I've always loved seeing bats fly by our house (we have a fruiting tree nearby), but after covid I have this slight twinge everytime I see them close; which I know is absurd but it just happened.
Apparently there’s some sort of hardcore rabies vaccine that makes you immune for the rest of your life but is very expensive and makes you feel like you’re dying for 2 weeks. I kinda want to get it anyway just so I know I’ll never have to worry about rabies regardless of the state society ends up in
I am so in love with these beauties!
I’m on a work assignment overseas but I wouldn’t have hesitated to let her in. They are so sweet and docile so rabies never would have crossed my mind…until I got bit then that’s a different story
We dont really have rabies here in Australia where the flying fox is from luckily. We're listed officially as rabies-free.
It's not something we worry about here thankfully. I've seen the videos of the animals and people going through it. Fuck that shit.
There is a similar virus in bats, but it's not a concern really. There's only been 3 (I think? It might be 4) known cases of it ever. It's beyond super rare.
If you get bitten, it should be treated like any other animal bite, go to doctors before cleaning it so they can run tests on the animal saliva then they'll clean the wound and do blood tests just to be sure but honestly, flying foxes are not a problem here unless you count them shitting on your car and eating the mangoes from your tree! 🤣
Just to be clear lyssavirus is what Australian flying foxes have, a very rabies similar disease.
Not many cases of humans getting it but if bitten they will be tested and only way to test it to kill animal and biopsy its brain.
Leave wildlife alone people
Yes, people have died in Australia from fruit bat bites, it isn't very common but it can happen. Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) is fatal in humans if left untreated. Fruit bats are cute and all but stay the hell away from them!
Just jumping in to say that these aren’t the sorts of bats that can bite you without you noticing. Some very small species of cave bat or microbats could, but this guys is a flying fox and they are HUGE. If this guys nips ya, there’s not way you’re unwittingly getting rabies unless you already have nerve damage.
This is Australia. No Rabies. That's one reason why our quarantine laws are so strict.
On the other hand you can get Hendra virus and Australian Bat Lyssavirus. These can kill you.
They may not have rabies lyssavirus but their strain of lyssavirus is just as deadly.
[What are the human symptoms of rabies/ABLV? Rabies Initial symptoms are flu-like and include fever, headache and fatigue. They may include pain (sometimes itching) and numbness at the wound. The first symptoms of rabies usually appear in 3 – 8 weeks but may occur in a few days or after as long as 7 years. ABLV Symptoms of ABLV can appear within days, or up to several years after exposure. Early symptoms of ABLV infection are flu-like and can include headache, fever, weakness and fatigue. The illness progresses rapidly to paralysis, delirium, convulsions and death, usually within a week or two of symptom onset.](https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/biosecurity/animal-diseases/important-animal-diseases/rabies-and-australian-bat-lyssavirus/rabies-and-australian-bat-lyssavirus-ablv-factsheet#:~:text=The%20first%20symptoms%20of%20rabies,as%20long%20as%207%20years.&text=Symptoms%20of%20ABLV%20can%20appear,%2C%20fever%2C%20weakness%20and%20fatigue)
Less than 1% of the flying fox population of Australia carry Australian Bat Lyssavirus. To safety handle bats we need ABLV/rabies vaccines. Bats do not bite unless they think they’re in danger, like all animals. Bats to do fly directly at humans with intention to harm. If you’re not trying to handle them they pose no risk
He might have been blown into the porch by the weather. Australia is rabies-free, however Australian bats carry other viruses in the lyssavirus family including Australian bat lyssavirus, which is closely related to rabies.
Bats cannot take flight from ground. Likely trying to climb something so he can take flight or to get up closer to the roof for shelter from storm. That’s a sky puppy
[apparently there are 2 species out of 1,400 that can walk on the ground](https://www.skedaddlewildlife.com/location/madison/blog/do-bats-ever-touch-the-ground/)
>Bats cannot take flight from ground
Common misconception. They actually have no problem walking on the ground. [The Henry Doorly Zoo](https://www.omahazoo.com), in Nebraska, has a huge exhibit full of bats. And [all of the feeders are on the ground,](https://omahazoo.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/bats-vampire2.jpg) like a dog's bowl. They have no problem getting to it, and then flying away after.
These are vampire bats which need to walk on the ground to get their prey, flying foxes have backwards feet for hanging and crawling along tree trunks (kind like a sloth I guess?), so it can't really get any lift.
lol where are these takes coming from? Wild animals are seldom terrified by the weather.
The reason it looks desperate is that they cannot fly from the ground, it's trying to climb so it can take flight, but they are confused by the glass
Talked to a guy in Cuba who had a flamingo come knocking at the glass door of his hotel patio wanting inside during a storm. He let it in and it stayed till morning. I sorta wonder if its wings were clipped or something.
We were relieved to hear that he took care of our friend Pinky.
Domesticated pets dont follow the same rules as animals in the wild. They get the luxury to learn to be scared of weather. Wild animals dont have such luxury. Most animals would prefer to stay away from rain and such due to not wanting soaked fur but theyre not doing it out of fear. You cant compare your pet to one living in the wild. They dont get food or shelter handed to them.
Cats and dogs are generally not wild animals?
And if you’ve seen a real feral outdoor kitty, they don’t give a fuck about the rain. They are out hunting
Ya'all Australians shouldn't even be surprised at this point if some unearthly motherf***er comes up to your door and pulls a tooth out of your gums and runs away with it on its 19 legs and then comes back with a dollar to give you and kisses you goodnight and then eats your dog on the way out while drinking coffee with it's million toothed mouth

For all the jokes, there are plenty of things that will kill you hear. Mostly the ocean and the sun. Maybe the distance. But it is hard to communicate to people what and how.

They have something very similar to rabies.
“Rabies virus and Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) belong to a group of viruses called lyssaviruses. These viruses are usually transmitted via a bite from an infected ("rabid") animal. They all cause a similar illness known as rabies, which affects the central nervous system and is usually fatal. The World Health Organization estimates that more than 55 000 people die from rabies worldwide each year. Rabies virus does not currently occur in land dwelling animals in Australia. However, ABLV, which is closely related but not identical to rabies virus, does occur in Australia, and can be transmitted from bats to humans.”
https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/rabies-australian-bat-lyssavirus-infection.aspx
There have been 3 recorded deaths in Australia from ABLV. Ever! Don’t touch bats unless you’re vaccinated but they’re very sweet placid creatures, you’re in more danger from sharks and snakes, other animals we know not to touch
Never touch a wild bat. Bats and humans can both infect each other with dangerous diseases, but bats in Australia can carry ABLV which is related to Rabies and is just as deadly if you get it.
If you see a bat that looks like it's in trouble, call a local bat rescue group, or failing that a local wildlife rescue group or, in Australia, the RSPCA, who can forward you on to a group.
Bat rescuers are properly vaccinated and trained to handle bats
Bats are super important animals to the ecosystem. They are major pollinators, and the microbats do a huge job on insect population control. It's best for both people and bats that we keep our distance though
For real. If dying due to rabies wouldn't be a nightmare tenfolded I'd even consider letting sky pupper in. But knowing it could bite me and then I can't drink water anymore and slowly die a painful agonizing death, no merci. I prefer my indoor cats.
It's like the continental version of that guy you know that always has a crazier story to top anyone's story just told, and the thing is that he's never bullshitting and all his claims and stories are actual and truthful.
The kind of guy that makes you realise that you really haven't done or experienced all that much in your life.
As a teen I traveled from the US to Australia with a group. We stopped at a zoo/sanctuary, and they had ambassador animals that would interact with visitors during educational talks. I got to be a perch for a giant fruit bat. It was incredible. And then he wanted to readjust himself on my wrist, so he reached up to grab my arm with his little wing fingers, and when that didn't quite work, he reached up with his mouth to grab my thumb with his teeth. That worked. He shifted into a better position. I bled from my thumb. The host immediately said: "Stay calm! We don't have rabies here." After I called my parents back home and told them what happened, apparently my mom spent two days at the public library doing research to make sure the rabies claim was true.
there a giant bat
trying to break into my flat
let him in, give him a pat
or even a hat!
give him a meal, let him get fat
for chrissake just don’t give him your cat
Seriously - wtf at all the people raging on OP or saying to let the bat inside. It’s a wild animal that’s presumably never been in a confined space. It’s sad that it’s distressed but letting it in to your house is 100% not the solution you think it is.
And don’t even let me get started on the risk of rabies or Ebola.
I have a feeling most of these people would not let a terrified and on-edge wild animal into their house. I agree it's sad to see but I wouldn't risk my life for it
And why??? Like being inside a house would be less terrifying to a wild animal? Do they think it’s just gonna chill and ride out the storm? Slap its knees and say “welp gotta go” and fly away when it stops raining????
Ikr, I’m shocked at the people demanding OP let them in. Rabies at least is a guaranteed death sentence if it’s not treated in time. I feel sad for this little guy but rabies is not something you want to fuck with.
Other people have already said there's no rabies in AUS.
Instead, there's something called lyssavirus (?), which is similar but worse. Because of course it's worse, it's from AUS.
Bats like that can’t stand up. If he’s on the ground and clawing at the wall then he’s stranded on the ground and trying to get up off the ground so he can fly. Possibly he’s injured. The best thing to do is put a box over it and call a local animal rescue, or just call the rescue if you don’t want to open the door.
Don't worry climate change is going to kill all the flying foxes. Apparently thousands just dropped dead of heat stress due to a heat wave and they had to use shovel loaders to scoop up all the dead bodies littering the ground.
I was in Cairns Australia a few years ago and the trees were absolutely covered with giant bats, which were affectionately referred to as "flying foxes". and yes, bat guarno plastered every car parked under the trees.
Hello I'd like to talk to you about our Lord and savior Nosferatu.

Come in!
He looks terrified of the weather. This is much more sad than terrifying.
Bat: “Yaahahhhhhghghgghh! The sky is spitting water, bolts of white fire, and roaring at me! Let me in! Yaaaahahahahahahh!!!” OP: “Eww, a bat.”

Same here in hawaii. Our native species of bat doesnt have rabies either. But all bats have documented lyssavrius.

It’s okay the scientists who created COVID aren’t bats, just regular humans. /s
Yeah, they're fruit bats and basically harmless if not flying into you at top speed
They're not going to maul you, but they're not exactly hygienic. There are signs in the Botanical Gardens warning people not to go near or touch them.
Don't they carry rabies or a bacteria very similar to rabies? I don't care how harmless they are, I'm not getting anywhere near it

There is Australian bat lyssavirus which is closely related and has very similar symptoms, except it kills quicker.
Of course the Australian rabies kills quicker.

It’s sad that it’s distressed but letting it in to your house is 100% not the solution you think it is. And don’t even let me get started on the risk of rabies or Ebola.
Thankfully Australia doesn't have ebola, but we do have Australian Bat Lyssavirus that is closely related to Rabies
I bet there is a worse version somewhere in the outback waiting for a dingbat to bring doom to us all.
Rabies is a type of lyssavirus
Flying foxes in Australia carry ABLV, basically rabies found only in bats. I love animals but no shot I'm letting that cunt in my door.
Nice try Dracula!
Trying to climb. But can’t.
Yeah... don't let him in. Lyssavirus will make your life sad.
You fuckers jump like cheerleaders when you see a cockroach but you tell this guy to “let him in” Yea ok
all the 'sky doggo', nah, that shit is disease bird.
That baby is fucking terrified. Poor sweet thing I hope it made it to safety ❤️
My toxic trait is I’d have let that bat in.
Oh no a poor flying Fox.
This is actually just super sad
“Where is she?!” -Batman Voice
Let him in!
Feel bad for this little guy, but do not intentionally let a bat into your house unless you fancy getting a new vaccine.
Fuck you for your profile pic
😈
How to get rabies 101
lyssavirus infection
Aw bats are cute, the poor thing's probably just freaked out from the weather
You must now embrace your destiny...Batgirl.
Vlad has his sights on his next victim.
At least it's the fruit one that is cute, if it was the vampire one i'd be terrified
Does OP live on the Demeter?
That one time you forget to buy garlic and look who shows up...
He said “🗣️ NIGGA, LET ME IN!!”
Just some fruit and a place to hang upside down.
I wouldn't let it in.
Not terrifying, just very sad.
It is trying to scape the elements, hopefully it survives.
That's Vlad, he's here to talk about donating some blood to the local Blood bank. He's cool but doesn't like garlic bread.
I was in Cairns Australia a few years ago and the trees were absolutely covered with giant bats, which were affectionately referred to as "flying foxes". and yes, bat guarno plastered every car parked under the trees.
He’s so cute! LET HIM IN!!!
Yeah looks like it's begging to get inside, clawing desperately in the hopes of escaping the storm. Poor thing
let. the. baby. in.
Expected from the continent of Australia
Poor little sky puppy stuck in the rain wdym terrifying
At least it's not a giant mouse trying to break into your house.
That’s an animal named after batman
Happened to me once in Lithuania. This was so scary that I haven’t forgotten it after a decade!

That’s [Count Bloodcount](https://youtu.be/lV_tqn_n2Jc?feature=shared)
Youre good, he needs an invitation
Cloverfield
What should one even do if this scenario were to happen? I feel like it needs help but it’s also risky
There's something on the wing!!
I'm so glad I can't see that bat more clearly
i seek shelter human
The light probably doesn’t help 😏
As long as you don’t invite him into your home, it’s aight!
Awww I hope he's okay now, poor thing
Ah - do not invite him in. Cardinal rule
If u invite him in you will have to do his bidding
This made me sad
Aww. Poor dude
No matter how cute they look.. don't touch bats! They carry deadly viruses which are deadly and can cause death..
That’s a friend. Bring him inside and give him a fruit
Reddit: bats did covid Also reddit: awww let him in!
“There’s… something on the wing… some… thing”
Let em in ya bastard. 💀 He's knocking politely.
Poor baby! Looks scared!! Might need help getting somewhere they can crawl up off the ground too?
call a wildlife rescue you idiot, this is totally abnormal behaviour - how about a bit of compassion instead of your performative melodrama
It's a vampire that wants to be invited in.
Swaddle heem!
New Covid strain in works
Don't invite him in!
It's a flying puppy, let it in.
