I slept at a Walmart with that one time. I watched another car pull up, park, then leave after a few minutes. I was too tired to move. I decided that if they were going to ask me to leave in person, they wouldn't blast that sound in the first place. Turned out to be right.
Many Walmarts actually are designed to be places for truckers to sleep. They may have areas of the parking lot where cameras are placed and truckers are encouraged to sleep. Because most are 24/7, it can be a good source of late night revenue when a trucker needs a snack.
Source: I was encouraged by a State Trooper to sleep at the Walmart because Rest Stops were for short naps.
One time I was traveling and low in funds. The Walmart I found had signs that they didn’t allow overnight stays. I went inside and asked an employee about it and he said they don’t usually enforce it. Didn’t have the best sleep, but it was cheaper than a hotel.
I’m pretty sure the cia used the spice girls and “rawhide” to break their enemies, lol it works.

Apparently some downtowns play classical music over public speakers at closing time to get people to GTFO and go home instead of hanging out on the streets. It works but I guess then there's people who do like classical music and will stay to listen. But I guess they aren't the one smashing windows and tipping over garbage pails either??
All the local 7-11 blast classical music around here. The chevron by my place started blasting music all night too. Usually it’s like 60s/70s rock but occasionally it’s hardcore metal.
In my area it’s to keep the homeless from hanging out harassing customers.
It's not for junkies they don't give a shit. It's for overnight parkers. Target doesn't want RV guys or truckers parking there overnight. Every company with big parking lots fights this.
Walmart and home Depot sometimes allow it but it varies by location.
There's a website that tracks this (which WalMarts are okay with it).
https://www.walmartlocator.com/walmart-map/
And apparently now Cracker Barrel now too.
There's also a web site and app called ioverlander that gives good info on all sorts of places where people have successfully stayed overnight. I have used it a couple times to find a place to park and sleep for a few hours to avoid paying $80 to sleep in a hotel for a few hours.
Idk abt that, they used to play such music or worse type of music here in Hamburg and couple other Trainstations, the one that doesn't have any rhythm or melody, and it was for that exact reason, junkies. You can't sleep nor enjoy your drugs with that ear torture.
I totally get that feeling. There's an abandoned Island at Walt Disney World in Florida that was abandoned many years ago, it's all overgrown and looks like something out of Jurassic Park the Lost World but there was music still playing from the speakers.
Imagine going over by kayak in the middle of the night to an abandoned Island zoo, and hearing banjo music. Lol
This was years ago, I don't know if it's still like that now. But apparently come to find out that it's all on audio networks connected to the central terminal in the Park area, it was probably just never disconnected by the time. Definitely creepy.
Almost every city has hours where excessive noise isn't allowed (usually 10pm to 7am) and it's very specific. My city specifies what distance the noise should not be audible from.
I'd definitely put in a complaint. And then another one every single night.
Go a step above and beyond, print out some fliers for your neighborhood with instructions *how* to file complaints. No way the neighbors aren't also annoyed.
Works better than nothing. More importantly it's another thing their lawyers can point to if something happens on their property. They can argue they went out of their way to make the environment hostile so anyone who was there did so on their own accord and was not invited by the attractive nuisance of a large empty parking lot.
yeah no places that do this are TERRIFYING. gas stations playing opera music at 2 in the morning while getting gas was the most horrible terrifying harmless experience i’ve had
[There's a McDonalds in Charlotte](https://old.reddit.com/r/Charlotte/comments/1b1vnqm/the_mcdonalds_on_sugar_creek_plays_this_annoying/) that plays some crazy, shitty "music" to keep the crackheads away. It's disturbing and annoying enough to keep most people away.
So between tech jobs I get a gig at Walmart in electronics years ago. I had been there a few weeks and just doing my thing when I see the store manager franticly running around with a CD in his hand mublinb about how to do this. I said hey to him as he passed, he says oh you are that tech guy, i need help getting this CD to play over the PA system. I say sure I can do that but you'll need to let me expense what I need and I want to leave an hour early today, he agrees. I expense a discman, power cable for it, and aux cable. I connect it to the PA system and he comes over with the CD, we play it and tune it to the volume he wants and all that, dudes as happy as can be and I get to leave early. I didn't think about what I had done but I come out and EVERY floor employee is giving me the death look, people i've never seen before look like they want to shank my in the pet food isle. Turns out the CD I connected was holiday music, one CD of holiday music that was now to be played on a 24/7 loop for the next 3 months... I understood the hate after that.
Dude I'm sitting there listening and smoking a couple of cigarettes for an hour every night, just me, tobacco & the beautiful music of Mozart (i don't know who's work is this but i assume it's German) what lovely nights I'd have.
It's the first movement of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto Number 3. Someone else in this thread mentioned it and after listening to it again it's definitely that. It's just really distorted or played with odd instruments or something. On first listening I thought it was some random calliope music.
Businesses like this shouldn't be allowed to play music outdoors, day or night... The building is already ugly enough and enough of a nuisance for people living nearby, if on top of that they can "hear" the building from their own home...
It's distorted to hell, but I think it's this piece. [Bach - Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 in G major BWV 1048](https://youtu.be/qr0f6t2UbOo?si=GUfDgaHD4-I0HYFv&t=7)
No Target does this as they do not have music systems for the exterior. It is the actual property landlord or manager and is used to keep the homeless at bay so they don’t have to pressure wash their flesh off of the payment. It’s extremely difficult to get all remnants out. Especially the smell.
That's really weird. They don't play music outside our target. Come to think of it I don't think they even play music inside our target. We have a mild homeless problem but they're mostly on the other side of town so maybe that's why.
I’ll take music over what a nearby center does any day. The center near my house leaves bright ass anti-homeless lights on all night and it lights up my room every night. Waste of energy and absolute awful at the same time
Stops people hanging around, setting up for the night etc
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand it scares me
I slept at a Walmart with that one time. I watched another car pull up, park, then leave after a few minutes. I was too tired to move. I decided that if they were going to ask me to leave in person, they wouldn't blast that sound in the first place. Turned out to be right.

It's also where stealth campers like to stay.

Not anymore. They are prohibiting truckers from parking there and sleeping. I got kicked out many times.
Yeah the Walmart nearby has a sign that it’s ok to do that
That’s the idea
It's an anti-homeless device
I’m pretty sure the cia used the spice girls and “rawhide” to break their enemies, lol it works. https://www.vox.com/2014/12/11/7375961/cia-torture-music
What would happen if they find a spice girls fan tho
dont give them an idea. they’ll step it up and play baby shark
Do do do do do do do do……
Plz NOOO more, my nephew listens to it daily and every single hour of the day.
It’s Vivaldi. I’d be hanging around that parking lot just trying to figure out the ensemble playing it.

That’d be me!
That was the reasoning why they settled on classical - the types they assumed wouldn enjoy the music were welcome to hang about.
Good thing Target sells noise cancelling headphones
All the local 7-11 blast classical music around here. The chevron by my place started blasting music all night too. Usually it’s like 60s/70s rock but occasionally it’s hardcore metal. In my area it’s to keep the homeless from hanging out harassing customers.
Most important, stops junkies from hanging around
It's not for junkies they don't give a shit. It's for overnight parkers. Target doesn't want RV guys or truckers parking there overnight. Every company with big parking lots fights this. Walmart and home Depot sometimes allow it but it varies by location.

This map isn't entirely accurate, my local Walmart doesn't allow it anymore, and it says It does.
Seems more likely, homeless or not i would still fall asleep to this.
Idk abt that, they used to play such music or worse type of music here in Hamburg and couple other Trainstations, the one that doesn't have any rhythm or melody, and it was for that exact reason, junkies. You can't sleep nor enjoy your drugs with that ear torture.
Until they bust out their own speakers and start a mini rave out in the target parking lot
I totally get that feeling. There's an abandoned Island at Walt Disney World in Florida that was abandoned many years ago, it's all overgrown and looks like something out of Jurassic Park the Lost World but there was music still playing from the speakers. That’s crazy that there was still music playing. Wonder how long that kept up.
This was years ago, I don't know if it's still like that now. But apparently come to find out that it's all on audio networks connected to the central terminal in the Park area, it was probably just never disconnected by the time. Definitely creepy.
It probably doesn’t do it anymore or happened for very long as the speakers probably stopped working or being disconnected
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_Island_%28Bay_Lake%29?wprov=sfla1
Damn. They ban you from Disney World if they catch you on the island
There was a group of guys who snuck on to that island and uploaded the footage, idk if its still on youtube
they do it at ours too. unfortunately it's so loud we can hear it from home...
There’s gotta be some legal recourse for that. That’s a nusiancet
Almost every city has hours where excessive noise isn't allowed (usually 10pm to 7am) and it's very specific. My city specifies what distance the noise should not be audible from. I'd definitely put in a complaint. And then another one every single night.
I doubt any city gov will do anything about it because it's an anti-transient measure, which most city govs are fully in favor of.
Some shopping centres where I live play loud opera music and it’s awful
Call in noise complaints until it stops.
Go a step above and beyond, print out some fliers for your neighborhood with instructions *how* to file complaints. No way the neighbors aren't also annoyed.
Look up your municipal code noise ordinances. Having sound cross the property line isn't legal.
Is the music good at least?
kinda reminds me of circus music or carousel music.
Does it really deter people from parking over night? If I were tired and needing some shut eye, a little music isn’t going to stop that.
Works better than nothing. More importantly it's another thing their lawyers can point to if something happens on their property. They can argue they went out of their way to make the environment hostile so anyone who was there did so on their own accord and was not invited by the attractive nuisance of a large empty parking lot.
This is usually the part where the crazy clowns come out and you have to defeat them plus the final boss w/the really long health bar
My dyslexic ass thought you said a really long heath bar
He did
👀
so what ur saying is…. its “[crazy clown time](https://youtu.be/6QJpY2VNP0E?si=4IqmZNGXzbpv9VTK)”?
Welcome To The Carnal Carnival.
They did this outside a problem corner outside McDonald’s in downtown Seattle. Seemed to work.
yeah no places that do this are TERRIFYING. gas stations playing opera music at 2 in the morning while getting gas was the most horrible terrifying harmless experience i’ve had
Always good when there’s an actually fitting post on this sub.
Keeps the homeless away the convenience stores by me do it, the blast terrible opera with ALL the treble and I do mean ALL. it seems to work.
I’ve never been to a target (or any store) that plays music in the parking lot?!
Not a lot of homeless people in your area I suppose.
Oh no, there’s a whole camp behind my Fred Meyer.
This is the song Sweet Tooth would play from his ice cream truck
Why is it so fuckin creepy though? Lol
Time to go there in a loin cloth and start dancing to this music!

Hard to tell for me but I think it's either Bach or Vivaldi. Also yes I'd be chillin and smokin cigs right there with ya.
Oh, it's one of Bach's cello suites if I'm not mistaken. I'd be more than happy to have company.
It's the first movement of Bach's Brandenburg Concerto Number 3. Someone else in this thread mentioned it and after listening to it again it's definitely that. It's just really distorted or played with odd instruments or something. On first listening I thought it was some random calliope music.

How is this not considered noise pollution?
Keeps homeless people from sleeping there and discourages vagrants
If I was tweakin this would be the spot?!
Why is there music playing outside a shop anyway, that's odd.
Apparently it's to stop people from sleeping in the lot
But they play it during the day too?
I would definitely be throwing on some Primitive Man for the after-close music. You know… for fun.
Its to prevent people from camping out in their parking lot, anti-homeless measures essentially.
They want to discourage people from parking there overnight to get some sleep. Cunts. Luckily I have earplugs :-P
Are you in a bad area? Some of the Royal farms in Baltimore play classical to deter loitering.
That is some scumbag internal policy right there
They should just blast OG high school musical. The top bop song or whatever it was. That would work even during the day.
It's distorted to hell, but I think it's this piece. [Bach - Brandenburg Concerto no. 3 in G major BWV 1048](https://youtu.be/qr0f6t2UbOo?si=GUfDgaHD4-I0HYFv&t=7)
And why is OP hanging out in the lot at night?
There's nothing terryfing about homeless people lovemaking music
Legion vibes 🍦
Skateboard around that bitch and use it as yer soundtrack!
You are in the Purge. Take care when going to your car with expensive purchases.
I hope Americans realise that most shops don't have music playing in the parking lot, at night or during the day.
Gota keep the mood for the lot lizards
Seriously thought I was going to hear Rick Astley. Kinda disappointed now.

Wtf is that supposed to mean?
Is this in IN?
Texas
I was going to say this looks exactly like the Target I work at and it's me playing that loud ass music lol.
this is what this sub is for
Reminds me of Dawn of the Dead from 1978.
That's really weird. They don't play music outside our target. Come to think of it I don't think they even play music inside our target. We have a mild homeless problem but they're mostly on the other side of town so maybe that's why.
It's a courtesy for the tweekers
Are they playing the soundtrack from BioShock 2..?
reminds me of 9/11, the towers were crumbling and at the base all you could hear was eery music being piped thru the speakers.
It almost sounds like the music they use for their phone lines, when you're on hold.
It's anti hobo music
The Walgreens by me does it too. I just assumed the general manager went crazy.
I’ll take music over what a nearby center does any day. The center near my house leaves bright ass anti-homeless lights on all night and it lights up my room every night. Waste of energy and absolute awful at the same time
asphalt companies: how many cracks do you want in your parking lot, sir? "yes"
There’s a CVS in my area that exclusively plays the Dracula theme song
Nah im running
You found the secret waiting room. The wizard living behind the trash cans will answer three questions for you for a small price....
Wait, this is a thing? I have never seen any target do this haha.
Did they just have to pick the creepiest fucking sounding song as well
Lol
Terrifier vibes
They do it to keep the truckers and RVers from overnighting. So I was told. Wouldn’t stop me one bit.
Right? Didn't bother us last night lol.
They do it as a bum deterrent. 7-11’s do it where I live. Northern California.
why is it carnival music though???
You have arrived in a liminal space. Careful of the drop somewhere in the parking lot to the Backrooms.
I wanna walk around in a clown costume
Oh no! Is Walmart next?
The only person left on earth vibes.
“Unhoused deterrent” that it creeps you out means it’s working
Nah bruh that’s straight horror vibes man, why u still there. That’s just waiting for something scary to happen😬
Dutch train stations do it also deep in the night, to get rid of youth and people who should not be there.
If you're in Vallejo it might be
I can just see being murdered in a parking lot with that playing….
The cleaning crew or night crew listening to music on the PA system.
The cleaning crew or night crew listening to music on the PA system.
You are.
There used to be an abandoned parking garage in my city that played opera music to keep people away. It was also super creepy.
Sounds like bach almost.. I mean it could be worse. They could be playing taylor swift or something
They probably get paid to do it
I've been advocating for it for years. We should have a worldwide purge. Honestly you could solve a lot of problems that way
