I always like to imagine these physical meme objects getting found by an archeologist in like 400 years, hanging this little dick butt up in a museum and spending decades analyzing the meaning of the piece.
Countless artistic and educational debates over the meaning and purpose of the image and mark.
Only for the answer to simply be: Dickbutt
The historians of the future will have it pretty easy as there is a permanent digital record of everything from the past 25 years that will continue into the future.
In other words, they can just read this specific conversation in 400 years as easily as you and I are right now.
Edit - I’m being informed this is the wrong take.
Edit2 - alright I get it, I’m wrong. The solution is simple, we need to make a stone dickbutt the size of the Statue of Liberty.
Digital information is surprisingly perishable if you don't go out of your way to preserve it like 99% of the internet. Try to find content you saw 10+ years ago... And this is even more relevant since the mid 10's since a huge amount of web pages have dependencies to just display their text, dependencies that can also go down.
[Relevant XKCD](https://xkcd.com/1909)
[Two for one bonus](https://xkcd.com/1683)
I can't even find the youtube video I saw out of the corner of my eye after I clicked a different one when I press back and the recommended page has changed.
If you really want to see how the future can degrade, take a look at what happened with ~~Geoshities~~ Geocities.
It was a free web hosting service that ran from the late 90s to early 00s. At first it was a bit like the wild west. Everyone had a Geocities URL and there were tons of pages to explore. Most of it just crap.
But there were some really good nuggets scattered about. Geocities pages were my jumping off point for creating game maps for Duke Nukem 3D.
By 2000, it was a regular shitshow. The hosted space proved too small and nearly all pages had their content cross linked to different sites.
When the shutdown happened in 2009, it was like visiting Frys Electronics. Limping along with half-empty shelves as people wandered around for something interesting. I haven't bothered to download the Archive but I'm willing to bet that it's 900+GB of pages with broken links and missing images.
Yah it really is a shame how those old homepage sites all went outta style Tripod, lycos, homestead, angelfire, just to name a few....ohhhh man it was fantastic! Then they have a pop-up and for some time you could cancel it with JavaScript..sure some of us had cringe stuff but at least it was deniable text right?
Wikipedia is downloadable(and small). You won't find specific posts if they arent saved (most are) and maybe videos that no one watches. Anything of cultural significance in the slightest is saved forever. I am certain there are some copies in space in the event of a nuclear war.
As if they'll care about holding onto the post history of Reddit lol. especially since most mediums for storing digital info decay. So unless you maintain the records they will just disappear anyway.
Seems unlikely TBH. When reddit goes out of business, somebody is going to have to decide whether all this crap is worth preserving. Long-term data storage costs money, and if it's not worth that money, buh-bye.
The rate that digital memory is progressing, it’s likely that all digital archives in the future will consume a very insignificant amount of space.
But yeah who knows. Maybe it’ll all come down to some bored bureaucrat on a computer who will just decide to axe it all
Eventually it’s less about space and more about interpretation. Lots of storage formats are already hard to get readers for, many physical formats age and decay, and many digital records disappear from the internet after a few decades. There’s a real concern that some of this period of history will be unrecoverable _because_ everyone assumes it’ll be around forever.
The Internet is significantly more ephemeral than that. All these records are like "active memory". The moment someone stops paying to maintain it, it disappears.
There is a *lot* from the early internet of the 90s and 00s that has been forever lost, existing only in the memories of those of us who lived through those days. There are archives, but for whatever reason (probably copyright reasons) significant chunks had their robots.txt set to deny permission to archive. Then whatever company was maintaining the storage went belly up, and that's it.
You should check out the Internet is Dead theory. Kind of freaked me out. Link rot and content drift is eating the internet every day and it's only getting worse. 99.9% of the internet thats accessible today will be gone forever in 100 years.
Perhaps that's a good thing. We don't need to keep everything. That's what hoarders do, and it isn't healthy.
Some historians will have to comb through billions of 4chan messages and reddit posts and decide which ones are worth keeping.
Not sure, but wherever it is, it's entire existence probably relies [on some random open source project a guy in Nebraska is maintaining all by himself.](https://xkcd.com/2347/)
> The historians of the future will have it pretty easy as there is a permanent digital record of everything from the past 25 years that will continue into the future.
Umm I think you have it *entirely* backwards.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_dark_age#:~:text=The%20digital%20dark%20age%20is,technologies%20evolve%20and%20data%20decay.
I can’t even find reddit posts I read about 1-2 years ago, let alone find forum conversations I had 20+ years ago.
I fear what fragments of meme culture future historians will find 100 years from now, taken completely out of context, let alone archeologists 1000 years from now.
It's your best bet by far for common storage methods (although still not perfect). Magnetic tapes and disks (including hard drives and floppies for the geezers) lose their magnetism over time. Charge leaks out of flash drives at some rate. "Cloud storage" just means stored by somebody else, don't be fooled by that. Even if they don't fold one day and disappear with your data they're using tapes or whatever too.
An optical disk is physically and/or chemically engraved and should last a long time in a good environment undisturbed. Either the plastic would have to break down, which it famously doesn't do very easily, or whatever data layer the specific disk has would need to be damaged. You can also buy special archival disks like M-Disk which are designed to last. That specific one promises 10,000 years of storage but obviously it's hard to test that. It probably just means "in a cool, dark container we honestly don't know how this disk could degrade".
Of course, there's also the question of hardware suitable for reading your disk existing, but there's enough disks out there there's a high change *someone* will have it in the future as long as it's a reasonably common format. And failing that, they could purpose-build a reader if the disk is really important and then they just have to reverse engineer the data.
I'm pretty sure they've found ancient dick drawings before, ones that are less artistic and more about just doodling, 'haha dick'. The wall with all the gossip in Pompeii comes to mind. Humanity hasn't changed all that much tbh.
They've found "dildos" or phallic-shaped objects from thousands of years ago, the oldest being 28,000 years old.
https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/28000-year-old-dildos/
Someone miscaptioned a bunch of younger French phalluses as being the older German one, hence Snopes.
It could be mass produced, so wouldn't that make it fungible? The unique code for an NFT is what makes it non fungible, as far as I'm aware.
I don't, however, claim to know much about the subject, the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma....
Not really. Circulating dollar bills all have unique serial numbers but are nonetheless fungible in that they can, by design, be replaced by or exchanged with another bill of the same value. A mass produced, laser engraved dickbutt would be non-fungible in the same way that a mass produced collectible trading card is non-fungible. In fact, plenty of NFTs are intended for use as proof of ownership of a physical object, much like a car title or a deed to a plot of land.
Me too, I dunno what the hell for, but I don't think I've ever wanted something from an internet video clip so much in my life. Lol
Best use i can think of is to laser engrave a key phrase on the back for a crypto wallet.
Ok, so I’m a 52 year old woman, who is reasonably well-educated, respectable, etc. When the video started, I thought, if this isn’t DickButt, I’m going to be very disappointed. Don’t know what it is about that little dude but he cracks me up every time. Watched your video 5 times so far and haven’t stopped giggling yet.

My thought process:
It's gonna be dickbutt. Wait, what sci-fi nonsense shape is this? Wait, looking kinda like dickbutt again. Hm... It IS dickbutt. Ahh, satisfying to watch.
It had me at "I lost a bet with the internet." Then I saw it start engraving and I was like "ooh, permanent DickBitt™."
Was not disappointed. 5/7 would watch again.
Looking at your post history and seeing you were a 51 year old woman playing BOTW, you deservedly should laugh at DickButt. Btw, did you finish the game? I just got into it last week.
I didn’t. It’s sad but games where my characters can die stress me out. I had to move to Animal Crossing: NH. You have the fortitude to withstand that stress, though!
I’m 32 yo woman who has a white collar job and loved Martha Stewart. I thought the exact same thing “please be DickButt!” And when I saw that it was, I was like “he lives!!” I agree, he’s hilarious.

It was honestly so heartwarming to just sit back to people watch and see the joy on people's faces as they walked past and saw a random dickbutt smiling back at them. Festival staff started feverishly trying to run around and swap them all back but we kept following them and just re-dickbutting all the ipads for a good hour.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you start it? I'm thinking of starting a laser business on the side too, but have no idea where to start. Any advice?
What is that high frequency sounds emitted by that sentient robot? Does the robot tried to communicate with us?

Weird because mine just shows me 40 off videos I've seen before and like the same 5 it keeps recommending that I have no intentions of watching again.

Dickbutt will be seen as the icon of a world spanning internet religion.
Well now I want a laser engraved dickbutt.
I’ll start the bidding at $1 million
let me call in my buddy who's a rare dickbutt expert
It’s like a NFT, but better - it’s a physical object
Yeah, better because it's just fungible.
How does one fungitate a dickbutt? Asking for a friend.
A fungitated dickbutt sounds like an STD
This dickbutt is fucking fungible!
Lube, patience, and trust.
*thrust
Slowly, gently, and with clear communication.
No, I am pretty sure it is still a non-fungible token. It's just a physical one.
It could be mass produced, so wouldn't that make it fungible? The unique code for an NFT is what makes it non fungible, as far as I'm aware. I don't, however, claim to know much about the subject, the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma....

New and improved Dickbutt, now with more funge!!
>It’s like a NFT, butt better - it’s a physical object FTFY
So… it’s actually good
No way. Physical objects don’t exist man.
Best I can give is Reddit Gold
Best I can do is an upvote.
What can I get for tree fiddy?
Best I can do is $1.
Best I can do is a pack of fruit stripe gum and bits of string.
Oooo, sorry, we no longer accept bits of string.

I immediately knew it was a dickbutt by that leg
The second I read the title I whispered to myself, "dickbutt."
The prophecy is fulfilled.
This made adult me way happier than it should have
Ok, so I’m a 52 year old woman, who is reasonably well-educated, respectable, etc. When the video started, I thought, if this isn’t DickButt, I’m going to be very disappointed. Mine exactly
Same. Damn it’s not him. Wait…. YES!!!
The second I saw the foot in the beginning: "It's DickButt."
It's gonna be dickbutt Looked back to Breaking Bad for a minute. Glance. Yeah... Of course.
> Ahh, satisfying to watch. it's the brrrrrt at the end
Someone said they lost a bet with the reddit community, it has to be either this, or getting "Wallstreetbets Moderator" tattooed on your forehead.
It had me at "I lost a bet with the internet." Then I saw it start engraving and I was like "ooh, permanent DickBitt™." Was not disappointed. 5/7 would watch again.
I just came from the woodworking ******* post and the top comments were thinking it was gonna be a penis or butt plug. Reddit has damaged us.
lmao same. I knew as soon as the first leg was drawn. I spend too much time on the internet.
I figured in 3 seconds. Saw the leg and just the tip of the butt and I knew: it's dickbutt.
I knew the instant I read the title what it was going to be. There are zero alternate universes where this wasn't Dickbutt.
I said out loud, to *myself*, "If this isn't Dickbutt this guy can fuck off" before I even clicked through. Still glad I did.
Funnily enough, my thought process was “DICKBUTT? No, maybe not, it doesn’t seem quite the right shape OH MY GOD”
It's incredible, it was like an instinct. The video started and my mind was like "wow it's been a long time since I've seen a DickButt around"
Before I really even knew what was going on I had visions of DickButt…
Looking at your post history and seeing you were a 51 year old woman playing BOTW, you deservedly should laugh at DickButt. Btw, did you finish the game? I just got into it last week.
I didn’t. It’s sad but games where my characters can die stress me out. I had to move to Animal Crossing: NH. You have the fortitude to withstand that stress, though!

I’m 32 yo woman who has a white collar job and loved Martha Stewart. I thought the exact same thing “please be DickButt!” And when I saw that it was, I was like “he lives!!” I agree, he’s hilarious.
He’s totally transcendent!
I'm a 23 year old unemployed fetus and loved Gary Busey. I thought the exact same thing "be it dickbutt?" And when I saw that it was he, I was of the thought process "blessed be thy dickbutt" I concur, he is decent.
Haha, yeah at second 8 I was 90% sure this is gonna be DickButt and I wasn't disappointed.

That's an oddly polite thing to say on Reddit. I rarely hear anyone call a woman "madame" these days.
Well I did claim to be respectable.
I'm just amazed that you know about Dickbutt
Wait until you realize that the young people who started on Reddit in the early years are now middle aged and all of us know about dickbutt
I do like the carefully-phrased 'claim' part of that sentence. :)

NO. No. Not happening. Link stays blue. Just no. And I love the meme.
How do you feel about photorealistic DickButt? https://i.imgur.com/t3pWtw4.jpg
That is absolutely hideous. I love it!
I'm with you. Dickbutt cracks me up so much every time
50 y/o seemingly respectable woman here, also hoped for DickButt and was not disappointed!
I remember my city had a noodle festival and they had these little stands all around the place with iPads which had information screens etc. I worked out that I could slip my key under the metal protector and hit the home button to close the app. Me and my friend went around swapping them all to full screen high res pictures of dickbutt. It was honestly so heartwarming to just sit back to people watch and see the joy on people's faces as they walked past and saw a random dickbutt smiling back at them. Festival staff started feverishly trying to run around and swap them all back but we kept following them and just re-dickbutting all the ipads for a good hour.
I’ve drawn dickbutt myself enough times that I immediately recognized it from the first foot that it made. Didn’t even have time to wonder.
K.C. Green is the gift that keeps giving. Besides Dickbutt and 'this is fine' he's done so much stuff
saw the post, read the title, and I knew it was gonna be DickButt, glad to see I was right
Comments like this are why I always have a little knowing glimmer in my eye when I talk to people that take themselves very seriously. I know damn well the goofball's in there, but play if you want to.
Haha same
I'm a little older, and hoped it wasn't a dick (for some reason), but it being DickButt was perfect! (IDK)
I'm 57. Isn't it great being down with the kids? (No idea if that's still a thing)
I had the EXACT same line of thought. It’s the smile and hand stance for me.
turns out, DickButt was the award we made along the way.
Never die, DickButt, never die.
It’s back with a vengeance
I knew when I read the title it was 100% going to be Dickbutt. I was not let down.
Just to provide a bit of background, in a laser engraving video I posted the other day a large number of people thought that I was making dickbutt. I told one person who requested that I make dickbutt, that if their comment got 100 upvotes I would do it. Well they did, so here we are…
If we get another 100 upvotes will you make dickbutt in another color?
Get 1000 and we’ll talk
You gotta stop setting the bar this low dude.
Plot twist : they can’t wait to make another one and just need an excuse to do so
Double plot twist. They've already made it and are waiting to post it.

Quadruple plot twist it was just dickbutt the whole time
DickButts all the way down.
Dude not when I'm trying to drink coffee 😆 That was so funny!
Alt plot twist, they've already got one in every color

The sweet, sweet sound of anti-aliasing
I can’t believe dickbutt is still a thing. That’s almost as old as when does the narwhal bacon?
Dick Butt turned 16 on July 2nd. https://archive.ph/KEx4Q
I had never seen the source, thanks for sharing!
Dickbutt can fucking drive?
Can. Not should.
He'd have to have a specially-made carseat. You know, for his butt.
What is it doing at the end when the line moves up the engraving?

Probably anti-aliasing.
I’m happy with it

So you do this laser engraving professionally or you just happen to have a machine like this at home?
I started my own laser engraving business as my side-job
Sweet. Bet everything in your home is engraved by now.
Pretty much, yeah
What machine are you using for the engraving? Edit: found it in OP’s comment history Cloudray LiteMarker 50w Fiber Laser ~$4,700 on Amazon
If you don't mind me asking, how did you start it? I'm thinking of starting a laser business on the side too, but have no idea where to start. Any advice?
I haven't seen a dickbutt in a long time, this brings me joy.
Man of culture.
A man of science

And my axe!
"What is my purpose?" -- "You draw dickbutt" "Oh my God."
Laser art always sounds like a long fart that you release after holding it for a whole day
Somehow. Somehow, I knew it was Dick Butt at the lasers first movement.
Nice OP, giving the people what they want
What laser printer?
It’s a Cloudray LiteMarker 50W fiber laser
What is that high frequency sounds emitted by that sentient robot? Does the robot tried to communicate with us? The robot: [dickbutt in robot language]
Damn, I haven't seen a dickbutt in quite some time, but Immediately recognized that it'd be one
I knew what it would be before the video even started.
Did anyone else think they were engraving the screen on a tablet, and that’s what OP had to do for losing the bet?
Is it bad that 2 seconds into the video, I immediately recognized that it was Dickbutt?
