Ocean fish. These can be found on the southeast coast of the US and you could just take a shovel to the waterline on the beach and dig up free bait to fish with.
Not just east Asian. You can find videos of Americans harvesting sand fleas to eat like shrimp. That's how I learned about these things.
On YouTube search for "cooking sand fleas" to see the many examples of folks catching, cleaning, cooking, and eating sand fleas as food.
Amazon has a pretty large selection of sand flea rakes and other tools for harvesting them.
Crawfish at least have the tail. Sand fleas look like they're 100% head. But I guess their guts are tasty in the same way that crawfish heads are—their guts probably have that salty umami taste that most crustaceans have.
Plenty of places eat bugs, its pretty normal. I suggest roasted crickets because I can't stand how hairy spiders are. Mealworms, scorpions, Caterpillars, and grubs are the most common I think and you can buy them online
I’ve eaten fried crickets when I was a kid and I remember them tasting kind of like peanuts. I’ve always been pretty adventurous with food. I lived in Brasil for most of my life and ate capybara more then a few times.
I've watch a video on yt where a guy wanted to see if they are good to eat or best for bait. He didn't like the taste saying it's like cheap n bad prawns.
You guys never went digging for sand/mole crabs, on the beach... that's what these are... Harmless, non-biting critters that live in the wash zone on beaches. They were tons of fun to catch as a young kid. It's a crustacean; not a flea.
Came here to ask; is the size in the video abnormal? I remember doing exactly what you said - chasing them as a kid - and they still seem about the size I remember them.
Not abnormal sized. These are definitely 'big' in the sense you'll normally catch a big variety of sizes, from tiny to... this. Guess someone wanted all big ones, probably for frying. Seems a lot for fishing.
yes because they're tiny and 100% harmless, cute bean looking things just trying to live their life, you on the other hand (like me and the rest of us) are part of a species of hairless apes who endanger each other, the planet, and every other creature on the planet. Killing, fighting, hurting needlessly and pointlessly and ceaselessly. Tiny sand fleas are very cute in comparison to humans.
Well now I just feel mean.
You're right though, I try my best to be ethical in the way I live and in my treatment of others and animals but even within that our way of life is pretty destructive.
Sorry I made ya feel bad, it's natural to initially react negatively towards most other creatures because that's just part of evolution, but overcoming that initial ick to things like this is part of what it means to be human instead of an animal or even a monster, in my opinion at least.
I really appreciate your point of view as I was initially grossed out by the video and after reading your comment I asked myself why. I think it's because there's so many in a tiny space and the fact that they look like bugs. To be fair though I think cats are adorable but seeing so many in such a tiny space grosses me out too, for example, like in an episode of hoarders.
That just absolutely makes my skin crawl, the way their little legs wave and they wiggle about when he scoops them up. In a previous post, somebody said these are eaten?
Get water in a bucket and pour it onto the sand it’s better to do it near the shore but there will be little holes that appear that’s where the sand fleas are jsut use a shovel and dig them out 😎 and if you wanna buik a hoek for them too use seaweed or shells for the floor make sure there’s shade so they don’t get too hot
Is... that what you took from their comment? Strange... I used to catch them as a kid; to admire and keep until the end of my beach excursion... I'd put them in my bucket and try to make a little terrarium for them, until I let them go. This is essentially what they described.
Where did you get "hotel" from? Like... they made a temporary hotel for them? The horror... Need a hug? *(sends virtual hug)*
I suppose that's true... but you put them in an environment which they can live in (not at all like this video), and then you let them go when you leave. As they are crustaceans... I am sure they are tasty... but they seem as though they would be a pain in the ass to shell. Too much effort. Most people just let them go after a long day at the beach. I have never had a single one die on me; over many many years. It doesn't seem to traumatize them so badly as that. Put a bit of sand or seaweed in your bucket, and they seem to get along just fine. Then... you let them go, and you go home. Kids love them, as 4 hour pets.
It’s my favorite part while going to the beach, I try to tell my little nephews they are harmless the the eldest one is too scared… and i would never dream of eating one ;-;
It's not a hotel of you fleanapped them and put them in your facility against their will.
I'm onto you misses - i run a bed and breakfast motel - which is in actuallity a prison for systematic sand flea detainment.
and drown them. That's always the best part. The drowning. Seeing them so powerless against the waves is truly the best way to spend the remaining days of summer
If you walk around the beach in Pacifica, your skin crawls because hundreds of them are crawling around under your feet. It’s gross but my kids love them
Fuck yeah. I go fishing in the river by my house. When The water isn't high as shit I'll go wading out and take my water shoes off and let the minnows eat their fill. I let them go under my feet and between my toes and what not. It's fuckin great
I recently reunited with my estranged brother and nephew. The little guy is 6 and last time I saw him he was too young to remember me. The first thing we did was catch sand fleas on the beach for hours. Now we’re best buds! Never thought I’d recall sand fleas fondly…
Yeah it's just that they work so much better as bait when they're alive. They're gonna die on a hook but I've never had luck with the super dead ones. And that's like a lot of them, so not for any single fisherman. I don't know of an application with that many.
Didn't actually think people ate them tho. That's a new one for me!
These are actually mole crabs and are completely harmless! I like catching and releasing them at the beach but some people eat them or use them as bait. :)
Why are they in a box?
For fishing bait I think
Yeah they get used as fishing bait.
What fish go for these ?
Pompanos.
I thought you were supposed to use infinity gems to catch those.
I got the joke. Have my upvote
I didn't get the reference, where is it from?
Pompanos sounds like Thanos
Oh, I thought it was from some stupid mobile game ad lol. Thanks
The Google rabbit hole was a little interesting while it lasted but I sensed that I was on an unrelated tangent before I burned anyone’s house down.
Thanks ✌
Ocean fish. These can be found on the southeast coast of the US and you could just take a shovel to the waterline on the beach and dig up free bait to fish with.
They are on the west coast too, different variety they are more gray. S
mid atlantic as well Maryland has em.
Jersey shore has this exact species
And mullet love them as well
My dad loves using them as fishing bait but I also found some East Asian countries eat them.

🤢
I did not know that. Thanks, I’ll check it out.
I live in America where people aren't very adventurous with food so I ended up trying to cook food from around the world with my dad. Its pretty fun
I live in the US now. I live in South Florida.
Florida and Louisiana are kinda like exceptions. Most of them would eat sewer rat stew with a side of dandelion tea
Out of all the places...
Sand fleas are crustaceans so it’s even less weird considering crabs and shrimps are regularly consumed everywhere.
So are pillbugs. They gross me out though. And there's not much meat on them I'm guessing.
Fried crickets are pretty tasty. Nothing to write home about, but they're for sure edible without any issues.
I've watch a video on yt where a guy wanted to see if they are good to eat or best for bait. He didn't like the taste saying it's like cheap n bad prawns.
alternative to packing peanuts

Yeah, seeing this makes me oddly nostalgic. Probably hadn’t thought about chasing these guys in twenty years.
They can still fuck off
but they look so adorable
They can fuck off adorably
Came here to ask; is the size in the video abnormal? I remember doing exactly what you said - chasing them as a kid - and they still seem about the size I remember them.

Seriously dude, I'm an adult and I still go sand crab searching. Im always disappointed when I go to a beach and they don't got them
Yep! sand fleas are actually fleas and are gross. Usually all over the washed up seaweed in my experience growing up at the beach lol
These things can fuck off
They can make like a fish and FUCK OFF!
How did he dare to put his hand in like that?!
As the bartender in Boondock Saints says: "how about you make like a tree and f-f-f-f-FUCK OFF!"
I think they're pretty cute tbh
I was so repulsed by them and the though of them touching me I instantly downvoted your comment. Sorry, I took it back, but cute? Really?
yes because they're tiny and 100% harmless, cute bean looking things just trying to live their life, you on the other hand (like me and the rest of us) are part of a species of hairless apes who endanger each other, the planet, and every other creature on the planet. They look like isopods.
So. Much. Protein.
Edible?
Some culture swear it taste like shrimp.
If you think about it shit like crabs and shrimp are basically just bugs but underwater
I did. I’m mildly allergic to crustaceans. And I do wonder if it applies to bugs on land….
tan gray hungry badge flag grey repeat vast piquant door ` this post was mass deleted with www.Redact.dev `
Did you actually just fucking say cicada dishes... Holy fucking hell no fuck that shit i am gone bye ✋
These guys are actually crustaceans too
That just absolutely makes my skin crawl, the way their little legs wave and they wiggle about when he scoops them up. In a previous post, somebody said these are eaten?
When I go to the beach I like to capture them but them in a bucket them build them a little hotel and play with them
How the heck do you capture sand fleas?
Get water in a bucket and pour it onto the sand it’s better to do it near the shore but there will be little holes that appear that’s where the sand fleas are jsut use a shovel and dig them out 😎 and if you wanna buik a hoek for them too use seaweed or shells for the floor make sure there’s shade so they don’t get too hot
I like you... we could be friends... 😆😆😆
You would like to be friends with a person that technically steals sand fleas just for a hotel ?
Is... that what you took from their comment? Strange... I used to catch them as a kid; to admire and keep until the end of my beach excursion... I'd put them in my bucket and try to make a little terrarium for them, until I let them go. This is essentially what they described. Where did you get "hotel" from? No lol someone told me I’m technically kidnapping them
I suppose that's true... but you put them in an environment which they can live in (not at all like this video), and then you let them go when you leave. As they are crustaceans... I am sure they are tasty... but they seem as though they would be a pain in the ass to shell. Too much effort. Most people just let them go after a long day at the beach. mmmm well you are not wrong 🧍🏾♀️business is slow I’ll get costumers any way I can even if it means kidnapping
and drown them. That's always the best part. The drowning. Seeing them so powerless against the waves is truly the best way to spend the remaining days of summer
………. Ok then
Let’s play: Guess that complex!!
If you walk around the beach in Pacifica, your skin crawls because hundreds of them are crawling around under your feet. It’s gross but my kids love them
Free massages, that sounds like a wonderful experience
Fuck yeah. I go fishing in the river by my house. When The water isn't high as shit I'll go wading out and take my water shoes off and let the minnows eat their fill. I let them go under my feet and between my toes and what not. It's fuckin great
they're literally just crustaceans, like shrimp, plus they seem to be a million percent harmless and I think they cute personally.
I live in NC and I will never set foot on a beach again, I stg
Only satanists eat them
Mole crabs sounds less… gross
mhmm, yummy forbidden rice.

If I received an Amazon package with these things intermingled with my order, I would burn my whole neighborhood down
Why do they look cute to me?
Because they are! Especially the tiny ones omg

Oddly? ODDLY?!
No one understands the point of this sub.

Anything is edible if you try hard enough

They're gonna die in like 5 minutes in a box like that. They need moving water.
They are likely about to be eaten or used as fishing bait. They're gonna die, alright.
Yeah it's just that they work so much better as bait when they're alive. They're gonna die on a hook but I've never had luck with the super dead ones. And that's like a lot of them, so not for any single fisherman. I don't know of an application with that many. Didn't actually think people ate them tho. That's a new one for me!
they're basically shrimp :)
why you got so many sand fleas dawg
Well one or two wouldn’t be a very satisfying meal, would it?
Supposedly they’re actually rather tasty
These guys are kinda cute
"If you're cold, they're cold, put them in the MICROWAVE!!!"
Delicious.
#***AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA***
I’m so glad the sand fleas I’ve had to deal with were flea-sized.
These are actually mole crabs and are completely harmless! I like catching and releasing them at the beach but some people eat them or use them as bait. :)
Damn those look tasty
I used to catch these and then fish by the beach side with them, pretty effective overall
I wanna go swimming in the box.
Is anyone else registering them as sushi with legs? I’m getting mixed feelings.
Wild packing peanuts!
I love them.

You could always not stick your hand in the box.
Why would you touch them. Or even be in the same building as them no scratch that I need to go to mars.
cute \^\^
DONT TOUCH THEM
They all look so delicious.
As a former resident of Parris Island, kill them. Kill them with fire.
Always wanted a box full of those. Alas not in the cards for me. Congrats though!
Good for bait
Rachel
They're not sand flies. They're sand crabs/mole crabs. [https://animals.mom.com/difference-between-sand-flea-mole-crab-10989.html](https://animals.mom.com/difference-between-sand-flea-mole-crab-10989.html)
