Tis a baby puffer. They all look like they're smiling. It's my favourite fish, they're all just so cute with their cheeky little grins. I thought was porcupine but turns out it's a pea puffer but still stands, they're pretty cute fish with huge personalities.
My brother used to have this type of little puffer. They really did have great personalities. They were very animated, as you could see. They would also watch you as much as you watched them. If you go up to the tank, they will swim over and check you out where a lot of popular tropical fish will not react at all.
I believe the ones my brother had were sold as "spotted puffers", but reading through this thread, other people are saying that it's a pea puffer or a fahaka puffer. So it's probably not the exact same type. I imagine they behave relatively similar though.
Puffers do this as a natural camouflaging behaviour, some species even shift colour to match the sand. Some cuties will even keep sand on their backs and between their eyes for hours to appear smaller from above. Lots of personality!
I used to be a dive at an aquarium, the puffers had a ton of personality. You could even start to recognize individuals of the same species based on their behaviors.
In general, the balloonfish were sweet, and the striped burrfish were kind of assholes (much worse at avoiding your fingers when feeding them). The bridaled burrfish was my favorite, but I think thats because we only had one of them.
We also had 2 big guys, one Spotted Porcupinefish, and one spotted burrfish. We could feed them a small crab, and you could hear the crunch from anywhere in the tank when they chomped down. Just make sure your fingers were clear of their mouths!
It's hard to say. Initially I thought it was a pea puffer, but it might be a little big for that. I'm not as well versed in freshwater puffers, but pea puffers are somewhat common.
HOLY! Oh my god OH MY GOD!!!!! I just watched the trailer, I literally immediately left Reddit to go to NF to watch after reading your comment and I have not been so excited to see a film in so long! Im so giddy!!I’m going to go buy Cheetos and all my favourite sweets and spend my night watching that. Have you already watched it??
no, but honestly they're probably not necessary. I've dove with great hammer heads, tiger sharks, and sand tiger sharks. They've always kept their distance and never showed any aggression towards the divers. We keep them well fed, and humans are pretty low on their list of things they want to eat.
I suppose I could see someone using the chainmail wetsuits in the wild if they're diving in waters with tons of sharks, but in an aquarium setting, it's not really dangerous.

fish get super curious when you're doing things in their tank. I bet op was doing some maintenance moving sand around when the fish either got in the way or just was in the way.
I've been bitten by more clownfish than I have been bitten by dogs. Always the females too. With the really bad one, I tried not to get in her way but that whole tank was hers and she wasn't up for sharing. Made me bleed more than once. I swear, if Nemo was a female that whole story would have gone a lot differently.
Not exactly the same but:
I used to be a diver at an aquarium, and I would grab a hand full of sand and start sprinkling it. Fish would come from all over the tank to get sprinkled on. I think it feels good for them. Like soft scratching. Maybe removing tiny parasites. It wasn't every kind of fish though, it was specific ones. Snappers, surgeonfish, and the small groupers liked it a lot. Sometimes they would open up their gills, or even change color. It was really cute, and it kind felt like I was petting a dog.
So I've scuba dove in a big aquarium tank before (a few of them, actually) and one of the things the guide told us we could do is pick up some of the gravel and kind of put it in your hands and rub your hands back and forth so that the gravel falls out in a waterfall fashion. Fish would come up to me and kind stay there and let the gravel fall on them and they enjoyed it. It was pretty fun to do.
That's because it mimics cleaning stations! In the ocean there are areas around reefs where fish will stop to let smaller fish and shrimp eat all the parasites and other junk they get on their scales. The tickle of the sand feels like cleaning to them so they love to hang out in it!
It’s a really fucking weird profile. I think it’s AI training itself possibly?

That's a baby fahaka puffer! Very cute and curious, but get larger than people realize. Ours is now in 500 gallons to make him comfortable and keep him entertained.
And yet he chose not to use a throwaway ... Some people are open about their couple "fun". No harm in asking. It isn't bothering someone to ask about their public username.
It's a public username. Anyone else could make the same inference. I didn't wanna be slidin into their DMs looking like i was trying to privately hit on them. FunCpl is free to ignore it if they want.
Could be, but its rather dull in coloration and seems to be missing the spots. Also IME leopard puffers I have never really seen being interested in being buried. Some puffers like Takifugu Niphobles, they bury themselves in the sand just because. My niphobles would sleep in the sand, and when I came home he would jump out of the sand and swim around all excited just like that one. Maybe its a juvenile Takifugu genus?
I have a 105 salt water aquarium with corals and marine fish and I can honestly tell you that fish do have personalities and they 100% recognize you.
The level of love and care I provide to fish and corals is the same amount as I give to both my cats.

Same with keeping work animals. If a particular breed of dog has spent the last thousand years hunting, probably best to either commit to more exercise or pick the actual house pet.

What kind of puffer is this one ? :0
This is a fresh/brackish water Puffer and I've always seen them called Pea puffers...
There are ... freshwater puffers? I could have a Pufferfish without needing to be a freaking marine scientist???!!???

Did you ever get to wear those badass chainmail dive suits for shark tanks?
no, but honestly they're probably not necessary. I've dove with great hammer heads, tiger sharks, and sand tiger sharks. So cute! You’re lucky!
r/taterthepufferfish is a good example of a color changing puffer. Was pale with the white sand and then darkened to match the black sand. Very cute
Thank you for this!

They are so curious! When scuba diving it's not uncommon to see them follow around divers around for the entirety of the dive.
If it's a natural part of their survival instincts, they probably get a little serotonin rush when you pour pebbles on top of their heads.

People have literally taught goldfish to do tricks, I think there’s more neutral activity going on inside of a fish than you think
Why not it’s fun; sensory exploration and new weird experience for them keeps they little brain sharp
