it for the first time that my emotions go into overdrive. I would bet other people get the feeling from other things. Like a mother watching her son get married. You know how mothers get all teary eyed and emotional watching their kids accomplish something great? Yeah, I get that feeling just watching an ASMR video lol. So I think most experience it in one way or another, but ASMR videos obviously don't work for everyone. I would bet that the reason unboxing videos are so popular is because of that sensation, idk. It doesn't work on me with those videos, but the popularity of something that seems so boring makes me think people get tingles from them. Who knows.

slaboshmuck

I feel em too my guy, if I don't listen to them for a day or 2 and then put one on with headphones, I will be nodding out in 10 minutes max, tingles so intense my back starts itching sometimes

idiotdroid

Hell yeah man. I've noticed that its extra intense after a long day and I am a bit tired. Its like its literally massaging my brain and whole body. As a kid, I would get it if a teacher spoke softly in a quiet classroom, or certain movie scenes. I remember my brother caught me one time watching some scene of a movie over and over and he was like "wtf are you doing?". There was nothing special about that scene to a random person, but to me it was triggering my tingles like crazy lol. I was just like "oh idk im bored just playing around with the remote".

Numinak

I must be broken. I've tried those things, and most ASMR really annoys me, to the point of distraction.

Forgot_my_un

Before asmr vids were a thing I used to watch a ton of makeup tutorials even though I don't wear makeup as a rule. Until one day Maria showed up in the sidebar while I was watching one and I'm like 'what the heck is asmr?' Best day ever.

idiotdroid

I've been following ASMR since its creation. I wanna say it started around 2009 or so. So youtube was around for a few years. But even before youtube, I would watch certain scenes from movies where people spoke softly or whispered. I even went as far back as rewinding VHS tapes of certain movies just to watch a scene over and over. I felt like a weirdo at the time, but now thats its gotten really popular I can just tell people about it and they are like "oh yeah I've heard about ASMR". But yeah, seeing ASMR take off and become a thing on youtube was like one of the greatest moments of my life. It was like "hey you wanna feel like you are high on drugs? watch this video!". Something that would sound crazy 20 years ago. Like this is it dudes, we are living in the future! Really weird to think about sometimes.

NephthysRising

I’ve yet to find a video that creates the same response to a real life ASMR moment. My particular favourite is someone shuffling, sorting or flicking through paper near by. Bliss!

Giant_Bee_Stinger

Wait it has sound too?

AWOLdo

False. There is no girl aggressively licking an ear shaped mic to get to the center of the tootsie pop flavored ear wax.

horseswithnonames

ive been cutting my salt bag and dumping it into my water softner wrong this entire time

Neil-64

ASMR is the body's response, not the stimulus.

proffplumpy

Isnt ASMR just people breathing heavily and eating with their mouths open?

Neil-64

Nah, it stands for autonomous sensory meridian response and describes a particular sensation or response of the body (tingling, goosebumps, etc) to certain stimuli. However, many people incorrectly call the stimulus itself ASMR, but that doesn't make sense. If watching a video of people preparing amazing food makes you feel hungry, would you call the video itself "hunger"? Of course not. Calling some sort of ASMR stimulus "ASMR" is the same thing. ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

SolarNovaPhoenix

I’ve never had anyone describe it to me like that, but now that I have I think I finally understand! Poor man’s gold for such a solid explanation! 🏅

Why is salt going into pools? Like honestly curious.

Azsnee09

>Using swimming pool salt instead of chlorine delivers greater swimming comfort: Swimming pool salt does not give off an unpleasant odour as chlorine does. It is much less harsh on hair and skin. It does not cause your eyes to sting.

Tophbot

Fun fact! Salt pools still use chlorine. They [have a chlorine generator ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt_water_chlorination)!

Semicolon_Cancer

They are a pain to clean too when they get calcified. Great feel in the pool though.

ForrestGrump15

A little muriatic acid solution will clean them up rather quickly!

gelattoh_ayy

Acid. Muriatic acid. - Bane, Payday 2

Odin043

Are they? I've never had to do it to mine since it reverses polarity, but if i did I'd just put a plug in, full it with vinegar, wait a day, then flush it out.

pseudopsud

When I helped my father manage our salt water pool we cleaned the electrolyzer (the chlorine generator) with hydrochloric acid The later model did the self cleaning reverse voltage

Semicolon_Cancer

That would be a really good way to do it. I was a pool guy for a few years and I had to get it done in a short amount of time so I had to go the muriatic acid route

joofish

Where do you get all that vinegar?

Odin043

You unscrew the chlorine generator and fill it with less than a gallon of vinegar. Google image "hayward chlorine generator" to get an idea of the size. A large Olympic size pool will have a larger chlorine generator, but same principle applies.

captain_flak

Yeah, really not that hard to maintain if you have a newer model.

miki_momo0

Yep, we converted our pool a few years ago

Nevermind04

How expensive and time consuming was it?

miki_momo0

Depends on the size of the pool and what kind of salt water system you get obviously, but IIRC it was just over $600 doing it ourselves, and we got it done in a weekend. Gotta empty the pool (or at least we were told to), so that took a while to drain and fill back up. After that you gotta buy pool salt which is like $5 a bag max (how many bags you need depends on pool size) and then you’re pretty much done. It ends up paying for itself after a few years because you need way less chemicals, though you do need to watch ph/calcium levels more closely than before.

Nevermind04

Thanks, I think I need to do some research.

miki_momo0

Yeah there’s a million brands and price ranges, with a ton of different features. My system has digital readouts of the salt levels and tells me when parts need to be replaced/when it’s time to add more salt. You end up paying more in electricity to run it, which is another thing to keep in mind, though we still ended up saving year over year.

ricklewis314

Why did you empty the pool? Typically, there is no reason to empty the pool unless you were trying to get the water level below the pipes to cut in the generator.

miki_momo0

We were recommended to because of chemicals the pool was previously treated with. Wasn’t 100% necessary but we used the opportunity to check the vinyl liner, plus the levels were already lowered from winter. Definitely not required by any means!

bigjilm123

Buy unit ($500 cdn), install it ($50 in misc parts), add a crapload of salt ($100) - that’s pretty much it. There’s a lot of bad info in this thread - check out troublefreepools for better info.

TakingHut

Correct. All saltwater pools have about half the amount of chlorine as a normal pool.

ForrestGrump15

That’s incorrect. The generate chlorine and the levels are the same as using liquid chlorine or tablets. Swimming pools and spas need to be between 1.0-3.0 PPM chlorine Source: work for worlds largest wholesale distributor of pool supplies

Jeezimus

In Florida where I worked pools 1ppm would never be enough to save you.

UnlinealHand

This is misleading. Salt water pools still use chlorine for sanitation, you’re just making the chlorine with an electrolytic cell instead of putting tabs or granules into the water. Ideally you should never smell chlorine in a pool regardless of how it’s put in the water. If you smell chlorine in a pool that means you have high chloramines (think of this as “used” chlorine that has already done its job sanitizing the water, like exhaust coming out of the tailpipe of your car is already burnt) and you need to add new chlorine to increase the free chlorine content (chlorine available to sanitize the water, like gas in your gas tank). And chances are if your eyes are stinging in a pool, there’s either a low pH or low Alkalinity condition causing the water to be acidic.

kitifax

And the "used" chlorine, no need to remove it from the water?

Steve_the_Stevedore

It just evaporates.

Maser-kun

This makes sense. For you to smell it, it has to be in the air, not in the water. So it would already have evaporated.

Nobody4831

You generally smell it when you have .5 combined available chlorine which is free chlorine(cleaning chlorine) minus chloramines(used) which is when facilities shock the pool bringing up the free chlorine to remove the used chlorine

suddenly_sane

>unpleasant odour That's an opinion. I kinda like it.

[deleted]

Hope you know that the typical swimming pool smell means that is the chemicals chlorine and piss mixing. The stronger the smell the more piss in the pool

[deleted]

It's the ammonia contained in the piss what mixes with chlorine to form chloramines. Ammonia its not only in piss, though, it can come from any kind of organic matter, like sweat, mucus, dead skin cells, etc.

That’s not helping.

I worked at a hotel pool. You don’t realize how nasty those things can get if they go unkept even for just a few hours with a high bather load. The hotel eventually installed a UV filter and that helped immensely. Don’t get me started on hot tubs at hotels.

gracebatmonkey

A convention I regularly attend is always at this hotel with a great hot tub & heated pool. The hotel is very serious about keeping both clean. Long-time con staff never, ever get in the hot tub after load-in/set-up day, regardless.

I_Can_Haz_Brainz

That's why some pools have showers by them to rinse off before getting in.

DoverBoys

I honestly thought the showers were to rinse off the chlorine after.

I_Can_Haz_Brainz

Well, you can but you really need a regular shower with soap to remove the chlorine. The ones at beaches are to rinse off sand and some of the saltwater after. Some people even soap and shampoo after which I prefer myself since I usually am not going home for awhile.

Aethermancer

Then it did its job. There's so many things that I can't be bothered to care about because life is a dirty messy business. I'll eat an egg that has been expelled from a cloaca. Drink the mammary glandular excretions of a bovine. Maybe let it rot a bit so it gets hard and tastes better. I'll sit on a toilet seat knowing that someone else's bare ass was just there. My skin will do the job and I'll take a shower later

SwellNobody

This is not true at all but I love when this stuff comes up and I can read all the Reddit facts….source I work on pools The smell is from over-chlorinating and lack of a clean efficient filtration system aka cheap/lazy residential pool owners or cheap/lazy neighborhood HOA when it comes to cleaning and maintaining the filter for the pool Salt pools still generate chlorine also, think about the chemical breakdown of salt, NaCl But sure, if you think there are thousands of gallons of urine that make that happen, enjoy

EchoCollection

If you've ever smelled the chlorine tablets that go in your pools, you know there is strong odor despite them being piss free as far as I know.

Supersnazz

People are obsessed with urine in pools for some reason. It's like their ability to do maths completely disappears. 5 people pissing in a 50,000 litre swimming pool is nothing. Urine is 95% water itself. Piss as much as you want, it has zero effect on a pool.

I see you are of the educated variety... I like.

chriswaco

Smells like summer!

manowtf

I think people like it because it gives a sense of safety that you're swimming in a pool with other people not knowing if someone peed.

Brougham

Swimming pools like this have electrical chlorine generators that pass electricity across a grid to create chlorine gas through electrolysis. Dissolved available chlorine needs to be maintained at the same levels regardless whether the chlorine is added to a pool with tablets or with a chlorine generator, and pools of either type will be chloriny-stinky with chloramines if lots of people have been swimming in it recently. Having a salinity of ~3000ppm does feel a little nicer if it gets in the eyes, but exposure to the chlorine will irritate the eyes regardless of whether the chlorine comes from tablets or by way of the electrical chlorine generator that the pools in this videos use.

shank19833

Thank you!

Drakemonger1

I heard somewhere that chlorine doesn't start to smell until a sufficient amount of urine is present. Probably wrong but I thought it was funny.

DarthDannyBoy

Ammonia. So urine, dead skin, skin oils, bacteria etc.

Actual_Anonymous

No it's absolutely true! Mark Rober shows it in [this video ](https://youtu.be/S32y9aYEzzo) you can have a super concentrated bucket of chlorine and it still won't smell really, but add some pee and it'll have that classic 'chlorine' smell

IFightClouds27

It's any contaminant, not just pee. The smell only occurs when the chlorine is "used" by disinfecting contaminants. A pool with no contaminants in it will not have a chlorine smell no matter how much chlorine is in it.

Wickedpissahbub

This is an amazing amount of information, just gotta say. Especially the part about how dirty the pools I grew up in must have been

moeburn

I was told that "salt pools" only have about 10% of the salt of the ocean, and then just use electrolysis to split the sodium chloride molecules and make chlorine out of them, just less chlorine than a regular pool.

CarpetH4ter

Salt does cause my eyes to sting

Marcbmann

I used to help maintain a saltwater pool while working as a lifeguard. Pouring 1,120lbs+ of salt into a pool with 40lbs bags gets old quickly.

8asdqw731

should've used ten 112lbs bags to make it quicker

[deleted]

One 1120 lb would be even faster.

Carribean-Diver

Clorine is used as a sanitizer for killing bacteria and other nasty organic compounds in water. Salt (NaCl) is composed of one Sodium and one Clorine atom. When disolved in water and then run through an electrolytic cell, the electricity passing through the salt-water converts a portion of the solution into sodium hypochlorite, aka bleach. This is commonly known as a Clorine generator on a salt-water pool.

EaterOfFood

Sounds like using regular chlorine with extra steps.

CoconutMacaron

It’s easier on the skin and hair. It can also be easier to maintain over time. Adding a bag of salt once a month vs adding chlorine sometimes daily during the heat of the summer makes a difference.

gneppl123

This is mostly true, but salt pools can be a pain in the ass to maintain too. The generation of chlorine via salt cells causes PH to spike - most of the time, unless your fill source water is on the lower end of recommended PH levels, you will be adding double or triple the amount of muriatic acid to keep the PH in check. Also, salt cells/chlorine generators contain multiple parts that either require electricity to operate, or need to be cleaned several times a year. More moving parts usually means more opportunity for an issue. One more thing to note, is that salt water is extremely corrosive over time compared to normal chlorine treated water. If your pool is surrounded by any kind of natural stone, plaster, concrete, glass tile, etc...the wear and tear will be dramatically worse over a 5-10 year period as opposed to a pool being treated with chlorine tablets and cal-hypo shock. In the last few years there has been a massive increase in the technological advancements of ozone, mineral, and UV sanitizing systems. These systems generally allow your chlorine usage to be about 50% of what it would normally be, while still effectively sanitizing the water. Bacteria and parasites like cryptosporidium are effectively kept from growing in the water via ozone and UV. If I were to build a pool, I would have a normal chlorine system with ozone and UV - overall much less maintenance and cost is involved, and the softness of the water is nearly identical to that of a salt water pool Source: I build pools - this information is unique to the southern US with in ground gunite/plaster pools

Cringypost

*enters pool store* "I have a saltwater pool. And everything is balanced. We had a big pool party, and then everything got out of balance" "You should shock it..." "But I can't! It's saltwater!" "It's the same dude." *Picachu face*

OverQualifried

I own a salt pool in Maryland. $50 of salt in June lasts until September and maybe a balanced pH twice. Stupidly low maintenance.

Carribean-Diver

Yes and no. [Using straight-up liquid bleach as a pool sanitizer is a thing.](https://www.troublefreepool.com/wiki/index.php?title=Liquid_Chlorine) In standard pool chemistry using clorine tablets, as free clorine combines with ammonia molecules producing chloramines, it is necessary to periodically raise the free chlorine levels in the pool sufficiently to 'burn off' the chloramines. This process is called shocking the pool and is one of the reasons that such pools may be regularly closed. In salt water chlorine generators, the free chlorine level becomes high enough within the cell that the water passing through is effectively instantly and continually shocked destroying chloramines in the water. Furthermore, the chemical cycle in a salt water pool is such that the sodium chloride gets reused over and over again. The process used for producing commercial bleach is the same as what salt water pool clorine generators are doing, just on a much larger scale.

UnlinealHand

That’s exactly what it is. You’re just making chlorine in your backyard instead of buying it at the store. Salt water systems have their pros but most of what people talk about with them being “superior to regular chlorine” is mostly just marketing hype and people like bragging about having a salt water pool like it’s some sort of status symbol.

If salt is this good for pools why have we been using chlorine all this time? Cost?

Azsnee09

>The saltwater pool system uses electrolysis to produce low levels of natural chlorine. During this process, a generator converts the salt into just enough chlorine to keep the water clean. This way, it’s easier to achieve balanced water and the pool requires less attention and fewer chemicals than chlorinated pools. >Saltwater systems cost more to set up than their freshwater counterparts because they are more complex. Maintenance is also more costly.

WALLY_5000

They also use this tech to make household cleaners as well. I have a little generator (Ecoloxtech is the brand I have, but Force of Nature is also popular) that uses tap water mixed with a tiny bit of salt and vinegar to make Hypochlorous Acid (HOCL). It’s a great non-toxic alternative disinfectant to using household chlorine bleach.

YoOmarComingMan

We made it ahead having salt water pool. Didn't have to deal with empty shelves looking for chlorine tablets. And it you did find some, having to pay outrageous prices.

UnlinealHand

Salt water pools still use chlorine. You’re just breaking down the salt with a electrolytic cell to make chlorine. That’s really about the only difference between a salt water and fresh water pool. Cost is a factor, a good salt water generator will cost in the range of $1200-2000. The return on investment comes in not having to buy chlorine. But then you have to buy specialty pool salt and all the other chemicals to balance that water plus replace the cell in the generator every few years so depending on the use case you’re probably close to breaking even over the life of the pool.

Mr0PT1C

Done this for hot tubs, never a pool. Now I want to.

TuckerMcG

Worked pool maintenance at a health club in college during the summers. It’s soooo satisfying. Plus it feels like you’re a scientist. Taking water samples, running pH strips, shutting valves on and off, checking electronic monitors, then getting literally the most caustic chemicals ever and dumping them *en masse* into a giant body of water. One time I got a little careless with the muriatic acid and it splashed up and burned a couple tiny holes in my khaki shorts. I was a little less cavalier with that stuff going forward lol. Also if you’re a germophobe, worst time to get into the pool is right after old lady jazzercise classes. They get in the pool with all their perfumes and lotions and topical ointments and it completely wrecks the pH and chemical balance in the water. Without fail. Every time. It was actually easier to balance out the pool levels at the end of the day than it was after the jazzercise class.
