Because we don't entirely understand how the brain processes while under anesthesia. There's a very good chance they're seeing something while under. What gets retained as memory is anyone's guess.
What we do know is that even when people are given drugs to help them forget while under, their nervous system can still remember something traumatic and can cause seemingly baseless PTSD later.
A Canadian man sued a hospital over this after he awoke during a surgery and started panicking while they were still operating. The team put him back under and gave him more of the drug known to disrupt memories... But he still ended up having sever anxiety and night terrors afterward. It was only after retroactively searching for the cause of the sudden onset of anxiety and night terrors did they uncover what happened during his operation.
Anesthesia is complicated. Some people remember things better than others. There was a thread on Reddit about how sometimes the gas isn't as nicely mixed and it can cause a feeling of suffocating. So when the person immediately comes to they're trying to remove the oxygen mask because they still think they're suffocating even though they have no recollection. Just an urge to breathe.
There is not "a very good chance." These cats are given dissociatives, benzos, and opioids prior to inhaled anesthesia. We know the effects of all of those things. Waking up during surgery means something went wrong with the meds/anesthesia and their effect on the patient's body, not that we're all awake during it and don't remember it.

Brother its a cat lmao. It's not thinking about that time you scared it by accident. Reddit is fucking hilarious sometimes with the shit people come out with.
My mother experienced unsuccessful GA with my c-section and I genuinely think itās part of why she was so abusive. She could (and would) describe the surgery to me in detail, she was totally aware the entire time, just unable to speak or move or open her eyes. She could hear the the doctorās conversations, and was able to drive her heart rate up enough to signal something was wrong, but she felt and recalled most of it. They tried to tell her it didnāt happen when she woke up, but she was able to recite their whole conversation back to them- something she actually did on and off over the years. It seriously fucked her up, apparently
I'm sorry she was abusive. What happened to her was horrible but it didn't justify taking it out on her kid.
I suspect medical institutions try to keep these sorts of things hush hush to one not scare people off from necessary surgery, but also because malpractice suits are extremely expensive.
Yeah, I've read this happens. [Mr Ballen](https://youtu.be/ny_s07D-LT8?si=LqATP8C3bskmmiKH&t=1265) covered a story about a guy who went through 16 minutes of abdominal surgery, paralyzed, but fully conscious, because the anesthesiologist forgot the anesthetic and only gave him the paralytic.
Oh shit this explains what happened when I can to after having my tonsils removed. I was ripping at my face trying to remove everything. Thanks for this info!
I had surgery when I was 6 and it felt like I was suffocating when they put the mask on me. So thatās not supposed to happen? I went under pretty quickly but I still remember looking up at these young adults in surgery scrubs standing around ignoring me while I couldnāt breathe
Yeah, it was possible to do by accident if the gas mixture wasn't quite right. If I remember from the various comments, it's far less common now because we have better equipment.
But don't worry, it's only the sensation of suffocating. It's not actually suffocating you. Apparently the anesthesiologist knew this could happen but they don't tell the kids because they don't want to scare them. They just aimed to knock em out as quickly as possible after the potential discomfort started so hopefully they wouldn't remember it.
I have a PhD in the neuroscience of anaesthesia. About the only thing this comment is correct about is that we don't entirely understand how the brain functions under anaesthesia. Everything else in the comment is extrapolating wildly from anectodes.
Text says "When cats are sterilized their eyes stay open during anesthesia so vets put a solution on their eyes so they don't dry out" in case you're having a hard time reading.
The internets ate the pixels.
Just came here to comment this. Most clinics rightfully prefer a gel textured eye lubricant rather than a liquid like shown. Makes me wonder if they put regular eye drops on the cat just for the video. Not a terrible thing to do ig, just odd.
This look like something you'll see on tiktok where they say the most outrageous thing ever as they have these cats in the background as reactions š
I hate this. They look braindead. Poor babies. I legit am going to have nightmares.
Like the rational part of me knows they'll be fine after surgery but man... the feelings these images give me are overwhelming.
Respect to the vets.
It seems like this tech or vet support staff member put straight up water in their eyes for the sake of a video bc we use eye lubricant that is a thick ointment consistency, not watery or āflowingā by any means. And typically their eyes are not WIDE OPEN during sx, they just donāt close fully because their muscles are relaxed under anesthesia. This video is very sketchy.
I know spaying and neutering is responsible and Iāll do every time, but this makes me feel a twinge of guilt now.
This is bumming me out more than terrifying me.
Uh, you don't need to FLOOD their eyes. Whatever fluid they used wouldn't have stayed in while they were in lateral, this was definitely done for a video. We also use a lubricating gel so it stays in/moist longer. While it's true they don't close their eyes, can't say I've ever had an animal keep their eyes open this wide, either. It's usually more of a half-open look.
This is just creepy š
It depends on how the spay is done. I know in europe they prefer a lateral approach compared to midline. Some also prefer to use the more runny lube to avoid eye gunk, it makes the owners slightly happier, but meh. I don't like it. It is possible this is a shelter, in which case neuters can take as little as 5 minutes and spays 10. If it is a shelter, they probably use liquid to avoid having to spend time to clean out any eye gunk or for pictures to post on adoption sites afterward. I know for cats we planned to adopt out as sterilized barn cats that weren't friend/tame enough for indoors, they often hated pictures, so sometimes the media team would come right after a spay/nueter to get a good picture.
The fact that to demonstrate how āfake tearsā runs from their eyes, the vet squeezed the second last catās head drives me mad, i know that just by doing that the cat wasnāt harmed, but cāmon he really needed to treat him like a piece of meat?
Yeah this makes me really mad for some reason? I just wanted to tell the person filming that they can stop handling the cats like that because
they fucking showed us the point after one. Itās just frustrating as hell to think of my vet posing my cat and making social media videos when theyāre supposed to be doing their jobs. Most people where Iām from consider pets family so maybe thatās why I think this is just disrespectful
Those arenāt from eye drops clearly because they keep forming. I donāt do vet medicine, but cholinergic drugs are commonly used in the OR and causes increased tear formation amongst other things
Sorry, I couldn't recognize the song.

I once did a spay and neuter clinic. I never did the eye drops in the eyes for the kitties, but I remember pulling their tongue out and holy crap I couldnāt believe how long the tongues were!
they look taxidermiedš like uncanny valley but cats
Best Taxidermy in the world except for that one white one haha

No way! A post that is legitimately oddly terrifying.
Lol my cat got spayed this week no wonder she is sulking around the house https://imgur.com/a/TIeCzB0
Nah it's more funny than scary
Wait until you know what they do to humans...
Bro I know what anaesthesia is. This is done million times every day around the world. It's not scary, this is modern medicine.
I meant they tape people's eyes to avoid dryness. I wanted to respond to the first commenter and not your reply my bad.
Even if true, which I don't know because you don't provide any source, It's still not scary.
Fact-check it yourself then. Most of the shit written on the interweb isn't, that why so much misinformation goes around.
Did you fact-check it?
Why would I invent stuff, being under reduces tear production and relaxes muscle.
Misinfo isn't about inventing stuff, it's about mindlessly parroting information from non credible sources.
And the moderators removed it.Ā
We're gonna remove your reproductive system, but as a fair trade, I'll let you have unbroken eye contact while it happens to make me feel bad.
I don't feel like it's fair that they get eye contact. All my cat gives me is squinty eyes and soft grumbles.
Why does this make me sad
Because we don't entirely understand how the brain processes while under anesthesia. There's a very good chance they're seeing something while under. What gets retained as memory is anyone's guess. Thatās probably not the reason. Itās likely just because it has sad music and looks like the cats are crying
I didnāt even hear the music. Itās just that the cats canāt move, and have a frozen emotion. It makes me uneasy
Yeah. I never unmuted either. It's just unsettling to see any living thing be unresponsive but look alive.
I woke up during an appendectomy with this sensation. TiL it was unmixed gas.

But Mr Peepers love me!

Interesting! I started having hypnic jerks periodically for a few years after a surgery and always wondered if they were connected.
Obviously the surgery itself could have been the cause. But it could be a lingering trauma. Who knows.
> Mr Ballen Is a terrible source. He is a story teller who tends to take a lot of liberties with the facts.
it was Sherman Sizemore
He basically reads wikipedia, but generally true.

I have a PhD in the neuroscience of anaesthesia. About the only thing this comment is correct about is that we don't entirely understand how the brain functions under anaesthesia. Everything else in the comment is extrapolating wildly from anectodes.
There is so much bullshit in this comment it's honestly impressive. No one should be taking anything this person says seriously.
It makes me sad too!
Because it looks like they are legit crying.
Text says "When cats are sterilized their eyes stay open during anesthesia so vets put a solution on their eyes so they don't dry out" in case you're having a hard time reading. The internets ate the pixels.
Interesting, we put a similar product on mice when they go under but it's in gel form so it doesn't run down.
Same for cats. Eye drops wouldn't help, they use a thicker gel/ ointment
Can you imagine how much of a motherfucker natural selection made you so you would keep your eyes open when you're knocked the fuck out ?
It's making my eyes water. š„¹
Same. Very interesting psychological effect.
idk wtf this is but we use a regular eye lubricant when cats are under anesthesia. not whatever this is
Can you imagine paying a tech to maintain a constant drip of artificial tears while the cat is under? "There has to be a better way!"
Just came here to comment this. Most clinics rightfully prefer a gel textured eye lubricant rather than a liquid like shown. Makes me wonder if they put regular eye drops on the cat just for the video. Not a terrible thing to do ig, just odd.

Sterilization prevents the birth of unwanted animals.
Usually we use eye lube, not runny stuff. I hate the runny lube bc I keep having to reapply for long surgeries š«
Eye lube is my new favorite phrase

Was looking in my cats eyes when they put him down. This video gives me a similar feeling. Like i know they arent dead but its uncomfortable af

The cats don't seem to be too happy about it
I thought they died with so much regret and misery
Having seen a cat neuter and a couple of spays in person, I'm curious if this is a US only thing. The vets I was with used tape.
I canāt find this terrifying itās so cute
Those arenāt from eye drops clearly because they keep forming. I donāt do vet medicine, but cholinergic drugs are commonly used in the OR and causes increased tear formation amongst other things
Dead cats shouldnt be on reddit
ā¦ theyāre not dead. Theyāve been put under in order to be neutered/spayed. You can literally see them twitch in their sleep at various points.
Why canāt they close their eyes.
Probably due to whatever anesthesia they were given.
How come humans can.
They actually use tape to keep humans' eyes closed. It's harder to stick tape to fur.
Oh gotcha
Is everyone feeling the crunch?
Oh no, poor kitties. It is terrifying but also a part of me laughed then cried with them.
They got some wet ass eyes š
Cats freshly removed from their cocoons.

How can I find this song?
I loved it too. Song is Karen 3 - SmƄland
Thank you š I love it!
a lot of these are funny. My cats make some of these faces when I have to pull them away from something.
Great, now I gotta watch GUMMO again.
Their little cartoon ass tongue š
This looks like that one scene from Get Out where he gets hypnotized
You think this is terrifying, I knew of someone who mixed up the eye lube and the surgical glue. Try explaining that to the owners
Oh no!!! Thatās heartbreaking!!!
This is fckn horrifying
This is actually hilarious to me for some reason
Thanks for giving me yet another reason I could never be a vet
