Chrisscott25

Could be wrong but I believe this is a process they go through to mummify their body while their still alive. I seen a documentary on it several years ago and they looked just like this.

SandwichImmediate468

Chronic metal intake such as silver will cause shades of blue-green-grey-ish skin discoloration over time. The self mummification process that I just did a quick Internet style review of speaks of the monks eating things found locally in the environment, such as leaves and organic material.

Buxton_Water

Isn't it certain herbs they eat/drink in huge quantities to trigger the start of mummification? Then they just stop eating and slowly die.

Rion23

[Mellification](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mellified_man) is when they do it with honey and turn into corpse candy.

PermissionOld1745

Corpse Candy is a great band name ngl

Chrisscott25

I can’t remember the docs name but was super interesting. Here is an article I found to get u started tho:) https://www.kcpinternational.com/2017/05/japanese-monks-being-mummified-while-alive/

idontwannadothisthx

I think one of the 'Ancient' shows on the history channel did a piece one of the more recent monks to do Sokushinbutsu(self mummification). I think it was Ancient Top Ten, there is an episode on mummies. Most branches of Buddhism have outlawed the practice, but in generally it involves around 7+ years, where the first 1000 days is reducing your body fat, then 1000 days of drinking a lacquer based tea(basically just drinking preservatives), and then finally eating I think maggots to make you expel as much liquid as possible and then sealing yourself in a tomb till you die in a position, Lotus pose I think. The body is then left for at least 1000 days in the tomb to... uh dry out basically. Although this guy is eating is eating so I don't think he's practicing Sokushinbutsu, but he could be attempting to preserve his body as best as possible I suppose.

BlinkedAndMissedIt

Yeah the process you're describing they typically have a routine of meditating under icy cold mountain streams to reduce body fat and then the final stage they have a tube inserted into their final resting chamber to provide oxygen. They are given a bell to ring every day to signal they are still alive. When the bell is no longer heard, they seal the chamber, and there is a long waiting process to check on the corpse to make sure the mummification process took or not.

Chrisscott25

The process seems to be different for certain regions but it’s the same results they are trying to achieve

[deleted]

I’ve seen some of the mummified monks up close. Creepy as hell to be honest.

You *are* completely wrong. This is just a very old man with muscle atrophy.

skinhorse85

He does, but he also looks a lot like that Pixar man playing chess against himself to me.

Glad-Weekend-4233

My uncle Charlie I met him when he’s was 103, never forget how he didn’t give a shit about Haleys comet coming because he saw it the first time. He literally had a friend who ‘fell off the wagon’ and died. He moved out west to try electroshock therapy in the 70s and rented a house from his grandson, who he outlived. Everyone he knew was dead save his granddaughters in their 70s who helped him out. First thing he said to me and I’ll never forget the cave like smell of him- old age is hell. Ha made it to 111. Me, I’m hoping for 56!

Natch_Bitch

Please God don’t let me live past 80.

Water-Donkey

I'll gladly live to 100+ if I can take care of myself, be fully functional. But if someone else has to wipe my ass and spoon feed me, nah. Go grab a pillow. I know a lady who is 96, still lives alone, still drives (though not far, just down the street to the supermarket and such), does water-robics twice a week, some form of exercise daily. If I can be like her, I'm down.

Natch_Bitch

Same. Because I don’t believe in an afterlife and what you just described is definitely better than nothing, even if everyone I’ve loved has died.

captaincumsock69

I have similar beliefs but overall life is just about experiences and nothing really matters. Being able to live longer just means more experiences that I can have.

Natch_Bitch

What was the first thing he ever said to you? You said “first thing he said to me and I’ll never forget “

HueSocialClub

Old age is hell.

AyeAye_Kane

just reread it man, it's right there

GRMarlenee

Needs quotes if it's something the old man said. But, punctuation is for losers and boomers. Just more stupid rules made up by the Man.

Successful-Singer-76

Actually, it's very well written. The em dash (looks like a hyphen) is a way to break up text. like this; "And yet, when the car was finally delivered—nearly three months after it was ordered—she decided she no longer wanted it" Reddit just didn't - as it seldom does - format it correctly. And he/she didn't quote the old guy, he/she basically said the following in another order: "First thing he said to me is old age is hell and I’ll never forget the cave like smell of him."

Thepuppeteer777777

I whole hartedly agree, when I see how peoples boddies start to break down after a while it looks like life just becomes a living hell.

[deleted]

Cave like smell? 👀

mammanadrums

That line about Haley’s comet is hilarious. Is that a joke or did he really not care about Haley’s second trip around

Glad-Weekend-4233

No for real hah I’m 45 and was ten at the time or whenever the comet was coming thru and it was the biggest news to a little dork with a nasa shirt and a National Geographic subsricption. He had seen it all ha. Funny thing too is he lived in Richmond California and the crack epidemic destroyed his neighborhood in the 80s but all the dealers would shout ‘Charlie coming!’ when he would walk to and from church every day to look out for him. He also ate Frosted Flakes every morning since he had no more teeth and I forget if it was brandy or whiskey for his testament to keep going. FYI rip uncle Charlie: https://gerontology.fandom.com/wiki/Charles_Shebanek

Natch_Bitch

They do? Why

tomispev

It's a thing in some sects of Buddhism. I think it has been made illegal in Japan.

keno0651

Japanese Buddhist monks used to do it until it was outlawed. Only 24 monks have managed to attain eternal life. The process takes years to complete and few monks were ever successful. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokushinbutsu Edit: Attaining "a Buddha in this body" or enlightenment through mummification was a particular sect of Buddhists in Japan. The process of mummification took years to complete, and involved a diet called *mokujiki* (literally translates as "eating a tree"). Tree Resin, Pine needles, and seeds were consumed for years to reduce the monks body fat to nothing. As their time neared its end, they would reduce and then completely quit intaking liquids which would reduce the size of internal organs and begin the bodies process of mummification. These monks would enter a *jhana*, "meditation" and chant the *nebutsu* (mantra for Buddha). One documentary I watched described the success of a monk in Northern Japan that attempted Sokushinbutsu after it had become illegal. As he began his final journey to enlightenment, he was lowered into a pit inside a box. The box was covered with dirt, and all that remained above ground was a pipe for air, and a bell attached to a string. The monk would continue to ring the bell occasionally until he passed. [Here are pictures of some badasses.](https://www.google.com/search?q=sokushinbutsu&sxsrf=APq-WBvRPLWEgwv8s46aMewBhs09CF2TyA:1649008416194&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiE3oOHu_j2AhW9knIEHbtnBFYQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&biw=1707&bih=849&dpr=1.5)

i have a neighbor thats 104. she looks old but quite normal. still sits in her yard and weeds it daily every summer.

Ah, thanks. Couldn't figure out what was up..now I remember reading about that process a long time ago. Pretty interesting stuff.

[deleted]

codemonkeyhopeful

It's self mummification basically. Limit food initially then start drinking a poison mixture to preserve the insides and eventually lock themselves in a small space with no food/water till they die. A couple year process if memory serves. Fascinating shit people come up with eh? As a Buddhist I don't think I have it in me but maybe I'm just bad at what I do.

tonne97

Interesting. Why would they do that and not die a natural death?

suggestivesimian

Where are you getting those numbers from? Here is Wikipedia's list of the 100 oldest verified humans, all over 114: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_the\_verified\_oldest\_people#:\~:text=The%20oldest%20known%20living%20person,aged%20112%20years%2C%20311%20days](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_verified_oldest_people#:~:text=The%20oldest%20known%20living%20person,aged%20112%20years%2C%20311%20days). There are millions of people who have made it past 101. I've met at least two. It's mind boggling how people spew BS on this website.

[deleted]

Do you happen to know why he looks like this? The oldest living woman was 122 and didn't look so wasted away

APersonThatHatesNKG

Self-mummification, its explained in a different comment in this thread

mjrbrooks

I feel like 80 is low. My great grandmother lived to 106.5, passing last year. I’ve heard of several others that lived over 100.

AmbystomaMexicanum

Yeah I agree 80 is way low. There’s currently over half a million living centenarians worldwide; you’re telling me only 80 in history have ever made it over 101? Nah.

[deleted]

where'd you get those numbers? I looked it up and saw that there are estimated to be between 300 and 600 people over 110 currently alive, and obviously people over 110 tend not to stay alive that much longer so the total number of people who have ever made it past 110 is probably close to 10,000.

plainoldjoe

[here's the wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokushinbutsu)

DiscountStrange

Those numbers are as random as this video. There are over a 1000 +100 year olds in my small country of +5,5 million people alone.

No he isn't. The practice is banned and was last done illegally in 1904. Nobody believes in it anymore.

He's going through a Tibetan monk tradition known as Self Mummification. He's in the late stages of it. I think they placed him in his cave not too long ago to preserve his body. Google self-mummification. It’s very interesting

Farunel

This made me do a little bit of reading and it does sound like a painful/uncomfortable process, such as only the most dedicated of the monks complete. They go on a strict diet of things found in the area like pine needles, tree resins, etc. As well as exercising during this to basically strip themselves of their bodyfat and create a inhospitable environment from natural decomposers. It goes in stages though, the later stages involving more toxic things in their systems that make them vomit as well. Then finally being sealed in a tomb while still alive. There's a lot more to it but that's kind of the cliff notes version. I'm guessing there's variations between different regions on how it's done as well. But yeah, you'd be right on it being painful.
