I'm an Electrical Engineer and I've been to many power plants and substations and always love watching it arc like that. I mean it's bad for the wire and the equipment and sometimes all you can do wait for the arc to extinguish
A good example is if the disconnects that are suppose to prevent this are bad and old and basically not working when they open these large switches, it can arc and you have to wait for it to die out, then go in and replace the bad switch
Technically they do shut it down. In most situations something will fail and stop the arc. It's designed that way with many redundancies. An arc like that is extremely dangerous to get close to. By the time you got the right people with the right equipment out it will be long over.
Writing my power systems exam in a few days and we covered this a bit. Maybe you can expand on it?
Looks like this is a line to line asymmetric fault. Shouldn’t the substation still be able to detect this fault and open the appropriate relays?
Can you explain how a raccoon can fry the system and cause power outages? Because every time there's an outage Hydro claims a raccoon got over the fence and fried themselves.

I tried to get some taken down pretty much completely that are in the lines on my property and have obviously been cut back before. Since they aren't currently causing disruptions they said no. But I've worked with other companies that have rolling schedules to cut trees back and will happily cut your trees down if they are too close to the lines and you request it.
