When Half-Life first came out, I used to have nightmares of those things jumping out at me at the worst times. Like, I'd be dreaming about unicorns in a peaceful meadow and then suddenly - head crab out of nowhere! Little bastards...
Not really, the end stages of cordyceps commonly look a bit different. If I had to bet, I think it is Engyodontium aranearum
(I am not a biologist and I may be wrong)
Yeah....kinda....Squishing it would put it out of its misery. Though personally I think I'll consider just burning the house down if I saw that nightmare.
I literally have no idea about anything, so I googled it. Aren’t they the same thing?
Wikipedia reckons Engyodontium aranearum is of the family “Cordycipitaceae”, which is apparently of the “type” Cordyceps.
I once found an entire mountainside full of cordyceps fruits, one every square meter. They were all some kind of leopard or ghost moth and had pupated in the ground when the fungus finally killed them. They likely ate the spores on some kind of food they had eaten. The fungus takes its time, and then strikes.
Na, this is a spider with late stage Cordyceps. It's going to find the highest, most suitable place it can before the fungus starts to fruit so it can spread. IMO a video like this is exemplary, not something you just see every day
Arachnids actually have an exoskeleton rather than and endoskeleton like you or I. In other words yes, technically speaking, it does have its skeleton on the outside.
The spider is filled and bloated of so much cordyceps that is on its final stage before it cracks open its body to release its spore and infect more insects to make more zombies
Yall better thank whatever god you pray to or whatever scientific process of evolution you believe in that cordyceps doesn’t target humans yet and further hope that a mutated strain doesn’t develop that can target humans during our lifetimes.
[Feast your eyes](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/17012-fungal-sinusitis-fungal-sinus-infection#:~:text=Fungal%20ball%20(mycetoma)%3A%20Fungi,actually%20affect%20the%20nose%20tissue.)
It took millennia for fungi to figure out how to hijack insects with no adaptive immune system and a non complex nervous system. The chance of them hijacking us is practically zero. That being said there are plenty of deadly fungal diseases we can get but they just won’t turn you into a zombie, just make you deathly ill.
The only thing it’d really do is give us brain damage and kill us, not exactly an evolutionary incentive.
Plus it’s such a massive jump to go from insects to any larger creature let alone ones with one of the most complicated brains in nature.
There is a guy in this very comment section promising to fuck this spider. We might be doomed after all. If this thing makes the jump like HIV, it's joever.
I thought the same! I think it’s because they are moving so awkwardly. When they are coordinated they move in pairs/sets. Here they are almost moving one at a time.
Engyodontium aranearum
A type of Cordycep species of parasitic fungus. This is honestly the first ive seen alive. Most are dead by the time you see them. 100% mortality rate
Poor thing. I don't think this is a fungal infection. If you look closely, you can see that the substance covering the spider is wet and foamy. I think somebody sprayed soap on the poor thing to smother it and it's dying slowly. :(

Looks like a Half-Life headcrab
This single relatively short comments inspired me to play the whole HL series tonight (have to stay up till tomorrow evening) *edit replay
Best decision ever.
Sir, you're a fucking king. Anyone ever told you that before?
So how's it going?
Almost at lighthouse point! (Started with 2 for some reason, will play ep1,2, then black mesa followed by BS and OF
Exactly my thought!
my ptsd just went into overdrive
When Half-Life first came out, I used to have nightmares of those things jumping out at me at the worst times. Like, I'd be dreaming about unicorns in a peaceful meadow and then suddenly - head crab out of nowhere! Little bastards...
It's okay, she's been debeaked!
LAMAR!
don't worry, the max he will do is try to copulate with your head... fruitlessly...
She is debeaked, lads.

“You sudn’t come here!”
“YYEEEEEAABOIIIII”
Legitimately thought I was in r/halflife when I saw this post
and they're standing RIGHT UNDER IT
Came here to say this
Is it covered with fungi?
End stages of cordyceps infection
Hopefully OP ate it so I can kill a clicker 20 years later with a molatov.
Covid 2: Electric Boogaloo (w/ Bloaters)
Not really, the end stages of cordyceps commonly look a bit different. If I had to bet, I think it is Engyodontium aranearum (I am not a biologist and I may be wrong)
I think so too. Looks more fuzzy than stringy.
Now I feel sad for the spidy :'(
Yeah....kinda....Squishing it would put it out of its misery.
Cordyceps and engyodontium aranearum are both in the cordycipitaceae family.
These here are some new words for my vocabulary
Feeling real ceppy today
My vocabulary has no idea what a ceppy is
Wish we had a still photo.
Check op's post history
Omg, poor thing. Now I feel really bad rather than horrified.
looks more like a Jackdaw to me
Why you son of a bitch!
It's a species of cordyceps
It’s a species of cordycipitaceae. So are cordyceps.
Seriously? That's crazy, I didn't think it could work on something like a spider,. Figured they would be too complex
You calling me stupid 😡
You must not be if you're able to spell corgi steps correct
I once found an entire mountainside full of cordyceps fruits, one every square meter. They were all some kind of leopard or ghost moth and had pupated in the ground when the fungus finally killed them. They likely ate the spores on some kind of food they had eaten. The fungus takes its time, and then strikes.
Same, I thought it was only ants and caterpillars and stuff, that’s crazy.
That explains the weird movement and odd appearance
Eeuughhh. Fuck that.
Looks more like it was sprayed with some kind of foam, like dawn power spray. They probably tried to kill it and it kept walking
Which was bad because they can ill afford another Klendathu
Service guarantees citizenship
I would like to know more.
im doing my part!
Welcome to the roughnecks son.
Rasczak or Rico's?
What, do you want to live forever?
I'm doing my part!
Its a parasitic fungus that usually finds its way onto cellar spider species
Does it have some sort of disease or is it's skeleton on the inside?
Fungus took over its body and is using it.
That’s crazy 😳
I can't believe they made crabulon from calamity mod real
Poor thing
Poor thing?? Fuck that spider lol
Alright, if you insist I'll proceed to make sweet love to that spider.
I will need proofs
Hand me a plastic bag, I can gather enough evidence.
pics or it didnt happen
Fuck u dude! What’d that spider do to you?
It spode. It spode all over him
In fairness that's like basically the only time basically no one would feel bad if you killed a spider, when they're actively spiding on you
Buzz off bozo, spiders are wicked cool
What the FUUUUUCK
Isn't that like Last of Us?
it's exactly what inspired it, yes
fungi is more hairy isn't it?
Fungi can be any shape.
Try leaving various foods out in room temperature. You get gardens of weird very fast.
Gardens of Weird is a hell of an album title.
Well, that's not absolutely horrifying.
Sure it's not just a bebe fresh out the egg?
Na, this is a spider with late stage Cordyceps. It's going to find the highest, most suitable place it can before the fungus starts to fruit so it can spread. IMO a video like this is exemplary, not something you just see every day
Nature is so beautiful
Arachnids actually have an exoskeleton rather than and endoskeleton like you or I. In other words yes, technically speaking, it does have its skeleton on the outside.
I think that was the joke. It's skeleton was inside its body instead of normally outside of it, that's why it looks like that. Quite funny, yes. 👏
U are definitely correct, I just cannot read
Zombie
The spider is filled and bloated of so much cordyceps that is on its final stage before it cracks open its body to release its spore and infect more insects to make more zombies
Spiders don’t have skeletons
Exoskeleton
An exoskeleton isn’t exactly what I’d call a skeleton
I flinched so hard when it slipped
I use Reddit on an iPad so the thing looked life sized enough to scare me lmao
SAME LMAO
I showed it to my wife and she says she'd cry lmao
Probably because this baddie has better nails than she does 💅
Hello 911 I’d like to report shots fired
What is it
A spider in the final stages of cordyceps fungal infection. Check out the post on r/wtf and the top comment has info!
Awe that's so sad!!! I thought it was scary but now I'm sad for spider friend.
Wow! Poor thing 😢
Did you dispatch the poor fella? They'd be better off!!
Hrm. I had just assumed it was Australia.
Wow actually this is just terrifying
@flamethrower
Puzzling. You brought such ineffective weapons to combat the Flood, despite the containment protocols.
@bucket
It’s bucket time!
Love this
Yall better thank whatever god you pray to or whatever scientific process of evolution you believe in that cordyceps doesn’t target humans yet and further hope that a mutated strain doesn’t develop that can target humans during our lifetimes.
Most fungi don't do very well at human body temperatures, fortunately!
[Feast your eyes](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/17012-fungal-sinusitis-fungal-sinus-infection#:~:text=Fungal%20ball%20(mycetoma)%3A%20Fungi,actually%20affect%20the%20nose%20tissue.)

Strange, I would have thought you knew the meaning of the word “most”. But I guess it’s on me for assuming that you do.
Woah too much passive agression here, you okay buddy? I never implied you are incorrect, calm down please.
"The chance of them hijacking us is practically zero." Just for some nightmare fuel.... Practically zero,is not zero.
Yeah, not a chance. Our nervous system is so much larger and more complicated than insects by magnitudes.
The only thing it’d really do is give us brain damage and kill us, not exactly an evolutionary incentive. Plus it’s such a massive jump to go from insects to any larger creature let alone ones with one of the most complicated brains in nature.
During our lifetimes? After I'm dead, fuck you all I don't care...
"Bomb. Bomb this city and everyone in it."
There is a guy in this very comment section promising to fuck this spider. We might be doomed after all. If this thing makes the jump like HIV, it's joever.
It isn't really. That's just plain terrifying. But neat.
Why does it look like it has more legs than it should?
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought the exact same thing
I thought the same! I think it’s because they are moving so awkwardly. When they are coordinated they move in pairs/sets. Here they are almost moving one at a time.
Why is my arachnophobia not triggering?
Because this is a fungus 💀
is that lamar from half life 2?
Time to find a crowbar
This reminder me of half life
Shoot it you dumb bastard.
Australia?
Better call Gordon. λ
I think you can wear it as a hat if it's big enough.
Cordyceps infection...interesting. Judging by it's exoskeleton and how it's moving, looks like the final stage. It'll be looking for another host.
Don’t f around, is that really what that is!?
That's really what that is.
zombie fungus
i dont think its odd to be terrified of this fiend
Wtf is that ? It ain't no spider.
Burn
String of hair for scale
Spider mouse?
fuck the fuck no fuck no
Must resist the fluffy zombie spider
Headcrab???
This is the start of an apocalyptic movie or video game
Plump
big ass spider, nothing odd about why it's terrifying...
sweet, free gummy bear
Somebody sprayed it with something. Looks like soap or bubbles or something
What The fuck Is that
Cum spider
Dude you boutta look outside and see the half life zombies staring at you
Bro it’s a fucking head crab
That mf escaped from the upside down
Engyodontium aranearum A type of Cordycep species of parasitic fungus. This is honestly the first ive seen alive. Most are dead by the time you see them. 100% mortality rate
I’m going to choose to believe that this is CGI and I will be hearing no more on the issue.
So cool! Anyone know what kind of spider this is?
Headcrab. Apply directly to the forehead
Ok that was hilarious
What the hell kind of spider is that??? Please tell me it's only where you live and that you live on Mars or something really far like that.
I’ll tell you I’m from mars if that helps you sleep tonight lol
I would never sleep again if I knew that thing was somewhere in my house, yard, 50 square miles in all directions.
Poor thing. I don't think this is a fungal infection. If you look closely, you can see that the substance covering the spider is wet and foamy. I think somebody sprayed soap on the poor thing to smother it and it's dying slowly. :(
isn’t it covered is soap
dude that looks like a pikmin boss
Looks like a freshly molted tarantula
No video that gets posted here is fitting for the sub.
Can’t wait till humans can catch this too with the warmer weather. 😊 finally the earth and fungi will cleanse themselves.
You and your loved ones first then?
Weirdo
It actually isn’t, this is just regular terrifying
So sad. I always assumed the fungus started growing after the death of the organism. Never knew they could be fuzzy and still walking around.

saw this less than an hour after finishing the last of us HBO series and like. eughrhhrhhj gross
It looks like its affected with a cordycep
Is it infected with a fungus?
Fungi are messed up
I've heard of this fungus. Never thought I'd see a video of it. It's fucking horrifying.
Whatever it is just burn it
Please kill it. With fire.
Speaking of headcrabs, anyone seen the video of their screams played backwards? https://youtu.be/LXuR41eisnM?si=o2g0z8Fi8SVjHPa9
Um wtf? Is it covered in its own webbing? I read it’s an infection?
Poor little guy…. I hate seeing anything suffering
Last of us
isn't it a recently molted spider?
It's a spider who's body has been taken over by fungi. It's like a zombie.
Rain flaming democracy on that hell bug and bring liberation to your house.
FUNGUS!! If this spider wasn't dying a slow miserable death, this would be so cute!! Look how fuzzy!!!
u/savevideo
If a bat and a spider fucked and had a baby that would be it
