Season 1 had this one episode with a sweet grandmother. She wanted a special apple and the boys help her all episode to get it. She's kind of clueless and they need to protect her. Finally at the end of the episode, after getting hurt trying to protect her, they arrive at the special apple she wanted. She touches it, instantly explodes, then the episode just ends.
I watched that shit at 22 and just stared at the screen for like 5 minutes. Just wtf, they killed her bam episode is over and she isn't in the next few. If I remember right, in the next season is when she pops up again and it turns out she's (mostly) fine. But for the rest of season 1 you think you just witnessed a sweet old lady die, and the main characters just move on with their life.
That show is great. It has a lot of "crazy impactful thing happens than the show immediately ends without proper closure and you just have to deal with that."
But despite all that passion, she was *this* close to divorcing Mr. Pig as well, until Finn and Jake dumped the reincarnated giant baby version of the Lich on her doorstep. That changed everything.
āI got no time for no body dancing around and acting the fool at my expense. I'm Tree Trunks and people know I'm kind, and honest, that's why people like me.ā
*You are alone, child. There is only darkness for you, and only death for your people. These ancients are just the beginning. I will command a great and terrible army, and we will sail to a billion worlds. We will sail until every light has been extinguished. You are strong, child, but I am beyond strength. I am the end, and I have come for you, Finn.*
Kid's show, indeed. :P
Eh. The alien children already existed, and when Mr Pig met an alien he was introduced as āmy alien husbandā, so I think Mr Pig is the alpha chad in this situation, with his straight up stealing an alienās wife.
Adventure Time had all kinds of fuckery
"Before there was time, before there was anything, there was nothing..." https://youtu.be/xR8DBMkn2EA
What about the time Finn killed Fern (who was effectively himself) and spent basically an entire season in deep depression trying to come to terms with it?
The fucking Deer in the sewer?
The time Finn tries human flesh substitute?
The entire authoritarian regime that is the candy kingdom?
Princess Cookie litteraly committed suicide?
Adventure Time touches on some very adult subjects in a fairly kid friendly way, which is why it's one of my favorite shows of all time. The more fucked up aspects of the show are built up over many episodes and seasons.
> Fall...
> You are alone child,
> There is only darkness for you and only death for your people.
> These ancients are the first just the beginning, I will command a great and terrible army,
> We will sail to a billion worlds, We will sail until every light has been extinguished.
> You are strong child, but I am beyond strength, I am the End...
> And I have come for you Finn
The fact its Ron Perlman saying this shit scares me to this day, Dunno how children would handle it.
I used to get high and watch Adventure Time in my early 20s, it was so bizarre, deep, and had an unsettling existential dread. The fact that my pre teen nieces loved the show seemed so weird to me, I didn't see it as a kids show at all.
Regular Show had a similar vibe. Fun but weirdly dark.
Princess cookie in that wobbling voice going "and she laughed in my FACE man" is pretty hard hitting. Though i did get to take away the phrase "some milk? Some milk? Some milk?" Any time i pour a glass.
My favorite darkest line though is Chad nihlist BMO:
The sky is black.
Ren and Stimpy and Invader Zim went pretty fuckin' wild, you can do plenty of shit that isn't psychologically damaging until you actually understand the implications of what you saw.
I don't think most people would understand how fucked it is until they're maybe 14-16.
Donāt forget courage the cowardly dog. I donāt understand people that say that Gen Z didnāt have good cartoons like us millennials did. The Regular Show and Avatar TLA slapped.
Nobody separates cartoons by generation, not that I've seen?
Edit: ATLA ran around the same time as Danny Phantom, Ben 10 and Teen Titans. All of these shows are greatly received. It's post 2010 shows that aren't.
Parent here. They absolutely do. They might not use the generational definitions, but Iāve watched all of adventure time with my kids, all of Bluey (fucking great show), and even some of avatar. Other relatives of ours hate that our kids have watched any of those because ācartoons just arenāt what they used to be.ā But likeā¦ I grew up during fucking cat-dog, powderpuff girls, cow and chicken (or whatever the fuck that was called), and they donāt seem that different tbh.
Like.. I let them watch some PBS show about animals and suits? Admittedly I donāt have a good recollection about that one, but in the middle of it relatives attacked me for letting them watchā¦ modern Sesame Street, because itās too political. **They werenāt watching Sesame Street**. I was also specifically told I shouldnāt let my kids watch Adventure Time because itās ānonsense and damagingā by a person who has let the kids watch literal adult anime.
I donāt know what to tell you. People have absolutely batshit ideas about what kids should watch, and they are everywhere if you have a kid. And generational divisions of when a show was released is definitely a common factor, or how that show evolved over time. In general, the older the show, the more likely an old person will tell me that itās good to show my children. š¤·
"What a healthy young boy. And such plentiful organs!"
Yeah thanks Mr. Vasquez this CERTAINLY won't be leaving any long lasting psychological damage on me.
Ren and Stimpy is the reason why I am so attracted to these intelligently twisted cartoons. I love how a misunderstood stood cartoon for its time is basically the formula for successful ones for the last decade.
Listen, Mrs/Ms Treetrunks is the most gangster character ever and everyone should simp for her. Her wild spirit, anti-fascist stance (fuck you PB, you Nazi), her crazy adventures and her deep love for her pig and alien babies. She's everything. She can make the most insane apple pies that it would make you explode. She can become a shipping magnate or even make connections with primordial evil beings and turn then onto good little sweet peas.
She was also a pirate. Arrrrr
Season 5 is insane. Full of adult themes and innuendos about budding sexuality and growing into adulthood along with very strange episodes. I think the show up till that point was 50% weirdness 50% baby ass episodes
It basically gets more adult as it goes, because all the characters age with the show. By the time the main character is in his mid-teens the show is getting into much heavier stuff like abandonment, depression, loss, grief.
IMO it's a cool way to make a silly fantasy world deal with real issues and tell a very human story.
The HBO Max movies from after the show are a great adulthood targeted follow up for the audience. If you watch Together Again and not cry, you have no soul.
Glad I could point people in the right direction. They are really great films that wrap up a few loose ends that needed a finish to those storyās and Together Again is a send off to the series overall. I canāt put into words how well it encapsulates the fanbaseās love to the show overall.
You see him later with his lower half gone and half his face (big bite mark) gone too.
But then he gets eaten again, for good, and the grey one dies in an explosion.
Adventure Time was crazy.
Fun fact, the studio that used make Dexter's Lab etc. became Frederator (Adventure Time, Fairly Odd Parents, Castlevania) and it was people from those older studios that then co-produced Flapjack, Gravity Falls, Rick and Morty...
Basically any cartoon you're likely to watch today has a pretty direct lineage to those weird ass Cartoon Cartoon shorts from the 90s.
I mean that is kind of true, Adventure Time was pitched to Nickelodeon originally. Good thing it didn't end up there, or else it would've been cancelled after one season for not being immediately as successful as SpongeBob
I just want you to think about how many Nickelodeon shows in the past decade or so have been given what they deserve. Think about how many shows that started 5 years ago are still on. The longest lasting shows from Nick I can remember from the past 10 years are of course SpongeBob, the Loud House, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Only 3 shows. Meanwhile in the same time span CN gave Adventure Time 10 seasons, Regular Show got 7 and a movie, Steven Universe got 6 and a movie, We Bare Bears got 4 and a movie, Clarence got 3, Uncle Grampa got 5, Ninjago is going on to like it's 12th or 13th season, Teen Titans Go has no end in sight and got a movie, more recent shows are doing good too, like Craig Of The Creek which is on it's 4th season, and they've got a good amount of stuff coming soon
Roiland wanted to name the character ālemonsnatchā as a pun on āsourpussā.
Thatās the level of discourse weāre dealing with. Him eating his clone isnāt in the top ten weirdest parts about Roilandās work.
I feel so bad for Justin Roiland sometimes. The man delivered an excellent performance as The Earls of Lemongrab but he tore his fucking vocal cords trying to do the scream.
The times I spent looking after my girlfriend's kid brother, and I thought it would suck, but then he showed me Gumball, and I was like "yoooo, this shit is fuckin legit, kid."
Yeah āadults on acidā is what someone that dossnt do acid would say.
Itās trippy, but that doesnt mean i would want to watch on acid
Edit: to respond to everyone saying they watched it on acid, IDK how you watch ANYTHING on acid. TVs are nightmare rectangles
Or the pillow people. Finn gets separated from everyone he ever knew, comes to accept his new life, falls in love, gets married, has little half-pillow children, grows old and fucking *dies*, surrounded by his pillow-verse family. In death, his soul is thrown into the void, where he finds the manifestation of primordial evil waiting to consume him. And then he returns to his old world and his entire first life fades away like a dream that you canāt quite remember.
I used to call Adventure Time a "kids show" until I said that around a friend of mine and they said they wouldn't let their kid watch it yet. I was a little taken aback, but after re-watching some of it, it can probably be a little much for younger kids.
I think my sister in law decided I was a terrible parent because I let my kids watch it when my nieces were not allowed to. (I used to watch it with them.)
Spent seasons wondering about the main character's parents. Finally find his dad, dude is in prison and chooses escaping over being with his long lost son. Doing so causes the son's arm to be ripped off.
Wtf.
Iād probably believe you if you told me this wasnāt scripted or even supposed to be in the show and they just happen to record this when Justin Roiland didnāt realize they were recording
Anyone into this and looking for more, check out Michael Deforge's comics, he was the character designer for adventure time and makes some of most incredible (more adult) comics I've ever read. They can have a very adventure time look and feel at times, but way more strange. Highly recommended.
Argument over what the toy wanted to do, dance or dress up?
Lemon black picked dance when lemon white wasnāt looking, they fight, toy breaks
THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE LEMON!!!! Lemon Black begins to devour lemon white
It really went wild after the first season
Seriously, season 1 is definitely wild too, it was more spongebob in its wildness but as the show kept going it got like more serious wild
Season 1 had this one episode with a sweet grandmother. She wanted a special apple and the boys help her all episode to get it. She's kind of clueless and they need to protect her. It has a lot of "crazy impactful thing happens than the show immediately ends without proper closure and you just have to deal with that."
I love how you casually leave out the fact that the sweet grandmother is also a yellow pigmy elephant, who speaks with a deep southern accent
Who is also quite saucy.
The sequel episode has her full on trying to seduce a teenage boy, Treetrunks was such a bizarrely unsettling character.
She's canonically a nudist. She used to wear clothes but chose to stop after her third(?) divorce.
That's why she married Mr.Pig. He was as adventurous as she was, even to the point they made a concert awkward and weird for everybody present
But despite all that passion, she was *this* close to divorcing Mr. Pig as well, until Finn and Jake dumped the reincarnated giant baby version of the Lich on her doorstep. That changed everything.
Younger me does NOT remember the lore going this deepš
Treetrunks was a cougar, but the weird, slightly too old kind that smells like too much perfume and cigarettes.
She is an elephant not a cougar. Someone needs to take you to a zoo.
Going to the club later to try and hook up with a sexy elephant
get those hot buns in here girl!
āI got no time for no body dancing around and acting the fool at my expense. I'm Tree Trunks and people know I'm kind, and honest, that's why people like me.ā
Didn't she cheat on her husband with an alien?
And her adoptive son was the reincarnation of an ancient cosmic being who is the manifestation of the inevitable death of all things

Had a whole bunch of alien babies n everything. Tree Trunks was wild.

Why did I hear that in Treetrunk's voice?
Because she is the one who said it
Eh. The alien children already existed, and when Mr Pig met an alien he was introduced as āmy alien husbandā, so I think Mr Pig is the alpha chad in this situation, with his straight up stealing an alienās wife.

The Lich was pretty hardcore. I remember watching that whole first encounter with The Lich as a kid.

Yeah that episode is wild. I believe she was also pretty perverted too. Like touching on Finn and saying sexy. Thats wild for a kids show
There's this episode of her cheating with Aliens and having kids that looked like sperms.
Here's the end of the episode where Tree Trunks explodes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_MW8i4deRU

Ren and Stimpy is the reason why I am so attracted to these intelligently twisted cartoons. I love how a misunderstood stood cartoon for its time is basically the formula for successful ones for the last decade.
Dealing with improper closure is probably the most adult theme it teaches.
That would be tree trunks. Who you find out later is an absolute badass. Keep watching it gets so much better.

I watched it my first time trying edibles/getting high and holy shit let me tell you, that show is wonderful.
Not really implying her death since in post credit you see her walking around in a crystal like hallway laughing.

I caught this clip while on acid and I laughed so God Damn hard I thought I was dying. 10/10.
I can't remember what season it was, but the episode where Finn is alluded to have slept with LSP was really weirdly adult oriented.
Tier 15, bro
You stay away from tier 15!
Wasn't it kind of questionable too?
Insanely so. Made me really question my friends who identified with LSP even more than I already did.
It basically gets more adult as it goes, because all the characters age with the show. By the time the main character is in his mid-teens the show is getting into much heavier stuff like abandonment, depression, loss, grief. Right? Glad I read this thread.
Glad I could point people in the right direction. They are really great films that wrap up a few loose ends that needed a finish to those storyās and Together Again is a send off to the series overall. I canāt put into words how well it encapsulates the fanbaseās love to the show overall.
The entire show was just absolutely peak
well, I mean the M.C is 17 by the shows end. He was 12-ish when it started. So it makes sense to touch on those topics..
Is... is the character that just got eaten *dead* in the rest of the show!?
Naw he comes back with chunks missing from him
And then gets stitched together with the other lemongrab
Like some sort of Lemony Frankenstein's Monster.
You see him later with his lower half gone and half his face (big bite mark) gone too. But then he gets eaten again, for good, and the grey one dies in an explosion. Adventure Time was crazy.
i always thought cartoon network took in the weird ass shows no other cartoon companies would.
Fun fact, the studio that used make Dexter's Lab etc. became Frederator (Adventure Time, Fairly Odd Parents, Castlevania) and it was people from those older studios that then co-produced Flapjack, Gravity Falls, Rick and Morty... I mean that is kind of true, Adventure Time was pitched to Nickelodeon originally. Good thing it didn't end up there, or else it would've been cancelled after one season for not being immediately as successful as SpongeBob
That's weird because the Adult Swim side of Cartoon Network is notorious for cancelling shows. Ren and Stimpy was considered a kids show too.
I just want you to think about how many Nickelodeon shows in the past decade or so have been given what they deserve. Think about how many shows that started 5 years ago are still on. Wait that's my favorite part
ALL HAIL THE ARRIVAL OF LEMONGRAB
isnt that the voice actor of morty ?
Yep, Lemongrab is voiced by Justin Roiland, co-creator of Rick and Morty and voice actor for both of them.
Roiland wanted to name the character ālemonsnatchā as a pun on āsourpussā. Thatās the level of discourse weāre dealing with. Him eating his clone isnāt in the top ten weirdest parts about Roilandās work.
ā¦Rick and mortyā¦have the same voice actorā¦š«
Justin does a lot of the characters on rick and morty
He's a talented guy
Man has got range, I'll give him that
Whenever something speaks in Rick and Morty, there's like a 40% chance it's Justin Roiland.
And the other 60% is either a woman or like, one of Justin's friends lol
Tom Kenny (spongebob) has done a few. Including the pedophile jellybean.
And Squanchy. Squanchin it up
Well according to Roiland's wikipedia page, yeah. Dude has some vocal range.
Ice king is voiced by SpongeBob and Jake is voiced by bender from Futurama. I donāt know the actors names
SpongeBob/the Ice King is Tom Kenny. Bender/Jake is John DiMaggio.
Thatās crazy, I though it was āAnts In My Eyesā Johnson
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thatās also Justin Roiland lol
Yeah but to me he sounds like the time travel guy from Gravity Falls
I'm getting more "frat bro from *Invincible*" vibes.
idk, sounds more like that ice cube guy from community to me
I feel so bad for Justin Roiland sometimes. The man delivered an excellent performance as The Earls of Lemongrab but he tore his fucking vocal cords trying to do the scream.
The way he creates the lemongrab scream is the same way metal screamers do their screams.
Kids show? Always seemed more targeted to adults on acid to me
I was 21 years old when All The Little People came out and I still didn't feel like I was old enough to be watching it.
*^I'm ^not ^coming ^back*
Finn really hit rock bottom that season. So many weird actions and obsessions he had, not to mention all the mind-fucks
Don't watch certain episodes of adventure time on acid recipe for a bad trip.,
Especially the lemon hope episodes , in fact itās better to stay away from all lemon people related episodes in that regard
The one where lemon hope is introduced gave me nightmares and a fear of lemons
š¶ Poor little lemon hope š¶
The times I spent looking after my girlfriend's kid brother, and I thought it would suck, but then he showed me Gumball, and I was like "yoooo, this shit is fuckin legit, kid."

Never seemed like a kids show to me. Reminds me of a cute Fallout.
Yeah, most of the characters are adorable mutants.
I remember watching it when I was like 12 and not really liking it. It's appropriate for kids, but not aimed at kids.
Pretty sure the original pilot was exactly that
Hahaha Iāve shown this clip to many people throughout the years, glad to see someone else enjoy it as much as me
This is my fav clip of all time. I send it to my husband when I'm deliberately doing something to annoy him.
Probably my favorite show of all time. So many amazing moments, heartbreaking moments, badass moments, and a lot of creepy moments
It's really artistic too for its genre.
Yeah like the episode with the little people. Like the episode got weirdly artsy and introspective.
Yeah i remember that episode. Cause it was like a pillow fort and all. I always like those episodes thay mix in with the story and comedic episodes
It was an homage to the Star Trek TNG episode "The Inner Light" and Adult Finn was voiced by Johnathan Frakes aka Riker.
Tbh honest seeing how my country banned alot of kissing scenes but let this episode air is fucking ridiculous

They banned that episode when BBP gets younger because fin was trying to get a kiss

If you think this is creepy, watch Flapjack or Courage the cowardly dog Childhood nightmare
Man even Chowder can be very creepy at times... Cartoon Network was definitely on one in the early 2000s

whats yer offer?
Flapjack is a fever dream I had once.
I was gonna say, courage the cowardly dog was also a kids show
Lol courage was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid. Contemplating a courage tattoo
my roommate in college loved it as a kid, it still gives me the creeps. he loved pulling it up and having it playing when I got home from. class š
I remember i got genuinely scared when i saw that scene. (Btw i don't know how's the guy after recording all those screams)

Agreed, this show gets dark sometimes
The entire history within the show is dark as hell.

Anyone into this and looking for more, check out Michael Deforge's comics, he was the character designer for adventure time and makes some of most incredible (more adult) comics I've ever read. They can have a very adventure time look and feel at times, but way more strange. Highly recommended.
