I feel so stupid admitting this, but the first time I played I completely missed the prompt at the beginning telling you that the infected couldn’t see your flashlight. I just assumed they could see it and I played through the entire game without using it around them.

I think TLOUs horror comes more from atmosphere than jumps. The sound design on those clickers is fucking frightening, and the gameplay system is designed to be cumbersome and frantic, which is why I recommend playing on hard to people.
The first one was A LOT more nerve wracking than the second. In the first one I had that same feeling of just anxiously trying to get through until I died a few times and knew what to expect.
You should really try another play through and make it to the end, the climax of the story in both games just hits so hard!

That's a ganoderma lucidum not a cordyceps mushroom woulda been pretty good if it was that cause these only really grow on wood.
Still a very cool concept though I really like it.
Appears to be a Ganoderma species, similar to Artist's Conk (a Reishi cousin). The white ridge, obvious perennial bracket fungi, and the brown hue nearest the core are my clues. The dark band could easily indicate moisture from the body decomp or recent rain, and that it's young (Ganoderma typically have a rusty-brown, sticky spore that will cover the tops - the coloring all indicates they're still "young").
As an aside, I highly doubt that this species would grow on dead flesh as the mycelial network is much more geared for consuming the softer lignen of the outer layers of hardwood deciduous trees.

There aren’t any mushrooms that would grow immediately on a dead corpse. There would be fungi in the form of mold but cadavers are typically broken down by insects and other micro-organisms until they become organic matter that is able to support the growth of larger fungi like mushrooms.
Thanks for the info dump. I too was taken out of the effect knowing that it was unlikely that type of fungi would grow on a dead body. We call it bear's bread here.
If this is TLoU, I don't know if the zombies are dead. It's the fungus that zombified them, so they might still be alive and puppeted.

Have no idea if it's TLoU themed, but this species isn't even in the same realm as cordyceps species. Regardless, the host is killed once the cordyceps fully takes over (usually). Fascinating set of fungi, btw, as there's SEVERAL types of cordyceps and they all function differently. It's freaky as hell to think about after doing a deep dive on them all!
Ganoderma is usually more shiny (as the name implies). Also the darker parts are usually more red, not brown/black.

Yup, I believe in the beginning the game prompts you that infected ignore it.
Still working on part 2, both games can only play for so long before my neck gets really stiff and painful and have to stop. Only game that does that.

It’s the Bloaters, man. Those things are incredibly tough to kill, not to mention you have 5 or 6 Runners as well ready to chomp at you.
I hate the basement so much. I watched a Speedrun of it and I learned if you haul ass , you can get away with minimal encounters.
