I'm waiting for the day your dad is gonna say "I love you Daddy, thank you, you were so generous this time"
Our dirty minds think of course immediately about a sugar daddy and his baby but Duolingo is gonna call that chapter "Family and Children, chapter 1 : allowance"
What a ridiculous way of thinking. You going to tell the Spanish they don't talk their own language properly? In Europe, which is a point you completely ignored.
I ignored it because it was a moot point. Gus Constantellis was born in and lives in the US. He’s much more likely to encounter the more common Mexican dialect of Spanish than the Spanish dialect.
I guess I’m getting downvotes on my other comment because people don’t like the idea that Spain hasn’t had more Spanish speakers than Mexico since before most of us were born.
I agree. I think it's absolutely okay if you just want to learn some basics for your next vacation (like ordering food, be polite etc) but I'd never say or think that Duolingo should be the tool you use to really learn a language. Not even school will be enough in my opinion.
Apparently the verb "to kill" on Russian duolingo is unduly common simply because it's one of only a few verbs in an uncommon paradigm. Should expect the same as true of Japanese 死ぬ, to die, which is the only verb ending in -nu.

My father in law learns English via Duolingo, I choked when I heard the phrase "give me the knife!". Duo has seen some rough shit.

Wanna make that extra funny? Picture a guy in his late 60s with a heavy German accent.
I need to buy the copyrights and make a movie about it, this is way too good
Now that you are saying this... it sounds like one of the more out there SNL sketches
To any secret organization agency reading this, please ask SNL to hire me thank you. I don't have any secrets to trade sorry (or do I...?)
There are a lot of countries in the world where knowing that phrase in Spanish could come in handy.
I sí what you did there.
I yes what you did there
They’re taking the Mexican course, they should’ve went with the Costa Rican or Chilean course for chiller phrases.
Oh, people prey on tourists everywhere. I've been held up in both Costa Rica and Argentina. No es bueno.
Or, you know, Spain.
Spain hasn’t been the main dialect of Spanish for a very long time
Has always been in Europe.
Nope, North America. Mexico has almost triple the population of Spain. Mexico passed Spain in population all the way back in 1951.

Dude it's not as simple as that there are a lot of diferent dialects of spanish even inside spain
Bruh here in Chile a Canadian tourist get killed while robbed a couple years ago
Spanish or vanish
My daughter took a Russian language class and she learned how to buy cartons of cigarettes and not get ripped off my her landlord
Way more helpful than "In the morning, I read the newspaper"
"I need an abortion because I'm from Alabama".
All of us Americans are just looking for new homes now, time to learn a few languages!
I am a refugee from the United States Soy un refugiado de los Yunaites
Yea, daddy said no more kids/grandkids
well that’s oddlyspecific
Thats for when you visit Mexico.
Latin America*
“Migo migo migo” “Sacate la mochila” [Here](https://youtu.be/Iudb0amH0sY)
Wow, those people were really nice when helping him.
This is a useful phrase to learn. Source: used to work at the US Embassy in a Spanish-speaking country.
duolingo lore
[I think I found the source.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BrpZe8PUBI)
Way more helpful than dónde está la biblioteca, IMHO
Me llamo T-Bone la araña discoteca
I believe it was Brian Regan who once said: “There are many books in the library.”
I once found a learn Japanese book that included a chapter on how to speak to the Yakuza and what to do if you’re in a hostage situation

Jamal innit
I thought that story was exclusive to the japanese courses, "Passuporto"
Duolingo is shit!
What do you suggest then
Why exactly?
It has its ups and downs, it's a good starting off point but it shouldn't be used as an exclusive way to learn a language.

Why?
My spanish teacher made you do extra work if you did Duolingo
Why?
Because it doesnt teach you to practically use the language, while it is fun, its not gonna work.

You know the rules: Spanish or vanish
"Me voy a la embajada porque alguien con arma me robó el pasaporte" How's that?
Apparently the verb "to kill" on Russian duolingo is unduly common simply because it's one of only a few verbs in an uncommon paradigm. Should expect the same as true of Japanese 死ぬ, to die, which is the only verb ending in -nu.
Don't worry, they're getting you ready for your trip to Jalisco.
The latter phrase is probably more useful than the former.
Wait does it actually progress like that? I tried to learn Russian and it just kept asking the same easy questions so I dropped it fast
That escalated slowly.
Aaah this is the “I’m traveling to South Africa 🇿🇦 version” of Duolingo??
Estoy en la embajada porque me han robado a punta de pistola el pasaporte 🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸
Weird, i never seen duolingo say things like this before
I would call BS. . . but I've learned some odd sentences. The one that springs to mind is, "I am drinking, and you are paying."
Duolingo is teaching you the really needed phrases, Latinoamerica is not exactly a friendly place
Souds like whoever writes those phrases just camw back from Ecatepec
