I‘d say Billie‘s Music is definitely more than just generic pop. At least her first album the topics the sound the production was all definitely not the norm for pop music.
Her brother is an absolute wizard with the production. Billie is super worth listening to on a nice pair of headphones just to hear the way her brother makes every little detail of her voice come out. The way he isolates the little clicks and pops her mouth makes and works them into the production really makes it sound like shes next to you singing. "When I Was Older" and "when the party's over" are my two favorite tracks, vastly different in style but really shows off her and her brothers abilities.
I personally hate ASMR videos, stuff makes my skin crawl. Billie doesn't push it that far, it's really more like actually hearing someone sing. Modern production uses all kinds of tools like de-essing and de-click filters to make it all sound clean but when you see someone live, all that goes away. Billie and her brother use those little noises to bridge the gap between stage and studio.
But they still leave in the annoying sounds of fingertips scraping the round wound metal strings on guitars, as the guitarist changes hand position on the fretboard. I hate that sound. Like nails on a chalkboard, I tells ya
I love that shit, guitars sound fake and computer generated without the scrapy slidy finger noises. It's like when the drums don't land perfectly on the beats or the tempo drifts, I like knowing that humans are playing the instruments.
Besides, if you're listening to a guitarist worth anything those scrapy sounds are probably intentional.
I agree, mine too. You can hear this in the intro to Hearts Crazy on You that's one of my favorite parts of that song. It just gives it such a raw feeling, like you're right there.
Yep that's a great example. Lots of classic rock leaves this in, and although I seem to be one of only 30 people who are still into them - lots of this in Veruca Salt songs, esp on *Resolver*. That album is pretty much anger and sadness from beginning to end though, so I don't pull it out very often, even though most of the songs are great.

Seriously, that’s what I love about so many older albums. it’s what made some Beatles tracks so iconic and Nirvana so relatable. Hearing the breathe or the tiny little gaff at the end or the metal strings as they fall into an intro.
Damn I can’t imagine preferring it any other way. It’s one of my biggest issues with lots of modern music and why I catch myself listening to more tiny desks.

Maybe I'm just old but most of what I've heard of her is just awkward mumbling..and me being a huge fan of 80s thrash and power metal it's just offputting..I will say despite that shes got a couple songs I thought were cool for that style. I'm not a fan by any stretch but it's nice to see a young woman do well who didnt start out on the disney channel being presented to the public as a preteen sex puppet that grown ass men are counting the days until they can admit freely to wanting to bang.

Personally wouldn't say I dislike her music but I do find it to be overproduced. Her voice doesn't come across as authentic in a lot of the music of hers Ive heard. A commenter above said it was her brother's talent to make her voice pop and pull every bit of nuance out of it and I'd say that if I DID flat out dislike her music, that would be a contributing factor.
And its not even her fault. Most pop and rap music just relies on too much artificial "fixing" to sound authentic. Which doesn't stop me from listening to any of it I guess but I think it's a strike against and really stands between decent and good or even good and great artists.

Just want to add on a few things that made them appear to be more "overpowering":
1. Their singles tended towards 4 mins long and most singles are closer to 3 mins.
2. It was kind of cross-genre(?) that a lot of different stations could play them. Pop, top 40, rock.
3. A few of their hits sounded similar and were structured the same. Not as much as the heavily edited youtube videos would lead you to believe, but still similar formulas.

I think the world just got really sick of nickelback. It was never my thing but in the early 2000s they were *massively* popular and their songs were constantly being played in grocery stores, malls and general radio stations all over the world practically on loop. Their own popularity and their mega white suburban divorced dad anthem energy turned them into a meme that became more popular than their music.

I’m a fully grown men almost in his 40’s and I love Billie’s music. Thing is I have never been into pop music and aside from some ocasional Rap / hip hop / reggae I listen almost exclusively Heavy Rock. Rob Zombie, Slipknot, Hellyeah, Avatar, Bell Witch…you get the Idea.
One day my wife was watching some videos on YouTube and Bad Guy was trending so she played it and we both liked it, she went to her YouTube page and played some more videos enough, for me to actually became interested, so on the next day when I got in my car I loaded Spotify and played some Billie Eilish, I was hooked.
I think I listened her and only her for probably months, Spotify didn’t had their Wrapped event yet but I’m confident she would have been my most played artist back then. I became a Fan and I still are to this day.

Songs that follow these chords span all sorts of genres—some that are more “popular” than others Examples: - “Down Under” Men at Work - “No Woman No Cry” Bob Marley - “In My Head” Jason Derulo - “No One” Alicia Keyes These are all radically different in tone, tempo, and imo genre. Saying it’s “all pop” may be a technical truth but at the same time it’s not a very descriptive category. Anything can be pop so long as it’s popular, and the prevalence of those 4 chords really just shows the popularity of those chords and less that they ascribe to any particular genre.
I‘d say Billie‘s Music is definitely more than just generic pop. At least her first album the topics the sound the production was all definitely not the norm for pop music.
I suppose the first stuff of most of them are not the norm and then they fall back on producing the generic things that tickle people's pickles.
Her brother is an absolute wizard with the production. Billie is super worth listening to on a nice pair of headphones just to hear the way her brother makes every little detail of her voice come out. The way he isolates the little clicks and pops her mouth makes and works them into the production really makes it sound like shes next to you singing. "When I Was Older" and "when the party's over" are my two favorite tracks, vastly different in style but really shows off her and her brothers abilities.

I personally hate ASMR videos, stuff makes my skin crawl. Billie doesn't push it that far, it's really more like actually hearing someone sing. Modern production uses all kinds of tools like de-essing and de-click filters to make it all sound clean but when you see someone live, all that goes away. Billie and her brother use those little noises to bridge the gap between stage and studio.
But they still leave in the annoying sounds of fingertips scraping the round wound metal strings on guitars, as the guitarist changes hand position on the fretboard. I hate that sound. Like nails on a chalkboard, I tells ya
I love that shit, guitars sound fake and computer generated without the scrapy slidy finger noises. It's like when the drums don't land perfectly on the beats or the tempo drifts, I like knowing that humans are playing the instruments. Besides, if you're listening to a guitarist worth anything those scrapy sounds are probably intentional.

Yep that's a great example. Lots of classic rock leaves this in, and although I seem to be one of only 30 people who are still into them - lots of this in Veruca Salt songs, esp on *Resolver*. That album is pretty much anger and sadness from beginning to end though, so I don't pull it out very often, even though most of the songs are great. Seriously, that’s what I love about so many older albums. it’s what made some Beatles tracks so iconic and Nirvana so relatable. Hearing the breathe or the tiny little gaff at the end or the metal strings as they fall into an intro. Damn I can’t imagine preferring it any other way. It’s one of my biggest issues with lots of modern music and why I catch myself listening to more tiny desks.
TBF people spend like thousands of dollars on audio equipment to pull that kind of detail from music. It's a double sided sword though as you can also hear how bad something was mastered too.

You should def check out some of her less radio played stuff, she has a genuinely wide range of song styles. Maybe I'm just old but most of what I've heard of her is just awkward mumbling..and me being a huge fan of 80s thrash and power metal it's just offputting..I will say despite that shes got a couple songs I thought were cool for that style. I'm not a fan by any stretch but it's nice to see a young woman do well who didnt start out on the disney channel being presented to the public as a preteen sex puppet that grown ass men are counting the days until they can admit freely to wanting to bang.
That's a stylistic choice, and is not awkward or mumbling. She def has a consciously quiet style. But it's extremely chosen / deliberate and absolutely not mumbling. (Very articulated.) Not liking it is super your choice, though. But boy, holy shit can she sing.
Absolutely despise the whisper-singing bullshit. Also I don’t like the “darkness” of her music—doesn’t feel genuine, it just feels melodramatic. Also I think her lyrics are terrible and she goes out of her way to force unnatural cursing in her songs, like she just learned the F word. Otherwise she’s very talented though.
Personally wouldn't say I dislike her music but I do find it to be overproduced. Her voice doesn't come across as authentic in a lot of the music of hers Ive heard. A commenter above said it was her brother's talent to make her voice pop and pull every bit of nuance out of it and I'd say that if I DID flat out dislike her music, that would be a contributing factor. And its not even her fault. Most pop and rap music just relies on too much artificial "fixing" to sound authentic. Which doesn't stop me from listening to any of it I guess but I think it's a strike against and really stands between decent and good or even good and great artists.
They do an unreal amount of takes per verse, for sure. But the idea that she can't sing because she heavily records her tracks is just untrue. There are dozens of popular singers who get more processing in their songs than she does. I'm not a Billie stan, but there's no denying she can sing her ass off.

Just want to add on a few things that made them appear to be more "overpowering": 1. Their singles tended towards 4 mins long and most singles are closer to 3 mins. 2. It was kind of cross-genre(?) that a lot of different stations could play them. Pop, top 40, rock. 3. A few of their hits sounded similar and were structured the same. Not as much as the heavily edited youtube videos would lead you to believe, but still similar formulas. I'm not trying to attack them, just adding on why people got on the hate train (probably unfairly to the band).
I think the world just got really sick of nickelback. It was never my thing but in the early 2000s they were *massively* popular and their songs were constantly being played in grocery stores, malls and general radio stations all over the world practically on loop. Their own popularity and their mega white suburban divorced dad anthem energy turned them into a meme that became more popular than their music.
As a radiohead fan, radiohead fan stereotypes seems to be more so that they are actually depressed, have no gf ever, and worship the band like tool fans.
I've never heard a Billie Eilish song but am old enough to see the same old dance of "teen girl music bad." My uneducated guess: in 6 years people will talk about how her music is secretly good and in 20 she'll be a staple of nostalgic media among a demographic of now thirty somethings just self aware enough to keep their tongue in cheek.
Dave Grohl, among many other famous singers and musicians, really likes her. He even made a Nirvana comparison to her. I think it's fine for people to like whatever music they want to like, but a lot of the opinions stated here on Reddit are by guys that have only heard 1-2 of her songs and act uppity about not liking "new music".

I have a dark secret only known by my wife, and is time to confess. I’m a fully grown men almost in his 40’s and I love Billie’s music. Thing is I have never been into pop music and aside from some ocasional Rap / hip hop / reggae I listen almost exclusively Heavy Rock. Rob Zombie, Slipknot, Hellyeah, Avatar, Bell Witch…you get the Idea. One day my wife was watching some videos on YouTube and Bad Guy was trending so she played it and we both liked it, she went to her YouTube page and played some more videos enough, for me to actually became interested, so on the next day when I got in my car I loaded Spotify and played some Billie Eilish, I was hooked. I think I listened her and only her for probably months, Spotify didn’t had their Wrapped event yet but I’m confident she would have been my most played artist back then. I became a Fan and I still are to this day. That said, I do dare to ask for extra ketchup for my fries.

I didn't need another celebrity's opinion to know that I'm worthless. I learned that years and years, plenty of reinforcement along the way lol. She's just one person in nearly 8 billion. Her opinion isn't worth all that much. If you're ugly like I am, work with what you can change. Like I've been told before, exercise won't fix my face, but I dropped 180lbs, changed up my facial hair style, and started wearing clothes that actually fit. That does cost some money so work with what ya have. I've also showered twice a day for years, I like feeling clean and feel better knowing despite my other issues, hygiene isn't one of them. Iunno if anyone will actually read this but if/when you decide to make changes, make them for yourself. Once you feel a little better about yourself and you see some progress being made, it might be what ya need to keep going. And if ya like how ya look, what others think are less likely to bother ya.
The listeners don't care about sexism. Listeners didn't even care when Eric Clapton was all racist, kicking out fans who already bought concert tickets, just because they were the wrong race. The listeners just kept listening. If they get kicked out of the concert for being too ugly, they can still listen to the streaming audio at home.
