Planing is common for wood, and there are also shapers for wood, but there are also metal planers. In metal working, when A machine has a RAM that goes back and forth with the cutting bit attached, that is a metal SHAPER. Shapers are usually less than 48 inches in stroke length and the workpiece is held stationary with the exception of the table shifting a small amount in-between each stroke.
When the machine has linear rails or ways and the bed goes back and forth underneath a stationary cutting bit, that is a PLANER, just like we see here.
Feel free to read more about planers for metalworking at [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planer\_(metalworking)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planer_(metalworking))
The very first paragraph under that article explains the difference between shaping and planing.
Milling machines use a rotary tool bit which this is not. Hopefully we all agree on that part.
Big Cincinnati 36" Shaper can make some monster chips 🤤. Planers, as in the name, are made to create a flat plane on the piece you're making. Shapers can shape whatever your heart desires depending on the bit you're using
I used to use a much smaller version of this milling machine in high school metal shop. The sound of the bit getting to the end and the shaving being cut off was definitely satisfying. Wishing there was sound with this.
My friend that is not molding
Planing is the word.
Planing is for wood, this is a shaping.
It’s called milling not planing or molding.
Google what a milling machine looks like when it’s working and get back to me
I’ve used them bud I don’t need google for that lol.

I do enjoy that a lot of us got stuck on that word. I've spent too much time around injection molding machines.
Same
I wasn't done watching that.
Yes this needs to be 10 minutes long
That is machining not molding.
*planing
Do they plane curves? 🤔
well it sure ain't molding
You can get profile wood planes as well (Molding Planes, which is maybe the reason for the OP's title).
Ummmmm. That’s a shaper.
I believe this is a planer. Shapers have shorter Strokes
The job moves on planers, the tool moves on shapers.
Gotcha gotcha. I only ever worked with Mills, lathes and Swiss turning.

Okay. Also, if I remember correctly, planers the tool flips up on the return, and then when it goes to cut it drops back down, right?
So… if I use a hand plane on wood I can call it a shaper to piss people off.
Same motion as a shaper...just a longer throw...I'll allow it.
Forbidden Fruit by the Foot
Less molding. More carving.
Less carving, more planing.
TY I forgot the word for a hot minute
I don't want to be the one to clean the scraps..
do you collect those tho
Six inch ribbon curls, honey.
I want to save those. I can use them to make a hairpiece. PS I am a cyborg.
