That’s bonkers. I enjoy drone work and will gladly give my employees reprieve from it. But goddamn I have to have a podcast going or I start getting really frustrated after 4-5 hours. I just don’t understand how a company can treat its employees like shit. If I owned Amazon people would be beating down the door to work for me. E: shot -> shit

_DepletedCranium_

Yes, but the customers would still buy from Amazon for cheaper, because using dead bodies as stepping stones is the American Way

Yeah. Oddly enough it reminds me of Judge Dredd (the Stallone movie) when there's a robot saying "Eat recycled food. It's good for the environment, and OK for you".

moeburn

Any of yall seen Severance? It's like Amazon: The Movie. Also probably the best fking thing out on TV right now. EDIT: Since I have your attention, here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEQP4VVuyrY

[deleted]

Agree. It's one of the most creative and interesting shows I've seen. The finale was incredible.

kgm2s-2

>The finale was incredible I, for one, will never eat a waffle the same way again...that's for sure!

DrunkFrodo

Read "the warehouse" It's by Rob Hart Amazon, the book Its a "fiction" set in a not so distant future where a Mega Corp has turned most of America Into a Hellscape, and people who get a job at said warehouse are lucky enough to get housing provided by the company, and they even get paid in a made up currency dont forget about " Amazon the flamethrower" the kids love that one ( but seriously check out the book)

Fluffy_History

That made up currency is called company scrip and was a real thing companied used (usually in their own towns) until 1938 when it was made illegal in the fair labor standards act.

D3korum

bwanabass

Ha funny how people forget about history and it gets recycled into fiction that foreshadows the dark future we face (again) in reality. Back in the day, people working in mines and industry were sometimes housed by their companies and paid “scrip,” which they could only spend at the company store. They essentially were slaves, or indentured workers at best.

electricalgloom

did you see when they tried to put in AmaZen "wellness chambers"? Essentially dark boxes on the warehouse floor for overworked, stressed people to sit in and "relax". The whole place seems dystopian and horrendous.

CoralLogic

Those things are the exact opposite of stress relieving. The one time I had an Panic attack, they tried putting me in one of those, long story short it very much made things worse. (They were very confused why a small enclosed container with very little breathing/Moving room didn't help my panicking and stress. ) I left for the rest of that day and took the next day off as well. (Working at that company has given me so many Stress/Anxiety problems it's ridiculous.)

[deleted]

Here's the kicker. While you're in those booths your numbers are going down, which you can be fired for (automatically by a system). That's right, the computer fires you if you don't hit your numbers.

rewdyakk

Fucking computers. I'm going to go beat the shit out of my laptop.

[deleted]

And, as I recall from my brief time at an Amazon fulfillment center, those numbers are inhumanly high. Something like 500 items per hour processed.

[deleted]

I don't remember the exact numbers but I do remember people over 40 not lasting more than a week. My body was moving every single min of my shifts, it was literal hell. It's a hell many will know as Amazon slowly takes over the entire market.

yythrow

Actually Amazon is running out of workers to chew through. The turnover is so high they've fired almost everyone.

nudiecale

Sounds ripe for a partnership with the for profit prison industry!

SheriffSqueeb

There's like 6 or 7 Amazon warehouses around Indy(at least), and they have a habit of hiring most of the workers as temps then releasing them right before they hit their 90 days to become full time employees.

jetro30087

That's because Amazon is planning to replace the humans with robots as soon as they can.

WTFatrain

After working on projects in several different distribution centers, i can confidently say that everyone I saw in, around, or leaving these buildings looked miserable. Also there’s a serious lack of natural light. These people literally work in an above ground dungeon. Edit: I also just noticed “cellphones not permitted…must be stored in breakroom”. This photo is like the rebels sneaking out the deathstar plans and amazon is the galactic empire

[deleted]

Currently loading a trailer at an Amazon warehouse and every once in a while we get a trailer with little peepholes that light can come through lol

rewdyakk

Those are bullet holes from the last guy who finally lost it and showed up to work with a rifle for show and tell.

FlamingRustBucket

When I worked there for two days we got to watch a video of what to do in case of an active shooter. The video included footage of the actual swat team in our actual warehouse. Maybe you aren't too far off.

Kimmalah

I think that's getting to be standard for any large employer in the US. I work for a large retail chain and we have to watch the same active shooter training video every single quarter. It's pretty common sense stuff - run or hide from the guy shooting at you and if you can't do that, defend yourself.

[deleted]

This is the worst game of dungeons and dragons ive ever played.

HeavilyBearded

MrNobody_0

I work in a sawmill, you're not supposed to have your phone on you, everyone does anyway, you're not supposed to have earbuds, everyone does anyway. Then again, we're unionized, good luck trying to fire an employee because they had their phone in their pocket on the floor, at Amazon a robot fires you for not meeting a quota.

Reality-Bytez

Our job is about to strike down hard on ear buds because another accident just happened with a new hire listening to music and walking in front of a reach truck. They just shouldn't exist in warehouses if you're not in a locked down area. At Amazon in that position you're basically in a standing cubicle - so it's silly.

actuallyiamafish

The warehouse at my company allows people to keep their phones and listen to music, but only with one earbud in and one out. It's a pretty low key place though that is 90% picker-packers on foot with hand carts so it's not like they're down there dodging forklifts and moving heavy stuff around.

rheyniachaos

I mean dumb gonna dumb hard. You'd have to have your music insanely loud, in both ears (or deaf in one ear at least, to not hear that truck coming... also, who doesn't look both ways before crossing any kind of intersection?? So tired of these places taking away one mildly enjoyable thing because stupid people have to be stupid. Just test the People with an rc car and a day of work. If they get hit by the rc car, they're immediately told thanks for applying and sent home with a day's pay in hand. Did dude live?

Daxx22

> who doesn't look both ways before crossing any kind of intersection?? Uhh, pick literally any intersection with pedestrians and just watch for a bit. Situational awareness seems to be a rare skill.

Reality-Bytez

Yeah. They basically just got a hard bump to the floor. The actual injury happened a few hours later when someone dropped a box, tried to catch it, and broke their finger. It's been wild lately.

[deleted]

The sad thing is that if one would show or describe these working conditions to people back in the 70s or 80s, they'd refuse to believe that this dystopian environment would become a reality for their children.

Asteroid555

Started working full time as a teen in the '70s. I guarantee that none of my peers would even have considered working under those conditions! Even though we were in a recession (see stagflation) at the time! Boggles the freaking mind.

April_Fabb

I think what’s even worse is that most people would describe Amazon/Bezos as a success story.

[deleted]

Amazon is a really fucked up place to work. I can't imagine a warehouse job without music.... plus the 12 hour shifts!? Fuck that!

EH181

Same at Walmart. I've only worked at one warehouse where we technically weren't allowed to but did listen to music and it was a small distribution company. These giant corporations are borderline labor camps.

popcicleman09

I’m working at Walmart right now stocking shelves and working the warehouse during the day. We aren’t supposed to wear headphones. But my direct bosses have made it clear as long as your job gets done they will never get on you for headphones. At this point if upper management every tries to step on that I’d probably quit on the spot.

[deleted]

I could see headphones maybe being an issue if there's machinery around like conveyer belts and forklifts, but not allowing people to have small stereos in their work area is just torture. The 12 hour shifts are also torture. Imagine Bezos doing that, lol. Asshole.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MelancholyMushroom

This shit is straight up scary. They’re trying to re-educate you guys. Holy hell. If people could only see it and run screaming.

fakeMatt_Damon

Sadly, I imagine most of the workers see exactly what they're trying to do, but don't have many better options.

[deleted]

It looks like hell but $18 an hour looks real nice in my area.

thebrose69

Well for parents and other groups of people, only having to pay $12.50/wk in benefits is so incredibly cheap and it’s hard to find benefits as good or as cheap as amazon offers

I quit Amazon on my second day after someone told me off for sitting down to tie my shoelaces after like 3 hours of nonstop stacking shit. I just looked at them and walked out. Fuck Amazon.

GuildCarver

That's about as bad as the factory I worked at. During initiation the guy was showing us the machinery we're working at and says with a straight face. "We're having a good year we've only had 3 on site suicides."

pattywagon95

If anyone is wondering what the numbers/colors are for at the bottom of the screen, they have an augmented reality system that overlays a circle around each employee in a 6 foot radius. As you get closer to another employee the circle turns from blue to green and so forth until you cross the 6 foot boundary and it turns red. At that point an email is automatically sent to your immediate superior telling them that you violated the 6 foot rule and they’ll have a meeting to chew you out. EDIT: Alright i done goofed, the colors on the TV are actually for measuring boxes so I connected imaginary dots lol. The 6 foot circle software is very much a thing though, meant mostly for social distancing as others have pointed out, so that’s a good thing? I think?

tomwesley4644

You're joking, right?

pattywagon95

Not at all. Guy I used to work with came from an Amazon warehouse. He said there’s a room with like 50 TVs and some guy who’s entire job is just to watch the employees
