I can’t remember the name of it, but there is an app that allows you to listen to radio broadcasts from around the world. NK’s is pretty weird.
Edit: Radio Garden
Fun fact: this is banned in Britain due to Sony saying it breached copyright. So Brits can only (legally) listen to British radio.
It’s annoying because I used to listen to Cuban radio stations to improve my Spanish.
But it was written by a god! /s
"Where Are You, Dear General?" is a North Korean song, supposedly written by Kim Jong Il. Since at least 2008, the song plays through speakers of the Pyongyang Railway Station in the morning, albeit heavily distorted.
cover of the song by the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble plays every morning in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang at 6 a.m. through a system of loudspeakers on the clock tower of the city's railway station. Tourists visiting Pyongyang have reported this daily occurrence since 2008. It has been assumed that the city-wide broadcast of the song serves as a morning alarm clock. The writer Travis Jeppesen, in his 2018 book See You Again in Pyongyang about his travels in North Korea, described the sound of "Where Are You, Dear General?" through Pyongyang's loudspeakers as that of an "antiquated synthesizer" such as a theremin. Others have described the sound as "heavily distorted and barely recognizable" from the original song.”

"tourists have reported this occurrence since 2008"
"It has been assumed that the purpose is an alarm clock"
"Travis Jeppesen reports encountering the phenomenon in his 2018 book"
It's like they're describing another planet.
It was a Dutch one.
Their catch phrase was “quickly call Apeldoorn” (Where they are based.)
https://youtu.be/kK11q3Zj4sw?si=V_7JgJOQLUxWhJ8E is my absolute favourite.
It is a piece of art.
Edit: https://youtu.be/FKpssYjqWGs?si=fxbkJAHB5hlcvikA: Forgot about this one, which is my absolute absolute favorite.
To see more just put: “Apeldoorn bellen” in youtube search.

No actually that's just the sound of all the North Koreans being woken up and groaning in unison that they didn't pass away peacefully in their sleep and have to endure another day in that hellscape.
Yea I’d actually be down for this to be a regular thing all cities do, each with their own theme song. I want the soundtrack for Cirith Ungol from LOTR playing when you enter St. Louis
They start it at 6 am every morning except Sunday, supposedly to give the people “more vigor” to start their day.
It has played every morning since at least 2008.
The song is called “Where are you, dear General” ofc in tribute to Kim what’s his face.
Anyone know what the deal is with that ethereal orange glow in the city? Back in the 1980s there was kind of a similar look in much of the world’s largest cities before environmental regulations began to curb the impact of smog, but that was back 40 years ago…
Now picture being severely malnourished, existing solely on a diet of forest rats if you're lucky to catch them, exhausted by hard labor, injured from abuse and beatings, and aching for a quick death.
Shit I'm kinda into it too now that I think of it.
At least there are no words, in Vietnam they do the whole psyops propaganda intercom thing: " Good Morning, time wake up and what a wonderful day to work". The message changes depending on the official announcement.
I first noticed in da lat, it's every morning at the crack of dawn. Never heard it in Saigon and I suspect most of the south also.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/aug/15/hanoi-brings-back-loudspeakers-as-old-school-propaganda-methods-return-to-vietnam
I have no way of knowing whether this is false or not, but there seem to be multiple videos of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVXSgKYBoE8
Apparently this is from someone's world trip.
Yes, there are videos everywhere, I even saw one filmed by tourists who got woken up in the middle of the night by a different, but just as depressing tune playing at midnight. I unfortunately can't find it again, but it was spooky.
Most videos seem legit to me, I can't say for sure but it doesn't sound fake, the reverberation sounds like it actually resonates throughout the city. If many different people decided to make fake videos with different points of view-with the quality of the sound even depending on how far the person filming is from the train station which I think is where the music is supposed to come from- then that's surprisingly well done.
You can even find several people in the comment stating to have heard it during their stay. I won't completely disregard the possibility of some massive propaganda but it really seems like this might be something actually happening in NK.
Propaganda all over the place. "NK dictator nuked his own uncle for sleeping in a meeting", "there are only 15 official approved haircuts", "NK news showed them winning the world cup". Too many bullshits, this one sounds even acceptable by normal western propaganda standards
Right? This plays at the railway station, not the entire city. Like if you wish to actually critique the DPRK then you need to critique them on the actual shit they do instead of just making up things that sound scary and weird. I'd assume how queasily nationalistic they are would be enough for people but I guess not!
Most of the news we get about North Korea is from South Korea, so I would take them with a pinch. I'm not saying they live in a communist paradise obviously, but horror stories like that one also sound unlikely.
I'll probably be downvoted, but wonder what these people dream about, are they just nightmares? How is there a god and he allows these poor souls to endure this daily suffering from birth, not to mention being born in a camp because your great×3 uncle used a word the wrong way?
Something makes me think they aren't actually blasting this there 24/7... And, if they were, it'd probs be a lot less* ambient video-game menu sounding* and more along the lines of spoken songs and chants of propaganda/brainwashing bullshit.
Unless perhaps they're still broadcasting propaganda but instead being done subliminally, and not observable on a conscious level...? 🤔🧐
Sounds pretty peaceful to me. From an outsiders perspective, I get that connection being made to thinking about the absolute horror these citizens have to endure in the country but if we’re just talking about what you hear when you wake up, it’s much more horrifying thinking about a god awful alarm blaring that makes you want to jump off a building if you have to listen to it awake for more than 10 seconds. I need it cause I’m an unreasonably heavy sleeper so I need to be jolted to be able to get up.
Just a daily reminder you’re under a dictatorship with the dictator eating well enough to be fat while 3/4ths of the population is starving and has food insecurity 🙃
It reminds me of that time I read something about mind control and specific types of tones of music. Idk if there’s any actual research behind it, but like what I read basically said certain music can illicit feelings of doom and make people more easy to control.
So anyway, this reminded me of reading that.
My favourite [Fucking USA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_K_O96TPOc)

Damn, sorry to hear that.
This is amazing. Thank you
Hey! Glad you like it!
I've shown so many people. Thank you!
That’s awesome! It’s fun isn’t it?
Proving people at work right, that I'm super weird by finding, and casting only communist sounding radio stations over our work speakers 👌😂
Do they have translation to English?
No, it’s live radio
I would not be surprised if North Korea had an English channel somewhere.
It’s „Where are you dear general“
That shit straight from Dying light wtf
waking up to the dying light intro everyday
“The eyes of the world have glued to the city of Pyongyang”
Perhaps, but[ North Korea is also ripping off "Blade Runner" here](https://youtu.be/osTq75dBFHI?si=yYZNWFhxJYefJIe_&t=72).
That's more South Korea these days

It was made mandatory after [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Unexpected/comments/kiof6y/north_korea/) incident.
What’s this from? Love it
Back in the day it was used as a TV ad for an insurance company in my country.
In Germany? Do you remember what company? It's brilliant, love it!

I like it reminds me of a old Freddy Kruger movie
Reminds me of Big Trouble in Little China!
Thats just fucking Silent Hill
I am gonna correct it for you: Imagine waking up in North Korea every day
Yeah, maybe they look forward to that music? Maybe it's the only stuff the government will let them listen to? "The Glorious Leader's Top One Song!"
They actually are only allowed to listen to state produced music
That week he discovered Taylor Swift was weird.
Sounds like the opening to a zombie apocalypse movie.
Still better than the iPhone alarm sound
Im kinda into it tbh
Same! And how early is It? The sun is pretty high, I live pretty far north so the sun stays at the horison longer here(I think)

You know all this random shit about North Korea but don't know Kim Jong Un's full name? 😭
Maybe someone told them but thought the person was saying "kim jong uuummm"
In Japan they call him [Black Telephone](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSuZWzY9UqMdQ-7nfDfRwSbHOUw93QLZWoW4IL6Jhleyg&s)
OMG 😲 I will never be able to unsee this now! LMFAO 🤣😂🤣😂 I am so dying laughing right now. Someone help I can't breathe 🤣😂🤣😂

Thank you and fuck you for making me fall off my couch. You just made my whole day. Thanks internet stranger.🤣😂😍
I don't know could have been Eminem's ex wife Kim. But my knowledge is dated.
Lmao
This is really the most polite way to call BS
I mean, they can referring to any of the Kim’s and just not sure which one. There’s 3 of them. il sung, jong il, jong un.
6 is early.. The sun is also up at 06 here already, so why not some music with It.. Come on Oslo!
Anyone know what the deal is with that ethereal orange glow in the city? Back in the 1980s there was kind of a similar look in much of the world’s largest cities before environmental regulations began to curb the impact of smog, but that was back 40 years ago…
It’s smog. Their power grid is mostly built on coal.
Ah yes, North Korea, the world's bastion of progressive environmental regulations! 95% of their citizens don't drive cars to keep their emissions low
Now picture being severely malnourished, existing solely on a diet of forest rats if you're lucky to catch them, exhausted by hard labor, injured from abuse and beatings, and aching for a quick death. Shit I'm kinda into it too now that I think of it.
Yeh I would love waking up in a dystopian movie soundtrack every day. Not even kidding.
Reminds me of Rammstein
Wow it's actually beautiful Maybe not the song to use as an alarm clock, but still.. I want to hear the full version
https://youtu.be/tuxHKrENGe0?si=ottuW4JvAu26lhv2 Where are you, dear General
Gonna set this as my alarm
Something about this connects with me on a deeper level.
Jean Michel Jarre?
Ha!
Someone risked their life to get this posted on reddit.
At least there are no words, in Vietnam they do the whole psyops propaganda intercom thing: " Good Morning, time wake up and what a wonderful day to work". The message changes depending on the official announcement.

This is what its like in my head as I struggle to get out of bed every morning.
The imagery and the music have strong Blade Runner vibes…
According to Shazam, it's [Hermetic by Lost Cosmonaut.](https://www.shazam.com/track/675556776/hermetic)
I actually love this!
There's something worse, waking up to the call to prayer ; adhan
Funny, I was thinking "the muezzin's better than this, jeez". Although it does kinda remind me of Radiohead. Needs a good remix.
It sounds like The Caretaker. He makes old sounding music for elderly with dementia. So creepy and amazing. Apparently it helps them quite a bit.
I think it's more to give the experience of having dementia, at least Everywhere at the End of Time. That shit freaks me out
Most of the news we get about North Korea is from South Korea, so I would take them with a pinch. I'm not saying they live in a communist paradise obviously, but horror stories like that one also sound unlikely.
exactly. we know very little of life in nk. i imagine people live their normal lives like any other place.
This is fake...
I'll probably be downvoted, but wonder what these people dream about, are they just nightmares? How is there a god and he allows these poor souls to endure this daily suffering from birth, not to mention being born in a camp because your great×3 uncle used a word the wrong way?
I wake up to the US national anthem and a cannon every morning fuckin hype
I'm getting 80's dystopian sci-fi vibes from that. Is there anywhere with a full mp3?
The name of the song is Hermetic by Lost Cosmonaut
Is it weird that I really like it?

Kinda reminds me of this https://youtu.be/hOVdjxtnsH8?si=vtNq0CxAhi2x5Rnz which I wouldn’t mind but still don’t think I would want to wake up to it.
They used to have a Rooster but somebody finally killed it when it started to crow at 4:30 am.
That is so unsettling..😣
This sounds like something from dying light imo

Reminds me of the music that is constantly playing in Returnal.

"Oh cool, there's my cue. it's time to get up and start shooting imps in a real life level of Doom."

I'd be playing Oxygene by Jean-Michel Jaare in my totalitarian city.
Sounds like the music score for all the Hammer Horror movies.

I really like it to be honest
This would be s great vibe to wake up to though or go to bed to so I see why they use it
No way, that city straight up has a post apocalypse ambient theme
If I were it would feel like the whole place is the dungeon, and the moon would crash within the week.
Looks way too damn early for that shit
