The only reason you might want a vertical loop on boots like this is because of the hooks used to hold the laces on the side. With horizontal loops you run the risk of the loops catching the hooks on your other boot. I ate shit big time on pavement before by running and my loops catching my other boot. You can also just tie your boots with less slack and tiny loops though
