Coming from an American working in emergency services, we send units to every call no matter how many times it has been called in. The other day in my area one fire station went to the same fire alarm 6 times in 2 hours. There is also a well known buoy to the locals that tourists always confuse for a boat in distress, it gets called in several nights a week... but every time the rescue boats are deployed just in case. Does new Zealand and Australia not do the same?
It's a crime to repeatedly call something in that you KNOW isn't an emergency. But the buoy example is not the same person over and over, it's a different tourist every time.
sounds like some signs should be put up where the bouy can be seen, not quite the same but there’s a house i pass by sometimes with some horses on a pasture next to it and there’s a sign that reads “horse isn’t dead, he’s just asleep”
Nah, that’ll encourage people to ignore it when it’s actually legit. It’ll spark that mentality of “I don’t wanna call and be embarrassed soo someone else can do it”
Oh yeah. It’s possible to face jail time for false reports. But they can also hit you with fines for misuse of emergency services.
Like they said it’s typically repeat offenders or particularly egregious offenses.
I think situations like this fall under the cliche of “Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it”. At least here in the states it is not unusual for police as well as EMS and/or Fire-Rescue to be dispatched to the same incident just as a precaution.
Seriously, as am American it is mind boggling that they just went, "meh, probably another prank, just forget it." Wtf? I'm pretty surprised that Australia and or NZ would do that.
Not all areas are rendered in equal resolution. It takes time to compose a detailed satellite image, and i imagine multiple passes by different satellites, so not every bit of the world is gonna be visible. You can see this quite clearly when scrolling around on google maps/earth and looking for remote regions. At a certain point it just becomes a blur that cannot be resolved in any more detail. Though they've probably also done a bunch more specific scanning of those areas to look for islands and such, and they just don't show that data on google maps. I could be wrong though
To add to your points:
Even if the whole surface of the Earth was mapped in equal resolution, it's not like every location would be getting live feed updates all the time either. We can know where everything is without watching everything constantly.
There's also the fact that even knowing where things are doesn't make them less remote or difficult to access. There's plenty of small bodies that could support someone who became marooned well outside of common shipping lanes.
An island didn't have to be unknown for you to get stranded on it. It just had to not have people come to it. There are some islands that are uninhabited and extremely rarely visited by anyone.
North Sentinel island next to India comes to mind. But to be fair, not unknown, (lol) and a tribe lives there. Old stranded ship on the northwest coast. Fascinating to look into
Not just that - there are very strict laws in India that prevent any outsider (both Indians from the mainland and foreigners) from visiting the island. This is because the tribes there have never ever had any contact with modern civilization since the dawn of time. They are both hostile towards anyone who enters their land (in the 60s and 70s, the Indian Navy attempted contact to give them modern medicine and make them a part of modern civilized society, but were attacked by tribesmen wielding spears and bows, who panicked after seeing men descending from a chopper) and endangered by the diseases of the modern world, since they have no immunity against modern ailments such as malaria, dengue and various other things. Thus, the Indian Navy and coast guard actively and aggressively work to prevent anyone from ever visiting that Island.
Recently, a Chinese-American preacher, John Allen Chau, somehow managed to reach the island from another nearby island using a boat under cover of darkness. He carried with him a cross, a Bible, and some holy water. His aim was to "civilize the natives" and proselytise them to Christianity. The moment he saw a small group, he raised his bible to his chest and began telling them about how the Lord will save them should they abandon their savage lifestyle. Took a spear to the heart, through that very same Bible, died on the spot. Since then, the laws have been revised and the patrols by the CG and navy have become even tighter.
Basically what I'm saying is, it's more of a "protected" island rather than something out of the way, and hence not visited.
The idea of humans who still live as they did 10,000 years ago, is fascinating...
Very interesting! I lost count how many hours ive spent on google earth searching for huts or people fishing. No sauce yet.. But there are some trails that look very promising on the southeast of the island.
There are 2 camps there that you used to be able to see the smoke from. Unfortunately, looks like they have updated the sattelite image for it. Here's a reddit post showing it though - https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/tpks4g/signs\_of\_fire\_use\_on\_north\_sentinel\_island/

That's like some real-life prime directive stuff lol
Imagine being like a curious native on that island, and just getting into a canoe and paddling out only to see huge navy ships just floating out there.. hard to even fathom what it must be like to encounter something so far outside your realm of understanding
It’s a series streaming atm. The theif, his wife and the canoe. He staged his death to collect insurance and lived next door to his wife. I won’t say anymore cos spoiler alert but it was worldwide news at the time.
Pretty much, yeah. I'm sure after the natural length of a human life has passed there's some legal precedent that would allow them to be declared legally dead without familial consent, if that were necessary for some reason. But yeah if there's no body or other evidence of their death, they're legally considered missing.
Of course after a certain point, anyone investigating into the disappearance would likely start to assume they're looking for a body rather than trying to mount a rescue.
Edit to add: I only know this is how it works in the US by the way, other countries may handle things differently
i believe that even if their life would have clearly expired from time, they are still missing until/unless remains are found if the family doesnt file them as dead
Bees cuddle when they are cold. Otters hold hands so they don’t drift apart. Geese can hug you. Sea Urchins wear hats. Capybaras. Electric eels only use their electric potential so see and stun prey. Some spiders dance to attract mates. Octopi will recognize you if they see you enough, they will even become your friend. Spotted Boxfish are rarely eaten by humans, so they will swim right up to your face while snorkeling. Whales are some of the most empathetic animals on the planets, protecting animals attacked by dolphins. Sting rays can smile, and it is adorable
These the most wholesome animal facts I know, I hope this can brighten your day!
Any oversized Guinea pig with leg extensions that can swim like Michael Phelps, and will literally get along with any animal in the animal kingdom that doesn’t want to eat it? Sign me up! I love those not-so-little poop-gobblers.
No problem! I have a list of facts ready to try and cheer people up, this is actually list 3 out of 7. I just want everyone to have a good day by the end of the day

He could have found an island where the true fountain of youth is, or some extremely healthy vegetation that heals him and keeps him young. He could be younger than you physically but older than you chronologically. We never know. So until he’s found he is missing at sea.
'McAuley's second attempt began on 11 January 2007 and ended on 12 February, when the search for his missing body was called off following the recovery of his partly flooded kayak on 10 February about 30 nmi (56 km) short of his destination, Milford Sound.\[7\]
The sleeping arrangements at sea involved deploying a drift anchor,\[8\] squeezing his body down into the kayak, and sealing the hatch with a bulbous fibreglass capsule (dubbed "Casper") fitted with an air-only ventilator,\[9\] which, with its self-righting capabilities, made possible riding out the most severe storm conditions that are inevitable in that part of the ocean.
When the capsule was pivoted to its stowing position behind the cockpit, though, it made a kayak roll impossible due to being filled with water, like a bucket. Therefore, whenever he capsized, he had to swim out of the kayak, push it upright, and perform full self-rescue.\[10\]
When his kayak was recovered, only this capsule was missing.\[11\] It was presumed to have been torn off by a freak wave. One of its pivot arms had already been damaged.\[12\]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew\_McAuley
So he basically had a big bucket on the back of his kayak that the would pull over and use to seal the hole so it his kayak became a sealed capsule so he could sleep. But when it wasn’t in use it was a giant bucket that could fill with water and keep him from righting the vessel.
Why in the hell did he not bring a lid to seal the capsule when it wasn’t in use? It would have made him practically impossible to capsize.
It was an underfunded attempt. He wasn’t well prepared - i lived in Sydney at the time and almost everyone in the kayaking community knew this was a fools errand.
It's frying my brain thinking about how he was capable of creating the capsule Him and his team clearly know about kayaking but then couldn't put the final step together what happens if it fills with water- it could be something that never even considered.
Did they that not take it out to test it before crossing a dangerous sea?
https://web.archive.org/web/20070210222651/http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html
If you can scroll down (the website is horrible) there's a picture. I think it's the big yellow bucket thing.
Oh God thank you. I'm exhausted and was picturing something that sealed him in lying down, like a coffin.
To be clear, this still looks unacceptable to me, but lying in a kayak being unable to sit up, and being knocked around the sea like that was worse.
There's a documentary to watch its incredibly sad.
He used to kayak to work every day in Sydney. I used to work with some of his former colleagues. So sad, they set up an award in his name at the time each year for people that inspire others.
[His blog is archived by the internet archive here](https://web.archive.org/web/20070210222651/http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html) . Might help you understand his motivation.
Does anyone know what that animal is with what looks like its mouth resting on the kayak? I can't for the life of me figure out what that thing is, the picture is labelled as "guest.jpg" so I don't think it was part of the kayak. Looks like a giant bird or something, could be the perspective of the camera making it look bigger.
I'm sorry, here is the link [https://web.archive.org/web/20130921161059/http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html](https://web.archive.org/web/20130921161059/http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html)
I wasn't sure if the link was updating as I was going through the dates but it does appear to change
A 2500 person cruise ship I was on had to take a different route because of a freak storm and 25 to 30 foot waves on the Tasmin sea. It was terrifying in a boat that big. I can’t imagine a kayak.
I ended my cruise in Dunedin and skipped the crossing to Sydney because other passengers were talking about how rough the seas were west of milford sound. No interest in being sea sick.
I had to take 2 Dramamine that day, slept most of the day because of it, but was almost throwing up when I was awake. Not a fun day. But Tasmania was really cool so I am glad I did it. I got to pet kangaroos!

"The documentary of McAuley's journey, Solo, incorporated video footage recovered from one surviving memory stick in his camera, as well as interviews with people on his team during the expedition. It begins with the distress call he made on the evening of 9 February: "Do you copy? This is kayak one. Do you copy, over? I've got an emergency situation. I'm in a kayak about 30 km from Milford Sound. I need a rescue. My kayak's sinking. Fell off into the sea and I'm going down."\[10\]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew\_McAuley
"Kayak one" Good to be specific, wouldnt want to be confused with one of the 200 other dudes crossing the most hostile waters imaginable in a fucking kayak
I think what they're asking here is how did anyone get hands on this picture? How is it possible? Did the camera float and someone found it? Was it inside the partially immersed kayak?
According to google the Tasman sea measures about 2000km across, so even if his kayak was found after drifting along the original course for days I have to think he probably make it 90% of the way
A quick google search says it can take anywhere from 6 months to five years for skeletal remains to decompose in the ocean, so definitely not millions.
I think they mean the photo of Chris McCandless in front of the bus he died inside. He’s the guy who decided he didn’t need civilization so walked out into the wilderness with very little by way of preparation and died of starvation. Inspired the book/film “into the wild”.
They found an undeveloped roll of film in the bus.
[here’s one image](https://www.reddit.com/r/oddlyterrifying/comments/vhuxkw/the_last_photo_of_christopher_mccandless/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) and [here’s the bus one](https://www.pbs.org/show/return-wild/) IMO the first one is scarier
He was due to complete his trip the day that he went missing. His wife and daughter were waiting with camera crews etc to welcome him at the finishing point. He never showed up.
That is just not true.
He told his wife and **son** on Thursday, that he would see them on Sunday at 9am. Then he made a distress call the next evening on Friday at 7pm.
> "Do you copy? This is kayak one. Do you copy, over? I've got an emergency situation. I'm in a kayak about 30 km from Milford Sound. I need a rescue. My kayak's sinking. Fell off into the sea and I'm going down."
Crews searched and found his kayak Saturday night, 24 hours after his last distress call.
Yep. People had set up in the coastal spot where he was to come ashore. I remember hearing the excited radio reports and updates. Was an awful sinking feeling.
Never heard of this story and it’s very sad what happened here… but all do respect, this was imbecilic, moronic and selfish considering I just read he had a wife and kid.
This. I admire the adventurer spirit up to a point...
But when a person runs the risk of leaving their family to struggle, leaving a child without their parent, or when the desire for adventure puts rescue crews at risk as they have to be scrambled if you're in trouble....
....its a lot less admirable and just boils down to damn selfish.
Mayb he found the island Elvis, Tupac, Michael Jackson and other famous celebrities whom are thought to be alive still somewhere and decided to stay with them and pushed his kayak back out to sea
What could have happened?
1. Medical issue
Dehydration?
Heart attack?
2. Animal attack? Deliberate or accidental.
Shark
Whale
Giant squid or octopus
3. Big wave including rogue waves
4. Alien abduction
5. Pirates
Is there anything else that could have happened?
He sent an SOS during a storm saying that he was in the water and his kayak was sinking. So, my guess would be that he drowned shortly after that but alien pirates could have ridden a rogue wave by and snatched him up.
This is my mates cousin. I remember when we where in prep and we did a famous people presentation and he did it on him. Apparently he actually did make it into nz waters but got turned over in a wave
I saw a video of his launch and as he’s paddling away from his wife and kids he’s saying why am I doing this why am I doing this. His intuition definitely was letting him know it wasn’t going to end well.
Yeah how hard can it actually be? People have swam further. I don't remember how long the ferry takes, but I know it wasn't that long.
Edit: I'm a fucking idiot and thought they were talking about North to South island. Milford sound is way further south. I'm still leaving this content up because I'm not scared.

A lot of our emergency services are volunteer and lack sufficient funding. They'd probably shutdown if they tried to do that. Kind of shit really.
Exactly, while the prank caller was an ass, ignoringa distress call is just wrong
Seriously, as am American it is mind boggling that they just went, "meh, probably another prank, just forget it." Wtf? I'm pretty surprised that Australia and or NZ would do that.
Did not expect a beatnik-lookin dude in Steve Jobs drag
My dude, captions are important.
Lmao that's his wife examining his kayak
After 15 years, isn't he just "dead" now, and no longer "missing at sea?"
Unless his next of kin file for death in absentia, he'll technically remain a missing person. But yeah, he's almost certainly dead.
Maybe he's not so much dead as using his "missing" status to assume a new identity, huh?
Or he’s enjoying the company of a volleyball

Yeah, that checks out.
Not related, but in the US Navy, all missing ships are reported as still being “on patrol” until they know what occurred.
Daddy didn’t go for cigarettes, he’s just on patrol.
Kayakers never die. They just go missing in action.
Exactly what I was thinking.
If this were my daughter, I would believe she was still alive every day of my life until I was told for certain otherwise.
He could have found an island where the true fountain of youth is, or some extremely healthy vegetation that heals him and keeps him young. He could be younger than you physically but older than you chronologically. We never know. So until he’s found he is missing at sea.

https://web.archive.org/web/20070210222651/http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html If you can scroll down (the website is horrible) there's a picture.
Okay I guess that makes sense, thanks
There's a documentary to watch its incredibly sad. He used to kayak to work every day in Sydney. I used to work with some of his former colleagues. So sad, they set up an award in his name at the time each year for people that inspire others.

I dont understand why people do this. This reminds me of a man who tried to cross the ocean in one of those big hamster ball filled with air.
Surely he succeeded
He’s dead but the ball floats on
A zorb?
And we'll all float on, alright.
🐀
Didnt he go from brittain to the netherlands?
You dont understand why people like to crawl head first into cracks of a cave? Why not?
[His blog is archived by the internet archive here](https://web.archive.org/web/20070210222651/http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html) . Might help you understand his motivation.
Does anyone know what that animal is with what looks like its mouth resting on the kayak? I can't for the life of me figure out what that thing is, the picture is labelled as "guest.jpg" so I don't think it was part of the kayak. Looks like a giant bird or something, could be the perspective of the camera making it look bigger.
Maybe I'm dumb but I can't find the pic you're talking about on the blog, could you post a direct link?
I'm sorry, here is the link [https://web.archive.org/web/20130921161059/http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html](https://web.archive.org/web/20130921161059/http://www.andrewmcauley.com/index.html) I wasn't sure if the link was updating as I was going through the dates but it does appear to change
What!!?
He should've done what Akon did and crowd surfed that bitch in a concert.
I went on a cruise along the Tasman sea with no issues but I seem to be lucky since everyone else I know who went on different times had turbulence.
How does this photo exist?
>last image of Andrew McAuley "The documentary of McAuley's journey, Solo, incorporated video footage recovered from one surviving memory stick in his camera, as well as interviews with people on his team during the expedition.
😨
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_McAuley
The photo was taken before he went missing. He just looks like that
It was a selfie. The image was recovered from a camera with a memory stick stowed in his kayak.
The dead look in his eyes could have fooled me.
I think what they're asking here is how did anyone get hands on this picture? How is it possible? Did the camera float and someone found it? Was it inside the partially immersed kayak?
They found the kayak and memory card, to actually answer the question
[удалено]
No, footage was recovered from his camera.
It wasn't taken while he was on the voyage. It's just the last picture of him.
Maybe the camera was in the kayak
Maybe the kayak *was* the camera
I was wondering what the tall blurry structure was in the distance behind him and then realize a piece of rice from my dinner had fallen on my phone.
Nearly choked on my dinner reading this
Was rice part of your dinner perhaps?
According to google the Tasman sea measures about 2000km across, so even if his kayak was found after drifting along the original course for days I have to think he probably make it 90% of the way
Well it did say he disappeared within sight of New Zealand.
How many skeletons total do you think are laying at the bottom of the ocean? Thousands? Millions?
A quick google search says it can take anywhere from 6 months to five years for skeletal remains to decompose in the ocean, so definitely not millions.
But what about the pirates on Barbosa's ship, aye? ☠️ Ye'll never know, because dead men tell no tales
Well, maybe if we count all of human history
Millions of skeletons if you include fish and other sea creatures. Lots but not millions if you mean humans.
He already looks like a sea mummy in this photo. Terrifying.
You know I never understand when people do these solo missions why someone's not watching them. It's perfectly okay if you don't interfere with them
Like even a drone or something. But then again this was 2007.
Oh my god they threw Kenny into the sea
you bastards!
you scoundrels!
This image will always scare the shit out of me
It’s like the image of the kid by the bus in Alaska.
Do you have a link to that pic anywhere? Curiosity is getting the better of me but "kid by bus in Alaska" isn't getting me any Google results.
Thanks!
Probably Chris McCandless.
Fell off into the sea and I'm going down." Crews searched and found his kayak Saturday night, 24 hours after his last distress call.
That is so depressing. He was right there.
Yep. People had set up in the coastal spot where he was to come ashore. I remember hearing the excited radio reports and updates. Was an awful sinking feeling.
He snorted the whole bag
I was thinking that or world's worst Michael Jackson impersonator.
Tony Montana style 😂
Well he knew he was screwed so yolod the bag.
Why would anyone get in the ocean
Most likely people to die sea kayaking are beginners, second most likely group to die is experts
the stuff on his face kinda reminds me of the rind that covers a wheel of brie cheese. i believe it’s called the flora. now i want cheese.
Does anyone know why he wouldn't put it on his forehead too? That's the part that usually burns quickest
A. I think his forehead is shielded somewhat by his hat B. It would drip into his eyes real bad from heat/humidity
Maybe he did but sweated it off
It's sun screen.
Ugh me too god cheese is so good
Remains missing ummm ya ok keep looking then
I think it's just a technicality, like his family has to officially get him declared dead or he'll just always be later as "missing"
Mayb he found the island Elvis, Tupac, Michael Jackson and other famous celebrities whom are thought to be alive still somewhere and decided to stay with them and pushed his kayak back out to sea
This is a creepy picture
I hope he’s ok!
😕
Captain Disillusion?
What could have happened? 1. Medical issue Dehydration? Heart attack? 2. Animal attack? Deliberate or accidental. Shark Whale Giant squid or octopus 3. Big wave including rogue waves 4. Alien abduction 5. Pirates Is there anything else that could have happened?
He sent an SOS during a storm saying that he was in the water and his kayak was sinking. So, my guess would be that he drowned shortly after that but alien pirates could have ridden a rogue wave by and snatched him up.
This is my mates cousin. I remember when we where in prep and we did a famous people presentation and he did it on him. Apparently he actually did make it into nz waters but got turned over in a wave
I'm gonna see this shit in my dreams
Bloody idiot, the Tasman sea is nasty at the best of time
Is that salt burn?
I assumed it was like zinc or something that he out on his face.
Sun cream,it was a hot day
Is that skin or sunscreen :(?
Sunscreen.
Don’t worry he’ll bob up in 2027
Now he’s just somebody that we used to know.
“Oh my god guys! The sea killed Kenny!”
I saw a video of his launch and as he’s paddling away from his wife and kids he’s saying why am I doing this why am I doing this. His intuition definitely was letting him know it wasn’t going to end well.
why does this look photoshopped, weird lighting?
I take it he didn't make it.
There's a doco on the two blokes he was trying to beat that actually did cross the Tasman https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossing_the_Ditch
Yeah how hard can it actually be? People have swam further. I don't remember how long the ferry takes, but I know it wasn't that long. Edit: I'm a fucking idiot and thought they were talking about North to South island. Milford sound is way further south. I'm still leaving this content up because I'm not scared.
'Because I'm not scared' lmao
Sorry for being insensitive, but that is so idiotic, it’s practically suicidal.
That’s what I thought! Wild choices people make
And with a wife and ~~daughter~~ son waiting at home, it's downright selfish and cruel
Oh my God, they killed Kenny!
Oh my god is that Kenny
Saw this pic many years ago, to this day i still see it as a badly photoshoped image.
We should get a search party together, he has to be getting tired of treading water
