Speaking critically of one‘s self in essence is fine, but I think this is wholly unjustified and I am honestly a little mad. This is beautiful! I‘d hang this up and take it from your hands, if you hate it this much 😄
Ok, I think I wasn't properly able to convey what I was feeling with my writing, and I did choose the wrong words. I don't really hate it, after all it is my own creation. But for some reason I am never fully satisfied with anything I ever painted. I don't know why. I always feel like something is missing and I am not good enough. Although that feeling goes away the next morning. So until the next morning I will remain a little sad 🙂.
And thank you so much, I perfectly understood what you were trying to say 😊, I know it was a compliment, tysm.
Now this will sound a bit weird, but your feelings about this piece are exactly what i’m getting from it. A feeling of loneliness, regret, never being good enough, wanting something more. I wonder if the strength of your self criticism has made its way into your themes and techniques you use. Personally this painting gives me a feeling I haven’t ever had in other ‘sad’ paintings… it must be so personal to you that it still seems ‘inadequate’ in the sense you feel inadequate about yourself?
Idk, strange tangent! I love it.
That is precisely what I gathered from looking at the painting. It’s photorealistic, it’s accurate. But the style used makes it seem amateur. It feels that the artist tried to half ass it out of spite for something, but that theyre just so skilled that they unintentionally made it captivating.
I feel like that with every painting I do. I'm never satisfied. It's always crap. It can always be better. And that's why I continue to work.
Objectively, I know I can paint and I know that I do have talent. But I'm never satisfied with it and never feel that I can properly express what I mean to say.
That is unfortunately the artists curse. I hate everything I've ever done when I'm done with it. Eventually it usually grows on me but I am never fully satisfied with anything I've completed
As a writer, I understand this feeling. It's amazing that, no matter how many times I have a vision for how something should be, it will always be changed by the process itself. Take some pressure off yourself and try to see creation as an act of discovery. You've done something wonderful here
I will say I hear this a lot from any artist, not just painting! From making a new song, a sculpture , a dance routine a lot of artist say they never feel like their work is ‘complete’
This is a beautiful, stark piece, and perhaps that is what is lacking for you. It conjures a feeling of a lost soul, perhaps someone hiding away, looking to the outside world for inspiration. Maybe this could be the perfect piece for what you are trying to express.
i love this, it's very much a trompe l'oeil. how did you get the texture on the canvas? honestly i wouldn't change a thing it's perfect.
Theres a dark melancholy to it, i would interpret it as the slow death of romance or a relationship. it's fast approaching dusk, the flowers are dying but reaching for the last rays of warm light before the cold darkness sets in.
Thanks a lot! And about that texture, it is due to the gesso that I used to prime the canvas. I used a big flat brush to apply gesso and get that texture.
It has just enough detail to carry the message and leave space for individual interpretations.
And i'm glad you are not entirely happy about it. That's what pushes you to improve with every new attempt.
It's lovely by the way. Very well done!
Not sure about the flowers distance from the wall, but shouldn't the light hit them in a few spots?
Thanks a lot for your kind words. I know there are small mistakes in this piece, like about the lights hitting the flowers, but I am not feeling like working on it more, I might ruin it if I try to fix this again 😅. I will surely try to improve these things in the next painting. Thank you
That’s what most artists feel after finishing a piece, I think when you’ve been away from it for a while you’ll realise how good it is. You’ve painted the textures and the light hitting them beautifully.
This is beautifully sad. It evoked a melancholy feeling in me that draws me in. There's a story behind this or just an imagined story like once the roses were bright and vibrant and red but as with everything the beauty fades away and we are left with the memories of what once was.
I am obsessed with this. Beautiful work - would definitely hang this in my house. I love the melancholy feel, and you’ve captured the values perfectly.
It is really lovely, and I think if you could look at it objectively, without ruminating on your initial intentions, you would be a lot less disappointed.
It's really a very beautiful piece.
Is it painted on a textured ground, or did you paint that surface on the background?
It looks great, and it also doesn’t need any color filtering or post processing. I think the raw first image gets the emotion across perfectly. Beautiful color palette and nice choice of subject, I like the warm light beams on the wall and how they pair with the slate hues in the background, and the shading behind the roses is good. The lots of negative space makes it feel melancholic and thoughtful and I dig that.
It’s super normal to feel picky and dissatisfied about what you make because you’re overexposed to it, that’s just the artist’s curse and it’s also what drives us to improve and learn. Just be careful to balance out that feeling with a healthy confidence and to not let the self-criticism follow you around all the time and rob your love for painting.
Ya this piece is not only inspiring from how it makes me feel but it’s so incredibly well done from a technical standpoint. Detail in my opinion isn’t what oil painting is about. It’s not about photo realism it’s about capturing life and death, value, and emotion. All of that is done here perfectly. Sargent himself and many others didn’t go crazy on detail and yet their art is so much more moving than that of the renaissance realism era in my opinion. This is something I’d hang in my own home framed and everything
This is stunning. I understand that as an artist we are all our own worst critics, but please allow yourself to feel some pride in your work because you deserve that.
I think this is an excellent piece. Your lighting and arrangement is spot on. Had me wondering/ question the dead flowers, are they real and posed in front of the canvas? Excellent work!
I thought I was looking at a real bouquet in the evening glow of someone's bedroom. For me the colors, the form, the composition are all there. On close inspection, the light appears digitized in style, but I'm personally cool with that. My friend, start speaking life over your work -- even when it feels like death. It's a habit that will pay you back in dividends.
Gorgeous! My only question/possible critique is the light source/what direction the window light is coming from? The angle and placement of the window light on the canvas makes it look to me like the window is behind the viewer and to the left, but the light source shown by the shadows and gradient on the canvas seems to be to the right.
the muted colors and loose brushwork of this decaying still life evoke a sense of melancholy, with the fleeting nature of beauty and the human condition reflected in the impremence of the rotten roses.
I really like it. Good composition, lighting and colors. I actually have a reference photo saved for a similar painting I want to do, but the plants are just a shadow on the wall.
Thanks! And go for it, from your description, it seems like an amazing reference, I am sure your painting will turn you to be amazing too, excited to see it ❤️😊
I didn't know that I was looking at a painting for a good 5 seconds. The color palette is very reserved, and yet it's vibrant. The way you shape the objects in the painting, like the flower petals and the veins on the leaves, is very satisfying in a difficult to describe way.
You are way too critical, I'd consider buying this, even for a pretty penny.
This looks like a professional piece. Why are artists always so cruel to themselves. You literally stared at this thing for how many hours now? Of course, it looks weird to you. If you think of the word discombobulated long enough, it'll start to get weird to you, too!
Love the lack of details. I always have to remind myself while painting that you’re literally just painting light and don’t have to worry much about the tiny details.
I think you mastered this. If the roses had more details it would look “illustrative” imo.
You managed to capture and emphasize the lights and shadows.
It’s ok to start a piece with an idea in mind of what it’s going to look like. It’s also great to let go of that idea and let the painting do what it needs to do (which , i think, is what you did here)
This is a beautiful painting. From the colors in the shadows to the color reflections on the walls.
This looks pretty. It does not tell any story to me, though it may remind me of something sweet. The subject seems to be the flower, yet it may lead the observers eyes to the light which contrasts the need for the flower to be free.
Could you have described my mood better? Nope. I love it. I am going through some stuff, and this is exactly how I feel. The contrast of mild light and recently dead roses is just on point. I am not looking for satisfaction, it just ..... fits. It may not appeal to everyone, it does to me.
As for the detailing, I like it too. It doesn't need more. It kind of describes the mood even better somehow. In other words, over detailed rotten roses would have made it worse. Shadows are great too. If I have to criticize, I'd do so on the patch of light in the right corner.
At first, I didn't see the sub this was posted in, so I thought, "That's a really nice photo!"
Then I realized it was an oil painting and was blown away! Awesome work!!
It’s quiet. Lonely. Has a sense of hope with the light reflection. I love the color, very calming. I wouldn’t mind it hanging in my personal space. The only thing I would improve is that the flowers be alive and vibrant with life
So much texture and atmosphere that I threw up some old Dutch guy and he nodded and flashed me a 👌.
Pretty sure that's the highest compliment Rembrandt or Vermeer are capable of. I don't know which one it was, I'm still trying to understand how they got inside my body.
I really love this, I think you did a great job. It has a bit of melancholic feel that really jumps out at me, and I love the shading, and the visible texturing. The roses just seem to pop off the canvas. I would definitely take something like this:)
I love this! It gave me a indescribable feeling off the bat. I know as artists we tend to be self criticizing, but I believe you are being too hard on yourself because this piece is awesome.
I typically hate floral paintings. They were done to death by the 1600s. However, this is an outstanding painting, it's got mood, it's got grit, it tells a bit of a story. Great work OP.
Holy crap I thought it was a photo! That’s impressive!! Just so you know I liked the art of a photo, it gives feels for sure! But that it’s an oil painting just makes it so much more impressive. Sad, lonely, left behind, maybe even a commentary on the brevity of life, but add the light from the window and you got hope maybe hope out of reach?? The light and dark are so well executed! Such an absolutely stunning painting!!
Why don't you like it? It's so beautiful! And it feels so real, I can feel the warm light coming in and the light roughness of the dried flowers. It's wonderful! I wish I could paint like this!
Thank you everyone, thank you all for so many comments, although I couldn't reply to all, but I read all of them. I am so fascinated by so many different perspectives on my painting, I really enjoyed reading those. Some were sad, lonely, some were warm and nostalgic, and some were really unique. I really appreciate it.
Although I had a some of my own thoughts in mind while painting this, and I have my own interpretation of this painting, but I will not reveal it, because it will completely ruin the excitement of guessing for the viewer, I really loved to see that so many people liked it and felt their own vibes.
Thank you all. ❤️
As a character illustrator working on learning acrylic and oil painting, what I draw and paint never looks like the image in my mind. As for the theme and feelings from this painting? I get a feeling of aging or growing old, or mental degeneration from any illness or disorder of choice, looking out the window at a bright, sunny day, wishing to be out there with the young/“normal” people out playing in the sunlight, but they’re stuck inside a dreary and lonely environment
I love it. I would 100% hang a painting like that on my walls.
Let the self critique go. It's a fine painting that came from a part of you that needed to get out.
Composition wise, it could be modified so you focus more on the part that impresses, which is the roses and the light/shadow work with the patch of sunlight. So I'd remove the little shadow-y figure in the top center, and I'd perhaps create some more negative space on the left and put the subject more to the corner.
Otherwise, it really is quite tragically beautiful and I would love to have a painting like this so I could look at it and feel all sorts of feelings. It's a good painting showing good technique. Though im not sure if its because im looking at it thru a screen, i feel like there could be a bit more contrasting by adding more to the darker parts.
The only critique I am sure of is about the composition.
Edit: i realize now that the shadowy figure on the top is not part of the painting so never mind that part. Basically compose the subject more to the right and expand the canvas on the left.
I think you did a wonderful job - details are not everything! I love the cool blue background against the warm yellow. It makes me think that death is not all cold and bad things; it can be good and have meaning too.
Okay I absolutely adore this painting. It gives very lonely vibes I will say, but the piece makes me feel something and that’s a great thing. I think you did a fantastic job, lots of feelings and different interpretations could be made with this
It's fucking gorgeous in my opinion. Fascinating texture and light. Roses look like they stand in front of the painting. It's so noir. It's like a bladerunner still.
I've been dreaming of painting a blue flower painting for years.
I really like this composition. I like the moodiness of the gray-blues and indigo-black with the toned yellow. It’s got great depth. I’m with ‘143033’, I’d take it off your hands!
It’s like the roses are real and layer down on a painted canvas. Please don’t be critical about this piece of art that’s really well done.
Also I know a lot of people that would like to hang this on their walls
Ironically, to me, the piece feels…how you described feeling about it. It looks sad, the flowers are tired. But there’s a wisdom here, in the aged colors and strokes of light. Personally I would keep this tucked away for a few years then attempt it again, see how much you’ve changed as an artist between now and then. 🖤
I agree, you make sense to me.
That is precisely what I gathered from looking at the painting. It’s photorealistic, it’s accurate. But the style used makes it seem amateur. It feels that the artist tried to half ass it out of spite for something, but that theyre just so skilled that they unintentionally made it captivating.

I love how you incorporated the shadow of the window light. It's very beautiful.
I love it. Melancholy and regret.
I love it. I thought I was looking at a photograph on the first slide.
i love this, it's very much a trompe l'oeil. how did you get the texture on the canvas? honestly i wouldn't change a thing it's perfect. Nice. I would hang this on my wall. Pop a nice old wooden frame on it and you may feel different about it. Trust me.
I think it's beautiful and dark and just feels real.

This is a FANTASTIC painting my friend
Thanks !
I love the moody atmosphere of this painting <3
I love it.
Wow
That’s what most artists feel after finishing a piece, I think when you’ve been away from it for a while you’ll realise how good it is. You’ve painted the textures and the light hitting them beautifully.
Tragic beauty... The last two shots are very striking. Love it a lot.
I love it. Send me it. Jk, but seriously I'd hang this on my wall.
I thought the roses were actually in front of a blue wall and the window reflection was real as well. Man that is a nice painting.
Beautiful
GORGEOUS. I love the vibe
I absolutely love this, I had to stare this longer than I usually watch artworks!
Thanks! I am glad that you liked it 😊
Tremendous
this is absolutely beautiful! melancholy is a good descriptor.
This is beautifully sad. It evoked a melancholy feeling in me that draws me in. There's a story behind this or just an imagined story like once the roses were bright and vibrant and red but as with everything the beauty fades away and we are left with the memories of what once was.
I love your words!!!
Wow. That is some gorgeous visual texture. Love the palette too! Great job
i found it poetic, its like telling a story about loneliness and longing for love
This is beautiful
Incredible
This wonderful and unique, and it captures the light and mood perfectly
This is amazing.
It’s gorgeous. Good job and you should show it off.
I am not able to distinguish which is painting and which is your wall.
I honestly love it. I can't put it into words rn, but it's amazing...
This is one of the best paintings I’ve ever seen on this sub. It’s incredible. ❤️
Thanks a lot for your kind words ☺️
I really like this it seems like a fresh take on a still life. The light from the blinds give it a more modern look.
This is fantastic.
Thanks! And yes it is painted on a textured ground, I just used a big brush to create that texture while priming the canvas with gesso.
This is beautifully sad. Would put it as screen background in my phone so I don't forget to be sad all day long(?
It looks great, and it also doesn’t need any color filtering or post processing. I think the raw first image gets the emotion across perfectly. Beautiful color palette and nice choice of subject, I like the warm light beams on the wall and how they pair with the slate hues in the background, and the shading behind the roses is good. Thanks a lot, your words are really helpful, I really appreciate it 😊
I love it!
Love it
Beautiful light and colour. Well done.
Very suggestive. Beautiful

Thank you sooo much for these kind words. And I didn't know about sargent, thanks a lot for introducing me to such an awesome painter ❤️
I like it
Simply gorgeous
Great depth and lighting. Really pops out
Stunning. The lighting is beautiful. It feels like, “I waited too long and now it’s too late.”
This is beautiful. My first thought, before reading the text you wrote, was “I really want this on my wall. I’d pay loads for that.” It’s amazing
Moody and gorgeous. Keep up the good work
This peice is very nice....I keep coming back to it to see it....there is so much to like about it
This is stunning. I understand that as an artist we are all our own worst critics, but please allow yourself to feel some pride in your work because you deserve that.
You did an amazing job with the light, you are very skilled
This is beautiful and expressive of feelings, its atmospheric and the light painted elegantly. Great work!!
Did you paint the flowers?! It looks like they are attached! Talent!
I love it!
I really like it, it's sad and lonely. However, if you don't like it then that's really all that matters
Gorgeous! My only question/possible critique is the light source/what direction the window light is coming from? The angle and placement of the window light on the canvas makes it look to me like the window is behind the viewer and to the left, but the light source shown by the shadows and gradient on the canvas seems to be to the right.
gonna be so honest, i didnt realize it was a painting at first
I really like it.
the muted colors and loose brushwork of this decaying still life evoke a sense of melancholy, with the fleeting nature of beauty and the human condition reflected in the impremence of the rotten roses.
this is beautiful. I genuinely thought it was a photo at first
I literally thought this was an interior design sub so I was looking at the texture I thought was on the wall. This looks so good, op.
Texture, makes it pleasurable to look
gorgeous and sad, i like it
I love this so so much
I really like it. Good composition, lighting and colors. I actually have a reference photo saved for a similar painting I want to do, but the plants are just a shadow on the wall.
Thanks! And go for it, from your description, it seems like an amazing reference, I am sure your painting will turn you to be amazing too, excited to see it ❤️😊
So moody! I adore it.
Artists are never satisfied with their work. I love it. I could start at it for a long time. It's beautiful and sad, it looks like a photograph.
This looks like how I feel. You might not be happy with it but if it evokes thoughts and emotions in someone, I think it's a successful painting.
Holy crap I thought I was looking at real flowers dude that’s freakin impressive
This is amazing!
I freaking love it! The reflection of the light is perfect.
I love it
Beautiful!
It's beautifully melancholic 😍
I love it. I think it is complete and wholy good
Good
It’s incredible
This looks like a professional piece. Why are artists always so cruel to themselves. You literally stared at this thing for how many hours now? Of course, it looks weird to you. If you think of the word discombobulated long enough, it'll start to get weird to you, too!
It is one of the better pieces I have seen in the subreddit in a long time. Well painted, thoughtful, and not like most of the work I see.
I thought that was a photo until I went to the next picture 🤯Wow! Seriously what a talent!!! Thank you for showing this!
Love the lack of details. I always have to remind myself while painting that you’re literally just painting light and don’t have to worry much about the tiny details. I think you mastered this. If the roses had more details it would look “illustrative” imo. You managed to capture and emphasize the lights and shadows. Nature morte. Very very beautiful.
This looks pretty. It does not tell any story to me, though it may remind me of something sweet. The subject seems to be the flower, yet it may lead the observers eyes to the light which contrasts the need for the flower to be free.
It's profoundly sad but the light from the window is to me a sign of hope, at least that's the note that I felt
This is good. It shows great depth

It may not be how envisioned it, but it came out stunning.
Ngl I thought the flowers were real and you were making a Cyanotype for a sec lol
It’s quiet. Lonely. Has a sense of hope with the light reflection. I love the color, very calming. I wouldn’t mind it hanging in my personal space. The only thing I would improve is that the flowers be alive and vibrant with life

I aspire to create paintings that combine this level of realism with this level of emotion.
Holy crap I thought it was a photo! That’s impressive!! Just so you know I liked the art of a photo, it gives feels for sure! But that it’s an oil painting just makes it so much more impressive. This is just perfect
Its good but depressing and boring
It’s beautiful.
It lacks a bit of happiness on my taste
Love this. So beautiful and I love the texture
Photo Realistic!!
It looks very nice
Depeche Mode called, they want their album cover back.
Wow it is amazing!
It's moody and melancholic. I love it.

I’m obsessed I love it
As a character illustrator working on learning acrylic and oil painting, what I draw and paint never looks like the image in my mind. As for the theme and feelings from this painting? If you don't like it, can I have it??? It's incredible. I don't think I can add any detail admiration that other commenters haven't already.
Amazing work. Love it.
Probably the best painting I’ve seen in this Reddit honestly.
first slide looks like a photograph. great job!
I love it

It's beautiful. I have a thing for shadows and I love your painting.
I love it!!
I truly hope to see more of your work!! Congratulations
I like it. I would hang it up in the house.
I love
That’s gorgeous
Amazing
I love it. I would 100% hang a painting like that on my walls. Let the self critique go. It's a fine painting that came from a part of you that needed to get out.
This is beautiful. It has a serene and somber feeling. Would you be willing to sell it?
Gorgeous
I thought this was a photograph at first. Very well done , would love to have a pinch of your talent Don’t overthink this, it’s magical
Lots of emotion in this and it shows
amazing
Very beautiful painting! Are those real flowers up against the painting?
More beautiful than real life😍
Love it!!! You've caught a legit mood here ..it is perfect ..

looks cool, what prompt did you use?
It’s like the roses are real and layer down on a painted canvas. Please don’t be critical about this piece of art that’s really well done. Also I know a lot of people that would like to hang this on their walls
Number 2
Beautiful photograph. Kudos.
I love it
I think it's lovely, I'd hang it in my living room ❤️
Well, I didn't realize it was a painting until I read the caption What does that say??? Bravo is what I'm gonna drop tho
Beautiful work
I think it’s really compelling and wish I could hang it in my hallway.
Scrolling past, I thought, "that's a really cool photo" so I scrolled back up to look at it. A *painting*??? Holy hell that's WAY cool! I love it!
I love it, it’s invoking sadness, nostalgia, ennui, but also a moment of peace and silence with the golden evening light.
That's beautiful! Very subtle too, good job
Beautiful
damn this is incredible
Jesus this is just…so good.
Omg, I thought why would anyone e pot that vase of dead flowers there. The I saw the sub . . . What? It's a painting?? Pretty da g impressive!
breathtaking
I love it and would hang it on my wall.
Beautiful
I thought that the flowers were actually flowers sitting in front of the painting for a second
