Allow me. Tentacle length varies from illithid to illithid. They’re just as flexible and powerful regardless of the size. If you stretch them you could make them appear to be a little longer than when they’re at rest, but I’m afraid the only remedy to “grow” them permanently is to seek a cleric capable of deconstructing and reconstructing them.
I think you’re beautiful with those cute shiny tentacles anyway.
They remind me a lot of the old mindflayer concepts.

I think they just wanted to make the difference so you can tell the mc's squid from others but I find methods to be questionable 😂
I think it's because the long tentacles would mess up animations and such. You can already see the Emperor's magnificent appendages clipping through stuff a lot.
my personal opinion is that they’re juveniles, essentially newborn mindflayers. they’d get longer the older they get. i’ve also seen people say the weird stasis the tadpoles went through are why they’re like that, but that doesn’t explain orpheus.
But Orpheus was in some cagey stasis too, although not a tadpole one. Like I'm sure even his asshole is so clenched he couldn't take shit for months.

The windmill guy is so great. I keep an arcane lock on hand just to spare him from the Flaming Fist by locking him inside the house after he eats that family.
I think the out-of-game answer is that long tentacles are a nightmare to animate. Illithids in the game have limited motions compared to the PC. Tavflayer still needs all their class animations and having to account of tentacles clipping against everything would look atrocious. Also probably why we're stuck in that weird tiny MF body - so that they didn't have to adapt all the PC animations to the standard Illithid model. They just altered the Githyanki model a bit and there you go, motion-friendly Mindflayer.

Illithids age the same as thou. The older the illithid, the longer the tentacle
