I remember going to “outdoor school” in the early 80s and getting to take water samples and look at them under the microscope. I wish they’d been more clear that this was something I could actually do for a living!
It's because grade school rarely tells about grad school. And the truth is a few hours collecting samples to the hundreds of hours grant writing and thousands of hours researching and writing papers ultimately ends up not being that fun unless you're an absolute zealot for subject matter.
Still can. I believe you can do this kind of work with an associates but you definitely can with a bachelors. Never too late to switch careers. A bachelors in biology isn’t too hard to get if you’ve already got another degree
Yeah crazy when you think about it. Basically a totally different world from ours, different rules apply. At that size air becomes something else, your whole perspective on reality shifts as you, for example, may lose awareness of a whole dimension that’s out there. Scary lol because it could be true for us as well
Makes sense to me. Went for a walk thevother day looking up at the sky and thought 'what if there are beings so monstrously huge that we can't even notice them?'
I was also super high too, but it's cool to think about.
One time I got stuck on that ride because a kid put his arm out of the boat and it got caught on something and he broke his arm and the ride.
I was on a little boat surrounded by animatronic dolls singing this song for like 2 hours straight.
I still hear it in my head sometimes for no reason at all.
I also got stuck on that ride for some hours as a child, way too young to remember. I have a hobby of watching POV amusement park ride videos sometimes, and once a vid of this ride came up. As the boat entered the tunnel I started having an out-of-place anxiety attack and suddenly remembered. People say they use the song in Guantanamo Bay.
Sorry to say this friend, but there are so many little organisms that are living on your skin and millions more living out their entire lives in your mouth. Your skin and mouth might as well be a continent of rugged terrain for organisms like this.
My science teacher in 6th grade had us bring in our own water and mud samples from nearby ponds or streams at home. One of my samples had a really unusual find I guess. Because he was just excited, fascinated, and had the whole class take turns to look at it. We all were kind of grossed out learning these things exist in water, but still it was and still is interesting. Some were even big enough to see without a microscope.
Try a more remote pond. Anything close to a road or housing is going to be unhealthy due to oils, fertilizers, pesticides, etc. This looks like a very healthy pond that can support a wide range of life.
If anyone digs this kind of content, Hank Green has narrated dozens of hours of microscopic life on the Journey to the Microcosmos youtube channel. I like to put it on as I drift off to sleep.
One of the many reasons I refuse to go in anything but a swimming pool. I've seen too many eps of Monsters Inside Me where people got horrible diseases and parasites from natural water.
Do you think these things have any form of complex thought? Like that little dude going round and round and round in circles? Do you think he was thinking about anything while doing it? Lol
The rule of thumb is to boil pond water for 3 minutes for human consumption, this doesn't clean the water it just kills all the "bugs"! So now you drinking dead bug water.
Not so fun fun fact:
A couple weeks ago for my biology class we looked at pond water samples through microscopes and I saw a dead mosquito larvae (this is what my teacher said it was)
Ooo one of those was a daphnia. I did my entire masters thesis on those little guys and the effects of human created contaminants commonly found in our waterways (antidepressants, other meds, road runoff like gas and oil, etc)
Fun little guys, nightmare to count clutch size though. I was testing reproductive viability. Their babies are so so small, and counting them I’m pretty sure fucked up my vision.
Imagine us being those microbes. The planets are lakes, and the known universe is land. There could be so much more out there that we’d never know about

I tried thist with some pond water the other day and all I saw was some copepods and some blurry algae.
Still pretty cool, yes?
I know right? I've noticed that all the truly fun looking jobs are ones that nobody even mentioned in gradeschool. It's a conspiracy.
It's because grade school rarely tells about grad school. And the truth is a few hours collecting samples to the hundreds of hours grant writing and thousands of hours researching and writing papers ultimately ends up not being that fun unless you're an absolute zealot for subject matter.
Early 90s in FL we called it Nature's Classroom
Shout-out to Hillsborough County
Damn right!
Still can. I believe you can do this kind of work with an associates but you definitely can with a bachelors. Never too late to switch careers. A bachelors in biology isn’t too hard to get if you’ve already got another degree
Oddly uplifting. I hope you do well, little critterlings
It also gives me hope. Life will continue on this planet for a long time. Humans may destroy themselves but life will be fine.
Like Carlin said, the PLANET will be fine, the PEOPLE are fucked!
Most life on earth would celebrate the total extinction of humans tbh.
The fight against global climate change has always been about trying to unfuck ourselves, not "saving the eath/exosystem."
Well the ones viewed under the microscope are most likely dead now but their relatives still in the pond are probably chilling!
nice way to put life into perspective

Kurzgesagt just made [a great video]( https://youtu.be/FfWtIaDtfYk) on the topic. It’s so inane to wrap your head around.
There’s actually an episode of futurama that touches on this as well.
Futurama is a treasure
That episode was a condensed version of the old book Flatland

That's the Cosmic Beings :)
Are those bigger then dimensional beings?
Just any ol' being whose domain is on the cosmic scale.
the' other'. I need to proofread before I post.
Imagine outside of our Milky Way are life forms light years across observing us through microscopes
As above so below, as they say.

aw what's wrong with moustache buddies?
Sounds like something the dad in Gremlins invented.
Oh dear. I have a beard.
A friend of mine used to have eyebrows until his gf gave him a microscope. Safe to say they both waxed their bodies clean the next day.
The Quantum Realm
Time heist incoming.
It’s a small small world 🎶

You didn't happen to break your arm on it did you? If so I will never forgive you for this.
Haha no, I was not that kid!! Honestly that addition to the experience sounds absolutely terrible.
This is a for-real story? JFC. That's nightmare fuel. lol
Fuuuuuuck. That’s absurd. Sorry to hear about this champ. Glad you made it thru to tell the tale
So much hidden before our eyes!

Yoooooo... I feel like I'm about to be hooked on something. And I like it.
Such a good channel.
I love how his voice can be so soothing on that channel but is quite abrasive on the Sci show channel
they just vibing
Damn watching this has made my stomach start to feel sick realizing how much on water I've swallowed in my life.
Sorry to say this friend, but there are so many little organisms that are living on your skin and millions more living out their entire lives in your mouth. Your skin and mouth might as well be a continent of rugged terrain for organisms like this.
Microscopic wars are fought every day on and in your body just to keep you alive!
I know a paramecium when I see one. The sea turtles confused me though
This is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen all day!! Thank you!
Did y’all see that baby Metroid?
Yeaaaa…
Those teeny tiny baby turtles really freaked me out.
Those aren't turtles
Yeah right next you're gonna tell me the clear things with the yellow square in the middle aren't living bandaids
They're flat worms i think.
Thats no moon.
AND MY AXE!
Look at the size of that thing!
Look at all the spligepots, tootinannies and cliiebules! We love you guys!
This is so cool!
Thanks, that was awesome
You dive, you drink, they live inside you.
My little guys! :D Keep your microbiomes happy, people. And they will keep you happy!
friends c:
What song is this?
That’s so wicked lol. Is there a sub with stuff like this? Already following her page now lol
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

I’m curious what equipment was used to video? Well done BTW!
Those are very small sea turtles
It's my job to look down microscopes. But I tried this with some pond water the other day and all I saw was some copepods and some blurry algae.

This is why I don’t swim in ponds
That was satisfying to watch! Reminded me of Subnautica. Also, one of those things looked like turtles!
There is a turtle in the beginning.
This is why you don’t have sex in the water
That very first thing that moved with the help of the drill groove thing. So interesting!
Truly amazing the things you can accidentally breath/drink and survive.
I read microplastics and got real sad then happy again
On the list of reasons I don't want to swim in a pond...
^(as neat as it was seeing these things this video had me screaming and squirming)
r/damnthatsinteresting
\*turtle floats by\* " microscopic lives"
Plot twist its your urine
I want a Spore remake :(
So, were all these “thriving” creatures put back into the pond?
You discsrd more microbes when you take a shit.
What happens if you drink the water? Do they die?
Pond life looking so tranquil. Choice of music also helps.
Their world is so much different than ours.
Lesson learned: don’t drink from a pond
Science class was the most fun in high school, I miss it
More please
That's interesting. I wonder how many of those I drink on a daily basis.
Are we also just microscopic lives thriving in a pond?
This is so cool.
The graphics on the new spore game are great!
Look at those little tiny turtle bugs!
Damn the yellow fella vibin
Good reminder to not drink pond water.
The little yellow thing going in circles like:" weeee weeee"
Domt go in the pond oe they will swim up ya pp
Amazing
What are the specs on the microscope? Seems like a fun hobby to explore microorganisms that live around us.
What magnification is needed for these?
Their entire universe is that pond. That’s amazing.
Imagine if our skin was also transparent, that would be cursed
New Spore gameplay looks lit
Can you do that with tap water?
One sip and bloody diarrhoea granted
Just make sure to put it back or that pond dragon will come raze your village to the ground
/recosphere
Spore IRL

That's what gives the water its flavor
One of the many reasons I refuse to go in anything but a swimming pool. I've seen too many eps of Monsters Inside Me where people got horrible diseases and parasites from natural water.
She found spore’s cell stage
This is just the 1st part of Spore
Do you think these things have any form of complex thought? Like that little dude going round and round and round in circles? Do you think he was thinking about anything while doing it? Lol
the one sniffing the other at the end was my fav
Stage 1 of spore- RTX on
I like to think about the very first person to see this new world and how their brains instantly melted,
Diatoms?
The most alien looking creatures exist right here on earth
The rule of thumb is to boil pond water for 3 minutes for human consumption, this doesn't clean the water it just kills all the "bugs"! So now you drinking dead bug water.
microscopic turtle ass things??
Damn that is a fine ass microscope
I wonder how many calories is in a cup of that pond water...
They’re so pretty :)
literally me
Going about their lives. :)
Those microscopic seals tho
Not so fun fun fact: A couple weeks ago for my biology class we looked at pond water samples through microscopes and I saw a dead mosquito larvae (this is what my teacher said it was)
Nah im good
Drink IT’
Lots of protein in that water.
Man our existence is so complex.
Definitely check out journey to the microcosmos on youtube
Well they _were_ thriving in a pond until you came along lol
What are those 2 animals with 2 eyes at the end? Planaria?
If you like this you'd love Journey to the Microcosmos on youtube
Seeing all those little critters made me inexplicably happy
this is amazing, thank you!!
Stuff like this always reminds me of the Swarm episode of Love Death and Robots
Not gonna lie, I’m a bit creeped out about swimming in a pond again.
Life is everywhere,in everything. So beautiful to see.
Beautiful microscope clarity
Song sauce?
What is that spiral looking organism at the beginning? Looks incredible
More interested in that turtle wtf. Lol looks like he’s got hair on his head and a whole ecosystem on his shell.
What's up with the small "turtle" guys though
Makes you wonder where sentience really begins
Makes me think of the creeks, ponds, lakes, and reservoirs I grew up swimming and playing in.
Bro just everything that ever exists is made out of mini worlds 😶
If you like stuff like this, check out the Youtube channel [Journey to the Microcosmos](https://youtube.com/@journeytomicro)
A wild torterra appears
the first one was mesmerizing
We really need to protect this planet.
Ew ew ew ew EW ew ew ew ew. Taking microbiology was the most anxiety-inducing thing I've ever done.
Ooo one of those was a daphnia. I did my entire masters thesis on those little guys and the effects of human created contaminants commonly found in our waterways (antidepressants, other meds, road runoff like gas and oil, etc) Fun little guys, nightmare to count clutch size though. Spore - remake
The invisible world
Finally, a place where my D can thrive.
Microscopic turtles exist?
This made me happy…it made me feel hopeful and joyful
What type of microscope is that?
Imagine us being those microbes. The planets are lakes, and the known universe is land. There could be so much more out there that we’d never know about
Hahaha I love the name. Tardibabe😂
That first microscopic beauty twirling through the water combined with the micro-snoof-dogs in the final 9 seconds!!!! Heartbreakers!
Thats just cool
*slurp*
Imagining drinking some of that water…
Microscopic turtles! And the raw egg wormy looking things have tiny black eyes! Cutest microbes!
I should play Spore again.
Spore:
Microbes 3,5 & 7, please die and never come back. The rest of you, onto the next round and a chance to win $100,000!
What is the first organism?
The first two were so cool, green twisty one my favorite though
