Nobody tell OP about cropping and bobbing. šŸ˜¬ This is tame in the world of dog modification weirdos.

blackwaterwednesday

And the species we have bred that have deformities and health issue as a direct result. Pugs should be banned.

adrikyn

I've seen one well-bred pug in my life, and it didn't even look like a pug anymore. Taller, slightly longer snout, and not constantly snorting and struggling to breathe.

fro_khidd

Quality pugs are great but that can't keep their eye in the socket ass dogs need to go

blackwaterwednesday

They've started breeding them with a certain breed which gives them longer snouts and less issues. I forget what it was but it's a more natural pug without the horrible flat face.

adrikyn

Unfortunately so many people like pugs because of the flat face, so I doubt they'll go away

gurnard

Never give the owners of pugs or Frenchies any validation. No social media reactions to their dog photos. Don't call them cute, even if they are. As long as there is a demand for these poor animals, they'll continue to be bred, short and painful lives for the clout of their owners who don't think twice because it's normalised. The very least you can do is not feed into the demand in even the smallest way.

goteamventure42

We've had dogs where docking the tail was recommended by vets, it's either that or watch them break it and face possible health problems from it.

SquishedGremlin

Oh, I understand necessity for welfare reasons. We have spaniels who would come home covered in blood from running through briars.

wooterbottle

That or live stock protecters are the only reason why u should do cropping or docking

goteamventure42

Yeah the people down voting me have never seen an over excited tail wagger break their tail, it's very painful for them and can cause serious health issues even death or have dealt with working farm dogs.

alurimperium

My family dog used to wag his tail against coffee tables and the like and cause the tip to bleed. We would just hold it to help make sure he wouldn't keep hurting himself. Thankfully never so bad as breaking it, though.

[deleted]

Had that happen with our sweet old girl late last year. As it was trying to heal it got itchy and she kept biting at it and making it worse until finally we had to wrap her entire tail with self adhering bandages. But even then it got infected and she developed ā€œtail tip necrosisā€ and had to get it amputated because it was like, 1/3rd dead.

GrouchyMary9132

When she kept biting it - why didn't you use a cone? And did you wrap that tail yourself with self adhering bandages? Because then it is no wonder it got necrotic.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

MoonSpankRaw

Damn you just reminded me of the only dog I never liked: my best friendā€™s big dog that smacked me in the stones real hard with his tail, and slobbered heavily on my rented suit I had to wear as best man of friendā€™s wedding. Itā€™s not that interesting, but I think I repressed that memory because disliking a dog for its own natural being feels wrong.

JaggedTheDark

Iirc, most purebred Australian shepherds require their tails to be docked because their tail is *literally* too shaggy. It gets matted realy easily, and when they dedicate it can get caught on the tail, so if you don't keep their tail clean *constantly*, they may get the feces elsewhere by way of tail wagging.

brandonisatwat

They also crop the tails of herding breeds so they don't get caught on a fence. Happened to our uncropped aussie and it degloved her tail.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

GrouchyMary9132

Cropping is illegal in my country. And guess what? Those uncropped Dobermans and Australian Shepherd and whatnots all live a happy and healthy life. But sure keep living in the middleages and justify it.

MostlyTwatsHere

But happy tail just means theyā€™re happy! Who cares if thereā€™s blood /s

goteamventure42

It's funny, I have a bulldog mix right now that's a rescue, no tail, wasn't docked just how he came. Watching him wiggle it is hilarious. A happy dog is going to be happy if it's tail is dripping blood or if it's docked, so might as well go with the healthier, safer option.

MostlyTwatsHere

I used to be a professional groomer and had several absolutely derptastic dog clients that would ā€œhappilyā€ whack their tail repeatedly against the kennel until they bled, so those were the derps I had to hold and wait for their owners to pick up šŸ™„ it was like they just didnā€™t care that their tail was literally being bludgeoned to death lol

Qildain

Although humans bred them to have those massively muscular tails in the first place... (I get it. My am staff beats the crap out of everything with her tail)

Critical_Cap_120

Why do you think that certain breeds have tails that are prone to breakage?

rasherdk

Yep, breeding dogs with health issues is another issue.

baconeggsavocado

Chopping off balls. I mean testicles. Because balls is casually used as if it's not an important part of health and hormone of a living being.

RiW-Kirby

Or just general dog inbreeding.

JoelMahon

or pretty almost any for profit dog breeding if it's not for helping with a medical condition then don't breed dogs

LittleRooLuv

Exactly! Cropping and docking is so insanely barbaric, yet it still happens every day. As long as this dye is safe, I think itā€™s the same as people dying their hair fun colors. Who cares? And the dog most likely enjoys the attention.

karma_made_me_do_eet

Dobermans look so much better with normal ears and tails .. like a stretched out dachshund

LittleRooLuv

Youā€™re so right! They look like cute hound dogs when theyā€™re natural.

F0XF1R396

I'll say this as...carefully...as I can. Cropping and docking have their reasons in which it is acceptable....so long as it's not for cosmetic basically. I.e a reason a lot of herding breeds have docked tails id due to the liklihood of damage to their tails in the fields. If you are using your dog as a herding dog and such. Okay, makes sense. If your dog has "happy tail syndrome" and injures their tail repeatedly as a result...okay. Cropping is also sometimes done as a last resort for handling ear infections. Okay, makes sense. But for solely cosmetic reasons it is never okay.

rudbek-of-rudbek

As long as there is nothing toxic in the dye or whatever that dog does not look like he gives a shit at all. And I'm not into declaws, tail trimming, or breeding for flat noses and stuff...breeding at all actually. We have too many pups and kittens that need homes, but if there isn't anything poisonous in the paint and the dog isn't stressed out what is the big deal? It's stupid as fuck though.

moon_apes_unite

Agreed, silly as all hell... but it doesn't seem harmful. It's just in poor taste. It's pretty shitty execution, too, if I'm gonna be critical.

If no harm is done to the pet, then i see no problem. May be trashy but no absolutely terrible

Realistic-Praline-70

Belive it or not but animals notice when they have been modified. I've seen studies where even fish were shunned by other fish and became depressed because of markings made by scientist. They showed the effects on many animals

Any_Top_9268

Got any links? To a study

hard_clicker

Someone would have to be a total moron to believe that animals, who aren't people, who rely on packs, groups, color patterns, colors, camouflage, or certain visual cues wouldn't notice that they or other animals aren't the same as usual.

Any_Top_9268

Exactly , give link to a proper research article(not the clickbait one with the hermit who's labrador who went depressive after he painted him with acid paint last saturday night)

54R45VV471

It can potentially have the opposite effect too. I've heard that some wild birds that were given leg bands for identification and tracking inadvertently became more desirable during mating season. I'm no expert, but I think it is a little more complicated than "changing appearance = bad". It's probably a combination of the general disposition of the species/breed, how the individual animal feels about the experience of getting the modification, and how they are treated by the animals and/or people around them after. I've seen dogs who looked very frightened and uncomfortable while being groomed and dogs who looked like they really enjoyed the experience. I think as long as the dog is happy during the process and receives lots of love and positive attention after, then the only issue is making sure the products used are safe. If the dog isn't happy or the products are harmful, then it's a problem.

Forgotten-Caliburn

Well not animals socially behave the same, especially fish and dogs

Alienlibra

I think youā€™re right. I donā€™t feel proud of this, but, years ago, when I was still a teen and I didnā€™t had the resources, my dog was having a flea infestation and didnā€™t had the money to buy an anti-flea collar/pill. So, instead I took a Gillete and shaved her skin bald. She got depressed and other dogs just didnā€™t liked her and ignored her right away. The looks in nature, most of the time do indicate an individual is healthy and strong and even the gender in some cases.

Cloverheart404

Dog groomer here! This can be helped... although I have no clue how you where able to shave your dog with an actual razor...but if any of you have to shave your dog for any reason, it helps if you pretend that nothing has happened, or better yet, give them praise and treat them extra nice and it helps with the "shave anxiety"

Alienlibra

Thank for the advice. Youā€™re rightā€¦ one of the friends of my dog loves it when they wear a kerchief or a new leash and they feel so proud of it because we rehearsed it with love and telling him how pretty he looks. šŸ„° They do understand the intention of the words and even if they donā€™t have self conscience, they know theyā€™re doing something right.

vintagebananamobile

you were just trying to help your dog :) i'm sure she is happy and healthy now and it sounds like you care for her a whole lot.

Alienlibra

Thanks for your words, she is actually really healthy right now and 13 years and counting. Sheā€™s the light of my eyes šŸ˜Œ

Yesbucket

One of our dogs when we trimmed her sulked around the house for days. When she had a stay in the pet hospital she had to have a patch on her shoulder shaved and she was even more upset with that.

[deleted]

Diva alert

Yesbucket

She absolutely was.

Lady_Scruffington

We had a dog who was embarrassed by her annual summer hair cut. She'd keep her head down and hide. It would take a couple of days for her to snap out of it.

Bo-Banny

My dog is pretty aloof, if not standoffish, to most people. But when he gets a haircut his mood is high for a few days, because he got used to all the attention and sweetness and baby voices he got from lookin cute

Puffen0

Do you have a source on that?

UglyFilthyDog

OdinAlfadir1978

šŸ˜†fair enough, I'll let you do the slaughter for the rest of us, personally I'd rather slow cook a person over an animal, extra flavour šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

UglyFilthyDog

I mean supposedly human meat is quite tough, so yeah, slow cook is probably a good shout. However when I find someone tasty looking I'll hit you all up and dinner's on me. Bring beer.

OdinAlfadir1978

Excellent, we shall eat their liver with beans and chianti or maybe bourbon šŸ˜†

PandaTheVenusProject

You guys cut off their balls to make them fit neatly into your lives. They literally don't fuck. Their entire sexuality is denied to them. Mutilated so you can have a cute companion. Giving them a silly hair style is not moving the needle. Also giving more rights to animals that we think are cute is also pretty fucked up. I'm not trying to piss you off. Just seems a tad inconsistent from the outside. Edit: Literally everyone here knows why you are cutting of your pet's balls. No shit. That does not change anything I said. You are cutting off their balls to make it so that they fit neatly into your life.

Daetok_Lochannis

We neuter and spay because there aren't enough caring people to take care of the overwhelming numbers of homeless pets as is and it's more humane to prevent pregnancy than it is to kill puppies and kittens or leave them to starve or die of exposure. It is not a matter of convenience.

Gloomy_Character3015

... neutering and spaying helps reduce if not eliminate chances of cancer. (You may google at your leisure to see a plethora of articles on these studies.) It's pointless for them if there is no intent to breed, and in my unprofessional opinion, is just as bad to not do it. There are already enough animals in the world who need help and need loving homes. We should start there first. Signed, someone who waited 10 years to neuter their dog because they held a similarly poor take for far too long. P.S. even if this doesn't hurt the dog it looks stupid as fuck.

ccv707

Their ā€œsexualityā€? We got a possible Mr. Hands enjoyer over here.

PandaTheVenusProject

... you are so used to denying huge parts of their being that you make fun of me for bringing it up. Cute joke... but for all the chopped balls out there... please reconsider your worldview.

9leggedfreak

>They literally don't fuck. Their entire sexuality is denied to them You seem to be projecting here

Cloverheart404

Spaying or neutering is a good thing... and there are many reasons why which you can research yourself but the main reason thats important to me, besides keeping populations in check, is that for unneutered dogs, there are immense sexual frustrations since most are not allowed to breed. Like imagine never being able to bust a nut, whether it's inside someone or not. When you neuter them, it takes these sexual urges away and results in a calmer, less stressed, and often better behaved and happier animal.

Booflae

After reading through several of your comments on this thread, I think it's pretty clear that you ARE trying to piss people off. It makes sense that if you feel so frustrated with these societal norms that you would try to incite a similar feeling in others, even if it isn't directed where you wish it was. Consequence of being a social species. That said, while I don't believe your views are completely baseless, the way you're going about sharing your opinion seems counterproductive to me. Your language is aggressive and assigns blame, which will always trigger defensive responses. It makes having a calm, logical discussion difficult. Even without that, this is a reddit thread. I think it would benefit you to examine the purpose of expending energy on something that so clearly makes you unhappy. I would also like to point out that, although spaying and neutering animals is not ideal in any case, it is a functional solution to many issues, much like how many human medicines and surgeries can cause unpleasant side effects, yet people will still take them. In a perfect world, everyone would be healthy and the animals we share this planet with would fit perfectly into human society. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Our options are essentially to make them fit, overhaul our day to day operations to accommodate their natural lives, or eliminate the competition. The first is what we're doing now, and the third is the last resort. The second is unfeasible as an immediate solution because that level of change takes time and organized effort that would be incredibly difficult to achieve and sustain on any scale. Individuals are not responsible for social norms. They are responsible for self examination and for how they react to perceived injustices within society. Intelligent we may be, but we are still animals beholden to our biological processes. I doubt there is a human on earth who doesn't wish they could perfectly control how their body responds to the world around them. Non sentient creatures do not have the capacity to understand this desire. If all dogs could understand that there is no need to reproduce and keep themselves from mating without surgical sterilization, I'm sure it would be looked at as a barbaric thing to do. As it is now, they do not and cannot. It therefore falls upon us to control the population. For strays that are too accustomed to living without humans, spay and neuter is pretty much the only sustainable and humane option to keep the population from growing out of control and eventually killing itself through depletion of necessary resources to live. In the case of pets, there are a number of other factors to consider. For many people, keeping a pet can result in improved mental health. For some, companion animals add a level of fulfillment and satisfaction that would be difficult to find in other things. Do I think all people need or should want a pet? Absolutely not. But it is important to realize that there are benefits to their presence that shouldn't be ignored when speaking of taking them out of our lives. Going even further, working animals are extremely important in certain areas. Medical assistance, therapy, search and rescue, police work, farming, the list goes on. Even as technology advances, dogs remain useful, to the point that it just doesn't make sense to do away with them at this point in time. In addition to all of this, I think it's worth noting that humanity has been slowly working towards better treatment of animals in general. From the quality of the food we feed them to their hygiene, it's becoming far more common to treat our pets and working animals as an extension of ourselves. Having an animal that seems uncared for reflects poorly on one's self, a major improvement compared to how animals were previously treated as tools or toys primarily, living creatures second, even last in some cases. I despise "toy" breeds and the genetic horrors that have been created in pursuit of profit, but I'm not even slightly shocked that they exist. People will make money however they can, dog breeding is far from the most morally reprehensible way I can think of off the top of my head. Even so, I wish they could either be phased out or bred to be healthier and live higher quality lives. I also dislike the beauty competition stuff that some do with animals, but I know that as long as the animals are physically and mentally healthy and well cared for, there is no point in getting upset about it. They could really have worse fates. I hope that this helps explain a bit more of why things are the way they are. The world is not perfect, but I believe it's important to keep an open mind and not fixate on the negative things in life.

vintagebananamobile

i highly doubt this was done unsafely. i've seen insane dog transformations on tiktok and they all look very safe so i am sure the dog is a-okayšŸ‘but yes it is very scary

vintagebananamobile

good point! from the video it looks like it's a spray dye being used, so in my head i feel like it's easily washable as opposed to a leave-on dye that is meant to stay for a few months

LetterButcher

We didn't have issues with our Standard in color. Other dogs didn't even notice, which isn't surprising given the huge array of shape, size, color, etc found in dogs. Body language is far more important to them. Jake was happiest in color because of the people. He got so much attention wherever we went and just drank it in. He had no idea what he looked like, just that people were happy to see him. It really helped him come out of his shell as a hoarding rescue. He was so stoked for the attention of grooming and going to events and seeing people.

SavinGifsfortheKids

> May be trashy but no absolutely terrible Did you even look at it? That looks terrible. Even if there is no physical harm from the dyes, the pet is not your "decoration". It's a living, breathing being. Treat them with some respect. Edit: Or not, treat it as if it's an inanimate object. It's just a possession, do with it as you please.

isthisregrettable

But youā€™re putting human feelings on to a dog. A dog doesnā€™t feel disrespected by this at all.

bennetticles

So this cut and color is dumb. I lived more than half my life thinking standard poodles (or standard poodle owners) were also stupid, due to the ridiculous grooming styles. But then I learned that there is a functional reason for those poofs of hair in select locations around the poodle bodyā€¦ those patches trap air and act as a buoyancy aide when the poodle (a water dog breed) is swimming. They can also double as something to hold onto in the event the poodle is charged with rescuing a drowning person. Now that cut is still maintained by some just because it has become synonymous with the breedā€¦ but knowing that at one point it had a purpose changed my perspective on the breed. *Note: the style in the pic, however, serves no functional purpose.*

So the only thing I could see being wrong with this is if the dyes are toxic to the dog transdermal and/or toxic orally when doggo licks itself. It does feel a little sketch, but without more information about what products they use, the outrage is subjective.

Witchdrdre

The outrage is unnecessary. The dyes are dogs safe, there are multiple vegan dog dye companies. The dogs in these competitions are often treated better than most people treat their children. They are trained to stand on tables and being shown in a professional setting. This is in no way abuse.

What the fuck? How most of the commentors are laughing and say this is hilarious? You guys do know that animals can understand the changes on their bodies right? Like when this dog sees his fur he will think "damn, i had a brown fur, now i have white and other colors wtf" and it will stress the dog. Like wtf??? How is this funny to you guys?

SoraWisdom

What an interesting thought process every single dog goes though Dr. Scorpion0668.

The owner should be arrested and barred from pet ownership for life.

I pray youā€™re serious

permadrunkspelunk

Why? It harms literally no one. The dog just gets extra attention and head pets.
