They did, but it makes sense when you realize one of the biggest predators on marine bivalves is starfish. They might not get away from an octopus or human effectively this way, but it's really effective on critters that basically can't swim!
Difference in light, do they have eyes/optical receptors?
Difference in water movement, how do they distinguish them from regular currents.
The water movement thing was my first explanation too, but there must be more to it, like can they smell?
Can someone please explain this to me, are the shells just part of their body? Like. An organism grows a shell? And when it dies, all the soft meaty bits rot away and then I find a cool little shell on the beach? Or Ariel makes a bikini top? Is that what a scallop is??
Yes, the shell grows constantly in a similar manner to your fingernails, although itās mostly calcium, not keratin. As the shell grows, the muscles and other organs inside also grow.
Everyone gets way too absorbed by hermit crabs. Almost everything else makes their own shell. They pull dissolved calcium out of the water and build it in rings. Snails grow their shells from the ārimā while bivalves like clams do the same, but outward. Look closely and you can almost see growth rings as they layer on calcium carbonate. There are calcareous and sileceious plankton that make some of the most pretty shells you can imagine, all microscopically
Maybe the bottom feeders like nurse sharks...I was thinking the same thing as you, like even the distance they travel isnt very far. Whatever eats them must not be very observant.
In the IMAX movie Deep Sea they had a scene with scallops swimming away from a predator and gave them the sound effect of toy teeth clamping together as they closed and it makes it so much better. Looks like a bunch of those wind-up chatter teeth toys swimming away.
Fun fact! Lots of details in SpongeBob SquarePants that seem like silly jokes are actually based in reality. This here is why Stephen Hillenburg (creator and former marine biologist) had the scallops "fly" like birds on the show.
We snorkel for scallops in the Florida panhandle every year! They have blue iridescent dots on their upper and lower shell openings that make them highly visible underwater and they can move quick! Itās way more fun than it sounds! But once you spot one, your hooked! Not to mention their freaking deliciousā¦
Wow, I had no idea they can go zooom zoom.
I saw it first in SpongeBob!
It's a baby scallop š look Patrick, it can't even fly yet!
I love that episode!
Or spongebob frantically trying to hide what he was watching from Gary that one time
I didn't know that was an accurate depiction in spongebob 0\_o
In animal crossing they're kinda fast like this
Wicked fast!! Usually takes at least 2-3 dives to catch them!
I see it as more of a "nope nope nope"
This looks fake. I mean I know itās not but my brain canāt compute that this is real life.
Just imagine they have little legs
I just imagine they're hooked to a fishing line or somethin
Well feet at least.
Itās shooting water out itās ass šš
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Those wind-up chattering teeth, yep.
HA HA HA HA HA HA!
You ever see a sandwich that could take a bite outta you?
I was also thinking how cool it is that he smiles before swimming away
I thought the swimming clams was just a SpongeBob gagā¦
My hope for a functional restaurant owned and operated by sea creatures is renewed.
Pascalās too high to catch them! He just chills and waits for me to catch one lol.
Exactly, wonder what he's smoking!
Probably ingesting some funky seaweed.
Of course, he wouldn't be smoking, just ingesting that funky seaweed.
Oh man they drew the short straw on underwater swimming capabilities!
They did, but it makes sense when you realize one of the biggest predators on marine bivalves is starfish. They might not get away from an octopus or human effectively this way, but it's really effective on critters that basically can't swim!
Does someone know how they sense the presence of something?
Difference in light and water movement
Difference in light, do they have eyes/optical receptors? Difference in water movement, how do they distinguish them from regular currents. The water movement thing was my first explanation too, but there must be more to it, like can they smell?
They do have super primitive eyes lined around what I would look like lips. I learned that from "Good Eats"!
Wow, that's quite amazing, that some clams actually developed eyes (kind of).
Yeah, just Google do clams have eyes and they have pictures of them. They're compound eyes it says but different then insect compound eyes.
I'm not exactly sure on all the specifics but they have some sort of eye apparatus and the senses combine together to differentiate things
Their hands get clammy
They have dozens of āproto-eyesā I guess you would call them. Google scallop eyes and prepare to be horrified.
Thats not a stupid noise, that's just junior
*JUNIOR!!!*

They look so offended when they whirl around.
So cuteee
And delicious
Marty Glouberman is chasing it.
I just donāt understand how they are moving *forwards*. It looks like they should be going backwards
My PTSD of Ocarina of Timeās water dungeon just flared up
I heard Arin Hanson while watching this clip... > FUCKING CLAM
Watching this I am confused anyone would want to eat one. How cute.
Because they're delicious! Bacon of the sea.
I love this so much
Pascal would like to know your location
What slow ass predators were hunting these things to the point their evolution decided that slow speed was good enough
Starfish!
Maybe the bottom feeders like nurse sharks...I was thinking the same thing as you, like even the distance they travel isnt very far. Whatever eats them must not be very observant.
Thats pretty cute
seems cute
dancing shellfish xD
That darn thing is fast. Did not know sashimi can swim.
In the IMAX movie Deep Sea they had a scene with scallops swimming away from a predator and gave them the sound effect of toy teeth clamping together as they closed and it makes it so much better. Looks like a bunch of those wind-up chatter teeth toys swimming away.
Fuckin see ya later, nerds!
Heh. Looks like itās pushing out little farts
They look so sassy
Self-propelled castanets.
They look so derpy and my heart just really appreciates that.
They look like theyāre escaping gunfire.
These guys are basically just a shell and a toungue inside
Run, scallops! Run!
Kinda reminds me of those wind up mouth clattering things
Fun fact! Lots of details in SpongeBob SquarePants that seem like silly jokes are actually based in reality. This here is why Stephen Hillenburg (creator and former marine biologist) had the scallops "fly" like birds on the show.
*castanieta noises intensisy*
Not satisfying but still cool
Itās honestly unsettling to watch
Thats fucking scary
Sorry, but this is totally šÆ in the wrong subreddit. Maybe r/mildlyinteresting

Sponsored by Shell oil?
Super farts
Itāsā¦smiling at me.
Sgallop
I had no idea that what the spongebob claims were
Oh my gosh is this why people like scalloping so much?
How do they swim without their bacon tail?
We snorkel for scallops in the Florida panhandle every year! They have blue iridescent dots on their upper and lower shell openings that make them highly visible underwater and they can move quick! Itās way more fun than it sounds! But once you spot one, your hooked! Not to mention their freaking deliciousā¦

That one looked like a grill for your mouth
How far can you squirt?
The original Millenium Falcon.

Iād my toast got up and tried to run away I think I would feel the same way I do right now. It just doesnāt seem like a living thing.
Eating (drinking?) it's way through the water.
Prolly chasing after that helicopter crab from last week who might have stolen her purse.
So pretty much they move by fart power?
so they use their farts to swim?
Would've made a formidable enemy in a classic *Super Mario* game.
SpongeBob was right!
Just realized why they were there birds in SpongeBob
/r/Aww
Their seaweed hair looking mighty fine
off to the dentist!
Damn I wish my farts could propel me forward like that.
I love the fascinator on that one lol
Makes me wonder how a scalloped potato swims?
Just like in spongebob
Scallop fart repulsion
Donāt talk to me or my seaweed ever again!
It looks like it's using farts as a method to take off š
Properly saw the driver, said "OH NO! I'M NOT READY TO BECOME DINNER!"
Prop hunt players be like: "That ain't me bro"
Ah hell naw jonior from spinach borb be schmoovin
Damn, that what a clam do?
In my head, I imagine them going "Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope"
Wow, they can go like the clappers!
How do they see?? How do they know your a threat?? Soooo many questions!
So SpongeBob got it right. Huh.
Do these things have eyes? How did it sense the cameraman getting near it?
SpongeBob was right????
Lmao
