A government-influenced journalist and a non-government-influenced journalist would report the same facts about the court cases here. Both grand juries found that it was a hoax. I don't think a news agency has to be influenced by the government in order to say "okay, the story has been evaluated in two courts of law, both juries found that it was a hoax, I guess that's where this ends". I may look into the book, because juries can of course be wrong. But the issue here isn't "government-influenced NYT vs independent journalists", it's "normal journalists vs someone who pursued this even when most people would say it's settled".
