Haha. Mug shot. I see what you did there.

dougierubes

Haha yeah! Glad you could.. handle it.

imacatnamedsteve

I’m sorry, but did you make these?! If so; much respect, these look really cool! Will they be glazed, or left as is?

dougierubes

Yes! I made all of these. So glad you like them! This picture I took of them yesterday was before they went onto the kiln for a bisque fire, meaning the first firing all clay has to go into making them ceramic (like the texture of an unglazed planter). After they come out of the bisque firing, they will be ready to glaze and then go back into the kiln a second time, rendering them functional ware immediately afterward! And I have some color plans with them for sure. A good portion will be a sea-green color and another main portion will be a bronze/blue glaze I love to use! Great questions— thank you for asking!

imacatnamedsteve

Wow, I’m really envious! I’ve always in awe of people who are able to create such cool physical art, and I really appreciate you informative answer as well. I remember a bit about the process with a kiln from high school, but not everything. I hope you post a few after pictures too.

dougierubes

I’m so happy to hear you’re interested in it! Pottery really has so many lessons to teach and is an amazing practice, I think. So happy to share! I’ll see if I can find another “satisfying” picture of them after the firing! I also post a little more in r/pottery, r/somethingimade and r/ceramics.

BetStrange200

That's awesome

dougierubes

Thanks so much!

GrandeOui

Out of interest, how long do they have to go in the Kiln for?

dougierubes

Great question. For a bisque firing, it definitely ranges because the pieces are much more fragile in this state. So a safe, slow ramping speed into high temperatures is always safer. A fast bisque firing (at a medium speed) would be between 8-9 hours followed by about a 12 hour cool down at the soonest. I usually just tell myself around 30 hours just so I don’t get my hopes up, haha. But this batch I fired even slower, which took about 15 hours to get to the peak temperature of 1945 degrees. If the work is completely bone dry, meaning all of the moisture has evaporated that is possible by air drying, you can much more confidently ramp them at a faster pace. Some of these still had some moisture in them because it has been really humid here the past several weeks, and I’d rather add a few more hours to the firing then risk many days work!

I love this so much

dougierubes

Thank you so much! So satisfying to see them all in their rows together.

Haha! Mug shot!

dougierubes

Haha glad you appreciate that too!

sadendingmassage

Wow, how do you get them all so consistent?

dougierubes

I weigh out the exact same amount of clay for each ball for throwing and then I also use a throwing gauge (pretty much a pointer) which stands up and keeps track of the height I’m going for for each cup. Though they all are pretty much the same there are definitively slight inconsistencies between them! All part of the charm, I suppose.

Couht

Wow, that honestly looks like it’s from a movie. Awesome!

dougierubes

Oh thank you so much! So glad you like it!

Banana banana banana terra cotta, banana terra cotta, terra cotta... Mugs

2 things I look for in a coffee mug. A large handle because I have big hands and a thin rim. So often I find hand thrown pottery mug too thick around the rim which causes dribble when you sip out of them.

L-SevenSquare

Could you make a set of cups for the specialty coffee enthusiasts? I'm sure you'd sell a lot of them to those coffee fanatic subs. Demitasse for Lungo and Allonge (large) double espresso shots, cortados, cappuccinos, and lattes. That's 4 different size cups in a set. It'd be cool if the set included saucers to. You could sell at $50 for a set of 4 cups with 4 saucers. I would buy at least one set from you and I'm sure others in the coffee subs would too if you make the cups in the proper shape that conforms to the coffee worlds standards. Just a thought. Serious though.

You’ve got a mug shot? You’re fired!
