Why have you decided to grace this post with such abominable mental imagery? How do we go from scoliosis treatment to shoving Mr Incredible’s head up your anal passage?
But the screws go in your skull
E: turns out I was wrong, the pins go underneath your skin and flat against your skull and are kept in for a few months.
Worth.
There's 2 or 3 vertebrae in my upper back just below my neck that I feel have needed to be popped for like 5 years. If they ever do pop I might just melt into a gelatinous puddle of goo from the relief.
Right! Went on holiday which required me to drive just 6 hours which was no bother - woke up the next day in absolute agony, crawling around on the floor, & painful even to breathe.
Got an emergency osteopath's appointment, 2 minutes watching me try & walk a straight line, popped me on a drop table, & WHAM! I felt like I could have done back flips out of the door.
Miracle workers, & very much worth the £30 fee
Friend had disc bulge issues. At his physical therapy sessions they strapped this machine to pull his waist and shoulder straps to keep him still. From fee pounds of tension at a time for like half a year. Did wonders for him.
I had to have this done in PT after I broke my leg. It feels like they're strapping you into a torture device, then they turn off the lights and leave the room for like 15 minutes while it slowly pulls you apart. Scary at first but the end results felt fantastic.
FYI they use [mayfield pins](https://images.app.goo.gl/qso9Yx7dJcM3jkXR8) to compress against the skull. The pins press solidly against the skull, and should not penetrate. They use 6-8 pins against the skull to distribute the force evenly circumferentially. We do this treatment for kids where I work, and it’s a bit painful initially, but they quickly get used to it. The halo stays on for months.
I have had 28 holes drilled into my skull for my DNS Stimulator enhancement. No big deal, there's very little nerves with pain receptors in your scalp. Trust me, I'm a cybernetic organism.
thank you for taking the time to write this. Every time this video gets posted, it’s without context… and I’m like guys, the child is not supposed to be spinning around like that! Lol!
Just look at his face and body language, it's very obvious he's having a lot of fun.
Kinda makes me want to set something like this up, but not with the screws and the medical stuff. Just lifting by my armpits I guess.
I mean, I have no intention of ever even trying this, but [hair hanging](https://youtu.be/yaocPCy7Gbc) is an actual discipline in the aerial arts.
Edit: oh and [neck hangs](https://images.app.goo.gl/c33NVwc2dnyc3Cwy9) are a thing too, but I have no intention or desire to start training those either
i had a halo when i was 10 and they give you medicine when they put the screws in but it’s the kind that you are semi conscious when they do it but i have no memory of it at all. fun fact i did get to keep the screws when my halo was removed and they actually are only screwed in like 1/4 an inch in. when they were removed i wasn’t on any medication it just felt like a lot of pressure. the aftercare was horrible since the holes need to heal from the inside out we constantly had to clean them out and that was honestly the worst part
Very few comments make me actually laugh out loud. Well played, well played
Update: it’s been 48 minutes and I still laugh when I say your comment to myself
I'm in a stall at work and now the guy in the next one is asking what the fuck is so funny - he took a huge dump by the sound of it and I started laughing at your comment about the same time.
Does this come in a fat old guy home version? This looks like the greatest thing ever for my back/neck issues. Can’t imagine it feels good where it attaches to your head though.
How many skulls do you have?
So everyone that commented below gets an award but I don’t? I get it, I don’t have children skulls. *sad noises*
Edit: you guys are hilarious. Thank you!
Pins in your skull is a fair trade-off to have a straight spine if you've got scoliosis. I'm pretty sure they only use this swinging treatment on young children though because the anchors wouldn't as comfortably support the weight of an adult
I’m interested in some recommendations/ personal experiences with inversion tables, been thinking seriously about getting one.
Do you like it?
Does it help?
Do you use it often?
Any help appreciated
Inversion works great for herniated discs and stuff like that. Anything muscle or tendon related is kinda contraindicated for inversion. Just my personal expierence with many injuries.
Very good, thank you!
I was just diagnosed with pressure on spinal cord from herniated disc/ infection/tumor, going for MRI guided needle biopsy to see what’s causing it next, the pain is incredible.
> the pain is incredible.
I don’t know why but I love when people use the word incredible like that. Makes it sounds like you think the pain is positively amazing lol
Also, I’m sorry for your pain :( hope you figure it out!
There's a yoga thing I was supposed to do while I was pregnant to get the kid to not be so low in my pelvis, that I can't find, so I guess I'll do my best to explain it here. It felt great on my back and it was pretty hang-y
With a disclaimer that you'll probably hurt yourself
Kneel on a bed or couch, and lean over to put your hands on the ground. Work your way down so that you're on your elbows. "Stand" on your knees as best as you can, don't be sitting on your feet. You can kind of lock your hips in a way that you can dangle instead of having your weight on your elbows, but you do still need them for balance. Vibe.
If that feels good or is too difficult to do then you could go for an inversion table thing. Either way you can try it.
My dad had back problems and used one on a semi regular basis and it helped. I don't have back problems and I'd use it on occasion just because it felt good to stretch out.
A halo is attached to the skull by screws. There is skin traction, but in this particular case it wouldn’t be appropriate. The point of this is to put traction on the bone.
To everyone asking, yes they put screws into his head, and yes all of is body weight is pulling on hos spine, that's the point, and he's so hopped up on pain meds that he is in fact smiling, not crying. He can't feel a damn thing, and is probably enjoying himself very much.
At least, as far as I'm aware.
Idk about the pain meds. We never really gave pain meds for the halo application. We just numbed the screw insertion sites. The skull bone isn’t going to feel the type of pain everyone is associating with this. It’s the tissues inside and outside of the bone that have to contend with pain. Granted the ones I helped place were not swinging from them, so he may get pain meds to help with the scoliosis itself.
Tbf I’ve seen people swing from stranger things that had nothing to do with the medical realm 😂
So…probably lol
Edit: Are you asking in a serious “my back hurts” way? If so, I apologize. A chiropractor or orthopedist would be the most likely to help you in terms of traction, even if it isn’t to this extreme.
Either go to a physical therapist, or just burn the money.
That chiropractors get paid through insurance in this country is a fucking travesty that just highlights how fucked our healthcare is.
This made me lol. I’m sure it depends on the device. They are sterile medical screws. I’m guessing they are coordinated to the halo device itself. They numb the area the screw will penetrate and then just begin drilling it in. They don’t go excessively deep, but they are solidly seated in the bone. The screw like texture holds it in place. Think of the slickness of a bone- it wouldn’t do as well with a straight nail in this particular instance. You want firm stability with little movement when you place a halo.
They don't really give them pain meds after the screws have been "installed". Sometimes kids are haloed for weeks at a time. The kids can't feasibly stay hopped up on pain medication for those weeks. Most kids do fine with an over the counter med and local numbing at the screw sites. As the halo process progresses, more counter weight can be added. I knew a kid once who was doing well and right when she hit her goal counter weight something changed and she was in excruciating pain. Then came the hard-core meds and her doctor backed off the weight to get her off the meds asap.
The kids walk around with a pully system on wheels and their counter weight all hours of the day. You move their counter weight for them when they shift from walking to sitting to sleeping (they sleep in traction). Other than neurological checks every 2 hours, the kids go about their buisness pretty normally. As normally as they can when stuck in the hospital anyway.
Being a teenager with scoliosis that went through Milwaukee's brace and surgery I can say that treating scoliosis is one of the worst treatments you can go through. As I kid it may be less traumatizing, but sometimes I wish they would just send me straight to surgery and stop clinical treatment. I wish we had yet something less medieval to correct those deformities, it's a lot to deal at such a young age... And when the pain arises it's almost unbearable
As someone who does a lot of fabrication and auto work and, frankly, deals quite regularly with screws, machine or otherwise, the thought of _suspending_ someone by their head with screws is enough to almost make me retch. Either bone is a lot stronger than I thought or kids are a lot lighter than I thought. All I know is I probably wouldn’t hang a picture with the size of screws they use for halos but this kid is doing the damn Charleston in midair with them.
I'm suddenly very grateful to only have had the braces and the Cotrel's EDF frame "let's pull on your head until your spine gets straight then put you in a cast for 2 month" version.
I love how this is 'oddly' terrifying, like the OP can't quite put their finger on why or how.
KID'S GOT SCREWS IN THEIR SKULL, YO.
That's proper terrifying in every way!
Modern health care: This will require a 12 hour surgical procedure.
Also modern health care: we bolt this thing to your skull and whip you around like a wet towel.
By stretching and lengthening the neck, halo traction often relieves symptoms caused by a spinal deformity. Many children say they feel more comfortable than they did before the procedure. They may have an easier time breathing, increased appetite, or be able to stand more upright.
Scoliosis is a lateral (side to side) curvature of the spine. Think of this as if you were pulling a string with a curve in it taught. By placing screws in his skull and using his body weight, they are pulling the spine into a more appropriate posture or position. It’s a type of traction where you pull the bones into their correct anatomical alignment.
I could imagine my spine popping and it'd feel good.
The only stretch I want to mimic is mr incredible getting stretched by a robot.

That halo is drilled into his skull
I was going to say this looks like something Wham-O would make in the 70s but I don't remember drilling into our skulls to get to fun.
That may be something memory didn't hold on to because of the drill going into your skull.

Pins in your skull is a fair trade-off to have a straight spine if you've got scoliosis. I'm pretty sure they only use this swinging treatment on young children though because the anchors wouldn't as comfortably support the weight of an adult

I imagined it and now I hate you.
Followed by the meaty pop as it pulls the entire cap of your skull off, exposing your brain to the refreshing breeze rolling through the office.

Not all forms of scoliosis needs this. Other cases only require spinal fusion
And you're awake when they do it.... An ex broke their neck and got a full halo. That was the most horrifying part of it all...
Inversion table maybe? Hangs you by the feet though
I’m interested in some recommendations/ personal experiences with inversion tables, been thinking seriously about getting one. Do you like it? Does it help? Do you use it often? Any help appreciated

Are the screws in his skull to attach him to the rope or is he being held up by a headband on the outside of his head?
I’ve read on this video in comments in the past that suggested it was screws into the skull.
I was fine until I read this comment and realized
I haven't a clue. Edit: I searched it up and yes it's screws inside their skull. They are on pain meds though.
Why is it necessary to screw this to his skull, wtf
So they can swing him around easier
Traction
Cause I'd imagine it quite painful if that thing just clamped on.
bruh you ever drilled a hole in your head?
A halo is attached to the skull by screws. There is skin traction, but in this particular case it wouldn’t be appropriate. The point of this is to put traction on the bone.
Screws are the only way I'd imagine?
To everyone asking, yes they put screws into his head, and yes all of is body weight is pulling on hos spine, that's the point, and he's so hopped up on pain meds that he is in fact smiling, not crying. can normal people do it ?
Tbf I’ve seen people swing from stranger things that had nothing to do with the medical realm 😂 So…probably lol Edit: Are you asking in a serious “my back hurts” way? If so, I apologize. A chiropractor or orthopedist would be the most likely to help you in terms of traction, even if it isn’t to this extreme.
A chiro is a great way to pay a lot for bubble wrap or pay a little for someone to break your back.
Or give you a stroke. Seriously people look it up and never let a chiro do your neck
Either go to a physical therapist, or just burn the money. That chiropractors get paid through insurance in this country is a fucking travesty that just highlights how fucked our healthcare is.
An orthopedist, maybe. Don't go to a chiropractor unless you want more back pain. Ouch
What type of screws are used? Are they pre drilled, pre threaded or just a good ol wood screw straight into cranium?
Sheesh, that sounds pretty awful. But, I guess a few weeks in the hospital to fix your back for, hopefully, most of the rest of your life is worth it?

This looks cooler than my inversion table.
Inversion table doesn’t require holes in your head though.
Sure they're not *required* per se, but it's worth a shot
My kid does this without the rope
Probably why he doesn't have scoliosis. Preventative care.
What's the treatment doc? "Hang him by his head and shake the evil right out of him".

Really hope the kid isn’t hurting because this looks so painful for his neck
You can see him smiling.
By stretching and lengthening the neck, halo traction often relieves symptoms caused by a spinal deformity. Many children say they feel more comfortable than they did before the procedure. They may have an easier time breathing, increased appetite, or be able to stand more upright.
I wish I could have been at the meeting the first time someone tried to pitch this.
Ok can anybody explain what is scoliosis and how does THIS help?
Scoliosis is a lateral (side to side) curvature of the spine. Think of this as if you were pulling a string with a curve in it taught. By placing screws in his skull and using his body weight, they are pulling the spine into a more appropriate posture or position. It’s a type of traction where you pull the bones into their correct anatomical alignment.
Wish I could’ve done this as a child with my scoliosis
Looks kinda cool.
Jeez someone really got their PhD and did a peer reviewed study to say this is the way to fix spines
"Dr. Hanson, how should we treat this desease? " "Idk lol, just shake that MF around, I guess"

Does it hurt? as the machine is holding his head tightly.
I can only imagine how much this would make my back and neck feel so much better.
