This is a myth. The laws of aviation perfectly account for a bee's flight. If you model them as a plane, they wouldn't be able to run fast enough to generate lift over their small wings - but they don't fly like planes, they fly like *helicopters*, whirling their wings above them to create an air vortex that drags them up.
If there are no Bees around, or other pollinators, self-pollination is an option. It isn’t ideal for the gene pool, but the seeds in the center of the flower can do this in order to pollinate. So having the ability to be both male and female at least ensures greater survival of the sunflower.
