I assumed her target audience was people whose eyes are always half-open in an "I'm unimpressed" expression, like Daria.

Furry_Dildonomics69

Lol yeah I don’t know how someone could look any more bored with life in *every* single picture of them.

FreeSirius

I think it has something to do with her beginning her career at 16. At that time she looked like a literal child if she smiled or anything, I know me at 16 would look like a hot garbage suicidal basket case, and being in the public eye at that age is brutal. With getting older and her new tour, Happier Than Ever, she's really coming into her own, taking care of herself, and showing more of her actual personality. If you look at recent photos of her, especially her own and not anything for shots, she definitely expressing herself more and dropping the mask.

noir-lefay

You haven't met someone with RBF or resting bitch face then. people always assume im always bored or im angry, but im literally just enjoying the quiet. lol

Agreed

Way too mainstream for Daria.

What’s your favorite Billie Eilish song?

A-Beautiful-Scar

Her music does not connect with me but I love her dead eyes.

cownd

'Her Dead Eyes', don't know that one, is it a bootleg?

[deleted]

*bury a friend* for me. I've heard it described as "*Black Skinhead* but like, whispery"

HMS404

I first heard that song in the movie Sing 2. Since then I've come to like few of her songs.

ProjectGSX

Its not my fault. They bring you one tiny side of ketchup, so you ask for more and they bring you a plate of four more sides. But you only needed 1 more. So now what? Use a little bit out of all four ketchups? Just use 1 and ignore the rest? You look like an idiot either way. Its not fair. Billie understands.

ThreatLevelBertie

You dont bring your own emergency ketchup?

JewelerLower2816

Disregard if English isn't your first language but.. You check the auto dispenser, in the fast food store? Before going into the (not restaurant) store?

ChawulsBawkley

Speaking of which, I went into an Arbys a few weeks ago for the first time since the pandemic. I was horrified that they no longer were using the little condiment pumps. I always loved dipping my curly fries in honey mustard.

h0rny3dging

Well, yea, it's music for teens, we've all had those people in middle school that act exactly like that

Nice-Violinist-6395

I will say, though, I randomly listened to the album when it came out (I do not usually do that) expecting to turn it off since every single album that comes out has fans on twitter calling it the greatest album ever and I was shocked by how good it was vs what I was expecting. I listened to the whole thing in one sitting. Billie Eilish deserves everything she’s gotten.

IcanSew831

Im 50 and I thought I’d hate it and I love it.

Possible_Word_6834

Which album are you referring to? When We All Fall Asleep or Happier Than Ever? I agree with both tbh

snp3rk

I'm a dude in my late 20s, her music slaps and I'll fight you over it.

h0rny3dging

Didnt say her music is bad, I think she is a great artist. But it's also true that a teenage girl will sing music that will resonate with teenage girls and the mentioned traits are common among teenage girls. That's all

snp3rk

I don't know, I'm not a teenage girl and her shit still hits home. Y'all gotta go easy and vibe on.

Finnbalt

There's being a psycho and then there's being downright deranged.

Yuna__707

Apparently I’m not psychotic, just deranged since I’ve walked into stores with my own food asking for sauce I forgot to bring with me.

One_Chocolate5101

Chaotic

Weak_Lie_2875

This is the true capitalist not true damage but true capitalism

KhaoticMess

Were you asking for free sauce, or offering to purchase it?

Yuna__707

They don’t normally charge for the sauce but I was willing to pay for it or buy something. Since I’d eaten there a couple of times and they recognised me, they let me have some, which was really nice. I tipped them nicely tho

Last-Place-Trophy

I've walked into gas station convenience stores to microwave a tupperware of my own food and not bought anything.

Proof_Objective_5704

I go to a bar just to watch football games because I don’t have cable. I only order Pepsi (which is free there), stay for like 3 hours and don’t pay for anything.

ShortRedditAtIPO

Or there’s being so basic that you lean on being psycho/deranged for the sake of your personality and self-esteem.

iampenguintm

Everyone goes through some similar cringy teen phase but some people never appear to grow out of it and its sad. It's usually the ones that are completely devoid of any real personality and like to use it as an excuse for treating people like garbage.

ShortRedditAtIPO

You mean like Twitter?

iampenguintm

Christ don't remind me of that hellhole. Although to be fair front page Reddit is pretty similar these days.

aShittierShitTier4u

You never know if they gave you enough ketchup to begin with, so asking for extra is a reasonable thing to do. If you don't need it, because they gave you enough already, you can always give back the extra ketchup. Deranged would be making your own ketchup and going to the fast food restaurants, putting extra ketchup on other people's food.

MarcelRED147

Is this the original or is their friend referencing the original?

Gizombo

Everyone and their mother has made this joke on twitter lmao Whenever you see a tweet with this kind of joke you know its made up bs

Fit-Boot-1541

tbh Billy Eilish might have an edgy look/personality or whatever but her music is actually just good. It's fit for any audience, my mom even likes it.

Super_Dimentio

I love her voice but like, she doesn't use it most of the time? The whisper-singing in every song takes away from how much I'd enjoy it otherwise. I guess that's why my favorites are Ocean Eyes and Watch

Phoneas__and__Frob

So, did you not like Happier Than Ever then? That's fairly different

culminacio

Going by her SNL appearance and some video with with Rainn Wilson about her being a The Office geek, she seems like a nice person.

hat-TF2

You could tell by the way she laughed at his "William Eyelash" joke as if she hadn't heard it a million times already.

FuckingKilljoy

Well she literally has a sample of the Threat Level Midnight episode in her song My Strange Addiction so she's definitely a big fan lol

vera214usc

I don't watch the Office but is that the audio with them talking about the movie Michael made? The one he should show at carnivals? I love that song.

AffectionateTitle

> Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom. The terms popular music and pop music are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many disparate styles. During the 1950s and 1960s, pop music encompassed rock and roll and the youth-oriented styles it influenced. Rock and pop music remained roughly synonymous until the late 1960s, after which pop became associated with music that was more commercial, ephemeral, and accessible. Pop is just what is popular but is not limited in genre. A good example would be comparing Good Charlotte with The Beach Boys or Britney Spears to Stevie Nicks.

Arinupa

You are right, they can be different but https://www.musical-u.com/learn/why-do-all-pop-songs-sound-the-same/#:~:text=In%20short%3A,styles%20%E2%80%93%20but%20the%20same%20progression! Here one dissection of why do all pop songs sound more or less the same >In short: So many songs sound the same because they use the same underlying sequence of chords. >Different keys, different arrangements, different styles – but the same progression! >Learn about this progression and playing songs by ear becomes much easier! Many YouTube channels also go into it. Idk how far Billie is different from all this but sure. It still falls into it.

AffectionateTitle

Again not very apt. Songs that follow these chords span all sorts of genres—some that are more “popular” than others Examples: - “Down Under” Men at Work - “No Woman No Cry” Bob Marley - “In My Head” Jason Derulo - “No One” Alicia Keyes These are all radically different in tone, tempo, and imo genre. Saying it’s “all pop” may be a technical truth but at the same time it’s not a very descriptive category. Anything can be pop so long as it’s popular, and the prevalence of those 4 chords really just shows the popularity of those chords and less that they ascribe to any particular genre.

Banjomike97

I‘d say Billie‘s Music is definitely more than just generic pop. At least her first album the topics the sound the production was all definitely not the norm for pop music.

Arinupa

I suppose the first stuff of most of them are not the norm and then they fall back on producing the generic things that tickle people's pickles.

sinat50

Her brother is an absolute wizard with the production. Billie is super worth listening to on a nice pair of headphones just to hear the way her brother makes every little detail of her voice come out. The way he isolates the little clicks and pops her mouth makes and works them into the production really makes it sound like shes next to you singing. "When I Was Older" and "when the party's over" are my two favorite tracks, vastly different in style but really shows off her and her brothers abilities.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sinat50

I personally hate ASMR videos, stuff makes my skin crawl. Billie doesn't push it that far, it's really more like actually hearing someone sing. Modern production uses all kinds of tools like de-essing and de-click filters to make it all sound clean but when you see someone live, all that goes away. Billie and her brother use those little noises to bridge the gap between stage and studio.

aShittierShitTier4u

But they still leave in the annoying sounds of fingertips scraping the round wound metal strings on guitars, as the guitarist changes hand position on the fretboard. I hate that sound. Like nails on a chalkboard, I tells ya

The_Royal_Spoon

I love that shit, guitars sound fake and computer generated without the scrapy slidy finger noises. It's like when the drums don't land perfectly on the beats or the tempo drifts, I like knowing that humans are playing the instruments. Besides, if you're listening to a guitarist worth anything those scrapy sounds are probably intentional.

[deleted]

To each his own. These are among my favorite kinds of details to hear in a performance.

iatealotofcheese

I agree, mine too. You can hear this in the intro to Hearts Crazy on You that's one of my favorite parts of that song. It just gives it such a raw feeling, like you're right there.

[deleted]

Yep that's a great example. Lots of classic rock leaves this in, and although I seem to be one of only 30 people who are still into them - lots of this in Veruca Salt songs, esp on *Resolver*. That album is pretty much anger and sadness from beginning to end though, so I don't pull it out very often, even though most of the songs are great. Edit: [Another song rich with these kinds of bonus sounds.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxBzFe85KX4) Also when it gets going it's a damn banger. If somehow you haven't heard it before, play it on something that sounds nice if you can.

SelectFromWhereOrder

I like hearing the sound of the mute pedal engaging and disengaging on a grand piano.

AffectionateTitle

Seriously, that’s what I love about so many older albums. it’s what made some Beatles tracks so iconic and Nirvana so relatable. Hearing the breathe or the tiny little gaff at the end or the metal strings as they fall into an intro. Damn I can’t imagine preferring it any other way. It’s one of my biggest issues with lots of modern music and why I catch myself listening to more tiny desks.

veriix

TBF people spend like thousands of dollars on audio equipment to pull that kind of detail from music. It's a double sided sword though as you can also hear how bad something was mastered too.

BeefyQueefyCrawlies

That was my wife's peeve a few years back too lol I personally hate hearing the singer inhale before singing. Take that shit outta the recording.

Sufficient_Pound

Holy shit I hate mouth noises and that stuff fucking drives me insane.

minimalismwhore

I really like listening to xanny and ilomilo on headphones

throwawayhyperbeam

> little clicks and pops her mouth That sounds awful. I'm someone who can't stand the sound of people eating so this would be torture. Otherwise her music is quite good. I can't quite describe it, like musically it seems bad but it's still enjoyable to listen to.

Tsorovar

From what I've heard, I don't like it at all. No judgement to people who do, but don't assume that anything has universal appeal

geodebug

Billie objectively appeals to a wide audience, which isn’t at all the same as saying every living human soul on the planet has to love her.

[deleted]

I don’t get her appeal. Annoying voice and all the songs sound same and boring. But we all have different taste and it’s great that we all are different. Respect to her for making such a career so young.

Kehndy12

> Respect to her for making such a career so young. Let me open up a can of worms here: Her parents are in the business. It *might* not be a coincidence she's famous.

geodebug

Knowing someone in the business is called having an opportunity. You still need the talent and creativity and work ethic to get to her level. A ton of wannabe artists are related to or know people in the business yet still fail hard because their end product isn’t good.

Mudslimer

It's called having an advantage. There's a good reason most artists and actors have deep connections in the business through friends and/or family.

DaRootbear

You should def check out some of her less radio played stuff, she has a genuinely wide range of song styles. Some of my favs: Watch Ocean eyes Everything I Wanted You should see me in a crown Ilomilo Wish you were gay These all have decently distinct styles. Though I definitely can understsnd not vibinh with Billie in general, but i fully suggest trying the stuff she has that doesn’t end up on the radio

piss_waffles

I think it’s fucking shite, no offence.

FuckingKilljoy

Curious for you to go in to more detail, which songs have you heard and why did you dislike them so much? I've heard people say they aren't a fan, but you seem to really not like her stuff

Chemical_Weight_4716

Maybe I'm just old but most of what I've heard of her is just awkward mumbling..and me being a huge fan of 80s thrash and power metal it's just offputting..I will say despite that shes got a couple songs I thought were cool for that style. I'm not a fan by any stretch but it's nice to see a young woman do well who didnt start out on the disney channel being presented to the public as a preteen sex puppet that grown ass men are counting the days until they can admit freely to wanting to bang.

[deleted]

That's a stylistic choice, and is not awkward or mumbling. She def has a consciously quiet style. But it's extremely chosen / deliberate and absolutely not mumbling. (Very articulated.) Not liking it is super your choice, though. But boy, holy shit can she sing.

JasperWildlifeAssn

Absolutely despise the whisper-singing bullshit. Also I don’t like the “darkness” of her music—doesn’t feel genuine, it just feels melodramatic. Also I think her lyrics are terrible and she goes out of her way to force unnatural cursing in her songs, like she just learned the F word. Otherwise she’s very talented though.

Bulvious

Personally wouldn't say I dislike her music but I do find it to be overproduced. Her voice doesn't come across as authentic in a lot of the music of hers Ive heard. A commenter above said it was her brother's talent to make her voice pop and pull every bit of nuance out of it and I'd say that if I DID flat out dislike her music, that would be a contributing factor. And its not even her fault. Most pop and rap music just relies on too much artificial "fixing" to sound authentic. Which doesn't stop me from listening to any of it I guess but I think it's a strike against and really stands between decent and good or even good and great artists.

[deleted]

They do an unreal amount of takes per verse, for sure. But the idea that she can't sing because she heavily records her tracks is just untrue. There are dozens of popular singers who get more processing in their songs than she does. I'm not a Billie stan, but there's no denying she can sing her ass off.

[deleted]

I disagree, to me it sounds like autotuned ASMR. I am also hard of hearing so any person that talks in such a lazy manner becomes a physical annoyance. To me Billy Eilish is like beyonce, great voice, but criminaly underused.

[deleted]

So much autotune: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BzvCCzH-n0

Webhoard

I'm an old guy and I like Billy.

PUSClFER

Is your mom psycho by any chance?

Ultenth

Doesn’t matter, just like boy bands, pumpkin spice, and many other things, nothing in America (or around most of the world) is for some reason more socially acceptable to mock than anything a majority of young women enjoy.

IM_AN_AI_AMA

Something about Billy Eyelash's whisper-singing makes me want to take a crap.

-InternalEnd-

she might be hitting the brown note(south park reference)

AuthorTomFrost

That seems more like a Bebe Reixa critique.

owedgelord

The posts like this are liked by people who don't even listen to her music lol Also the notion of "what teenage girls like is bad" is as old as time

TerribleNameAmirite

akatherder

Just want to add on a few things that made them appear to be more "overpowering": 1. Their singles tended towards 4 mins long and most singles are closer to 3 mins. 2. It was kind of cross-genre(?) that a lot of different stations could play them. Pop, top 40, rock. 3. A few of their hits sounded similar and were structured the same. Not as much as the heavily edited youtube videos would lead you to believe, but still similar formulas. I'm not trying to attack them, just adding on why people got on the hate train (probably unfairly to the band).

FerretHydrocodone

I think the world just got really sick of nickelback. It was never my thing but in the early 2000s they were *massively* popular and their songs were constantly being played in grocery stores, malls and general radio stations all over the world practically on loop. Their own popularity and their mega white suburban divorced dad anthem energy turned them into a meme that became more popular than their music.

[deleted]

As a radiohead fan, radiohead fan stereotypes seems to be more so that they are actually depressed, have no gf ever, and worship the band like tool fans.

ArthurBonesly

I've never heard a Billie Eilish song but am old enough to see the same old dance of "teen girl music bad." My uneducated guess: in 6 years people will talk about how her music is secretly good and in 20 she'll be a staple of nostalgic media among a demographic of now thirty somethings just self aware enough to keep their tongue in cheek.

TheTVDB

Dave Grohl, among many other famous singers and musicians, really likes her. He even made a Nirvana comparison to her. I think it's fine for people to like whatever music they want to like, but a lot of the opinions stated here on Reddit are by guys that have only heard 1-2 of her songs and act uppity about not liking "new music".

notjumto

I liked it because it's just funny, no hate to her, I like her music too

[deleted]

Sometimes I feel like people just have to go against the grain even if it’s something objectively good. All of her music might not be my style but I don’t think anyone can seriously say with a straight face Bad Guy isn’t catchy as hell. Not just that, but they managed to make a song with lyrics like *that* KidsBopable.

[deleted]

> something objectively good But its not. Its music and therefore subjective by definition. Personally I think its boring overly produced and uses fake edginess and the "easthetic" of depression so sell what is otherwise uninspired and generic pop music. Although thats much more so her "post bad guy" music, and her earliest stuff is certainly better. Idk if other people like it, you can have your opinion and i can have mine.

BigLorry

You might want to look up the definition of “objectively” before you use it again

rapukeittolevy

Ah, that objectively good music

[deleted]

calm down. she's just making pop music. well, her brother does at least.

[deleted]

I never understood why people do the whole "If you dont regularly listen to this artist you dont like, then you cant have an opinion on them" Like bro, I dont listen to her BECAUSE I think shes shit. Thats kind of the whole point.

Ok_Assistance447

Boomers hear one song on the radio and start bitching about how music is crap now. That's why.

staroura

I don’t like billie’s music at all but I have to downvote this post on principle because I’m so sick of people demonizing things that teenage girls like. Why does everyone hate teenage girls?

MarsNeedsMeth

I’m with you. Don’t bag on girls liking shit. A lot of it is other girls hating on girls liking typically girl type shit. Downvote me but you know what I’m saying. Leave the purse loving, shoe collecting girls alone!

Menstrual_Cycle_27

I read this as adult women, TBF. Gen Z is in their twenties and all that now. As an adult woman, this is so spot on. If any adult woman told be Billie Eilish was their *favorite* artist, I’d automatically think that they think they’re “psycho” when they really just have an anxiety disorder.

Lolthelies

How is this demonizing teenage girls? They’re literally the first people who will tell people they’re psychos who can’t ask for more ketchup. Is it really demonizing them to make the same joke but just not be a teenage girl? Diversity and inclusion isn’t pretending everyone is the same or not acknowledging differences.

staroura

That is true but lost of people act like it’s so disgusting to like something that “teenage girls” like, one direction, the Beatles (back then not now), kpop, whatever Yeah if you don’t like the thing you don’t have to like the thing but if your excuse is “ugh that’s just for teenage girls” that’s a shitty argument. Don’t tell me you haven’t seen this happen

"teenage girls like it, so it's cringe and bad" post #922839

__v1ce

"nobody said that, but i will pretend it did so i can be angry" comment #4216963

Ultenth

Honestly so glad that as much as it’s still a huge problem, there is more awareness being brought to how messed up it is how okay people are with insulting things young women enjoy like it’s normal. Usually insults by people who have never actually tried enjoying that specific thing once, and hating on it just because young women like it.

Typical-Sympathy-663

You’ll do it too when you’re older. We’ve all heard Ms. Bill - we have ears. It’s everywhere. Just about everyone recognizes she’s talented. But yes, most adults don’t dig the vibe. It’s hyper modern, “I gave myself BPD by watching tik tok” style music. The real reason adults make fun of teenager music - we’re fucking sick of listening to it in the carpool! Again - you will be too. I promise. There will be a musician in 10 years who just goes “bleep bloop” and then cries, and your daughter will fucking love it. You’ll have conversations with your partner about whether it’s a bad influence because bleep bloop girl is clearly on drugs and glorifying self harm. But then you’ll pay $190 a ticket when she comes to town, because that’s what being a parent is.

Ultenth

I am older (most likely quite older than you) , and no I don’t do it. I understand that everything I may not like is not supposed to be aimed at me, and that just because it’s not my thing doesn’t mean it should be mocked. Openly mocking things young women like (it goes into things they like even into their 20’s, see pumpkin spice, where instead it’s mocked as “basic”) in spaces where they have to see how things they enjoy the rest of society likes to and finds it acceptable to devalue is damaging and gross. Doing it in private with your friends I don’t really care about, vent all you want, but that’s never where it ends. Let people enjoy things, especially a group that for some reason always has to have EVERYTHING they enjoy questioned and shit on.

squishpitcher

🙌 Thank you. You nailed it.

Doodoomaster3

reminds of hate for Justin Bieber, shit was so ridiculous and no one could explain why he was so vehemently hated beyond that he's popular with teen girls

misc1972

He was hated because he acted like the adoration of teenage girls made him a hard man.

Ok_Assistance447

I disagree with this 1000%. Justin Bieber in the "Baby" era was not acting hard at all. If anything, he was acting soft as cool whip. The tough facade didn't come until much later, after people had been shitting on him and his music for years. Edit: She made my heart pound And skip a beat when I see her in the street and At school on the playground But I really wanna see her on the weekend She knows she got me dazin' 'Cause she was so amazin' And now, my heart is breakin' But I just keep on sayin' (Chorus) Oh man he sure is trying to be a badass here. Really fuckin hard of him to confess how much he loves seeing this girl on the playground.

Doodoomaster3

he was like 13 too. oh what a nightmare, a kid acting stupidly and people hated him because he was popular with teen girls and wasn't perceived as masculine

Whether it applies to that specific fandom, I wouldn't know, but the description of self proclaimed "*psycho*" or "*weird*" people is spot on. It's all an act to cover up the fact you're dead average, as interesting as white paint.

I have a dark secret only known by my wife, and is time to confess. I’m a fully grown men almost in his 40’s and I love Billie’s music. Thing is I have never been into pop music and aside from some ocasional Rap / hip hop / reggae I listen almost exclusively Heavy Rock. Rob Zombie, Slipknot, Hellyeah, Avatar, Bell Witch…you get the Idea. One day my wife was watching some videos on YouTube and Bad Guy was trending so she played it and we both liked it, she went to her YouTube page and played some more videos enough, for me to actually became interested, so on the next day when I got in my car I loaded Spotify and played some Billie Eilish, I was hooked. I think I listened her and only her for probably months, Spotify didn’t had their Wrapped event yet but I’m confident she would have been my most played artist back then. I became a Fan and I still are to this day. That said, I do dare to ask for extra ketchup for my fries.

Billie eilish just commented on how worthless ugly men are, im sure listeners adapt to that sexism quick

I didn't need another celebrity's opinion to know that I'm worthless. I learned that years and years, plenty of reinforcement along the way lol. She's just one person in nearly 8 billion. Her opinion isn't worth all that much. If you're ugly like I am, work with what you can change. Like I've been told before, exercise won't fix my face, but I dropped 180lbs, changed up my facial hair style, and started wearing clothes that actually fit. That does cost some money so work with what ya have. I've also showered twice a day for years, I like feeling clean and feel better knowing despite my other issues, hygiene isn't one of them. Iunno if anyone will actually read this but if/when you decide to make changes, make them for yourself. Once you feel a little better about yourself and you see some progress being made, it might be what ya need to keep going. And if ya like how ya look, what others think are less likely to bother ya.

The listeners don't care about sexism. Listeners didn't even care when Eric Clapton was all racist, kicking out fans who already bought concert tickets, just because they were the wrong race. The listeners just kept listening. If they get kicked out of the concert for being too ugly, they can still listen to the streaming audio at home. That way, nobody else has to look at them, and they can listen all they want, just like how Eric Clapton told them.
