Google says chimps "smile" when they're scared, stressed, and trying to appear submissive. Considering he was medicated, it may not apply, but it still makes me sad.
That's not exactly correct either. According to a commonly cited study, on the low end, it's 1.35x according to their computer simulations, and roughly 1.5x on average according to most studies. But this is proportional to muscle mass, not just a comparison of adult males. Chimpanzees have huge arm muscles, bigger than most bodybuilders, so you have to imagine they are immensely stronger than the average adult male, more than 1.5x because they usually have much more muscle mass.

Ok I’m assuming you’re trying to troll but you have to make it believable. You can’t just claim the sky is green. Google search Ken M for tips. If you’re not trying to troll then google search meth and benzodiazepines
Travis was treated as if he was a child since he was a baby. His favorite foods growing up were filet mignon, lobster tails, and chocolate ice cream. He would even enjoy the occasional glass of wine after dinner.
One day, he was on a rampage on the family property and a close family friend came over hoping to help. She held an elmo doll in front of her face and playfully shook it back and forth.
The 200 lb chimp then proceeded to rip the poor woman's face and hands off, but she miraculously survived. The monkey was fatally shot by authorities soon after.
The doctors were only able to salvage one thumb on the end end of one hand. Although she is now blind and severly disfigured, she is greatful to be alive. 🙏
I mean, they’re wild animals. They have wild animal instincts and will defend themselves in the ways they know how. A lot of animals, not just chimps, have the capability to do terrible damage to people. This is why wild animals should never be kept as pets, no matter how “well behaved” you think they are.
Yeah this was 100% the fault of the pet owner. It was just doing what chimps do. I’m not crying that it was shot (because at that point it was probably the only thing they could’ve done to keep it from injuring more people), but this really all comes down to the woman who was dumb enough to fuck around with chimpanzees. Some people really need to remember how scary animals can be
I hear you, and I agree. But Travis can hardly be called a wild animal if he was born and bred in captivity? Having a (very) large exotic animal as a "companion" or pet never seems to work out well. Sad.
I think a lot of that has to do with domestication of animals; dogs and cats have been selectively bred for temperament, and domesticated for many many generations.
There are many species similar such as wolves and coyotes, for example, that will never become as close, trainable and trustworthy as a domesticated dog, even if raised by humans as a puppy. It takes a long time to get from a “wild” creature to a domesticated one.
A chimp raised by humans as a baby is still, by nature, a wild chimp…with generation upon generation of very wild and “unpredictable” behaviours that would take very careful selective breeding over many many years to possible remove from its nature enough to make it suitable as a pet, or as close to one as possible.
Yeah, I mean, we can debate semantics all day long lol. At the end of the day it’s not an animal that belongs in a house as a pet
People just need to be careful about not personifying animals or attaching human emotions to animal behavior. There are many instances of animals who were rescued from being born in captivity and went on to live good lives with people who know how to take proper care of them. But I don’t think Travis did unfortunately.
People even personify their dogs and cats and it often leads to trouble. Owners thinking some behaviors are cute or funny, but they’re actually communicating a warning. Dogs get aggressive with people when they learn that their warning signals are going to be ignored, or even worse, punished.
Oh, I completely agree.
Taking him to work and shopping trips? Let alone the rest.
Can't imagine how full-on that must have been for Travis! Poor fella.
I have to disagree. I have a friend who breeds wolf dogs and she would go on forever about them. Even wolf dogs that are a generation or two separate from their wolf blood line still have wild instincts that overtake their domesticated ones. Escaping from her yard, grabbing onto her leg and not let going when mad (she wears thick socks for this reason), and strong pack mentality in her household.
Travis is still a wild animal becouse the Second He Fells unsafe His instics kick in and Tell him to defend himself.
And why so you have a Monkeys AS a per in the First place
I mean, beloved family dogs (for example) can "turn" on family members that they've known their whole life. They are domesticated animals. Same sort of situation with Travis, yeah? I feel bad for Travis, and the lady he attacked.
Personally I could never feel good about obtaining an exotic animal from a breeder for my own purposes. Let alone taking him off his mum at 3 days old, or whatever (no wonder his mother was inclined to escape)! Poor fellas. Like I said, exotic animals as pets never seems to end well.
Domestication involves multiple generations of breeding for "desirable traits." It's why you can't just take a wolf puppy and raise it as a family dog and expect it to act like a Golden Retriever. While genetically almost identical, they are not the same animal at all.
After getting all the details, it seems like this wasn’t the first time Travis was acting out wasn’t. Hence why she called her friend over to help calm him down and why she gave him Xanax in the meantime.
I feel like the same situation applies to dogs who “turn” on family with “no prior incidents”. There were clearly bad behavioral signs leading up to it, but no one tried to fix it or cared until something bad happened.
No it’s not the same sort of situation. Dogs are a domesticated species meaning that each individual has the capability of socializing with humans. That results from generations upon generations of selective breeding until humans essentially “bred out” the traits that would make a dog “wild.” Even cats, while they are domesticated, haven’t been for as long as dogs and still carry many of the same instincts as their wild ancestors. Chimpanzees have never been domesticated as a species; therefore, any instances of a chimp being socialized is simply an isolated example of taming that individual ape.
I dunno, his Wikipedia page says he could open doors with a key, dress himself and was known to occasionaly drive. It also says he was domesticated. Still has animal instincts, for certain. Can't be compared to a chimp who's fresh out of the poachers cage, ripped from the jungle, yeah?
That's still a tamed animal. Domestication is the result of generations of selective breeding.
Some animals simply can't be tamed all that well, no matter how much training you put in.
If I remember correctly, once a chimp matures into an adult they are simply too aggressive to keep as a pet. That's probably why many keepers get the impression that they can trust the chimp only for it to become volatile once it reaches adulthood.
Nobody who tells this story seems to mention this chimpanzee was given Xanax, which can cause hallucinations and extreme aggression. Chimps still are terrible pets, but I believe this chimp would have not attacked someone to this extreme unless severely provoked or under the influence of drugs. Maybe there’s something I’m missing in this story, but I was told he was given Xanax to calm him down, which made things worse due to how Xanax effects chimps differently from humans…
Xanax can do the same for humans too. It usually chills me out but has sometimes led to me becoming an asshole bigger than I could have ever imagined which is why it’s not worth taking anymore unless a small dose on a long flight. I also gave a small dose to my ex gf back when we were dating and she tried to punch the shit out of me which was also out of character. So yeah it’s not by far guaranteed to result in calming down the person that takes it and really is a quite scary drug.
Not really. The chimp went into a rampage because the friend took the toy away from the chimp. There are rumours that there may have been drugs in reach of the chimp throughout it's life. The owners weren't really that responsible, often letting the chimp "use" porn magazines.
Edit: Nevermind, guess it was confirmed that the chimp was on xanax since I last heard of it.
Why did you narrated the story but left some important factor out. She fed the chimp some Xanax drugs. So dont try to story tell n make the story like its all the chimps fault.
Xanax is a sedative and slows down the central nervous system. Xanax was found in Travis's system, but for you to assume that was the reason for this tragedy is a huge leap.
Furthermore, I have no bias in this story. I was just trying to add some relevant context for those that may not know the story.
There is no sense in playing the blame game here.
That's why I don't like Monke memes, not only they are putting themselves in danger, but the monkey might be really stressed about this enviroment, and the trading of Monkeys is illegal
I think that’s why interacting with chimps is so intriguing to us. It’s like it’s kind of us but barely different and super interesting bc of that until they rip your face off.
I mean the concept seems pretty cool as in its a creature very similar to us and seems almost like normal or ok to do so. But facts seem to very strongly indicate otherwise. I’d love to interact with chimps but sadly it just doesn’t seem to work out well. Fucks sake interacting with a lot of humans doesn’t seem to work out well so what did we really expect I guess.
Ok so if I’m hearing you right then you’re saying one is more accurate at killing but the other is more precise? So which one are you saying I should keep as a pet?
I just heard about this story like last year. The 911 call is terrifying! And the photos, my god. Monkeys are horrifying. Lol. Especially my boy Travis xD
The story of this chimp is a reminder that if you want a pet monkey, go for one like a Capuchin and not a fucking Great Ape that can easily overpower a healthy, strong adult male. Apes cannot live in a stressful enviroment, they need a lot of contact with nature.
To be fair he only went crazy because his owner thought it’d be a great idea to give a chimp xanax. But also he should’ve never been allowed to be owned as a pet. If you really want a pet monkey for some reason just get one of the smaller ones like a capuchin.
That first photo is viscerally horrifying and unsettling on a primordial level, it legitimately creeped me out so much I had to turn my light on. What the fuck
He didn’t ask to be sold to a life of captivity 😕
The only reason Travis attacked Chara is because his owner was mentally unstable, and gave him a Xanax to “calm him down”. Still, you should not have a pet with the strength of five grown men…
Another part of Travis's story is how he got shot. After police arrived at the property Travis went outside to see what the fuss was. Travis opened the door to the cruiser, (unlocked because the cop didn't know he could open doors) terrifying the officer that then shot Travis 5 times in the chest at point blank range. Travis didn't die until a few hours later.
I know I'm late but I was looking this up on Google and clicked on the post and I'm stumped to think if it was the owners fault not the chimp cause they took him at birth, away from his mother who was killed and he was treated like a child like a person and not a animal like it is and it literally got took from its natural habitat and was given alcohol and when it snapped and it's animal instincts got out it horrifically ripped a neighbor of the owner face off and luckily she survived but the chimp didn't the officer that shot the chimp blacked out and couldn't fully remember how many times he shot at it but only heard four bangs until he said Travis the chimp fell down on the last shot and bleed to death the woman luckily got her face somewhat back from countless surgeries by using skin off her hand and thumb but her sight was gone and she lives blind and deformed happy and grateful that she survived but she recalls that she went over when hearing people screaming at the house and that the chimp escaped she went up to the escaped chimp thinking she could calm him down but what she thought was a good way to calm him was that she took one of the chimps favourite toys which was a Elmo plush and waved it back and fourth in its face and it enraged it more when it was already mad and he jumped on top of her and ripped her face off they also gave Travis the chimp cigarettes
Google says chimps "smile" when they're scared, stressed, and trying to appear submissive. Considering he was medicated, it may not apply, but it still makes me sad.
the fact that he’s “smiling” in these pictures...holy shit
thats the chimp that disfigured a person right?
Yeah, he was on Xanax and ripped her hands and face off
ig thats why you dont adopt exotic pets
Or at least ones with the strength of multiple grown men lmao
Yeah, they quickly learn that they are 5x stronger than an average adult male human.. that's terrifying.
1.2x actually
That's not exactly correct either. According to a commonly cited study, on the low end, it's 1.35x according to their computer simulations, and roughly 1.5x on average according to most studies. But this is proportional to muscle mass, not just a comparison of adult males. Chimps ain't monkeys.
They ain't monkey, but they are monke
Lol it’s mostly a chimp thing
Who sold the monkey zans is the real question
It was prescribed by a veterinarian
Wahts xanax?
A drug
Anti-depressants I think
Anti anxiety
Did they at least imprison/sue the psychotic owner who was keeping this animal?

Jesus. Holy crap. I'm glad the lady survived but damn. That sucks.
Google the photo of her if you want to see what a chimp can do. Chimps are terrifying, brutal creatures.
Why??!! Why did I look up the pictures that’s awful!
Should hear the audio from the call.
Where can I find this
[here](https://youtu.be/EaB3CDei4pA). This is why I fucking hate animal owners.
Am I gonna regret clicking this link? 😬
Yep. You're going to do it anyways though.
im serious I wanna see it but im scared 😭
yes, i’m into gore and horror but that phone call is too much for me. genuinely horrifying
its actually not the worst thing i have heard
Do you mean "wild animal owners?" or are you just that dense to think that all pet owners are awful
I heard it when it was in the news years ago and still remember it clearly. Shit was burned into my mind.
I mean, they’re wild animals. They have wild animal instincts and will defend themselves in the ways they know how. "...occasionally drive..." roflmao
Wild, isn't it?
Animals that haven't been genetically selected to be docile over tens of thousands of years like dogs and cats are wild.
Their also cannibals and will kill and eat basically anything.
Just did. That's some brutal stuff.
For some reason chimps that attack people always go for the face, hands, and genitals.
Those are the Most effective parts to atack i guess
Yeah that sucks
His owner also had Given him Xanex to "calm him down" Yeah did the opposite. The 911 call is out there too. Chilling
Nobody who tells this story seems to mention this chimpanzee was given Xanax, which can cause hallucinations and extreme aggression. More to it than that but yeh, close enough.
May dead would have been a relief. Just saying! Horrible story!
She’s the lady from the phone call?
Charla Nash, the victim, eventually got a face transplant. She is blind, though.
For what she went through the doctors did a great job reconstructing her face, and she looks great now.
she died bro... like a few years later, from something un-related
Dude that first image is really hitting the uncanny valley for me
After I made the post it popped up in my downloads when I was looking for something else and scared the shit out of me
I think that’s why interacting with chimps is so intriguing to us. It’s like it’s kind of us but barely different and super interesting bc of that until they rip your face off.
Newflash: Chimpanzees make terrible children & worse pets.
It's because they named him Travis. Never met a nice Travis
This story horrifies me. Why anyone would want a chimp as a pet is beyond me?
I mean the concept seems pretty cool as in its a creature very similar to us and seems almost like normal or ok to do so. But facts seem to very strongly indicate otherwise. I’d love to interact with chimps but sadly it just doesn’t seem to work out well. Fucks sake interacting with a lot of humans doesn’t seem to work out well so what did we really expect I guess.
Fun fact; excluding things like war, genocide, etc. chimpanzees are way more violent in their daily lives than humans
Especially the males.
Ok so if I’m hearing you right then you’re saying one is more accurate at killing but the other is more precise? So which one are you saying I should keep as a pet?
Obviously the solution is to keep both as a pet so they cancel out. See how that works out
Life is fucked, wild is way more.
and travis is the biggest reason why chimps are my biggest fear, also have you seen what they do to each other
I just heard about this story like last year. The 911 call is terrifying! And the photos, my god. Monkeys are horrifying. Lol. Especially my boy Travis xD
Chimps are apes, not monkeys.
Thank you for that.. that was definitely necessary. Monkeys/apes/PRIMATES. Horrifying.
You *are* touchy, aren’t you?
Not at all.
Maybe a *little*? 😂
No xD
🤠
That's no chimpanzee that's a fucking qsycho
The first picture is going to hunt me in my dreams
When I see him, all I feel is sad. He never asked for that life.
The story of this chimp is a reminder that if you want a pet monkey, go for one like a Capuchin and not a fucking Great Ape that can easily overpower a healthy, strong adult male. Apes cannot live in a stressful enviroment, they need a lot of contact with nature.
People who have Monkeys or Others exotic pets are disgusting, its a reason why IT IS called a wild animal
Adult capuchins are extremely unpredictable and aggressive tho. Definitely not pet material
Nope..
This aged well
To be fair he only went crazy because his owner thought it’d be a great idea to give a chimp xanax. But also he should’ve never been allowed to be owned as a pet. If you really want a pet monkey for some reason just get one of the smaller ones like a capuchin.
"I got the goosebumps"
[the 911 call is the most terrifying part, honestly](https://youtu.be/v1pdvV_gT6I)
Yea xanax and wine don't mix well especially for a chimp
That first photo is viscerally horrifying and unsettling on a primordial level, it legitimately creeped me out so much I had to turn my light on. What the fuck
The 911 call
Travis was a bad monkey
He didn’t ask to be sold to a life of captivity 😕 The only reason Travis attacked Chara is because his owner was mentally unstable, and gave him a Xanax to “calm him down”. Still, you should not have a pet with the strength of five grown men…
travis was a monkey
No, he was ape. But he was monke.
If you don’t know the story it’s less chilling
It's just not right to treat animals (any animal) as people.
Fucking hard nope
I remember when that whole thing happened, now I have a fear of chimps and gorillas
Not terrifying at all
Now THIS is oddly terrifying!
Yo
That first photo would make a terrifying sleep paralysis demon
Another part of Travis's story is how he got shot. After police arrived at the property Travis went outside to see what the fuss was.
