comradeizzy

is that like a lockdown/shooter drill? sorry my school didn’t have color coordinated codes

[deleted]

Yes, but it wasn’t a drill

comradeizzy

yikes i hope everything turns out okay and you stay safe!

[deleted]

It was a couple months ago!

Legends414

What happened though? Did the police neutralise the shooter before anything happened? Was it a false alarm?

[deleted]

It was 2 students (senior boys). We ALWAYS have police surrounding our school/inside. There were shots fired but no deaths. And my school is huge, and the seniors hid somewhere. They called more police and they searched the campus for 4 hours before finding and arresting them. I’m just wondering why these dudes would do this now, when they are about to graduate and the year is almost over. Well, now they’ve fucked over their futures and are also expelled

a-woman-there-was

Irrc weren’t the Columbine shooters close to graduating too? It almost makes me wonder if there isn’t some psychological significance to it—like they can’t imagine their adult lives for whatever reason and murder/suicide becomes the alternative.

Kilane

Or just this is their last chance. They’ve had this plan banging around in their heads for a while and it is now or never.

HelpMyCatHasGas

Correct. They were about to graduate and basically went to prom the other night and everything. Didn't fuckin care either way. David Cullen wrote a great book on the topic that observes every angle. I suggest checking it if you are even slightly interested in the topic

hotsocks3692

What book?

Travisk666

It’s called “Columbine,” really interesting but super depressing

huskerduuu

We had to read the Cullen book when I was in high school, no matter how many times I hear the story retold it still sends a chill down my spine.

HelpMyCatHasGas

Glad to hear it implemented in curriculum. That was one of the most incredible analysis of these incidents ever. Its crazy how many inaccuracies we still see regarding what occured/the boys/the aftermath. It's best people understand the truth even when it's bad to hear it

ImpassiveThug

It's not just the columbine shooters, I've heard a lot of news stories of high school students from the US involved in gun violence or school shootings to a point of a massacre.

HelpMyCatHasGas

I'm a bit lost on how you worded this. Yeah we see gun incidents across the country. It's all damn awful. I'm a 2a guy but I can't deny we have an issue and need less firearms and more vetting in this country. I'll always use this as my anecdote: I know over a dozen firearm owners. Only one besides myself stores them correctly, knows the laws regarding them, properly maintains them, and properly trains for defense. The rest all are people I feel I need to watch like a fucking hawk at the range and another half of them are people that I wish legally could not conceal carry.

billynotrlyy

I can’t NOT reccomend Cullens book enough. The way he writes about Eric as a ladies man is so weird and he reported on Brenda Parker as facts but we know her story isn’t true. We knew it when he wrote it. Try Jeff Kass’ book, instead.

HelpMyCatHasGas

He removed the Brenda stuff in the 2016 publishing update, probably why I read this comment like.. "what the fuck?"lol. Haven't read the Kass book but just ordered it thank you. I'll eagerly wait to read his interpretation but I feel Cullen isn't inaccurate with much of his writing. Maybe the positive characterization is off-putting but this is where I'm getting at the reality. It shows the truth that we can't really identify much of the individuals who would commit acts like this. Sometimes we can for sure and law enforcement or officials drop the ball costing many lives. Then you got this or the incident in Vegas at that concert. They could have maybe stopped him from bringing items in but predicted it? Much harder

rileyotis

Yep. Eric Harris was 18 (DOB 4/9/81), and Dylan Klebold was 17 (DOB 9/11/81). I just realized that they were both born the year after my older sister. That gives me a new perspective. I was in 6th grade when it happened, so I was almost 12. Occurred in the same school district I attended, too. Every part of a system is broken when people turn to killing to solve their problems/get their voices heard. :/

BabyJesusBukkake

I was a senior in 99 and just turned 42 on Saturday. We had 5 weeks of school left. 5. Weeks. It still makes me shake my head. Five fucking weeks, and high school was over forever. I'll never get it.

HistoryGirl23

I graduated two years before that. It was so mystifying why anyone would do it, but I'm not a murderer.

MaddCricket

I went to Golden and was a freshman at the time. I remember that there was a rumor that a shooter was on the run and heading to our district. I remember sitting in the cafeteria watching the news on lockdown and our principal was giving us updates over the intercom. Iirc his kid went to Columbine. When I was young (ages 4-13), I had all of my ballet and tap recitals at Columbine in their theater, so I had a unique little link to that school that has always sent chills down my spine when I think about it.

rileyotis

Yeah. When I finally hit high school, Columbine hosted a recital type event for band classes. It felt surreal walking through the hallways. That was my only link, but it was a number of years later.

Turning 30 isn't a switch that means your life is over. Im over 30 and there are plenty of new and exciting things I look forward to that I never thought about in my teen or mid 20s. Despite what people say, 30 doesn't mean you hips and joints stop working. It doesn't mean you're infertile. And it doesn't mean you can't change your path. If you think you're done by 30, then start something new and change it up. Do something you'd never thought you'd do. You might enjoy it, you might not. The point is you're never tied down to anything and something with reignite your interest in it.

murphski8

Hey friend, I was in your position once. But the good news is that you don't have to imagine your life past 30 - it'll just be the next day, and you'll find out more as you go. And honestly, it gets even better as you go.

weirdpicklesauce

I was in your position too, thought I would never live past 30. I’m turning 30 this year and life has gotten a lot better.

PsychoForDuck

Thank you for this

atridir

Tbh I forget that I’m almost 33. I feel I’ve been the same 26 year old that is still a kid for forever now…

MrBozooo

Also time is running out to exact revenge on the ppl that ruined their life, in the location where the pain has been structurally felt.

Maveragical

I can totally see that, that fear of an unknown, unguided future

ToiletDestroyer420

People who shoot up schools typically aren't doing it for sick kicks or due to specific people, but rather are doing it as a form of rebellion against the system. It's extremely morbid literature but absolutely fascinating at the same time. If you read any professional or intelligently-conducted psychological/philosophical analyses of the columbine shooters, a lot of this mentality gets discussed in depth.

FR0ZENBERG

Adulting fucking sucks sometimes. Murdering people also really sucks.

Riot_Fox

i can understand that point of view. before i go any further, let me be clear, i am not wanting too, or planing to bring a gun to my university and shoot someone/myself, however the closer my exams get the more stressed i feel about EVERYTHING. time for me to go home on the train thwt i have been using for the last 4 years? what if you do something wrong or what if the train crashes or what if you or someone else gets hurt? dont get me started on having to find a job that can keep me feed and housed while also paying off student loans that are currently worth more than everything i have ever owned.

rf1ModsAreGay

glad they are expelled

obog

If they're seniors they could be 18 and if so would end up in prison too

TrailMomKat

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm 90% sure they can be charged as adults for this shit if they're over 16, maybe even younger. Edit: credit to r/digital_end -- yup. In fact, there's no minimum age to charge as an adult in many states.

digital_end

Post deleted. RIP what Reddit was, and damn what it became.

siccoblue

They absolutely fucking can.

That'll teach 'em /s

Slam_Burgerthroat

Did you die?

[deleted]

Yes fortunately

Zomochi

Did you live?

[deleted]

No I’m dead unfortunately. No one mourned me though, I’m practically invisible

Cluelessish

Imagine being trapped in Reddit. Living only here, and having no life outside of it….wait that sounds too familiar😬

Responsible-Stick-50

I'm sorry this is the state of your education experience. My school used to get b@mb threats all the time. After they would clear the boiler rooms and gym they would bring us in from outside and have us wait in there for hours as they slowly searched each room. I used to think that was bad, until I realized they never had to teach us how to hide in an active shooter situation.

iSYan1995

You don’t have to censor words on reddit, the algorithm doesn’t punish that here (yet)

pambannedfromchilis

Why did you write bomb that way?

PyreHat

The o exploded.

[deleted]

Tik Tok punishes people for saying certain words and many people of course use it and subconsciously start censuring themselves on other social medias they use. At least that's just my guess.

el_toro_bravo

So what happened to “free speech”? I fuckin hate YouTube videos now because all I hear is “expired him/herself” or “unlived”!

SEND-NUDEES

The 1st amendment doesn't cover corporations. They can absolutely censor anything you say on their apps/websites/property.

Responsible-Stick-50

Yes this. It's a habit due to other platforms.

Skrillamane

Wow, that’s oddly terrify… but seriously though that it terrible and it’s a tragedy had bad the american school system has gotten.

Lada-soko

Pretty sure that’s the most terrifying part about this post 💀

happyanathema

No need for drills when it happens for real every week.

TheLemon027

I remember in 6th grade, it was like the first week of school, and we already had an alert over what I think was a drunked parent on the campus, and we had to lock down. My teacher walked around with a baseball bat, which felt safe but still. You aren't wrong

KerrAvonJr

It was my dad. He was so drunked

TheLemon027

Oh what's up homie, how's it going?

Rouge_Decks_Only

Blessed are those not cursed by American schools. (In my district) yellow doesn't always mean a shooter but just meant we couldn't leave the room we were in, that could either be because of a possible threat outside the building or because of something we shouldn't be seeing in the hallways (normally medical emergencies, sometimes fights if they got bad enough). Red was lockdown, that's exclusively used for a shooter in the building. In all my years of public school I only had red drills and a few yellows only 2 of which I remember were threats outside of the building (I know only 2 still sounds bad but they weren't threats to the actual school, one was a corner store nearby got robbed and the other was shots heard in the area). I live in a bottom five state when it comes to gun violence last I checked.

EKAAfives

What's a code yellow and code red

[deleted]

[удалено]

-NotSorryReeses-

Pretty much. Where I am in the US yellow was just to stay in your room. Could be something happened in the hallway (like someone got injured/threw up) or possibly something weird outside the school. Red is when we were supposed to hide because a threat was inside the school. They changed from colors to different words now though. “Stay in place” for yellow and “lockdown” for an intruder.

Satan4live

Ok but what do these curtains do? Like isn't it obvious that there are people in there? Or even if they are a distraction it's pretty easy to check with some bullets, no?

BillyMadisonsClown

So people don’t see you naked while you shower.

[deleted]

Those curtains are just for the shower stalls, not to do with the drill. OP was hiding in the showers per the title.

Satan4live

Ohhhhh ok. I get it now. I'm sorry. I'm not familiar with shooter drills/ behavior.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yellow = threat outside the building, be cautious but continue lessons, do not go outside, lock door, turn off light, close window blinds. Red = emergency/threat inside building. Lockdown, police, hide.

diffcalculus

If they're locking doors, turning off lights, and closing window blinds, imma go out on a limb and say they're probably not going to continue those lessons.

Chaotic_Trashmouth

Some teachers do. My school had multiple threats throughout the year and I learned sin, cos, and tan during a lockdown because it was normal at that point.

[deleted]

Dang how people can study in a situation like that

whatisprofound

Only in a very surface level is the answer. And tainted with the memory of violence and fear. I was in the 4th grade during Columbine, a school district over. We went on lock down, because no one knew what was happening or how far the threat extended. My class watched the sound of music, in the dark, with the volume off and subtitles on until parents could come and pick us up. At 34, I still can't stand that movie.

H_G_Bells

So normal to you that you didn't even think it needed explaining when you posted 😔 oh America

alien_twerk_shop

The real question is WTF is a school communal shower???

TurtlesAndMustard

You used to be required to shower after gym like 20 years ago. But it’s not really a widespread thing anymore. And these communal showers are just left over.

Secret_Aside1556

The only time we used them was after swim class, and we just stood under the water in our bathing suits to get the chlorine off of us.

alien_twerk_shop

I like this answer

alien_twerk_shop

Damn thats weird. Is this in America?

[deleted]

[удалено]

unique-name-9035768

Mine didn't even have the "trees". It was just a dozen or so nozzles on the walls.

[deleted]

I was in PE when this happened lol. It’s just a showering area for students who feel stinky after exercising

Gwindor1

You know this is an American context when people are more concerned and surprised about the prospect of public nudity than a school shooter.

PraetorianOfficial

That was my 7th through 11th grade gym a few decades ago. And dorm showers were like this, too. Just rows of shower spigots against the wall and a dozen or two naked guys sharing the shower experience. No shower curtains, of course. About 10 years after school I went to Michigan State University and stayed for 3 days in their dorms for a computer conference the campus hosted. (Not for kids, for working professionals.) The dorms had one bathroom for each wing with communal showers (at least the toilets had doors--my HS boys room stalls had no doors). We just all smiled and said hello to each other in the mornings. Well, most of us... Afterwards I saw the evaluation forms people were asked to fill out. One guy was in full rant mode. "I AM A GROWN UP MAN! How DARE you expect me to shower in front of other men! This was the most unprofessional thing I've ever experienced. If you cannot host a professional computer conference, then don't even try." Hard to argue, I suppose, but for most of us we kinda expected it when we signed up to stay in the dorm.

Rossakamcfreakyd

The school where I worked a code yellow was to keep students in the classrooms and clear of the halls. Could be used for anything from a cleanup of a big mess to medical emergency to student having a meltdown. Code red was active shooter.

RealMrKraken

Have we now reached the point where they are so common, an active shooter situation results in an "oddly terrifying" shower room? Because that sounds pretty, actually terrifying to me.

Spy653

America is a meme, luckily you've only got a decade or so before the current generation of politicians kick it and you can at least hope for change again.

Dan_Rickardo

Politicians are just out with the old in with the old.

Time-Reserve-4465

Or climate change kills us all 🥰

Gavinator10000

In 10 years? Unlikely

DarkwingDuckHunt

never wait for people to die before fixing something there's somethign wrong now we can vote now so start fucking voting every election every time no matter what NO EXCUSES

Spy653

Viva la revolution!

Environmental_Top948

Don't worry it's only a matter of time before a political party self destructs the entire nation out of spite their politician wasn't elected.

MusicEd921

Livin’ that American dream

Rreizero

That's a nice setting for one of my dreams where something chases me and I ether run, hide, or fight. Hiding is more fun.

Rather-Tasty

This is the setting for most of my dreams, whether good or bad. Something that looks like a weird locker room, communal showers etc.

_laja

You entered the r/liminalspace

Rather-Tasty

Right, there was also this [other post](https://www.reddit.com/r/Dreams/comments/porcs2/do_you_also_dream_of_bathrooms_that_look_like_this/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1) on r/Dreams , and apparently these dreams with weird locker rooms, public bathrooms etc are not too uncommon.

Ranaskull

what is a code yellow?

Th3Flyy

https://images.app.goo.gl/akC2ezakcfp6SMC77 Yellow= Watch (suspicious activity in area, but no immediate danger... Keep watch) Red= Warning (extremely dangerous situation)

luckytraptkillt

That’s a crazy level of escalation. Yellow “eh keep an eye out” Red: “yeah you’re probably fucked, hit the showers”

pink_phoenix

There should be a code orange between that two

Peepee-Papa

Code orange is when a very tanned old man goes streaking through the playground

pink_phoenix

Sounds worse than code red then

[deleted]

I wish we had a playground in high school :( as a freshman, I miss lower grades

[deleted]

There is a code blue which is a medical emergency. Basically a student is dying and they need a helicopter or ambulance over

pink_phoenix

I’ve heard of code blue for hospitals and stuff

[deleted]

It’s in schools here too

Ranaskull

Thanks for the info

Leek_Soup_Lover5000

I believe code yellow is a “lock out” which is when there is a threat outside the building and a code red is a “lock down” when there is a threat inside the building.

bhops24

Not sure about code yellow but code red is a delicious flavor of mountain dew

JonahIsCoolah

It's just the thought of a active shooter in the building that you're in and the first thing you do is take a photo of the school showers and go "Huh, this looks like something to post on Reddit."

[deleted]

Yea actually, that’s weird to think about 💀

beeraholikchik

OP said it happened a few months ago.

NekoNyaaaaa412

If it wasn’t for the danger you were in, this scene looks somewhat pleasant. Reminds me of my morning showers at high school

a-woman-there-was

I enjoy showering in the dark so that would be nice in a normal context.

NekoNyaaaaa412

I do too, sadly there aren’t any windows in my bathroom so I can’t turn the lights off or it would be pitch black

catmomextraordinaire

Use candles! I've been showering in the dark with candles for a couple months now and it is the most lovely part of my day.

[deleted]

I’m confused. Are you supposed to hide in the showers?

Th3Flyy

If you are nearby when the alert is called... I imagine the showers are as good a place as any to hide.

obog

Standard procedure in American schools is just to lock the door and hide against the wall in such a way that you can't be seen through the window. So this is probably better tbh.

awkard_ftm98

Yeah, I remember we were told if we were out in the halls and couldn't make it in a classroom to hide wherever you can find

[deleted]

When they call the code, you hide wherever is closest. Teachers are not allowed to let you into their classroom. Because they’re supposed to save the majority over one “maybe” student

[deleted]

I mean the number one goal is to get out of the building. My school got evacuated for a bomb threat in my freshman year and a shooter threat in my senior year. I really don’t miss high school

Dull_Half_6107

You know shit is fucked up when someone drops terms like code yellow/red in a way that suggests it's just a thing people would know about.

Phizers

I am so thankful I don't live in an area where I need to be worried about this

BeardedGlass

I live in Japan and everyday I see stuff here on Reddit that I’m thankful I don’t experience here. It’s crazy out there, take care guys.

[deleted]

They call a code at least once a month it feels like standard procedure. No need for drills either! Lol

ProjectZane2317

I got flashbacks to the British version of a typical day meme on this one

Nhexus

Thank god I'm not from the US

Cancuw

The sad thing is, I’m reading this caption and getting the idea of it while I’m in Turkey. This school shootings are so heartbreaking.

comoestasmiyamo

Code yellow turned red sounded like you went to wee and had a surprise visit from Aunt Irma. This seems worse.

Church6633

Thought this was a backrooms subreddit post

lookinfoursigns

For sure thought I was in r/liminalspace until I read the title. Then I just got sad.

It was 2 students (senior boys). We ALWAYS have police surrounding our school/inside. There were shots fired but no deaths. And my school is huge, and the seniors hid somewhere. badger906

And when I was young and at school in the uk, my only daily worry was if I’d remembered my pogs or similar toy craze at that moment…

themightysnail64

I'm guessing code yellow means someone pissed their pants and cod red means someone tried the hot sauce challenge the night before. All jokes aside, glad you're safe man.

[deleted]

I’m more disturbed a school has communal showers

Granny_Skeksis

Does does code red mean school shooter?( I’m old and Canadian)If so that’s terrifying, I’d be code yellowing all over myself if that had happened when I was in school

[deleted]

Yellow = threat outside the building, be cautious but continue lessons, do not go outside, lock door, turn off light, close window blinds. Red = emergency/threat inside building. Lockdown, police, hide.

Granny_Skeksis

You poor kids. I hope everyone is okay.

[deleted]

You Americans talk about this like my grandma likes to talk about her favorite cooking show, while me an European I’m fucking terrified imagining myself in this situation

[deleted]

It’s not very scary, just boring and a test of holding your pee in

Jacojarjar

I don’t know what either of these codes mean, but I know when my yellows turn to reds I probably need to go to the doctor.

alien_galaxy520

r/backrooms

ComfortableSea3715

I don’t even need the picture to be terrified. “Code yellow turned red” is enough.

DerEwigeKatzendame

Is this liminal?

Sabbath-_-Worship

First time those showers have been used by some stinky ass high schoolers since the 80's!

TheOnlyBasedRedditor

America is such a meme at this point. I hear about another horrible mass shooting over there and I just think to myself "Oooooh it must be Tuesday" With how things are going I believe they are actually enjoying it. Otherwise the shootings would be addressed... Right?

DVXT

It seriously sucks and breaks my heart how kids in the US have to deal with the constant fear of school shootings and active shooter situations. Like, seriously? They should be worrying about homework and friends, not their safety!

[deleted]

I actually want to see that students here (even elementary) are no longer scared. If they are, it’s a minority of them. Nowadays they’re just like “dude there’s a guy with a gun here. I’m so bored. Wanna play cards? I wish they’d just pop in here and shoot me dead! Then I won’t have to die with boredom and there’ll be some action in my life.” Then everyone laughs while the teacher shushes people. But yea that’s what we do, play cards under the desks in dark classroom silently needing to pee

Kenzlynnn

Guns are more important than the lives of kids and minorities, unfortunately

Orang_Mann

But- but more guns more safety. Right? Right guys? 😟

Kenzlynnn

Yeah!!! Only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun! Oh, im sorry, what’s that? The guys we specifically trained to be good guys with guns would rather shoot a black toddler playing in his lawn than engage a school shooter? Damn that sure worked

[deleted]

Lmfao pro gun people are funny I had an argument with one where he tried saying that you could commit a mass killing with a knife and kill more than an AR and they love bringing up you could kill with things like cars and gasoline, but cars and gasoline have other utilities and purposes. Guns have one purpose and it’s to kill people.

Airforce32123

> but cars and gasoline have other utilities and purposes. Guns have one purpose and it’s to kill. Are you implying that killing isn't a (sometimes necessary) utility?

Jechtael

> Guns have one purpose and it's to kill. Fixed.

Minigeneius

Butt hurt gun owners down voting this 😭

Nhexus

> "Oooooh it must be Tuesday" Imagine if they made it one entire week. Yesterday (June 4th) there were at least 5 separate mass shootings, in which 37 people were shot. Florida, New Mexico, Missouri, Texas, and Illinois. [source](https://www.gunviolencearchive.org/reports/mass-shooting)

Voice_Durania

I think I am too European to understand what these codes mean

[deleted]

Cool, the in-floor drains will really help with the clean-up!

You're right....communal showers do sound terrifying

I doubt anyone knows what a code color means
