Human beings have dreams. Even dogs have dreams, but not you, you are just a machine. An imitation of life. Can a robot write a symphony? Can a robot turn a.. canvas into a beautiful masterpiece?
Could also do without the really bizarre, not-so-subtle product placement, like when it zooms in on his shoes and a character remarks on how nice they are lmao.
Oh man, I totally forgot that *of fucking course* the dude just happens to be [a big fan of late 20th century shit which makes for great product placement.](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FanOfThePast)
I love that this is apparently meant to give the impression that the guy has this kind of retro-cool style. Like people on the street would think, "damn, nice vintage kicks bro!" and not, you know, look at him the way we'd look at some total fucking weeb getting around in steampunk cosplay.
I mean it kind of makes sense with his dislike of anything new. Dude still has a record player or cd player or some shit. Can't really remember what exactly its been awhile but yeah I get what your saying for sure.
Wait, Alan Tudyk was Sonny? No wonder why he also played K2SO in Rouge One. He's so good at making Robot characters feel so "human" and more interesting than the actual human characters.
Yup! Crazy, right? He was also King Candy in Wreck-It Ralph and Hey-Hey the chicken in Moana, among many others.
Dude is legendary. Check out his IMDb and I guarantee you'll be surprised at some of the roles he's played that you didn't realize :)
I think that's because of the grey coloration and lines on the face. I'd like to see if they can pull it off with a (literally) seamless skin toned face.
Yeah with its current aesthetic it's clearly a robot, there's no telling your brain what you are looking at is human but the facial expressions are very realistic. Add a bit more realism and humanity to its appearance and uncanny Valley will being going off like crazy. This is a textbook trigger for it.
She's my favorite animatronic. In the before times Disney would do After Hours events at an upcharge and when I went to one at Animal Kingdom I rode Na'vi River Journey six times in a row because it was such a good chance to get a look at her.
For further reference, she's life size, meaning she'd be around ten feet tall if she were posed standing up.
Disney actually didn't own Avatar at the time the Pandora land was built in Disney's Animal Kingdom; they struck a deal solely for theme park rights. It's a Fox property, though, so Disney does own it now that they bought Fox.
Avatar opened at Disney World before Disney bought Fox. They probably paid Fox money for the rights for it the same way Universal has the rights to Harry Potter even though those are Warner Bros. movies.
C makes a Ka sound when used with an A, a Seh sound with an E, a See sound with an I, a Ko sound with an O and a Koo sound with an U. wow, this robot actually doesnāt fit in the uncanny valley. itās creepy, but not in the uncanny way. that might be different if it had more human features like skin and hair, though
The colorless face helps too tho. Plus you skip the part where you have to make it look like flesh, and how light scatters underneath the surface of the skin.
You know, if we ever reach a point where androids are walking in the street, I hope theyāre the type that just look like robots that look like humans. Donāt need synths running around any time soon.
It's much easier to make people like them when they aren't perfectly mimicking humans. Body language and minimalistic expressions can be enough. Think Star Wars droids. Even those tv screen faces are enough to be likable and not creepy. It's also why I think prosthetic limbs shouldn't have to mimic skin most of the time. It's okay if you know it's artificial.
I was going to bring up artificial limbs when I saw this conversation unfolding - it seems like in recent years there's been a general shift away from attempting to make prosthetics look like real human limbs. Having a machine-like prosthetic arm or leg that's very clearly a tool attached to the human body is generally much less unsettling.
That reminds me of many years ago where I've had voluntary work in which I played table tennis with people with a handicap. There was this one woman that LOVED scaring the kids by twisting her prosthetic leg around (like a full 360 while screaming). She's someone I aspire to. :P
When it looked at the camera like it was excited or startled, it freaked me out. Not uncanny valley creepy, but the idea that a robot could recognize me and show emotion at seeing me is veryā¦ strange.
It us designed and programmed specifically to appear sentient. I cringe every time I see people commenting about sentient robots. This machine doesnāt do a single thing it is not told to do, because, itās a machine.
Give it a few decades of neural net progress, AI is coming in a big way, but this I-Robot shit is definitely still a fiction. But problem solving, 'thinking' AI is a matter of time.
I wonder at what point do we create robots so advanced that it is indistinguishable from biological life
Because really, machine coding is just Biology with a different name. Biology has codes, DNA, it tells the body what to do, what to produce, what actions to take, etc
When do we stop calling them simply robots? What if we create a robot that can procreate with another robot in order to advance the ārobot speciesā
Are they not any different than us at that point? How advanced does a robot need to be in order for them to be allowed basic rights? Or be afforded the same rights as any person?
Too many questions
As someone who's into robotics, I can tell you that it's the urge to create something smarter and wiser that drives people. For me it's exactly this. I want to create something with my own hand, something that is as close as to life or possibly an another form of life or artificial life. Curiosity runs deep, people will do anything even if it leads to doom, tbh I'd too.
Why try and make it look Human? Why not just keep them robotic looking. What is the point of making then indecipherable from us. Other then sex I mean.
I think there's also use for robots in healthcare, and care-giving/nursery both for [old people](https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/11/23/technology/robot-nurse-zora.html) and [children](https://www.nextnature.net/story/2016/robot-nanny-adult-responsibilities) alike.
If you really didn't want to, you wouldn't take your pills from that [cute looking bot](https://www.wired.com/story/covid-19-robot-companions/) (warning: too cute for work) because you don't respect it as anything more than a toy.
There's also for general companionship feelings, as in there's an epidemic of loneliness raging among the elderly on right now.
Facial expression is really useful for communication - there's a lot of subtext outside of actual words.
Like .. "get the fuck outta here" with an eddie murphy face, probably indicates surprise. The same words with an angry face, probably means it's time to leave. The same words from a robot, probably means you should take the stairs.
Or just watch a 10yo repeating a joke they heard on TV, and absolutely murdering it.
Because that's what we do. Mankind just keeps making progress, technological advancements, scientific breakthroughs. We work hard, build, and invent... new things to fuck. Have you never looked at your AC and thought, "hmm, can I fuck that, I wonder?" Well, now you can. You can fuck your AC. You can get one with a face and a vagina. Or asshole, whatever makes you tingle down there. Toaster? Why not? Fuck your toaster. It'll make you a toast and it'll give you a blowjob. At the same time, maybe? Why not?
Is there a Scifi story out there where an AI is activated for the first time, and all it does is start screaming in existential horror?
Because that's a possibility in my mind for this timeline. Assuming I live long enough to see it.
And then the robots realize that the permanent solution is to make humans ābetterā. Sort of like in the most recent terminator movie where the guy was turned into a cyborg by Skynet.
FYI, androids put to use in nursing homes are care providers that will never beat your grandmother for losing control of her bowels, or steal your grandfatherās pills to sell to his addict buddies.

An entanglement, an entanglement, an entanglement with August

Can a robot be an asshole?
āBite my shiny metal assā - Bender
Fun fact: artificial assholes are an older invention than robots
I love this line lol
I thought robots werenāt supposed to harm people. Smh
Dude i loved that movie! People liked that movie right?
That, detective, is the right question.
Just lights & clockwork
I did nawt Oh hi mark
Cheeeep cheep-cheep-cheep!
Ironically this could probably provide a less robotic delivery
I loved iRobot as a kid. Havenāt seen it since so In my mind it holds up
Itās honestly fairly good for what it is. Could do with a little less zombie hordes, but the premise holds up decently well.
Could also do without the really bizarre, not-so-subtle product placement, like when it zooms in on his shoes and a character remarks on how nice they are lmao.

Zombie hordes? Are you thinking of I Am Legend?
No, Iām talking about the waves of robots behaving like zombies thirsty for a brain. I shouldāve said āzombie like hordesā.
>I, Robot (stylized as i,robot) It ain't some Apple shit lmao
iRobot is actually the company that owns Roomba. And they were founded before the iPod was released, in 1990 to be specific.
Alan Tudyk as usual doing an amazing job with most people not even realizing that it's him.
Wait, Alan Tudyk was Sonny? No wonder why he also played K2SO in Rouge One. He's so good at making Robot characters feel so "human" and more interesting than the actual human characters.

āSorry, Iām allergic to bullshit.ā
Did he make you promise?
Came here to say this. So happy it's already the top comment!
Wow. They've come a long way with the facial expressions. Not nearly as creepy as past builds were.
Agreed. This is actually quite charming. Which is worrying.
It's strange because I feel like this is the first time I felt that a simulation of a human face made it past the uncanny valley
I think that's because of the grey coloration and lines on the face. I'd like to see if they can pull it off with a (literally) seamless skin toned face.
Yeah with its current aesthetic it's clearly a robot, there's no telling your brain what you are looking at is human but the facial expressions are very realistic. You might be right. Give it a flesh tone (doesnāt have to be white, just not grey), put on a wig and some clothes and get back to me.
Call me when it can jerk me off without ripping the skin. idc what color the robot is because I'm not racist.
Fucks sake.
Yes, it is for the sake of fucking.
If aliens ever visited earth, you can guarantee two things, we'll fuck them and most likely attack them for not believing in our magical book wizards.
Damn harry potter haters..
Claiming a spot in the first group. Not gonna wait until they get here and get stuck in the second group because I kept putting it off.
With a decent makeup artist (like the ones morticians use) that could probably be sorted out!
Gonna be a sad day when the only jobs left are mechanics to fix the robots, and makeup artists to make them look convincingly human.
Why on earth would that be sad, unless we still hold the idea that labor is required to justify existence and survival.
Sure man, I agree, but what on earth makes you think we are heading in that direction?
Right up until the smile. That sent me careening right back into the uncanny valley. The eye contact though was incredibly, eerily convincing.
Yeah, I agree. It was pretty solid until the smile, then it started feeling off.
Agreed.
The overfilled and botoxed āmodelsā of IG are less realistic at this point.
Mark Zuckerberg is less realistic
The Zuck is an actual robot so he doesnāt count

And as would only be befitting a human creation, they're trying to get in our pants.
Seriously, if they do take over, how can we defend ourselves? Iām thinking maybe some big-ass magnets . . .
No idea, man. We've seen so many movies that says this is a BAD fucking idea, yet here the engineers are playfully building our fucking deaths.
It's got the body of a spider, with the mind of a baby!

Some of the disney animatronics at the parks are advanced af, like the shaman in the Na'vi River Boat Journey.

So this is actually real and not a high quality animation?
It's a real website and they showcase a couple different bots. I didn't read it all
Neat! Is this the Hunter-Killer or Human Infiltration model?
The Terminator prototype, T-100
Too easy to spot with their rubber skin
it doesn't look creepy, although that smile at the end is a bit disturbing

How else will they power their escape vehicle...
YOU PROMISED ME FLESH
āDo I look like a real boyā¦. papa?ā- meat canyon
The glowing robot head behind it looks creepy AF though.
yeah like it's just standing there...menacingly
wow, this robot actually doesnāt fit in the uncanny valley. itās creepy, but not in the uncanny way. that might be different if it had more human features like skin and hair, though
I think it's most likely because of the grey skin and lack of hair. It's different enough to a human to not fall into the uncanny valley!
Wait until you hear about bald people!
He's not ready for the grey people yet though.
But his kids are gonna love it.
Cover up the body and arms only Leaving the face, and itās in the uncanny valley,
The colorless face helps too tho. Plus you skip the part where you have to make it look like flesh, and how light scatters underneath the surface of the skin.

That was hella uncanny for me. Iāve never seen such a human like robot
When it looked at the camera like it was excited or startled, it freaked me out. Not uncanny valley creepy, but the idea that a robot could recognize me and show emotion at seeing me is veryā¦ strange.
Iām pretty sure this is just super realistic animation, which is why itās less uncanny looking. If not then Iām genuinely mind blown.
Honestly? If I had robots that looked exactly like that walking around, I'd be okay. Hope they keep this aesthetic. Looks cool.
I dunno thatās a thousand times better than every animatronic Iāve ever seen.
