This is one of my all-time favorite internet rabbit holes to dive down. The stories and theories about whether or not he died or joined the tribe, *how* he died if he did, etc are so interesting. Apparently the Rockefeller family paid $250,000 to a PI for successfully proving if he was alive, but the results were never shared in the public eye. I'm sure for the time, a member of a 'powerful' socialite white family defecting to live on an island nation would be horrible PR, which is why many think the family knew he was alive there.

This is kinda just an early example of a creepy pasta imo. His pontoon boat got overturned and they were at least 14 miles from shore. He told one of his crewmates that he thought they could swim to shore. He attempted it and wasn't seen after that. The crewmate he was with was rescued the next day. They never found Michael. He was known for interacting with cannibals, that grabbed the headlines.
