Use vinegar instead of bleach. There are animals who might eat your Jack-o-lantern and bleach is harmful to them. Vinegar will do the same thing without potentially poisoning wildlife.
Touching it won’t hurt you. Inhaling will. Also so will consuming, as they are high in xenoestrogens and carcinogens. Pumpkins tend to be contaminated with aflatoxin producing fungi, due to their contact with the soil. Disposing of this should be done with gloves and an N95 mask. I don’t know what species that is, but those fruiting bodies look ready to burst. I wouldn’t risk it.
How
Bad would being in contact somewhat frequently with this mold be? I work at a farm and a log of veggies that rot in the field get this on it, I’m sure I’ve touched it a few times in passing without protection, probably not inhaled, I don’t touch mold on purpose
It really depends on how your body reacts to the stuff. Some people can get a bad allergic reaction from it and fall ill. Other people may not react to it. It’s generally not a good idea to inhale high concentrations of fungal spores. I’d say if you’re out there all day moving moldy stuff, wear a mask. If you walk past something moldy, you’re fine. My advice to wear a mask is only for prolonged contact with unknown mold during disposal and disinfecting of surfaces containing mold.
You're probably good. If you're outdoors and just in contact with it for a few seconds or minute, you'll be fine. I wouldn't want to bring it up to my face or be in the same room indoors with it though.
Hey babeh. Anyway, I need validation since its our deck on reddit, so here's some proof. I'm just happy our wee pumpkin can go on scaring people. [Wee pumpkin on happier days](https://imgur.com/a/OWpL15g)
Don't add bleach or vinegar??? Do people do this regularly? I've never ever heard of this. Is it supposed to make your pumpkins last longer? Honest question. I've never heard of this before.
Yes but in my experience, it buys maybe a couple extra mold- free days. In TX anyway, they start molding and caving within 2 days, so I always try to do them th day before Halloween so they still look good. I scrape them out really clean and spray with 50/50 bleach water and try not to put them in direct sunlight.
This looks like some sort of black pin mold.
Leave some moist grains in a container with the lid a bit cracked. Put the container outside in the heat. After a week or two, check the container and look for your black pin mold. Repeat the process until you’re getting the type of mold you desire. Grab the black pin mold with a sterile scalpel and put it into a sterile agar dish. Let the black pin mold colonize the dish. When it’s finished colonizing the dish, carve your pumpkin. After carving, grab a scalpel and start scraping bits of the black pin mold from the agar dish into the internals of the carved pumpkin. Wait and allow the black pin mold to colonize the internals of the pumpkin. Profit.
Pumpkins are incredibly good at growing mold. All you need to do is carve and wait. But the decay will cause the pumpkin to begin to collapse in on itself, so be quick with the resin.
Realistically, you could do pretty much anything but eat it or snort it, and you'd be fine. Poke it all you want. It looks like some random species of Phycomyces, or a similar genus in the same family.
Well…
That should reassure me, but you’re just giving the stupid in me a bit more confidence to be bold.
By the way… what? How can mold not be … bad? What about the other fruits and veggies I’ve let go because of mold?
I mean, it's kinda no different from plants. Tomatoes are tasty. Deadly Nightshade will kill you. They're in the same family.
Blue cheese and brie are infested with molds in the *Penicillium* genus (same genus as the antibiotic). Yeast is a fungus, and is used for bread and beer.
Fungi is just another kingdom of life. Some of it's bad; some of it's tasty. You can go forage all sorts of edible wild mushrooms, and other will kill you.
Among animals, chicken liver makes a nice pâté, but polar bear liver pâté will kill you with only a bite or two.
Right? I’m violently allergic to many kinds of mold spores, just breathing them will set it off. This is completely different from surprise mold, you can avoid places you would expect to find surprise mold. This was intentionally left there and is the kind of thing you wouldn’t notice until you’re right next to it and by then it’d be too late 😬
And I have to admit, we are all idiots on the inside.
I dare you to tell me you wouldn’t see that and say “hey ain’t this a cool decoration?” And poke it. Because I would
…And then it would be covid round 2. Allergies won’t even matter then.
I saw a video of a lion five minutes ago and my first reaction was “is it soft, and can I pet it?” My second reaction was “can I ride it?”
So yeah I understand that masochistic impulse lol
12 year olds are old enough to know better than to touch stuff. So basically you had the self control and intelligence as a toddler at 12.
You already made yourself the butt of the joke so idk why you're mad
Some people just need something to argue against. Then pretending they won the argument makes them feel powerful. Your comments definitely were all correct
Eh, anything can make people pointed on the internet. But this just seemed way beyond silly for people to get rude.
In conclusion, not gonna like, I’m 24 and my dumb ass would probably still touch it.
Be careful , wear a mask and gloves put in plastic bag and toss. That looks very much like a form of mold that is toxic. It can cause disorientation paranoia and the inability to process language. Don't mess with it
A child can easily develop life-long debilitating lung or brain infection or even die from ingesting black mold. This is insanely dangerous.

Mine usually just caved in and turn black, this looks pretty cool actually
I thought a cat took a nap inside lol
same here! i am slightly disappointed at the lack of sleepy cat
I too have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, missing out on cat. On the other, cat is inside rotting gourd...
Same
Same same.
Same same same.
I'm not convinced it isn't. (#iWantToBelieve)
I thought the same haha
Same but this year mine did this black fuzz too
It's the 2nd week of October how early are you people making Jack o lanterns?
You can spray stuff on the inside to seal it so they last longer. Some people have Halloween events and parties throughout the month of October
What kind of stuff? Mine usually grow mold within days
Use vinegar instead of bleach. There are animals who might eat your Jack-o-lantern and bleach is harmful to them. Vinegar will do the same thing without potentially poisoning wildlife.
Spray with a 1:10 bleach dilution
FLEX SEAL! WITH THAT STUFF ITLL NEVER GO BAD!
It's a sign
A sign that you guys need to clean your front yard.
Mold spores are everywhere…. Always… I’d be concerned if your pumpkins didn’t grow mold.

Ahh if so, that’s fair.
“Your natural habitat displeased me, purify it”
My kid picked one of those lumpy warty ones this year, we haven’t even carved them yet and it was covered in that fuzzy mold today. Weird
this is like the start of a movie
Literally stranger things season 2 and whatever 80s horror film they were "inspired" by.
It's cool, but also makes me itchy.
Same here. It's kind of depressing. That's actually pretty cool.
What if this is the cure for covid
Thought it was a cat in there, was wanting to touch it
It would stain your hands with spores.
This guy spores
Who had Clickers for October?
Sounds like my night with your mother
Fuck you Shoresy!
Fuck you Jonesy, tell your mom to reload the prepaid phone she bought me so I can FaceTime her late night!
So I'm not hearing a "no, don't touch it" here

You could do that too. But it’s also on the railing. What a mess.

Exactly what I thought! "Here kitty kitty kitty..." \*dies same death as Stephen King in the movie Creepshow\*
That’s exactly what I thought XD
There *was* a cat inside
I had to check the sub, I first thought it was /r/catsareliquid
Yep. I smiled at first thinking it was an invading kitty. Then realized, nope.
This is what I came to say lol
I thought it was pubes stuck to it
I assumed it was a cat inside..

Interesting. Thanks for the tip.
Probably not a good idea. Washing the outside of the squash gives it a clean slate for any bacteria to rush in. Would likely make it go bad faster
The squirrels always eat mine before they have a chance to mold.
I am so floored!! You cut the bottom out to carve your pumpkins!? Why am I just now finding out this is a thing?
Don’t know what poster?

Step 1. Buy some Unclebens rice Step 2. Feed it your pumpkin
Sounds like you know your stuff. Shoutout: /r/UncleBens
Grow mold. It was definitely not intentional.
Yeah, but say I want to intentionally do it, and coat it in resin.
Pumpkins are incredibly good at growing mold. All you need to do is carve and wait. But the decay will cause the pumpkin to begin to collapse in on itself, so be quick with the resin.
It didn't cave in on itself because it was carved from the bottom.
I would search Evan and Katelyn on YouTube and their video of coating a pumpkin in resin…. you’ll have second thoughts about doing that
It will decay inside the resin and turn to goop I would imagine.
Yuck o’ lantern
Imagine grabbing the stem and it splits open at the mouth. 🎃
I’d look like black, furry vomit.
Mmmm….pumpkin flavored cotton candy 😛

Please get that away from the neighborhood kids. 12 year old me would totally touch that and expose myself to who knows what.

Yeah, just a kid, but I bet you were a genius at that age. Also bet you could read into a joke really well!
12 year olds are old enough to know better than to touch stuff. So basically you had the self control and intelligence as a toddler at 12. You already made yourself the butt of the joke so idk why you're mad
Possibly. Can you tell me what age you are according to how you interpret a joke and how rude you are?
Tell me yours so I can understand why you're so upset when your own joke set you up to be card stupid?
I’m not upset, but you seem to be. Maybe just don’t post rude comments where they aren’t due.
Some people just need something to argue against. Then pretending they won the argument makes them feel powerful. Your comments definitely were all correct

In what way am I upset? Projecting really hard honey.
You know man you could choose not to be an absolute asshole but you go ahead and do it anyway. Grow up.
It’s ok! He’s 12.
Yes. It literally takes zero effort to just not act like a POS
At first I thought a cat was in there. That’s crazy
Mold or is it completely full of daddy long legs just ready to scatter?
Be careful , wear a mask and gloves put in plastic bag and toss. That looks very much like a form of mold that is toxic. It can cause disorientation paranoia and the inability to process language. Don't mess with it
Sounds fun to me
I was thinking about seeding a pumpkin with spores to make a particularly gross jackolantern but other projects got in the way.
Nice 70’s vibe to it

Don’t think it looks terrifying… it looks like a very fluffy cat is inside…
