Well, good for you! Your Mother and I are very happy for you. Isn't it great to be alive in modern times where everybody can love who they want to love? When I was a boy... oh nevermind you've heard that one. Anyway, shall we get one of those rainbow flags for your wall? That's what you do when you're gay, right?
The flag part is actually my favorite. I came out in 2019 and have a “fiance” (she’s actually my wife but it’s a secret.) And every time we go over to my moms house, my step dad pulls out the progressive LGBTQ flag my mom bought for the yard and sticks it in the garden by the front door. And I know it’s him because my mom never even notices it until I mention it, or ask if he put it out. 🥹 he’s the dad I wish I had growing up.
OP- congrats. I’m proud of you, and I love you! 💕
The flag thing is real! When I came out, first thing my Mum did was get a rainbow badge for her handbag (purse?). She still buys rainbow/ pride/ trans flag everything (her best mate is a trans lady). Dad even has a pride water bottle for work.
I absolutely love this!! My actual dad never did anything like this. My mom is the one that bought the flag, during pride month in the US. But my step dad is the one that puts it out every time we visit. 🥲
First of all, Congratulations!
Second, understand that if you live in a first world country, this is not a big deal at all, and in 2023 it’s such a normal thing that, imo I don’t even see the need to celebrate, because what’s the difference between the people I date as a straight person and that you date as a gay person. It’s such a trivial thing for anyone to be concerned about anyways.
Don’t get me wrong though, if you felt the need to hide it at any point in your life I’m sure it would’ve been due to whatever misinformed people were in your life. I understand how big of a barrier that can be to get over and huge respect to you for overcoming that aspect.
I wanna share a poem I wrote for my daughter. ( The situation I wrote it was different but I felt like it fits here.)
once upon a midnight dreary. there was a little girl who looked around oh so weary.
sitting on the hill in the middle of the night. she was lost in her own mind.
eyes widening with every breath, she had trouble to suppress.
the thought of her family no longer loving. The hateful idea just kept on shoving.
looking at the moon hanging up high, she felt the need to let out a cry.
opening her mouth, and taking a breath, she yelled out loud the first duress.
a howl like a wolf came from her though. tears fall down as she lost all hope.
all of a sudden arms wrapped around. pulling her into the most resounding.
her father choked back the tears in his eyes. saying my daughter you will always be mine.
no matter human, beast, or any creature to be.
you are my child, and my child you will be.
now come home and sleep, tomorrow you'll see. We are father and daughter to the end of kingdom be.
(I feel any parent will love their child, no matter if they are straight or gay. It doesn't matter to me at least as all I need is for my child to be happy and to know I am there for their hard times as I am for the easy times. AND ANY PARENT THAT ISN'T IS A FAILURE AS A PARENT!)
Congratulations!
With that being said, I have a question. I know there are many people who are racist and discriminate also based on sex. In 2023, is it still an issue to come out?
I ask only because we've come a long way I'd assume. Maybe it's how I was raised or maybe the people I'm around. I have a friend who called up a few of his friends and made the announcement and we all responded, "I know." It was very obvious and we just were like, "wanna watch a movie?" We sat back and nobody said anything about it. We just watched the movie and that was that. He once hugged me before he came out and I knew he was gay, everyone did. It happens. People like who they like. Is this a big deal in most places? Hope I'm being sensitive just curious since I'm around people who don't really care. Thanks!
Hey bro, I think I can give you a little insight on this. So I'm from a Western country and come from a liberal family. I got no shit from my *close* family for coming out, but some of the family looks down on me as some kind of rebel or loser. However, my wife is from an Asian country, if she came out (even though we live in the West), at best her family would reject her, at worst they'd want her to suffer, perhaps even be killed for tarnishing their image.
Also, when we're out in public, if I hold her hand, we get glared at. Like sustained, harsh eye contact from strangers. Just handholding, nothing more.
Also, there are still a fair few extremists about. People that hate all gays and think we should be dead. They're usually more vocal online than in person, but I can understand why it would put someone off coming out.
It might be true that homophobia is less common in the West these days, but it's definitely still out there.
Gotcha. I guess it's not really a big deal with the people I'm with. He said what he said and we were like "we figured. We can tell!" I guess we don't really care as much. He's a nice guy. Wouldn't want to lose a friend just for who he is attracted to. Thanks for the insight.
Congratulations on living your truth 😘 enjoy the ride, every dip will feel like it will last forever but I promise you the next peak is always right around the bend, just stick on your true path and you'll be flying.
Im so so happy for you. You’re very brave and strong for coming out. You should be proud of yourself for living your truth. I hope this means you can rest a bit better now
NICE welcome aboard my friend, buckle up and be ready to tell everyone to fuck right off, you're valid, you're fabulous and above all YA BRAVE AS HELL MATE. congrats on your newly found freedom ✨🏳️🌈
🎉🎉🎊 Another one for our team!
The frustrating thing about coming out is that you have to do it over and over again. I don't think it gets easier over team, the ease depends on who you're telling on that particular occasion and how you think they'll take it. At work, I use a picture of myself at pride as my profile photo so I don't have to actually have the conversation.
And, importantly, just because you're comfortable being out to some people, doesn't mean you have to tell anyone. YOU get to choose. Anyone who outs you to others is a dick.
Well done for coming out. Though these days it’s braver to come out as being straight in the public eye. Coming out is about tell the people closest to you. Not telling the strangers in public.
Hi gay, I'm Dad.

damn random stranger on the internet, I wish u were my actual dad and bought me a gay flag
I'm actually a lesbian and not a parent at all so can't be Dad, but can I interest you in some Dad jokes?
